Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png "Teleports your champion a short distance toward your cursor's location."
Flash is a must for Sion, as it helps you position yourself in order to catch people off position, all-in engages and also serve as an escape tool! Always take this.

12.png "Teleports your champion to target turret, minion or ward. You may reactivate Teleport to cancel it, placing it on a 200 second cooldown."

Teleport is mandatory if you want to carry your team as Sion, as your main goal mid-game will be ganking other lanes/focusing on objectives, then going back to your lane to protect your turret. Just take care to not start channeling it if your opponent has a way to cancel it.

3.png"Reduces an enemy's movement and attack speed by 30%, armor and magic resistance by 10, and their damage dealt by 40% for 2.5 seconds."

You should take this only if you're going Support Sion.

14.png When going Full AD Sion, it will increase your kill potential during laning phase.

Skill Order

LnDHAUb.png

You're going to max your E first almost always, as it will make pushing your lane VERY easy, while also being your main source of harass, along with Arcane%20Comet.png?width=32. Second, max your shield (W) for overall tankiness and damage. Last but not least, max your Q. "Why should I max Q last?" That's because farming with it will be hard, the damage output is not so nice and your opponent can easily dodge it before the knock-up, while your E minion projectile is very fast and easy to aim.

sionpassive.png Passive: Glory on Death

Your passive can be used in a variety of ways. After dying, with the huge ASPD boost, 100% lifesteal and damage granted, you can easily finish off your enemies. Your main job as Sion will be to disrupt/zone the enemy team with your skills, and even after dying you will be doing this job, as you gain 10% of the target maximum health as damage. People may underestimate your damage, and you will surprise them often.

sionq.png Q: Decimating Smash

Your main sorce of CC, along with your ultimate. When fully charged, it will knock up stun all enemies hit for 2.25 seconds. You will hardly be able to charge to its full, so just try this when you have the help of your E (slow) or other form of CC from your team. Remember that after 1 second you'll still knock up the enemies despite the stun duration will be lower (1.25s), so always reactivate it before your enemy flee from it. Also, it will proc Arcane%20Comet.png?width=32

sionw.png W: Soul Furnace

You can use this skills during any of your abilities, which means you can cast it while charging your Q or during your ultimate. Use it wisely, as you won't be able to reactivate it and do the damage if its broken. That being said, just activate it AFTER you opponent uses all of his combo and begins to move back (e.g. Jax all-ins you with his stun, hit you and go back). You can use this too when freezing the lane, to mitigate most of the minions attacks.

sione.png E: Roar of the Slayer

Your main farming AND harass tool. Use it on a minion to throw it in your enemies' faces, then follow up with a Q. You can use it to snipe people with low hp (especially strong with Arcane%20Comet.png?width=32), catch enemies off position from far away and follow up with your ultimate. If you're full AD try to aim it directly on your enemy, and not a minion, because the damage reduction it gives (20%) will only apply to the first enemy hit.

sionr.png R: Unstoppable Onslaught

One of the most hard to learn skills in the game. You can use it as an escape tool (since it grants you immunity to all forms of CC), as an initiation and to set up ganks. Although, you must be aware to not hit structures or walls, otherwise you will get stunned. Always deactivate it before if you know you won't hit any enemies. Try to start its channeling from far away, as the damage and stun will be longer based on the distance you travel.

Unfortunately, when you start channeling it, your camera will be locked on yourself (centered), and there is nothing you can do about it. To counter it, you should give a last look in your enemy before starting the cast, and then follow your minimap orientation to hit your target.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    RUSH THIS AGAINST HARD MATCH-UPS
STANDART START, GIVES YOU ENOUGH MANA REGEN TO KEEP BULLYING YOUR OPPONENTS AND FARMING FROM A SAFE DISTANCE

Core Items

    1. AGAINST AD (BAMI FIRST)
    1. AGAINST AP (SPECTRE'S FIRST)
    2. RUSH ONE (AP/AD). SPIRIT VISAGE IS ALSO NICE IF YOU HAVE HEALER(S) ON YOUR TEAM.
    3. RUSH ONE OF THESE IF YOU'RE AGAINST HEAVY AD COMPOSITIONS. FROZEN HEART TO COUNTER HEAVY ASPD, GAUNTLET FOR THE NICE SLOW WHEN CHASING ENEMIES + WAVECLEAR.
SWIFTNESS IF HEAVY SLOW, NINJA TABI AGAINST HEAVY AA CHAMPIONS AND MERC TREADS IF STRUGGLING AGAINST HEAVY CC COMPS
    BALANCED END GAME BUILD

