Summoner Spells Back to Top

Flash- It's a must if you want to escape or do a safe engage. I would not reccomend Ghost as it is the same usefull as your E: which is your key ability to spam.

Exhaust- Even though I like having kill potential: Exhaust is usefull versus every opponent. The slow is good early, the lesser resistances are useful all the game, even though its not a lot of bonus damage. The best thing about the exhaust is that it makes 1 opponent deal less than half of his original damage. You can 1v1 anyone with this. Anyone.

Ignite- My favorite ability to get first blood. Use it when the enemy team got champions with heals. Soraka, Dr. Mundo, Alistar, Aatrox and Sona especially. With the recent exhaust nerfs ignite is a viable option in over half of your matchups.

Masteries Back to Top

I chose 0/18/12 with Windspeaker's Blessing as my go-to Mastery page, just because of the sheer ultily it gives.
If you dont agree with me: You can go with 18/12/0 with Deathfire or 0/18/12 with Thunderlords if you want to go real ham. I'd not suggest it, but if you play her mid: I'd go with that in stead.

Here I'll sum up all of the masteries, and rate them from 1/10 on how good they are for you. 1 is completely useless. 2-4 means that you gain benefits from it, but it wont affect you to such an extent. 5-7 means that it will make you more powerful, and it is uselfull when used properly. 8-10 means that it is mandatory for playing well with Sona.

FEROCITY
Fury: 4% atk speed is rather useless. With the aa reset on passive: Attack speed is only for prolonged fights. You cant survive that long. 2/10

Sorcery: 2% bonus AP dmg, take this over Fury, but Wanderer pays more off. 5/10

Fresh Blood: 10+1 per level damage with your first aa. If you can use this 2 times in a teamfight: That is a potential 56 bonus damage, and AD on top of that. AD dmg is good in case you pop off, since they can't just buy MR to counter you. 5-7/10

Feast: 20 health by killing a creep on 30 sec cd. This is a good excuse to take a few minions :3 It is not bad though, since it will give you on average about 1400hp per game if you use it well, but what is 1400hp when you take 70 farm from your adc? 1-3/10

Expose Weakness: Damaging enemies make them take 3% bonus dmg from your allies. What are you? A support? If you have a premade or a good adc, take it. In low elo or whilist playing SoloQ Id not take it.... Ever. 2-6/10

Vampirism: 2% lifesteal and spellvamp. Before this was bonus lifeteal and spellvamp, now it is actually decent. Imagine you do 1000dmg, then you heal for 20hp. Not a huge bonus, but if you get a lot of damage: it is viable. 3-4/10

Natural talent: +10 AD and 15AP at level 18. Not a bad ability at all, Im actually quite fond of it. Mixed damage is very good, and this will help you a lot if you want to max out AP. 7-10

Bounty Hunter: 1.5% bonus damage per enemy killed. Nice if you want to roam, but it will be quite hard to stack. Usually you will end up with 4.5% or 6% bonus damage, which is quite good. 8/10

Double Edged Sword: 5% bonus damage and you take bonus 2.5% bonus damage. It is quite good early, but remember that it scales with the enemy team. It is good when ahead, and bad when behind. 2/4-10

Battle Trance: 5% bonus damage over 5 sec. You can't use this coorectly no matter how hard you try. Your job is the aa-Q-passive aa combo, or the Q-passive aa combo. It is strong, but it is also quite slow to reuse. You might actaully get bonus damage the 2nd time you combo, but you might also be dead then. 2-5/10

Battering Blows: 7% bonus armor pen. This blows. You can't use it unless you go AD. 1/10

Piercing Thoughts: 7% bonus magic pen. This is almost just as bad, you dont want penetration with this build anymore. 1/2-10

Warlords Bloodlust: Up to 20% lifesteal the less health you have. 50% benefit for minions. This is for AD only. 2/10

Fevor of Battle: As of season 7: It is currently useless for Sona. 2/10

Deathfire Touch: 8+60% bonus AD and 25% AP as magic damage. It scales quite decent. Expect it to do about 100-200 damage lategame. 8/10

CUNNING
Wanderer: 3% movement speed out of combat. Remember 3% of 500 is 515. Up to 30 bonus movespeed out of fountain, which a standard of about 10-15 when using your E: It is quite a good passive. 8/10

Savagery: 5 bonus damage versus minions. Remember it is NOT against enemy champions. As a midlaner or a jungler: Take this. But this is a support guide. 2/10

