Summoner Spells Back to Top

Exhaust/Flash and Ignite/Flash are the two basic spell sets used for most supports. Ignite is good with synergy for kills, and exhaust is good to keep yourself and your carry alive.

Masteries Back to Top

Windspeaker's Blessing is the best overall mastery for Taric, because your heal is AOE and can go off of not only you, but a teammate it allows for you to keep the bonus resistances on your team consistently when partnered with auto-attacks from your passive to lower the heals cooldown. Taric also has a very weak heal overall compared to his old one so it helps increase its worth as well as give you a massive sheild for his W.

His W is his most important part of his kit. It also costs a good amount of mana early on and isn't something you should use lightly. You can't do much at level one, so the passive armor from his W helps keep your carry in better health and can be used to give him a good size shield if needed.

Taric's new Q (heal) is extremely good. You can now sustain like the old Taric used to in lane, and you can charge it back up and use it very quickly. Using your abilities to keep maxing your Q stacks is important to maximize your healing and help sustain during trades in lane.

Tarics stun can now have a lower overall cooldown then previously, however the stun time stays the same. I usually get 3 ranks into it then max my shield to keep up my utility efficiency.

Your W is a very large sheild however it has a long cooldown and isn't cost effective. Try to move it to players who can engage or onto your carry so you can use your sustaining abilities off of them to keep them alive.

Tarics ult is very tricky and its easy to use it too early or too late, it takes a lot of time to master when to use it at the ideal time for a fight. His ult can easily turn a fight and save a losing match.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

If possible try to back around 1300g so you can get a Sightstone and upgrade your Relic Shield, if its not possible upgrade your Relic Shield and back later for a sightstone and pink.
Faerie Charms are great if you back and you have enough for your Targon upgrade, but not enough to finish your Sightstone or get your Ruby crystal. Taric is super mana hungry and they build into a lot of essential items.

Core Items

If the enemy team has a lot of magic or CC these boots are preferred.
Best overall boots for Taric, they scale the best with him and you can get CDR from other items.
If you're focusing on pure tank! These items are the most important items for you to get. Depending on the situation you might want to go locket first, otherwise rush the redemption. The Ruby Sightstone is essential to these items because it lowers the cooldown of them. Redemption also scales with windspeakers which helps boost Redemptions heal, as well as the lockets sheild. Timing these items appropriately with your ult can ensure your squishies live through a bursty team.
If you want to heal! These three items will give you a great start if you want to really buff your team and increase your healing capability and overall utility. Ardent is HUGE for Taric since he can keep it applied longer and more often on more people than anyone. (Sona has a longer heal CD and less overall area of effectiveness to apply her sheild/heal)_

Situational Items

If your team needs help gaining an advantage in a sidelane and the enemy team has a lot of magic wave clear these items can help carry your team to some objectives and set up advantages.
If the enemy team has a lot of magic damage this item is perfect to help boost your self healing as well as provide good resistance.
Its overall efficiency is low due to your longer ult CD, but it can be impactful during team fights.
This item can greatly enhance your healing and is best if you're just completely ahead and they don't have too much of a damage threat, it really increases your heal and helps you have mana with a little bit of MR
Thornmail is always good to help survive against heavy AD teams, and the extra armor and damage can sometimes provide more than Frozen Heart (FH) FH: Due to the newer items that have come out, FH is no longer an essential item. However to max your CDR or to give you armor/mana to allow you to cast more spells its still a great item. Its also vital against teams with carries who maximize from attack speed.
If you're going for huge utility this item is a great addition to add to your arsenal. It gives you the armor and health that helps if you go for locket and helps protect your carry.
If the enemy team has a lot of CC and you need to help out your carries as well as keep them alive long enough for you to be able to get them in your ult this item is great. Its also a huge bonus to your healing which also makes an even huger bonus to Redemption's heal.

Due to the recent changes in support items, Taric can focus on more utility items due to his natural tankiness. The amount of healing and shields that Taric can provide can make up for some of the other items that leave him slightly squishier early game. However late game Taric can still have a lot of defensive stats, usually i have 250-300+ armor and 150-175 magic resist late game.

Taric's Q change is huge, and he's very mana hungry so you want to chain your abilities right so you can keep maximizing your heals as well as not going OOM. You lose some tankiness if you go for healing and utility more so than defensive stats but you can provide a metric ton of healing. You have the potential to heal for 2500 with a 5 charge Q to your entire team if you do it right. Think about how much you want to heal and how much mana you'll end up using.

Build for the situation:
Do you need to be more of the front line and need stats faster?

Do you need to provide healing/shields for your team to counter picks, or AOE damage?

Do you need to provide wave control to help set up for map pressure?

Easy for kog to poke you out when you attempt to get close to stun, or get relic procs.

VS

Leona

Easy

When she E's in, she'll end up behind you, so make sure you use your stun properly. If you use your stun correctly you have the possibility to get the carry if they go in to follow up.

