Summoner Spells Back to Top

There are only 2 real options for Summoner Spell setups on supports and Sona is no different. 4.png is essential for Sona as it is her primary method of engage and disengage. With 4.png, you can pull off the famous 4.png > sonacrescendo.png combo that can set up a really good teamfight. Early on in the game (i.e. pre level 6) be careful about using Flash when simply using sonasongofdiscord.png to get in range for either sonacrescendo.png or sonahymnofvalor.png would've sufficed. Sona is an extremely squishy, immobile champion early on and thus susceptible to ganks. Having 4.png up means you can play more aggressive in lane since you can avoid ganks with it or use it to all in them once you reach level 6. That being said, the most common mistake Sona players make is thinking the only way to land sonacrescendo.png is by using 4.png. I would say 80% of the time you do not need to 4.png in order to get off a good ult. Only use it when the engage/disengage would not be possible without it. A better way to set up a good sonacrescendo.png is by using sonasongofdiscord.png > sonasongofdiscord.pngsonapassive.png > sonacrescendo.png. Saving 4.png for only when it's absolutely necessary will allow you to have more playmaking potential in more opportune moments.

The only real decision about Summoner spells you need to make is when to take 14.png vs 3.png. The decision can be broken down into a series of yes or no questions:

1. Am I below Diamond? If Yes, take 14.png, if No, proceed to question 2.

Sona's greatest strength is in the early laning phase. If you are below Diamond, your lane opponents will not know how to position well and thus you should take ignite in order to bring increased kill pressure to the lane. Whittle them down with sonahymnofvalor.png and then once they get low, you can 4.png > 14.png > sonahymnofvalor.png > sonahymnofvalor.pngsonapassive.png for an easy kill early on. In higher elo, your lane opponents won't subject themselves to constant harass and so it's harder to get them low enough to where ignite really bring much to the table .

2. Do I have kill pressure in lane? If yes, take 14.png, if No, proceed to question 3.

Kill pressure in lane is largely determined by the match ups so I'll recommend when to take it against specific supports in the Matchups section. Generally speaking, you have higher kill potential when there's a squishy support than against a tanky one. If you're not sure, just take 3.png to be safe.

3. Do they have a strong heal presence on their team (either through self healing or target healing)? If yes, take 14.png, if No, take 3.png

Even if you don't have kill pressure in lane, there are some cases in which you would want to take Ignite. Take it if they have a strong healing presence like 16.png or if their team has carries that have strong self heal such as 9.png43.png76.png106.png8.png. However, If you already have 2 or more14.png on your team then just opt for 3.png instead.

Masteries Back to Top

There are a couple different setups you should look to switch between on a game by game basis. They differ based on how aggressive or passive you want to build and play. The 0/18/12 page I have listed above is a good "hybrid" page that allows you to have a nice mix of offensive and defensive capability. I'll go into some changes you can make depending on the situation as well as offer a rational for the much debated Thunderlord's vs Windspeaker's Keystone Mastery decision.

I like to take Merciless over Meditation in lanes where I'm looking for kills or to engage in fights often. The increased damage on low health targets can make the difference between getting a double kill or getting double killed. Usually you can take this against squishy supports or aggressive bot lanes, basically any lane you envision getting into a scrap with. Meditation can be good when you have little kill pressure against their lane (16.png40.png44.png etc, I go more into this in the Matchups section) since it gives mana regen, an extremely important stat that allows you to sustain or poke more.

I typically take Bandit over Dangerous Game as the extra gold is more useful for low income support.

If I want to go AP carry putting 5 into Precision is nice because of the extra Magic Penetration which scales better than the extra 5% CDR, otherwise the extra 5% early and the increased cap makes it hard to pass up in most scenarios.

