Summoner Spells Back to Top

14.png Do Not Take Ignite. You are a support. Your job is not to get kills. Your job is to keep your brain-dead adc Tristana alive as she level one rocket jumps in an attempt to tower dive and get an early kill and ends up being behind the rest of the game, and only manages to become relevant late game because of your heals, and brag about carrying at the end, despite your 60k in healing done.

6.png No.

12.pngOh yeah, so you can get back to turret faster and get poked for half your health or all-in'd because you thought it was a good idea to beat your carry back to turret. I'm sure it'll go well.

1.png Won't be necessary. Exhaust has too many tactical advantages both offensively and defensively for this to be viable. Besides that, you build 3222.png, so you don't really need it. If you do, take it for flash instead of exhaust. Either way, very situational and a gamble to take.

11.png What is wrong with you?

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

Cunning Tree:

Wanderer: Out of combat movement speed. This is extremely useful because the health cost from your heals does not trigger combat. This can enable you to skirt the outside of a teamfight and throw heals, it'll give you a bit more survivability. Savagry is useless on a support, as you shouldn't be killing minions early enough for five damage to make a difference. If you are killing minions as a support, you better be holding or taking a turret.

Secret Stash: Early game survivability if you decide to start out with health pots. Runic affinity isn't useful as you probably wont ever be running around with a buff. And assassin? If you're out on your own as a Soraka, just uninstall the game.

Meditation: Important early game sustain. And with 3222.png this equates to health regen as well.
Merciless is useless on you. You do not deal damage, and you shouldn't be truly trying. If they are below 40% health, let your adc kill them.

Bandit: Important on a support. This and your gold item are your only income. Dangerous game could be viable, as healing an ally when they get a kill gives you an assist, and it'll give you some health back to heal with. However, the health cost is five percent, so you'd only be getting one heals worth back per kill, so bandit is better. Greenfather's gift could enable you to poke from bush with your Q and deal alot more damage, but bandit is more important, as this will fall off hard mid to late game.

Intelligence: Cool down reduction is Soraka's best friend, especially now that her heal has a 8 second cooldown at level 1. Magic penetration is not necessary or advised on Soraka.

Windspeakers Blessing: There is no other keystone in the game that comes even close to being as good as this on Soraka. No real explanation needed.

Resolve Tree:
Recovery: Important health regen. It does wonders for your early and late game sustain. Alongside your Q and regen quint, it'll help you get back any health you used to heal in the laning phase. Also, remember that health regen applies in full in combat unless you are hit with grevious wounds. It'll curb the damage done by poke and keep you alive a little longer in a team fight.

Toughness: Curbing a little damage off of minion and enemy autos does a good job of early game survivability. Most ADC's do not have over 90 base AD until very late game, so until they back for their first damage item this is the equivalent to more then 5% damage reduction on their auto attacks.
Siegemaster could be taken if you know you'll be pushed under your own turret. The enhanced movement speed in bush in river isn't rather useful, as you shouldn't be roaming as Soraka. You don't have the hard cc or raw damage to make a roam successful, and will just end up hurting your adc.

Runic Armor: Your Q applies healing to yourself, and this makes that 8% stronger, not to mention your ult. More lane sustain. The end result is better then the +50 health from veterans scars.

Perseverance: See Recovery. Same concept, except even more effective. This will allow you to stay in lane after getting poked or healing yourself down to low health, and again, this works in combat, it will keep you alive. Fearless is also viable, as when the enemy team focuses you, they will find you even harder to kill then the build i'm describing will make you by default. However, i feel perseverance is better. Both outclass insight in terms of usefulness.

NOTE: ONLY MAX Q IF YOU KNOW YOU CAN LAND IT.

If you are brand new to Soraka, max your W.

Your Q is your main form of CC, lane sustain, and healing for your adc at lower levels. Let me explain.

sorakaq.png slows your enemy by 30%, making it your most reliable form of crowd control, as sorakae.png requires them to remain in the circle until the end of the duration to proc the root.
sorakaq.png gains an additional 40 damage per level, with a level 1 damage of 70, and a max level damage of 230. This HURTS if landed repeatedly. It is your only form of harass, and with a short cooldown and low mana cost, there is no reason not to abuse it.
sorakaq.png heals you for 14-22 health a second for four seconds. With a five second cooldown, you can continuously heal yourself with just a little cdr. Windspeakers and your healing items boost this effect. This healing is also applied to allies if you heal them while it is active on you, making your heal far more effective early if you use it right after landing this spell. 14 x 4 = 56 health. Plus 10% from windspeakers blessing. 56 health for your and/or your carry every five seconds if you land your Q.