Situational Items

    5. STERAK IF AGAINST HEAVY BURST, THORNMAIL AND RANDUIN TO COUNTER AA, TITANIC HYDRA AS A LAST ITEM FOR EXTRA DAMAGE OUTPUT. WARMOG FOR EXTRA TANKINESS, DEADMAN'S FOR THE NICE SLOW AND MS.
SUPPORT SION. ORDER: SIGHTSTONE > FACE OF THE MOUNTAIN > BOOTS OF SWIFTNESS > SOLARI/FROZEN HEART (AP/AD) > ZZ'ROT

Usually I build in this order (may be different against certain matchups, so check notes):

2033.png -> 1056.png + 1001.png -> 3068.png OR 3065.png -> 3111.png -> Situational

Starting Items

• 2033.png Corruption Potion is just the best start to Sion. Helps with your mana issues, so you will stay longer in lane, and also gives you the nice extra damage (15 magic damage) when you hit your champions with any of your skills or attacks. Remember to pop it just before starting to harass/trade.

• 3302.png2003.png When going Support Sion. Although looking quite awful because you can't farm in order to stack health with your W, Sion Support is actually a very nice pick (currently 2nd position in win rate Supports, just after Leona).

First back

• 3751.png More health for overall tankiness and the nice passive damage for easier splitpush. Build this against AD match-ups.

• 2055.png ALWAYS BUY A CONTROL WARD, whenever you can. For just 75g it will help you stay safer in your lane, as Sion is a very slow/immobile champion and because of that an easy target for ganks. Your only escape besides 4.png will be past-6 with your ultimate, if used right. From mid to late game, you will be helping your team with vision along with the 3361.png.

Core Items

• 3068.png This will make pushing/farming a lot easier. You should build this first against AD matchups like Riven, Pantheon and Yasuo.

• 3065.png Bonus health, CDR, high MR and the nice bonus on healings/regens. Core against AP champions.

Later in the game, you can abuse the damage of the voidlings, as they explode in contact with structures (yes, even inhibitors AND the Nexus!). Place it right on the top of these structures when pushing with your team, or when you are splitpushing/backdooring and there are no enemies nearby.

The reason why this is so OP on Sion is because every 4th voidling will have extra damage based on 15% of your max Health.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not build Zz'rot as a first item, because the voidlings DO NOT STACK HEALTH WITH YOUR W!

Check out this video where I won the game just because the enemies forget the Zz'rot portal inside their base and went to Baron: http://plays.tv/video/57781d74bee181c3c3

Later Items

• 3110.png If there are 2 or more champions with AS based attacks (157.png11.png67.png etc.) you should build this after your Core items. The Unique passive, Armor, Mana, 20% CDR will be very helpful.

• 3025.png Although this item active may look good, I prefer the Frozen Heart for the utility it brings. If you're ahead/stomping your lane, the extra slow it brings can be very good.

• 3075.png Thornmail is very good to counter heavy AA champions, along with other armor items such as Frozen Heart. Can be a good 4th or 5th item, just remember to build some Armor and Health before this.

Situational Items

• 3742.png Deadman's Plate gives you a really nice movement speed, which helps you position yourself better and catch enemies with your skills.

• 3053.png This item can be good if you're the only in the front line and are being heavily focused by the enemy team with burst damage (if that happens, your tem can easily follow up as you are mitigating most of the enemy team's damage).

• 3083.png Usually build this as your 5th or 6th item. The extra HP and the unique regen will be really good against heavy poke compositions (99.png101.png76.png126.png) as you will be blocking most of their skillshots.

• 3748.png A potential last item as Sion. Since its damage is based on your max Health, you will be dealing a good amount with the active in the very late game, as you will stack a lot of HP with your W passive.

• 3143.png Not so nice, I prefer the Frozen Heart for the better stats. If there are more than 2 champions that hit hard with critical strikes (23.png157.png222.png202.png) tho, you should aim for this item.

• 3512.png Not a viable item anymore.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

His sustain can be really annoying, but if you play correctly, you will deny this by constantly zoning him with your enrage.png + crypticgaze.png combo. Always keep your lane warded 2043.png as you are very susceptible for ganks and his kit can ensure you'll be killed.

Start 3068.png (when ahead) OR 3110.png (when behind) against him.

VS

Darius

Hard
Darius is one of your hardest counters. Do not try to fight him at any level, otherwise you might get killed. Ask for your jungler to help you, and be extra careful after level 6. You should ban him if possible.

Post-6, try to gank other lanes and focus on objectives as much as you can.