Thunderlord's Decree vs Windspeaker's Blessing

This is a really debated topic but in my mind it comes down to how you wish to play out the laning phase. Sona can easily proc the extra Thunderlord's damage using her traditional harass combo of AA > sonahymnofvalor.png > sonahymnofvalor.pngsonapassive.png which will quickly proc the Thunderlord's damage on top of the sonahymnofvalor.png powerchord. This combination can take almost a 1/4 of the AD or squishy support's health if done right. Therefore  you should take this against lanes that you can harass down without getting harassed in return. If you plan on playing safely against the opposing lane, don't take Thunderlord's since you won't be getting as much use out of it compared to Windspeaker's Blessing.

Windspeaker's Blessing is useful if you're going to get out poked in a lane (e.g 143.png43.png161.png) so you can heal through their harass which is stronger than yours or against champions who you're not going to get many opportunities to harass without putting yourself in danger of getting engaged upon (e.g. 201.png53.png412.png111.png

Sona's abilities are nice in that they're easy to understand and a lot of versatility to how you use them. There's no absolute skill order for Sona. Typically you level up what you need and change it up situationally. The skill order I have listed is a good balanced order that you can go if you're not sure what you need. I'll go into each ability and how and when to use it and describes scenarios in which you would max one over the other.

sonapassive.png  - Power Chord

Power Chord is Sona's amazing passive that changes the effect of her next auto after 3 spell uses. Correct and timely utilization of her Power Chord is essential to being a good Sona. A lot of people are deceived by the relative simplicity of her spells and think she's a faceroll champ whereas a good Sona is CONSTANTLY playing around usage of the Power Chords and not just mindlessly spamming spells. There are 3 different Power Chords she can use that change depending on the most recent spell used:

  1. sonahymnofvalor.pngsonapassive.png  This is her Q-Power Cord, essentially this is just an extra powerful auto attack that inflicts bonus magic damage. Using this empowered auto attack is key to winning trades and harassing down lane opponents.
  2. sonaariaofperseverance.pngsonapassive.png This is her W-Power Chord. This is an oft forgotten and underused Power Chord that reduces the target's damage output. During an extended engage, these should be used against high damage targets to reduce their damage onto your team. If you're building offensively, you still pack a good punch thus heightening its offensive and defensive capabilities.
  3. sonasongofdiscord.pngsonapassive.png This is her E-Power Chord. This is her only form of CC outside of her ultimate and is extremely useful as an engaging/disengaging tool as it applies a heavy slow to the target. Use this often to setup ganks, run away if you're about to get caught, chase someone down, or to chain CC with sonacrescendo.png.

sonahymnofvalor.png  - Hymn of Valor

This is your main harass spell. It's worth noting that its range is slightly higher than that of your auto attacks so it can be used to harass from afar even if you're not range for a full auto attack combo. Additionally, there isn't a cast time so you can either back off immediately after using it or continue moving closer for follow up auto attacks. Always start with sonahymnofvalor.png and charge it once in the fountain. Cast it once again to leash and by the time you get to lane you'll have 2 stacks making your next sonahymnofvalor.png proc the sonahymnofvalor.pngsonapassive.png for some heavy damage level 1. sonahymnofvalor.png also produces an aura in which tagged allies receive extra damage on their next attack so if you're able to harass the opponent while next to your ADC and they harass too, you can do a ton of damage. This doesn't happen too often though and it's been my experience that the ADC will typically either not care or not be aware of what your aura does so don't be afraid to harass even if you can't tag them with the aura.

As far as maxing this first, most people do and it's never a bad idea not too, especially when building AP items. If you're going the utility route, it may be best to put a few points in it and max sonaariaofperseverance.png instead since you won't be putting out much damage anyways.

sonaariaofperseverance.png  - Aria of Perseverance

This gives a nice heal as well as an AOE shield from the produced aura. Combined with sonaariaofperseverance.png you have great offensive and defensive capabilities. Using the heal along with the shield is can result in some pretty effective trades but you must be near your teammates in order to tag them with the aura and the shield. Knowing this, try not to stray to far from your ADC otherwise they might not get the benefits of the added shield until it's too late.

Early game, try to be aware of the high mana costs of using it constantly. Try to rely on potions and save your heal until you get to around 50% health or if your ADC needs it, if you don't, you may find yourself with some serious mana issues.