Runic Affinity: Buffs last 15% longer from monsters. If you get fed: It is simply amazing. But you are a support. 3-6/10

Secret Stash: Eat cookies in stead of using health potions. I personally never use health potions anymore: As when you sell 3(-150+75) you lose 75. But if you use 1 or more health potions: You lose more money than a refillable flask. 2-3/10

Assassin: 2% bonus damage when no allies are nearby. This is insanely good if your adc suicides "for a better cause". Try ganking their jungle, 1v1ing their mid/toplaner or even going 1v1 versus their adc if you get a good chance for it. 2-7/10

Merciless: 5% bonus damage to champions below 40% hp. Perfect executioning ability. You cant say no to 5% bonus damage. 8/10

Meditation: 1.5% of missing mana per 5 sec. Unless you pick away one of the mana regen items, or you go for tear: This mastery is useless. It gives 2 bonus mana regen in lategame per sec if you have 0 mana. This can be a clutch ability, but so can Merciless. 3-6/10

Greenfathers Gift: Deal 3% of enemies current hp after leaving bush. You are no camper. You are a support. No, I am Patric. 2-3/10

Bandit: 1 gold per enemy minion killed nearby. 3 gold per AA (5sec cd) This is the go-to support mastery. It will give you from 100-3000 gold per game. Use it well and you can buy cool stuff. 6-10/10

Dangerous Game: Kills and Assists restore 5% mana and hp. It is a very clutch mastery, and can make you a beast in teamfights. Remember it is only 5% though: Which is about 100hp and 50 mana. 3-5/10

Precision: 8.5 Lethality and 3+0.3(per level) magic pen. It is good for AD champions. The magic penetration is just sad. 3-4/10

Intelligence: 5% higher cooldown cap and 5% cdr throughout the entire game. This is the bread and butter for a Sona player: No matter how good. This is a lot, even when 5% feels kinda meh. Be ready to spam your abilities. 7-10/10

Stormraiders Surge: Dealing 30% of enemies max hp in less than 2,5 sec, gives you 40% bonus movespeed and 75% slow resistance. You cant use this effectively, and if you could: You dont need speed -> You need damage. 2-3/10

Thunderlords Decree: 10dmg per level and ok AP scaling. You need this one to oneshot bruisers/enemies with MR.
It got a really bad synergy with sona, because her aa q aa combo is hard to do on a safe distance. With your ult and then q aa you will proc this and do some insane damage. 9/10

Most matchups you will focus on your Q and R. In some matchups W is equally as useful as Q. However your E is bad. It is a free boot for a couple of seconds, and isnt that bad for either engaging or disengaging. Use this spell to get to lone faster. I click this spell about 3 times per sec when I roam, and almost never use it in lane as damage and heal is more important than movespeed in almost all situations.

Remember that the passives are the things that differ a normal and a godlike Sona along with positioning. Q passive for harass and to kill high priority targets. Try to use this if you are not familiar with Sona.

The W passive is used on high damage targets that you cannot burst down before they will kill your carries. I use this on all bruisers and some midlaners like Swain and Annivia that can still do damage without their instant burst.

The E passive is used when an enemy is getting away and you are not afraid of their damage or their tankiness. On level 11 and on you should be able to kite enemies pretty well with this passive.

Remember all Sona spells are delayed by 0.2 sec and you will often die because of this. Also every time you use a spell all spells goes on a 0.3 sec cooldown just so you cant spam them.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Standard AP support starting items. The mana regen got nerfed, but the extra AP does not make up for it. Coin is only good in winning lanes, and is therefore completely useless.
Get this item on your first back. The passive makes it worth it in high elo games, and the final item is godlike for low elo.

Core Items

15min back try to get theese items. Grail is needed for early teamfights, and is worth it as long as you are agressive and calculative.
Choose between the different boots: Sorcerer´s Shoes for low MR enemy teams, Ninja tabi for AD heavy enemy teams and Mercury´s Treads for CC and/or AP heavy enemy teams. Mobility boots for enemies snowballed out of control, and lucidity boots when you know you will not get 45% cdr otherwise. The 2 I usually go are Merc, and Sorcerer´s.
35 min, try to get as many of theese items.
At the 35 minute mark you need to choose if you want raw HP or AP and a shield. If I am with positive k/d, I choose raw AP instead of AP and HP. Get one of theese items after Lichbane.
Final items for 50minute-games. While theese items are godlike on Sona, they are way too slow for regular games. An elixir on top of boots is often more worth it than saving up for theese. Ive yet to see a 60minute-game in Diamond, but in lower elo: They are a godsend to end games with: R Q AA combo that will oneshot almost all targets.