Build 3068.png and 3512.png against him.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

This will be a very passive lane. Try to deny his farm as much as possible by freezing the lane and standing in front of your minions when you know he will try to hit it with Q, blocking the damage with your shield. Post-6 there isn't much you can do to kill him, even with ganks, as his ultimate makes it almost impossible to do.

Late game you will scale way better than him, as he is just a tank, and that's it. Sion's kit is way more suitable for this meta.

Rush 3751.png and 3512.png first against him.

VS

Ekko

Medium
Ekko is a champion that can easily first blood you with his kit, so be aware. Try your best to dodge his Q and you'll be fine. Farm safe with your E and help your team after 6.

Build 3751.pngand 3065.png (when ahead) or 3512.png (when behind) against him

VS

Fiora

Medium

Fiora just got stronger in the early game with patch 6.14. She can easily block your ultimate and all of your abilities, and that is just so sad. Before ganking, bait her Riposte fiorariposte.png with your Q and THEN start channeling your ultimate.

Build 3068.png against her.

VS

Galio

Medium

Galio's waveclear is just insane, along with his kit he becomes nearly invincible. This will be a farming lane, so do your best to freeze and try to deny him cs. Post-6 help other lanes while Zz'rot passive farms for you.

Build 3512.png first against him, or 3065.png if behind.

VS

Gangplank

Hard

Gangplank's kit can make this lane a nightmare. You can't do mutch if he Barrel raisemorale.png, and you will get zoned a lot with this skill. Although your map presence may look stronger than his, the cannonbarrage.png is instant and can really change de tides of a fight, without time to react. Don't try to fight him after 6, just farm safe and do your best to help your team, as he DOES HAVE THE DAMAGE TO KILL YOU.

Build 3068.png and then 3512.png against him, as his damage is mixed.

VS

Garen

Medium

He can silence you during your Q cast, outdamage you and escape easily with his slow removal. Try to farm safe until you hit 6, then go and help your team. Just take care of losing your turret in the process, as he is a strong splitpusher (keep your Teleport ready to go back and defend it).

Rush 3068.png against him.

VS

Gnar

Medium

He can easily jump away from your Q with his gnarE.png, farm from a safe distance and harass you. Just try to farm safe, and when he comes to attack you, throw a E into his face. Post-6 avoid overextending, as he can easily kill with the help of the jungler.

Start 3068.png against him.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

This match is really easy, you can counter Hecarim in various ways. When he comes closer to cs, use your E + Q combo. Try to zone him the most, and deny him farm by freezing the lane. Post-6 you just have to roam and help other lanes.

Build 3068.png first again him.

VS

Illaoi

Hard

Both of you are slow champions, which means you'll hardly dodge each other skills. Try to avoid getting caugh by her illaoiE.png as it will hurt you by a lot. If that happens, FIGHT HER, do not flee or you'll end up be getting the curse and the tentacles will easily hit you, as you are very slow.

Start 3068.png against her.

VS

Irelia

Hard

A good Irelia will make laning phase a nightmare. Just farm safe and help your team post-6. She can interrupt your Q with her stun, so try to reactivate it before she does. Also, she can jump into a minion while your charge it, and all-in you. If that happens, there isn't much you can do, so be aware. With enough training, you will be able to stop her dash with your knock up just in time.

Build 3047.png 3110.png 3512.png against her.

VS

Jax

Hard

Keep your distance and try to farm safe, do not overextend as he will try to jump and stun you. Freeze the lane as much as you can and avoid fighting him after 6. All you can do is ask for your jungler's help and roam to other lanes.

Jax outscales you later in the game, and can escape from your Q with his jump/ward jump.

Rush 3082.png into 3110.png against him.

VS

Kennen

Easy

Kennen can be annoying for most melee champions, but for Sion this is not the case. All you have to do is farm from a safe distance with your E and Q, deny his damage and all-in when you know the enemy jungler isn't missing. Your E slow counters his dash (he becomes at a walking speed), so use it when your jungler comes to gank. As always, keep helping your team after 6.

Build 3751.png and 3512.png first against him, or 3065.png if behind.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

Her harass kit is really annoying, try to stay away and farm from a safe distance, until you've built some MR. When she starts to cast E lissandraE.png, charge up your Q and knock up/stun to stop her from fleeing away. Her ultimate can counter yours if aimed on herself, so be aware.

Start 3065.png against her, and rush 3512.png after.

VS

Malphite

Easy

This match is maybe the easiest of all. You can deny most of his farm, zone him and roam to other lanes, as he is a bad splitpusher. Freeze the lane to deny him farm. Just care of ganks after 6, and you will be fine.