Once you start grouping up in the  mid and late game, try to keep everyone tagged with the aura so they all get the shield.

If your damage isn't super high in the mid-late game or you're going a utility focused build, try to use your sonaariaofperseverance.pngsonapassive.png to reduce damage output on enemy carries.

sonasongofdiscord.png  - Song of Celerity

Sona's main mobility spell that allows her to zoom you and your team around the map in short bursts. The speed increase doesn't scale super well (may change in 6.14) so typically you max this last but if you find yourself rotating around the map a lot putting some points in this over sonahymnofvalor.png may be more useful. More so than the speed increase, the main benefits of sonasongofdiscord.png comes from its Power Chord which applies the heavy slow.

sonacrescendo.png  - Crescendo

Sona's defining ultimate ability can change the tide of game with a 5 man stun. This AOE stun can go on pretty short cool down by mid game and allow you opportunities to make all sorts of plays, especially when used in conjunction with 4.png. As I've mentioned a few times earlier, the range and hit box of this ability is deceptive and most people underestimate its range. Contrary to popular belief, not every engage you make needs to made with 4.png. It's often better to just ult and charge up a sonasongofdiscord.pngsonapassive.png for follow up CC after the stun finishes.

As far as usage goes, try to save ult for multiple target team fights early on until you get some CDR. Unless it's a really key target or you need to peel a carry, try to use sonasongofdiscord.pngsonapassive.png for CC instead and only ult when necessary. Once you start getting to 40-45% CDR you can use your ult fairly often and it'll probably be back up by the time the next fight rolls around.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Sona procs the passive on this pretty easily so no reason to anything other than this.
Go for the refillable if you're against an extremely poke heavy lane. It's more efficient than constantly buying pots on every back.

Core Items

These are the core items for a utility/defensive focused build. It's mainly just typical support items with some slots left open for situational items. If you're in lower elo, don't bother with this build and just stick to AP builds.
These are the core items of a hybrid build you can go if you want a little AP but still have some utility. I like this if I happened to be snowballing bot but have taken defensive runes and masteries.
Here's a core item AP build you should try to go for in low elo and if you're daring, high elo as well. Sona synergizes extremely well with Lichbane and it's not uncommon to almost 1 shot squishies with this build.

Situational Items

This item is nice in any utility or hybrid based build against a team with high AD or against a team you need to kite against.
If you're going AP and getting one shot before you can get spells off, invest in a negatron cloak and build this before Void Staff or Deathcap.
If their team has a lot of healing and no one else on your team is building this or Executioner's Calling, then it can be useful. Pretty situational though.
Great for hybrid builds since it gives decent amount of AP and armor and can help out your AD if they're snowballing. I usually only take this when ahead, if I'm behind go for the Icebourne Gauntlet instead for extra kiting potential. They both build out of Glacial Shroud so you have some flexibility.
Only really take this if I'm ahead and our team is heavily auto attack based (so double or triple ADC comps)
A very snowbally item. If you find yourself dying a lot as Sona, don't build this as it is much riskier on her than safe supports like Janna. Buying a Dark Seal and not upgrading can be useful though since it's not that much of an investment.
    Typically get this if snowballing.
If you're popping off as AP Sona, this item will put the nail in the coffin. Insane damage from your Q and insane heals from your W. Only reason this is situational is that it's extremely expensive and with limited gold, you're better off going for Void Staff for the earlier power spike.

Sona has an extremely diverse build path depending on how you want to play her. Typically most builds fall into one of 3 categories: AP/Damage, Hybrid, Utility/Defensive. I've mentioned numerous times that the AP builds are undeniably better for carrying at lower elo and past Diamond, it's really a judgement call on whether or not you can make it work. There are definitely some who do and you can check out their op.gg and see how they do it, since I'm not one of them :)

As a side note, getting to these item power spikes with your limited gold income is tricky if you're not immediately snowballing. Make sure you're getting the most out of the gold generation aspect of 3303.png since she can generate massive amounts of gold if used constantly.