Situational Items

Items for when nowball is out of control. Swap out Grail with Morello, instead of sightstone, get Frostqueen. Protobelt if your adc cannot waveclear. Get dark seal early and then upgrade to Mejai once you get approx. 8 stacks, depending on your cdr. Always have 30% cdr at min 20, no matter how agressive you go.
-IMPORTANT NOTE-
Remember to always get at least 35% cdr lategame, any less will kill you no matter how much AP or health you have.

Frostfang is a must-buy item, and sightstone is sadly very important as well. The higher elo you have the more important vision is. I do not reccomend not buying sighstone, but in low elo you do you.

Lichbane doubles your damage output, try to proc it 3 times in a teamfight, preferably on a high priority target. Without this, you are a basic support, and that is no fun. A Sona without a Lichbane is a Soraka with damage. You are supposed to be a mix between Ahri and Nami, with a hugekill-potential lategame versus any opponent except the full MR tank they will probably get.

Redemption was very strong in earlygame before, but I do not love the item anymore when they basically made it an endgame item for 2k gold.

Rylais also got nerfed and is at the moment worse than Liandrays.

Rabbadon got a good AP boost, but only take it as the 6th item, as the passive (bonus AP) only really shines in the real lategame. You can kill ANY opponent with your ult up with full build. Just don´t 1v2 or 1v3 like your inner Gosu tells you to.

While I do not want to talk about every item in this guide: Remember having 500ap and 2000hp at level 18 is the bare minimum. Go harder in AP rather than in hp, because AP=HP since your heal got a low cooldown. I have had several games where I have healed up 1 teammember and done a 2v5 and won.

VS

Alistar

Medium

The matchup is all about poke vs sustain. As long as you do not all-in him early, and try to wait for your (insane) powerspike at level 6 and go for the ADC instead of this cow, you will be set for the rest of the game. He will try to F W you if you go too close to the turret, but that is easy to dogde if you know his ranges.

VS

Annie

Easy

You are stronger with your team than she is with her team. Your damage is equal to a degree, but it is about who can R first. Since Annie R is instant and yours takes approx. 0.5 sec, she will combo you faster than you can combo her. Luckely your autoattacks are longer than her R range, and lategame she should be killed with 2-5 q aa combos.

VS

Bard

Easy

You are stronger at level 2 and just get stronger the entire game while he falls off.

VS

Brand

Easy

This support may be strong, but his high mana costs and low regen will make any bad Brand players get naturally forced out of lane. Be on the agressive, but never directly in front of him as his E Q combo can be as low as 0,1 sec. His R is also a monster if you are close to ANYTHING. But look on your map, turn your scripts all the way up to max and enjoy the freelo this matchup is.

VS

Braum

Medium

A bad braum will be the easiest lane you have ever seen as his Q only deals about 20% of your hp, and is essentially all his damage. However, a good Braum with a good adc (kogmaw, lucian) that have synergy will actually be the strongest botlane by far. His E will break all your spells, but your R will still stun him (But only him)

VS

Caitlyn

Hard

This is the ADC I always ban. Even though I play even with her throughout my games, my ADCs just die to them as monkeys (and here I thought I was high elo). Her crits are as strong as your combo, and her combo will take away 60% of your hp early and 90% after level 6. Do not run away from her once she started her combo. Sidestep and engage as she is completely defenceless now. Your ADC will probably just suicide to her a lot, and to counter that you should just tell him to play safe first 10 min and then all-inn all the time. Make sure to ward as she benefits a lot from ganks. Ward the bush as her traps are usually in them.

VS

Camille

Easy

Camille support was viable, but is in this meta she is essentially useless. Poke her down from a safe distance, as she is basically an alistar without healing.

VS

Corki

Medium

His damage output is high, and his range is high. Most botlanes have forgot to play versus him. Imagine him as a Lucian with ezreal Q at level 6. While his package may be scary when he is snowballing, normally he is quite in a bad shape and can be killed 1v1 as long as he doesnt juke your ultimate.