All that being said, there is a reason I advise those new to Soraka not to max Q first. It can be tricky to land, as it does have a hang time, and can be easily dodged if your enemy outranges you. That being said, if you can hit this consistently, you can start 3301.png and 1004.png instead of 3301.png and 2003.png, and have nearly infinite sustain with your combined health and mana regen. It'll let you get an earlier 3096.png, which will jump start your gold income significantly.

Max sorakaw.png second as it is indeed your bread and butter. With its high early game cooldowns, upgrading this along with getting your heal and cdr items, will let you keep your allies alive to a great extent. Of course, take sorakar.png when you can. Your sorakae.png is maxed last. It deals the same damage as sorakaq.png with three times the cooldown, and twice the mana cost level one, and still more mana cost at level one then your Q needs at max level. Leveling it up increases the root duration, but with it being so hard to proc consistently, it isn't worth it. It's silence is its best feature (Haha, no ult for you 23.png), and it is just as effective at level 1 as max level.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Only for decent Soraka's maxing Q. If you are maxing W first, this will get you killed.
New Soraka's take this and max your W until you learn to land your Q consistently.

Core Items

First back, when you can. Back with your adc if you can help it. Most back between the five and seven minute mark.
Sighstoon as soon as possible. You are a support, and with Soraka being immobile, and early warning of a gank or objective assault is crucial. Ninja Tabi will make you very tanky early on against the enemy ADC, who will focus you if he's smart. Unless he bought a grievous wounds item like mortal reminder.
First Full Item. Magic Resist and a CC cleanse. Extremely important. It gives the largest heal boost at 20%, meaning you'll have 30% healing boost very early with windspeakers blessing. It also converts your mana regen into health regen, which works wonders for sustain. the 10% cdr is also important. One of the best and most often ignored items on soraka.
Second Item. Along with Mik's, very cheap. The raw health this gives you combined with your tank runes, masteries, magic resist from Mik's and armor from ninja tabi, is going to make you decently tanky for a mage support. You'll survive longer. This brings you to 40% heal boos, which essentially negates the effects of grevious wounds, which decreases healing recieved by 40%. This is also why you rush Miks. Rushing redemption into ardent censor wouldn't get it up quick enough, and if the enemy adc built mortal reminder, you'll be playing serious catch up. The active on this is boosted by your healing boosters (another reason for Mik's first), and is amazing in team fights.
Ardent Censor puts you at 50% heal boost. So even if grevious wounds is being procc'd, you're still doing your base heal plus 10%. It gives anyone you heal bonus damage, yourself some movement speed and AP to make your heals more effective, and that sweet cdr that Soraka loves so dearly. Eye gets you to 45% cdr and is only 200 gold. For this reason its more useful then Talisman of Ascension.
Full Build. Death cap to finish it off. Full build and not accounting for grievous wounds, I've healed my teammates for over 500 health once per second, nevermind Redemption active or my ult. The meatyness of the build allows you to live much longer, you don't pop like a balloon when jumped on (though thinking yourself a tank is a fatal mistake), and your heals are absolutely broken.

Situational Items

Merc Treads if the enemy is mostly AP or have a great deal of cc. Boots of swiftness are viable, and are cheaper, which allows you to get started on Mik's sooner. I prefer Ninja Tabi in most Situations though.

VS

Alistar

Medium

His Combo is nasty but a sorakae.png at your feet will stop the knockup and allow you to back off. He'll also have to move outside it to activate alistare.png. Poke him down.

VS

Annie

Easy

You outrange her, abuse her. Just keep your sorakae.png ready if she goes to engage, and back away once she hits level six, as its absolutely disgustingly easy for her to 4.png infernalguardian.png double kill.  Mikeals will save your carry from the stun.

VS

Bard

Easy

Sidestep bardq.png and poke. Caution: He does a deceptive amount of damage and slow. Shouldn't pose many real issues.

VS

Blitzcrank

Medium

Poke through minions as best you can. If you get hooked you're dead. If you sidestep the hook, continue to Harass

VS

Brand

Hard

Hide behind your turret. No i'm serious. Do not bother trying to harass this infuriating piece of [Redacted]. His stun is deceptively hard to dodge and he does so much damage. Zyra's damage can atleast be dodged for the most part, but alot of brands AoE encompasses the vast majority of the lane. Just wait for late game.