VS

Lucian

Hard

Try to use your stun to make him use his dash, or use it after he dashes so you can land the stun. Due to his mobility it makes it hard to lock him down.

VS

Lulu

Lux

VS

Miss Fortune

Easy

Use your ult to stop her ults damage. Immobile and easy to stun/kill, watch the minion wave when you go to proc your relic shield to not get poked out by her double up.

VS

Morgana

Hard

Try to project your stun accordingly off of yourself and your carry to hit not only the morg but her carry as well so she can't shield the stun. Use your Stun/Ult to mitigate her snare/ult.

VS

Nami

Medium

Depending on the Namis ability to land Q's and your ability to dodge them this match up can be easy or hard. Nami is squishy so she can be killed easily, but she has a lot of tools to poke, sustain and CC.

VS

Nautilus

Medium

Stun him when he Q's in to hook you or your lane partner.

VS

Rengar

Easy

Ult to stop his one-shot ability when you see the !

Vel'Koz

Zilean

VS

Zyra

Hard

Zyra has a lot of poke, and its difficult to lane against aggressive mage supports. She'll be able to attempt to zone you and your carry as well as provide good damage, CC, and disengage/engage. If she stays up front go for a stun to lock down, you may have to flash stun in order to not have to worry about the pathing for your stun and dodging her root.

Early Game Back to Top

You can either start with your stun depending on the lane or you can start W and pjut your W on your lane partner to start. It doesn't yield much benefit to put it on your jungler. If your Jungler is starting on your side give him a few auto attacks and head to lane. The first level is the hardest to get through, Taric doesn't have the best laning phase and its harder to push an advantage if your carry doesn't go in with you.

Maximize your Q stacks, and don't just waste mana healing immediately or too often if it won't yield the best benefit. Think about your mana and how many charges you have, what pressure does the enemy lane have? Do you need the heal right now? You can W to mitigate some damage while you're getting charges if you're getting poked down. The more efficient you are the better it is for your carry as well as your mana.

Once you have your stun you can start to poke at them by stunning them and walking up to get in an auto or two to proc your passive on them. Try to be aware of not only your position but your carries as well, if they have an ability that helps them dive in you can always go for a stun off of them, or combo off of both you to stun them both and start a fight.

If you're going against an enemy champion like a Morgana or a Sivir, try to line up your stuns to hit both of the enemy laners so they're unable to completely stop your engage.

If your getting poked out badly you can execute minons to add to some sustain and try to keep your passive going so you can reset your cooldowns.

Ganks Back to Top

Friendly:
Pay attention to your jungler and be sure to switch your W on to them to help them get an engage off by using your stun off of them.

Prep your ult for tower dives and remember the timing for it to maximize the amount of time everyone is invulnerable during the dive.

Pay attention to the time it takes for your stun to go off, and save your flash for a quick last second stun to help start the engage if needed.

Enemy:
Use your bastion/heal to keep yourself and your carry alive.

Anticipate movements and guide your stun to where they will be, not where they are.

Keep wards in the river bushes I.E. tri bush and river bush.

Keep a lane bush ward as much as possible, if you're kept toward the middle, put one in their bush to catch lane ganks.

Team Fights Back to Top

If you have a heavy engage comp, keep your W on the main engager and get a stun off of them, play forward but pay attention to your carries. Quickly switch your W onto them if you need to help save them, and make sure to maneuver around your team to get your ult off on as many people as possible.

Try to save your ult for key abilities from your team or from the enemy team to deny as much as possible from them. You can hard counter a rengar ult, ori ult, kat ult and so much more if you time things appropriately and you can completely turn a fight.

Try to stay at a position where you're constantly getting the cooldown reduction from your passive. If their team is diving on your carries stay back by them and peel maximizing the amount of your passive you're getting. Always be in someones face, Taric is a tank and has the ability to keep himself alive as well as most of his team. Getting poked out a bit is okay, just play smart.

Maximize your healing when you can, use your other abilities to keep your stacks high instead of just using it at 2 stacks. The benefit gained is way better for the main tank or carry thats getting bursted out. Try to use your ult to maximize your healing as well, combine it with active items such as locket, mikaels or redemption to keep everybody up so they can get your ult, or so they can be healed to the max when your ult is over.

ACTIVE ITEMS:
Watch the enemy team and know when to use your abilities, your active use items can give your team an extra 1k+ hp to work with and allow them to get in to your ult.

Remember prep time, Redemption and your Ult take awhile to go off. Redemption will still heal your team when they are effected by your ult which can help reset the fight.

Zz'Rot Back to Top

If your team is falling behind and being out-rotated use the Zz'Rot and Banner of command to help put pressure on the map for your team. There have been games when i've single-handedly carried my team to victory by getting objectives and setting up a support split push. It can put a huge amount of pressure on the map and even stop the enemy team from getting objectives after they win a fight because they have to stop the push.