There are also a ton of builds that I've neglected to mention but are perfectly viable such ones that incorporate 3145.png3152.png3040.png etc. For the sake of simplicity and my lack of experience building those items regularly, I didn't put them in this guide but feel free to try them out and see how they work for you.

VS

Alistar

Medium

This matchup really just centers around Alistar's ability to use his headbutt.pngpulverize.png combo correctly. Level 1 and 2 try to harass him down as much as you can before he can level up his combo. He has no ability to return your long range harass so take Thunderlord's and get off as many AA > sonahymnofvalor.png > sonahymnofvalor.pngsonapassive.png combos as you can. You may even force him to level up triumphantroar.png at level 2 which delays when he gets his combo.

Once he does have pulverize.png and headbutt.png leveled up, try to stay outside of his combo range until he blows those abilities and harass as much as you can for a few seconds until it's back up.

Also, be aware of when you're pushed up to their turret as a common engage tactic is to 4.png onto you, pulverize.png, and then headbutt.png into tower range. Knowing this, do not try to harass him or their adc when they're farming under turret.

VS

Annie

Medium

You typically don't see her very much anymore in the bot lane after nerfs to her base damages and buffs to her scaling, but when you do, you just really have to be careful of her level 6 all in with infernalguardian.png. Pre-6, try to harass her down since her early game damage isn't as high as it used to be. You can even try to level 2 all in her with 14.png if you have it since she's really squishy.

Use the visual indicator of her stun passive to know when to play aggressive and when not to play aggressive. At level 6, if you're not behind and she' not building full AP, you just need to be careful of infernalguardian.png stun but not really the damage. If she ults you, immediately sonacrescendo.png as soon as you can and sonasongofdiscord.png or 4.png away depending on how much damage you took. Be aware of the damage from Tibber's auto attack so try to stun him as well or  sonasongofdiscord.pngsonapassive.png him to get away since he deals a ton of damage.

VS

Ashe

Easy

Avoid her asheW.png harass by staying behind minions. Harass her down once she blows asheW.png. At level 6, be careful of her asheR.png but also be looking for an all in opportunity with sonacrescendo.png since she's fairly immobile and squishy.

VS

Bard

Easy

Unless their Bard is a god tier Bard, this match up is usually pretty easy. You can out trade in damage with sonahymnofvalor.png but still try to avoid trading until he uses his meep-empowered auto attacks since those combined bardQ.png can hurt. Otherwise your lane can out damage and outsustain his most of the time as long as you don't get double stunned by bardQ.png. To avoid this, constantly be aware of the angle and range he is from you so that he can't stun you to a minion, the lane walls (avoid brushes!), or your ADC. bardQ.png has a very short range so you can generally just sonasongofdiscord.png out of range of it and be fine.

432.png also sets up ganks very well with bardE.png so try to get some wards behind their tower (just below their far tri brush if you're blue side, or just tri brush if you're purple side) to alert yourself of potential incoming ganks.

VS

Blitzcrank

Hard

A cancerous match up that just sucks. Similar to 12.png, you pretty much have to back the fuck off if his rocketgrab.png is up. A good 53.png will use your lack of mobility against you and rush 3117.png and just walk or use overdrive.png up to you, powerfist.png , and then rocketgrab.pngstaticfield.png and there's not much you can do about it. Just ban this fucker if you have a ban because even if you know how to dodge his rocketgrab.png your adc most likely doesn't and if they get grabbed there's is very little you can do until level 6 when you get sonacrescendo.png  and just use it on their ADC to prevent follow up damage.

Level up sonasongofdiscord.png at level 3 and use it to get you and your ADC out of range of rocketgrab.png if 53.png starts walking up to you. If he misses his shit, go ham and get off as many sonahymnofvalor.png as you can since he can't return harass and his abilities have high cool downs and mana cost. If you notice he's low on mana, feel free to play aggressively since without mana, he's a sitting duck.

If your lane can survive without feeding in laning phase, he drops off and is not AS bad in the mid/late game.