VS

Karma

Medium

You can poke through minions better then she can. She does alot more damage and her CC is harder through, watch out. Your heals outpower her shields late, but not early. Keep back and safe until level four or so, then work your harass from there. She has one of, if not the, most powerful level 1 and 2's of any champ in league of legends, thanks to her karmamantra.png. One empowered karmaq.png could chunk you for over a third of your health. Not a good way to start the laning phase.

VS

Lux

Hard

As with most hard-poke mage supports, Soraka fairs poorly against lux. Be very careful not to get  luxlightbinding.png trying to land your sorakaq.png, and luxlightstrikekugel.png hurts. You can potentially out harass her when there are minions in the way, unless she is stealing farm from her ADC, which in that case you're probably going to win anyway when their ADC has 30 farm at 10 minutes. Careful of luxmalicecannon.png, its cooldown is extremely low.

VS

Malphite

Easy

Poke him into oblivion. If he ults, sorakae.pngsorakaq.png at your feet and run.

VS

Morgana

Medium

Caution: sorakae.png will not stop darkbindingmissile.png after it has been fired.

She deals alot of damage, just try to bait tormentedsoil.png when trying to land your sorakaq.png, and take advantage of the fact that  tormentedsoil.png has twice the cooldown of sorakaq.png. If you dodge her poke, you'll by far outsustain early. Just be wary of her damage both early and late game. Even if she uses blackshield.png to stop the damage of sorakaq.png, you still get the health off it. blackshield.png also has a very lengthy cooldown, and if she uses it on a Q, try to communicate with your jungler, as this makes a gank much easier.

VS

Nami

Medium

Bait her namiq.png before trying to land your sorakaq.png. If you're not careful, you'll find yourself rooted in a bubble. Take advantage of her longer cooldowns. Be wary of her adc when empowered by namie.png as the combined slow and bonus damage will shred you. Wait for the adc to waste the buff on minions before poking again.

VS

Orianna

Medium

A good Orianna makes her carry very hard to kill, and deals alot of poke. Her early sustain is rather low, abuse the mana cost of her abilities. Keep an eye on the ball, and do your best to sidestep.

VS

Sona

Hard

stop her sonaq.png with your sorakae.png when you can, just keep in mind sonaq.png has a much lower cooldown. sorakaq.png her when she goes in to sonaq.png as well, as it's range is short. You'll be hit with the poke, but it will help negate some of the damage. Her damage will make your life miserable, so your best bet is to force her to use some of her mana on sonaw.png and sonae.png to avoid your sorakaq.png early game. You out-sustain her, and your heals are far stronger and just as spammable end game with this build. Don't get caught by a 4.png sonar.png engage. Don't be afraid to stand behind turret and get passive gold and XP if the laning phase goes poorly.

VS

Taric

Easy

Harass and sidestep his tarice.pngtaricq.png is pathetic, don't let it bother you. Just poke from safety. Your slow will severely harm their engage, and a well time silence will stop an engage in its tracks.

VS

Thresh

Medium

Similar to Blitz, but has more ranged Autos, and his hook has a longer duration. He can ruin your day and kill you very quickly if you get caught, but you should be able to outpoke him. Remember, his autos are ranged and will travel a good distance.

VS

Zilean

Medium

Dodge zileanq.png to the best you can. If he timewarp.png onto you, then sorakae.png to try and stop or atleast delay his zileanq.pngzileanw.pngzileanq.png combo. His ult revives the person he casts it on. Whether or not you are able to outpoke him depends on his skill and yours. You hit more often and get health back, he hits harder and wider.

Do not. DO NOT. Walk towards your adc, or your allied minions, with a zileanq.png on your head. Just, think and pay attention.

VS

Zyra

Hard

Use sorakae.png on Zyra when you go in to step on her seeds to break them. The poke from a Zyra is disgusting, and standing behind minions wont help you. Just wait for late game, and be extra cautious. There isn't enough MR in the world early game for a Zyra. 3111.png are probably a good idea.

The Unfortunate Truth Back to Top

Soraka is a heartbreaking champion to play sometimes. Your heals can keep people alive, but it can't stop stupid. If they run from you, overextend, can't group, can't siege objectives, can't word, can't communicate, or are just inherently bad, your heals will just delay the inevitable. I've seen 60k healing done on a loss. You are a power house for certain, you just can't directly hard carry. Soraka is made to keep that one player on your team who isn't feeding alive long enough to get a pentakill and carry the game. Keep this in mind when you play her. You may not see an amazing kda ratio, you might not get towers, farm, or kills. Your work is in the background, and often goes unthanked and unnoticed. The Riven that just got a tower dive pentakill will brag about how good she is, even though you popped redemption, ult, miks, and healed her health bar up from 20% to full three dozen times.