VS

Draven

Medium

His Q is as strong as your combo, but Dravens needs to pick up their axes. Remember that they usually end up either feeding or getting fed. I would prefer blitz/tresh instead of sona to easily win the lane. Just ult him lategame to win.

VS

Ezreal

Medium

This is a win or die lane, just like a Draven lane. Ezreal can spam Q and poke you to death if he got an early lead. If not: Dogde his Q by standing behind minions, and when his Q is on cooldown come in to Q him back.

VS

Galio

Easy

Galio support is basically a bad alistar that is extra tanky. Play aggressive, but keep a distance.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Gangplank support, gangplank adc: No matter what, easy money! Ward bushes and outsustain by killing the other botlane, as his w is better than yours: But yours heals 2 people, and is therefore better in teamfights and by doubletrades.

VS

Graves

Easy

Stay away from walls. He is basically a slow vayne with tons of burst.

VS

Janna

Easy

A good janna will always shield the right person. Trick her to never know who to shield, and thereby gain health advantage before teamfights. Care for her Flash R combo, as it will push you away from a safe position, into either the turret or an enemy gank. Use Ignite on enemy adc as you start the 2v2, as her ultimate will be essentially useless.

VS

Jhin

Easy

His autos may be slow, but AA Q W is a scary combo, as it will deal a ton of damage at any level. As he got 0 escapes, try to bait out his flash.

VS

Jinx

Medium

Fishbones will basically outtrade you at any level, but with good placement: (Try to stay close to minions, but not into them) You can basically win most trades as her teamfights are slow before lategame. The shorter the trade, the better for you.

VS

Kalista

Medium

A good kalista will force you out of lane with Q AA AA AA AA AA AA E. However: Wait untill level 5 to do risky trades, and with a good synergy with your adc: You can kill her before you kite her.

VS

Karma

Medium

Her early game is godlike. Honestly, playing her with this build is insane. Even though she is a beast at level 1-4, she falls off lategame unless she snowballs. Be careful of her, but do not hesitate to collapse on her if necesary.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Kennen adc is quite strong this meta. Force him to use his poke on the adc, and do good trades in the backline. Your R can stop his, but remember to be vary of combos, as kennen R is strong for AoE spells.

VS

Kog'Maw

Easy

There is a reason why this is out of the meta. His damage is bad, you win almost all trades unless he got Lulu as support.

VS

Leona

Hard

Even if you are a god at sidestepping her E: Her Flash Q combo, and good R placement will force you to build sightstone early. Trade her down to 40% hp at level 1, and then get health items on first back. After that you will eventually outscale her if she does not engage.

VS

Lucian

Medium

Boring adcs unite! Lucian is a wierd champion. While his agressive combo can deal 60% hp, he is still not considered a treath unless he got Botrk or you got a retarded adc.

VS

Lux

Easy

Bait out her Q and outsustain her bad trades.

VS

Malphite

Easy

He builds armor while you build AP. You can kill him at level 3 with good trades.

VS

Malzahar

Easy

While his high elo play got butchered, he is now a bad zyra. Zyra doesnt see much play either, and his kit is essentially worthless unless he gets babysit by the jungler.

VS

Maokai

Easy

STAY AWAY FROM THE BUSH!

Maokai support builds the same as you, with a lot of burst AP damage and decent sustain. Ward the bushes and do good trades. Making Maokai kill your caster minions by baiting his E into your minionwave: Will create a perfect freeze. Winning the lane early means winning the game early. Losing the lane isnt the end of the world, as his damage falls off lategame.

VS

Miss Fortune

Easy

Stay away from Low HP minions as they will kill you. Her kit got nerfed to nonexistance when her Q damage went away.

VS

Mordekaiser

Easy

Q him down as he is meele and you are ranged. Your W almost negates his R completely, and he is therefore almost never picked versus a Sona lane.

VS

Morgana

Easy

Dogde her Q to win the lane. Bait out her Q and punish her severely, as her E is a high cooldown spell.

VS

Nami

Medium

Her damage is insane on level 1-3, but falls off unless her ADC is strong. Ive lost count of how many Namis that negated my ignite, and therefore got away with 10HP under their turret.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

His Q hitbox is retarded, but so are the Nautilus mains. Kill his ADC while he is CC´ing yours.

VS

Poppy

Easy

Her damage is mediocre when close to a wall, but nonexistent when in lane. Bully her like she is a vayne main.