VS

Brand

Easy

This match up is easy after post-rework 63.png left his support ability easier to play against. Avoid his constant brandfissure.png and brandblaze.png harass and he'll burn through his mana pool pretty quickly at which point it's pretty easy to all in him since he's very immobile and squishy. If he's not building AP, he becomes pretty irrelevant later on.

VS

Braum

Hard

Braum is a pretty good counter to Sona. While not as cancerous as 53.png, a good Braum can make life rough for Sona. The main thing to be aware of is his passive, braumpassive.png, which can easily stun lock if you're not careful. Avoid his braumQ.png at all costs and if you do get hit by it, back off and let the stack wear off before going back in. Also, DO NOT LET BRAUM WALK UP TO YOU. If he gets one auto off on you, he can easily combo it up braumQ.png and the slow from it and next thing you know you're stunned up and just die in 2 seconds, especially if he took 14.png. Use your sonasongofdiscord.png and stay away.

He also counters you pretty heavily due to his annoying braumE.png which negates your sonacrescendo.png completely. Past level 6 you or your team needs to bait out this ability before you can use sonacrescendo.png otherwise you might find yourself flashing and doing nothing which is pretty silly. Try harassing with sonahymnofvalor.png and getting autos off until he uses his braumE.png  and then you have the small opportunity to engage if you want but generally I'd advise against all ins in a 2v2 since he can disengage or you get stunned by his braumpassive.png pretty easily in the chaos of a fight.

Also, a common method of engagement from him is using braumW.png from a bush onto a front line minion that you're hiding behind, auto, braumQ.png and then maybe an auto from their ADC and boom, you're dead. Most often this will happen right as you're getting ganked so be careful staying too close to their frontline minions.

VS

Caitlyn

Hard

Caitlyn can safely poke you down and zone you with caitlynyordletrap.png so try to play safe and only harass when she's about to last hit.

If you get hit by caitlynentrapment.png, immediately move to the side and not straight back in order to avoid the follow up caitlynpiltoverpeacemaker.png

Not much you can do against her without a gank so just weather the storm and sustain through as much as possible.

VS

Corki

Easy

He's pretty short ranged and so you can look for harass opportunities whenever possible. Avoid the phosphorusbomb.png and missilebarrage.png, both of which are fairly easy to dodge, and you should be fine.

VS

Draven

Medium

Draven has a lot of damage with his dravenspinning.png so try to only harass when he's going in for CS since you'll come out behind in most trades early on. Pretty much with this lane, depending on his support, you're just trying to not feed him. He's a snowball reliant champ and if doesn't pop off in laning phase he's pretty manageable and easy to CC and burst down.

VS

Ezreal

Easy

You don't have much kill pressure in this lane since he's really safe but neither does he. Avoid getting hit repeatedly by his ezrealmysticshot.png and you should be fine. Even if they have an aggressive support, you're still pretty safe since he take a while to scale up.

VS

Janna

Medium

This a fairly boring matchup in my opinion. She plays super safe and has great disengage so all ins typically are hard to pull off in a 2v2 scenario. Her eyeofthestorm.png can easily shield the damage from your sonahymnofvalor.png for the majority of the laning phase and is on similar cooldown to your sonahymnofvalor.png so she'll almost always have it ready.

You kind of have to play a mind game with her and bait out eyeofthestorm.png by walking up and just simply auto'ing and saving your sonahymnofvalor.png until the shield wears off. You can also walk up to them and pretend like you're looking to harass their ADC with sonahymnofvalor.png but immediately switch to her instead after she tries to preemptively shield the ADC.

Her eyeofthestorm.png also gives a bonus AD to the shielded target so try not to engage in 2v2s when the shield is up since you'll come out on the losing end, all else equal.

VS

Jhin

Easy

Not super hard to play against, he's fairly immobile and has low attack speed so try to harass him whenever possible and look for the all in at level 6. Be mindful of where he put his jhinE.png so you don't get snared by jhinW.png

VS

Kalista

Medium

Depending on her support, this matchup can be really easy or really hard. Harass her down early and play safe once she's 6.

