Summoner Spells Back to Top

99.9% of games you're going to be taking 3.png. It negates a ton of damage in trades during lane but more importantly it saves your carries if an assassin like 121.png or a 11.png decies to hop on your ADC's ass.

Flash is a given, you can flash sonaq.png + sonapassive.png for surprise damage in lane, and flash sonar.png for lategame engages.

Masteries Back to Top

These masteries are pretty standard with the exception of 6343.png Dangerous Game. Typically supports take 6342.pngBandit for the extra gold, but as Sona in the mid to late game you run out of mana very fast and in teamfights, that extra mana you get from Dangerous Game is much more valuable than the ~100-200 gold you'd get from Bandit.

6363.png Windspeakers blessing should be obvious but if it's not, Sona has an AOE shield, so she applies windspeakers to 5 champions at once where most other supports have a single target heal.

Going sonaq.pngsonaw.png - sonaq.png - sonae.png is pretty standard for Sona because it gives you a powerspike at level 3 over other supports, however, I FIRMLY believe that having an extra point in Q and W is more valuable than having 1 point in E during lane, and for this reason, I don't take E until level 7 at the earliest. Sometimes I'll hold off on getting E until level 10, but no later.

In almost all circumstances, your powerchord will be more advantageous to do more damage with Q than to slow with E, and in almost all circumstances a slightly stronger heal/shield will be more effective at saving your adc's life from a safe distance because the heal is long range, and the E is only effective within the aura.

In lane you're going to want to get your powerchord on your Q, so when you have 2 stacks of your passive, look to Q + Auto rather than just Q'ing. As said earlier, you can get some surprise kills with a flash Q+powerchord because the early game burst is very strong. After you Q the enemies, get your ADC within the aura to give them the autoattack boost. If they auto the enemy laners on their next attack it will have a pretty significant damage boost.

Your W costs a lot of mana, but it's your most effective skill and what makes Sona so good. Its range is pretty long, and it automatically targets the teammate with the lowest percentage HP. All allies within the aura get a shield. In combination with 6363.png and 3504.png Sona turns into a mega-buffer, more on that later.
Your E is really good for chasing and escaping, but as I said earlier, it's not very good in lane because of its short range and its scaling with levels. Your mana can be better spent elsewhere in lane. However, out of lane in the mid and lategame, when you have a solid chunk of AP and more points into E, when your team is grouped up her E is basically a mini Sivir ult, granting great chasing and escaping capabilities. When you activate your powerchord with E, your next basic attack will slow the enemy, this is great for letting your teammates catch up and secure the kills.

Your ult is pretty standard. It's an AOE stun. Use it wisely, it can change the fate of games. If your carries are getting dove, ult to save them, or if youve baited the enemy team into a choke point you can get a 4 or 5 man ult to straight up win the game.

Core Items

ARDENT CENSER IS WHAT MAKES SONA GOOD

Situational Items

    Good lategame purchase

Starting item: Spellthiefs -> Frostfang -> Eye of the Watchers. Use Q to poke and get gold to add to the quest, at 650 gold, your Q's and Autos (with a frostfang charge) will give you a nice movespeed bonus for a second. This can be used to both personally escape from sticky situations or to chase.

Redemption/Locket are core on all supports. Redemption heals in a giant AOE with enormous range and can be used while dead. Use this to turn teamfights in the heat of battle. Locket is a shield that shields nearby allies, also use this in a teamfight. Generally when a teamfight occurs, you're going to want to pop both of these on your teammates to keep them healthy.

Now... For what makes Sona the hands down best support for mid and lategame. 3504.png3504.png3504.png3504.png3504.png
Lets list the stats. It gives mana regen, AP, CDR which are all very effective on Sona. On top of that it gives 10% bonus healing and shielding power and 8% movespeed. Both of which are very nice to have on Sona. But most importantly, allies you heal or shield gain 20-35% attack speed and lifesteal 20-35 damage on hit whenever they're healed or shielded for 6 seconds.

Think about this. Lulu may build ardent censer and she has 1 shield. Nami may build ardent censer and she has 1 to 2 heals in a teamfight. When grouped up, Sona unconditionally gives 5 shields on a 5 second cooldown. This item alone gives your team ~30% more damage to towers from the attack speed bonus, makes doing baron or dragon very fast due to the combination of attackspeed + on-hit lifesteal, and gives your team a huge buff during teamfights.
Ardent censer is the reason I take Dangerous Game over Bandit. Having the extra mana to give your team shields not only saves their lives, but makes them do more damage and take objectives faster.

With the mana regen from 3107.png + 3504.png + 6332.png, you gain enough mana to consistently use W if you're at 0 mana which is just perfect to continuously buff your team with shields and ardent censer passive.

Standard build order is 2301.png - 3504.png - 3107.png - 3190.png. Generally I rush Eye of the Equinox because of its gold efficiency and the extra wards, but almost always I build Ardent Censer next. The only situation where I wouldn't would be if I had a Tank top, AP midlaner and a Tank Jungle where having them do extra damage on autos isnt very helpful, and you don't need the extra pushing power until later in the game. I'd go 2301.png-3107.png-3190.png-3504.png instead.

Matchups Back to Top

Generally, Sona's very early game is relatively weak but she ramps up very quickly. In lane, she goes even with other healers due to her poke being counteracted, and vs cc heavy tanks like leona or blitz, it's a skill matchup. If you can avoid their engages you can snowball the lane HARD in your favor, but on the other hand, if you get engaged on you're very squishy and it can make the game difficult. But if you can manage to get to midgame you'll be more powerful than most other supports just based on ardent censer synergy alone.

Personal Stats Back to Top

I'm a D4 Support Main who's happened to stumble upon the broken-ness of Ardent Censer on Sona and decided I'd share the secrets. I currently have a 73% winrate over 42 games and I'm currently ranked #43 Sona on Lolking.