Start 3751.png and then rush 3512.png against him (1057.png first)

VS

Nasus

Medium

A good Nasus knows he can 1v1 you mid-game. Try to deny him by throwing an E + Q combo when he comes to farm. Do your best to zone him, freeze the lane so he loses CS and ask for an early gank to brinh him down. DO NOT BUILD 3512.png AGAINST NASUS!!! He will stack his Q siphoningstrikenew.png freely and infinitely if you do this.

He outscales you later in the game, but your kit is much more useful and you can easily protect your team from him.

Start 3068.png against him.

VS

Olaf

Hard

Stay away from this guy, and do your best to dodge his olafaxethrowcast.png Undertow (Q) as it will hurt you by a lot. His olafrecklessstrike.png Reckless Swing (E) will also hurt you, as it is true damage based. He can all in your all day, and if you find yourself out of position, expect being killed or having to force flash. Also, his olaffrenziedstrikes.png allows him to stay in lane for a long time, for the sustain it provides.

After both of you get level 6, there is nothing you can do to kill him, just do your best to farm and roam to other lanes.

Build order: 3068.png > 3512.png

VS

Renekton

Hard

This guy will hit you hard with his kit, even though his popularity decreased, I have played a few games in Diamond tier against him. He can easily renektonsliceanddice.png renektonpreexecute.png you when you try to charge your crypticgaze.png. He will outdamage you (and maybe even kill you, if you don't play safe), but you will scale a lot better from mid to late game.

Start 3068.png against him.

VS

Riven

Medium

She can easily escape your kit and mitigate your damage with her kit. When she tries to all-in, just throw a E onto her face and move back. Respect her damage level 1-5, otherwise you might get killed.

Post-6 she will try to all-in, so be aware of this, and keep your lane warded.

Start 3068.png against her.

VS

Shen

Medium
In the laning phase a good Shen will try to trade with you whenever it is possible. Try to avoid fighting him, and when he shenshadowdash.png to you just throw an E > Q combo to disengage and play safe. Do not overextend, or you might get ganked.

Post level-6 his game impact can be better than yours. Keep an eye on your bot and mid lane, and when he starts going back to his turret he will probably channel his Stand United (R) shenstandunited.png to an ally. If that happens, immediately throw a crypticgaze.png in his face to stop the channeling. You can also use your cannibalism.png if you know you won't hit him in time.

Unfortunately, Shen outscales you late game, as he can easily interrupt you and protect his allies, while pushing hard with the help of 3512.png. Do your best to hold his pressure top.

Build 3751.png and 3512.png first against him.

VS

Swain

Easy

Pretty easy matchup. You won't be able to kill him post-6 without a gank, but Swain early game is pretty weak. When he casts swainbeam.png in the ground flee away from it. Just watch out for ganks and to watch you do best to roam and help your team. And as always, keep your lane warded, as his slow + snare combo can result in an easy kill.

Build 3751.png and 3512.png first against him.

VS

Tahm Kench

Hard

Kinda hard to see, but a good Tahm Kench can be an unkilling CC machine if played correctly. Try to avoid his tahmkenchq.png by standing behind your minions, and if you get hit by it, just run, as he will probably all-in, tahmkenchw.png you and keep stunning until you die.

Start with 3065.png if there are 2 or more AP champions in the enemy team
Or 3751.png and 3512.png if you think AP won't be a big issue.

VS

Teemo

Easy

Satan ins't really a big deal against Sion. With him, you can even build full AD and you will stomp even harder. If he ever tries to bother you, just throw a E + Q combo at his face. His waveclear is poor, so take advantage on that to build Zz'rot if going full tank.

Start 3512.png against him, and build 3211.png3082.png if he is going AS build.

VS

Trundle

Medium

Trundle is a very tanky champion with nice waveclear potential after he builds 3077.png. His pillar trundleE.png can interrupt your Decimating Smash (Q) AND your ultimate cannibalism.png, so take care! Do not overextend against him, always keep your lane warded and try to deny him by throwing an E + Q combo when he comes to farm.

Start with  3068.png

VS

Yasuo

Hard

A good Yasuo knows he can all in you, dodge all of your skills and kill you with ease. If that is the case, play safe and farm until you hit 6, do not overextend and keep your lane warded always.

Start 3068.png against him.

About the Author Back to Top

Hello everyone! My name is Victor, I'm from Brazil and I've been playing League since 2012 with Lulu's release. I started playing Sion Season 6 because I love uncommon picks who surprises the enemy (though its becoming quite popular now), and Sion was just perfect for that. I really enjoy playing for fun/improvement and creating my own strategies, and not just being a meta slave. That being said, I climbed to Diamond by just spamming Sion in solo queue (both Top and Support) with an insane win rate of 70-80%. And though having his weaknesses, Sion can do surprisingly well, as most players do not expect facing it and therefore do not know what to do against him.