VS

Karma

Medium

Karma is similar to Sona and the matchup is pretty easy if you're able to avoid her constant karmaheavenlywave.png and karmachakra.png empowered karmaheavenlywave.png. She's really mobile and hard to get good harass on due to karmasoulshield.png so mostly you just want to weather the storm and avoid as much harass as possible, sustain through it with sonaariaofperseverance.png, and level 6 you can all in if she gets too close.

VS

Kog'Maw

Easy

A sitting duck, Kog'Maw takes a while to scale up so use his immobility and squisheness as an invitation to constantly harass. Even if you have the upper hand early on, still puts some points into sonaariaofperseverance.png as once he's 6, the kogmawlivingartillery.png can absolutely wreck you if you're not able to dodge them. Otherwise, similar to most immobile adn squishy ADCs, he's really susceptible to CC in an all in.

VS

Leona

Hard

Her CC is extremely powerful and good Leonas are hard to play against. Playing this match up relies on recognizing windows of opportunity, maintaining good vision, and knowing how to react in skirmishes against her.

Level 1 she is fairly weak and you should be looking to harass her as much as possible since she most likely started leonashieldofdaybreak.png which is a melee range ability. Harass her down enough so that she's less likely to all in you at level 2/3 with her leonashieldofdaybreak.pngleonazenithblade.png combo. A common all in tactic she'll use it at level 2/3, she'll 4.png > leonashieldofdaybreak.png > 14.png > AA > leonazenithblade.png > AA and if their ADC follows up, you're either really chunked or dead. The lower health she is, the less likely it is that she'll use this combo as she is not very tank early on. If she misses her leonazenithblade.png don't be afraid to use this window of opportunity to harass her down.

Level 6 is a huge powerspike for her so try to get level 6 before her if possible since you absolutely need to have sonacrescendo.png to survive an all in at this point. Once she's 6, stay away from your ADC so you don't get AOE stunned and when she does eventually engage onto your ADC, immediately sonacrescendo.png their ADC so that they can't get much damage off for the duration of leonasolarflare.png stun. You can even lay a beating with sonahymnofvalor.png on their ADC while yours is stunned up by leonasolarflare.pngleonashieldofdaybreak.png and you'll most likely be able to do more damage onto their ADC.

Once you start grouping in team fights, rush 3222.png before 3190.png since the cleanse is extremely useful until your carries can build 3140.png

VS

Lucian

Hard

A good Lucian is difficult to play against unless you have a safe ADC like 51.png. Be careful of his early aggression with his lucianE.pnglucianQ.png combo. His passive, lucianpassive.png is where his damage is coming from so avoid being in range for him to proc it.

VS

Lulu

Medium

Lulu is similar to Sona in that she can dish out some pretty decent damage with her auto and luluq.png harass. Play this lane similar to how you play against 43.png and avoid her skill shot harass and return fire whenever possible. Try not to walk up to her as getting luluw.png is a death sentence, especially if they're running 14.png.

If you're going to all in their lane, try to do so before she get lulur.png as that ability prevents their AD from getting bursted down. If she does use it, switch targets immediately and burst them down instead.

VS

Miss Fortune

Easy

Pretty easy matchup provided you don't chunked down by missfortunericochetshot.png. Avoid staying behind low health minions and harass whenever possible and this lane should be easy depending on the support.

VS

Morgana

Medium

Mostly boring matchup since you'll spend the majority of the time avoiding darkbindingmissile.png snares and running away from tormentedsoil.png pools. You can harass her if she misses her darkbindingmissile.png since her blackshield.png is on a higher cooldown than your sonahymnofvalor.png. Put a few points into sonahymnofvalor.png early so you can break through the blackshield.png shield which will allow follow up CC to land.

Save your sonacrescendo.png until after she burns blackshield.png so that you don't waste it since it will negate it.

VS

Nami

Medium

A pretty equal and fun match up to play that is really dependent on the skill of those involved.

Level 1 you should avoid trading with her since her namiW.png does a lot of damage level 1 as well as heals for a fair amount. Whenever you do harass with sonahymnofvalor.png, try to do it at max range or if she just used namiW.png to heal herself or her ADC. This will allow you to win out on trades by playing around the cooldown. Don't be afraid to take 14.png and get scrappy with her.

Avoiding her namiQ.png is not super hard if she hasn't already used the slow from her namiE.png. Typically most Namis will aim the Bubble just behind you since most people instinctively try to avoid it by walking backwards. So if you get into a trade with Nami while in namiQ.png range, be aware of this fact and be ready to step back towards her if she aims that bubble behind you.

Her namiE.png empowers her autos and gives a slow that you need to be careful of so back off until it wears off. Since getting hit with it is a surefire way to get hit by a follow up namiQ.png.

As for avoiding her namiR.png, try to move in a direction perpendicular to the wave as soon as she casts it. It's fairly slow moving so it's not that hard to avoid.

VS

Nautilus

Hard

This guy is really tanky and can perma CC you with nautilusanchordrag.png nautilusgrandline.png and a deceptive amount of damage from nautilussplashzone.png. Level up sonasongofdiscord.png early on and stay out of his range. If he misses his nautilusanchordrag.png  he is vulnerable and you can harass him down pretty easily. If he engages onto your ADC, start laying down the damage on their ADC to prevent follow up damage while you wait for the CC to subside.

This matchup isn't as bad anymore since his base damages on nautilussplashzone.png got nerfed at the time of this writing so don't be afraid to get scrappy.

VS

Sivir

Medium

Sivir is an okay matchup. A lot of your success depends on if you can bait her into using spellshield.png. Like 40.png, you want to bait out the shield by walking up and auto attacking and wait for her to use shield and then you can use sonahymnofvalor.png. If she doesn't fall for this or wises up to your trickery, just walk up and lead with a sonahymnofvalor.png and she'll hesitate and you can get the damage off. It's all about the mind games!

VS

Soraka

Medium

An extremely boring matchup since you'll never be able to harass down their ADC and Soraka typically plays very far back. Always take 14.png in this matchup to reduce healing effects even though you don't have much kill pressure in this lane until level 6.

Always try to harass Soraka if she's in range since she has no self heal and is reliant on her pots to keep her health up. If you manage to avoid her starcall.png which is her main method of  sustain, you can generally all in her with 14.png if she gets too close.

In lane, once you get sonacrescendo.png, she's susceptible to CC so dont' be afraid to all in with sonacrescendo.png and 14.png and you can usually get a free kill.

In a gank or teamfight, focus the Soraka always since she can just spam heals unless she's dealt with first. Lead with ignite and proceed to focus her down whenever possible.

VS

Taric

Medium

Not that hard of a matchup early on as long as you avoid his dazzle.png which isn't that hard. Pre 6 you can try to harass as much as possible. All ins are difficult past 6 due to his tarichammersmash.png which grants invulnerability thus preventing any sort of burst all in.

VS

Thresh

Medium

This matchup is really dependent on how good Thresh is. Harass him down early and avoid his threshQ.png by playing behind minions. As soon as he misses his abilities, go in for harass since he has poor sustain and will less likely to go in on you even if he does land threshQ.png since he'll be low. If your ADC gets hooked, try to see where their ADC is. If they're far away from Thresh, he most likely won't go in on the second tug but if he does, you can burst him down since he's pretty squishy early on. If he gets off a close range threshQ.pngthreshE.png combo then try to focus damage on their ADC since you'll out trade their lane in an extended skirmish.

Similar to 53.png, a good Thresh will use mobility against you and try to walk up to you or your ADC and lead with threshE.png and then threshQ.png so invest a point into sonasongofdiscord.png early at level 3 and back off if you know he has his abilities up. Remember, his threshQ.png has lower cooldown if he landed his previous one, and higher cooldown if he missed it.