Here is my current stats with him (Source: OP.GG)

QB6MRsp.png

You can check out my stats here: http://br.op.gg/summoner/userName=vsw

Pros and Cons Back to Top

Pros

• Very high base damage
• Can deny farm by throwing an E + Q combo when the enemy comes closer
• Really strong with his CC kit, makes it almost impossible to escape from ganks/pick-offs
• Stacks HP infinitely with his deathscaressfull.pngSoul Furnace (W) passive, becoming very tanky mid-late game
• Can snipe people from far with his very long range minion projectile enrage.png
• Is a great initiator and can disrupt the whole enemy team while protecting his own with his kit
• Can roam and gank other lanes easily with cannibalism.png Unstoppable Onslaught (R)
• Is a threat/zoning tool even after dying sionpassive.png

Cons:

• Very slow and immobile champion
• Has one of the lowest base HP in the game (in order to balance with his W passive), which means he is very weak/easy to kill early
• Doesn't win the game alone, unlike some hyper carries like 157.png121.png
• His cannibalism.png can be very hard to hit, especially if you're not used to Sion

How is Sion a good Support? Back to Top

Sion is currently (patch 6.14) in the top 2 win rate Supports, just after Leona (source: OP.GG). You should check this Reddit post if you want to know more about his strenghts and weaknesses as a Support:

There is also a really nice video, made by Lone Coyote. You should check this out for more information on how to play with him on this role:

Early game Back to Top

There are some nice and unique things that Sion can do early to get advantage/slow the enemy team

1- Steal a buff

In order to do this, predict where the enemy jungler will start. Usually, it'll be at the bot side for the leash, with only a few exceptions (like 32.png9.png that will always start blue). Sit in a bush from your side and after 1:20 go walking to the buff, start attacking it and DO NOT USE ANY SKILLS, just get killed and take the buff with your passive, as you will keep it even dying. After that, TP back to your lane (you will have enough money to buy a 2055.png!) that will already be freezed, so take that as an advantage! You will let the enemy jungler behind by doing this, and he will probably try to gank you and take back his buff. Because of that, keep your lane warded and do not overextend.

2- Clear a camp + buff

This one is a little bit riskier, but Sion is able to do that. When at Blue Side, head to the enemy Raptors, start Q, charge it to its fullest from 1:38 at Raptors and kill the small ones first with one basic attack. Follow up by killing the bigger one, using your fully charged Q when it comes back. After that, you will be 30% of your health. Go straight to the red buff, get killed (do not charge your Q) and take it with your passive. Teleport back to the lane afterwards, buying a 2055.png during the channeling.

________________________________________________________________

Sion's laning phase can be very risky. As you are a very slow champion without any escape tools early (you don't have your ultimate yet), overextending/getting out of position may result in an easy gank, and that will result in your opponent snowballing you hard. In order to counter that, you must do your best to FREEZE THE LANE. An ideal scenario will be something like that:

WZjUGq4.png

Keep farming until you hit 6, then try to set up a gank and/or objectives. Remember: keep your team informed of all you want to do, warning them if you're going to gank so they can position themselves to ensure you'll get the kill(s). And don't leave your lane for long as your opponent will try to take your turret. Always push it before going back, and make sure you have 12.png up just in case.

With patch 6.14 you can even ping at your skills, summoner spells, HP/Mana bars and even jungle timers for an ever better communication. Remember to use that! Communication is key to victory.

Mid game Back to Top

This is where Sion shines the most. By keeping constant lane pressure with your 3512.png, you will force the enemy top laner to stay defending his lane, causing an easy 5v4 in your team's favor. If he ever tries to follow you, he will end up losing a lot of farm and even his turret. Try to pick off immobile champions with your ultimate: you will almost always force a 4.png, giving your team an advantage. Sion can easily tower dive with his insane amount of health and resistances. Stay with your team a much as possible while keeping pressure with your Zz'rot, and you will snowball even harder.

Late game Back to Top

In the late game Sion is an even bigger threat for the enemy team. As always, remember to keep lane pressure with 3512.png. Your job here is to stay with your team, seek for initiation opportunities, pick-off enemies out of position and peel for your carries (for those who aren't familiarized with the term, peeling is protecting your carries with CC, preventing your enemies from getting to them and mitigating as much damage as possible). Remember to keep your ultimate for initiations, try not to get out of position if you know your team won't follow you. Just use it to escape as a last resort.

Even if you die, you will continue zoning the enemies. As Sion gains a lot of damage with his passive, if the enemy team doesn't respect that, you will end up killing one or more enemies.