Thresh is also god tier at setting up ganks which is one of Sona's biggest weaknesses so try to be aware of where their jungler is since Thresh can easily throw out his threshW.png behind him out of vision range, 4.png  onto you, threshE.png, and then threshQ.png and you're dead to that combined with the jungler/ADC damage.  Knowing where the jungler will help in avoid this scenario and playing further back if you know you're a potential gank target.

Also, many Thresh players will give away the fact that they're looking for a threshW.png gank and position really close to their tri brush waiting for you to overextend. Deep wards can also help if you can get some behind their turret so you can see if he's trying to get off a threshW.png assisted gank.

VS

Trundle

Medium

Pretty much the only thing you need to worry about is his trundleE.png which can set up ganks very easily and slow you down. Wait for him to blow cooldowns and harass him down with everything you got. He also does a deceptive amount of damage so try to kite back and heal your ADC if he gets onto them. Taking 3.png in this matchup is not a bad idea.

VS

Twitch

Easy

Pretty easy to deal with early on, just be careful of poison damage. Bring pinks and put them in the lane brushes to avoid any sneaky surprises and you should be fine.

VS

Vayne

Easy

Vayne is extremely weak early on and is easy to harass down. Bring it to her and deny her as much CS as possible so that she reaches her powerspike really late. Be careful if she's paired with a strong CC support since her vaynesilveredbolts.png procs do a  lot of damage if she can get it off multiple times in a row.

VS

Vel'Koz

Medium

Vel'Koz has an extremely high amount of damage and whenever he's played as support, they'll typically rush AP items so you really have to respect his damage. Avoid getting poked down in lane by his velkozQ.png by walking forward since they tend to aim it so it hits you as you're trying to walk away.

He has pretty low cooldowns but if he blows them don't be afraid to go in for some harass since he's pretty squishy. Most of this lane is just avoiding getting poked down and then going for an all in at level 6 since he's susceptible to CC and ganks. Whatever you do, do not let him snowball since he can easily 1v2 if he gets fed. If you feed him an early kill, play safe and build defensively and prevent him from snowballing.

VS

Zilean

Medium

Zilean is really annoying and you mostly just want to avoid getting hit by timebomb.png since if you get stun locked by 2 of them, you're pretty much dead. From the support position, his timebomb.png don't do too much damage so you shouldn't have much trouble sonaariaofperseverance.png through it, it's just the stun you want to avoid. All in's are pretty difficult due to his rage inducing chronoshift.png which can negate your burst so try to sonacrescendo.png both him and his ADC during an all in and focus down whoever wasn't marked with chronoshift.png .

VS

Zyra

Hard

Cancerous matchup. At the time of this writing, her damage output is insane and she can easily zone you. If she's paired with a 51.png then you're fucked no matter who your ADC is. Buy some pots, put a second point in sonaariaofperseverance.png at level 3 and wait till 6 for an all in since she's really squishy. Also, take Windspeaker's Blessing in this matchup so you can sustain better.

If she doesn't get 10 kills in laning phase she's usually pretty manageable and can easily be CC'd and killed.

Early Game Back to Top

Typically, early game refers to the laning phase and levels 1-6. Sona has a reputation for being a lane bully and its for a good reason, her sonahymnofvalor.png harass can shut down an enemy lane and essentially 1v2 when ahead.

To start out, when leashing for your jungler, make sure have 1 sonapassive.png charge from using sonahymnofvalor.png in fountain. Then use one more sonahymnofvalor.png for the leash. There are 2 reasons for this, one, you give your jungler a stronger leash which will help them clear faster. The mana cost is irrelevant since by the time you finish walking to lane, you'll be back at full mana (provided you use it immediately as the camp spawned). The second reason is you want to have 2 stacks of sonapassive.png so that you can AA > sonahymnofvalor.png > sonapassive.png for a huge chunk of damage at level 1. If you waste the power chord on the camp, you lose out on the immediate pressure.

Use level 1 to harass as much as possible since there are very few lanes that can out trade you at level 1. Even in bad matchups such as 412.png201.png53.png89.png etc. getting them low early will reduce the likelihood of a level 2 all in by them or allow you to look for a level 2 all in.
