Summoner Spells Back to Top

TP and flash every game no exceptions. Flash is just so strong in so many different scenarios, and teleport is the same: got ganked and need to get back to lane? TP; split pushing(which you'll be doing a lot on Trundle) and the enemy started baron? TP. Just make sure F is for flash ;).

New Runes Back to Top

Staple choices:

The combination of resolve and precision gives both attack speed and AD, both of which trundle needs throughout the game. Grasp is 100% the best choice for keystone, nothing else really synergises that well with trundle and this just makes the most sense for trading in lane. Demolish means you destroy towers even quicker than usual! Second wind is just OP compared to all the other choices in that tree. Triumph and bloodline are really good alongside all the healing trundle already has in his kit, the only real options here.

Optional:

Conditioning can be switched out for either iron skin or mirror shell if you're laning against someone who can bully you in lane(eg. renek or kennen). Second wind can be switched for overgrowth if you think you have a free lane and that the lane phase will last for a while(eg. maybe sion?) but really this is unlikely.

Run this rune page on Trundle every game and you'll be absolutely fine.

KING'S TRIBUTE(P)trundlepassive.png

Trundle's passive is actually deceptively strong. It gives a lot of sustain that people don't realise is there meaning that if you go even in a trade you actually win. The best thing about it is that you don't have to do anything apart from be near creeps(in lane) and you'll heal. In my opinion this is what makes Trundle's lane phase safer than other bruiser's like 24.png or 39.png who either don't have sustain or have built in lifesteal meaning they have to hit creeps making them more vulnerable.

CHOMP(Q)trundletrollsmash.png

Chomp is Trundle's primary damage spell, his bread and butter so it makes sense to max it first. Use it in lane on your opponent when your Grasp%20of%20the%20Undying.png?width=32 proc is up for a surprising chunk of damage. Never forget that this ability steals AD from your opponent so it's really useful against other AD based champions in trades.

FROZEN DOMAIN(W)trundledesecrate.png

To be honest this ability brings Trundle's kit together, it's fairly self-explanatory. It gives move speed, attack speed and increased healing synergising with lifesteal, Trundle's passive and his ultimate trundlepain.png. Careful with using this too often in lane to trade however as it uses a lot of mana and without it you are vulnerable.

PILLAR OF ICE(E)trundlecircle.png

This ability is fantastic at so many things, it sets up for easy ganks with the interrupt and the monster slow is provides. Late game it makes getting picks so easy, if a carry is mispositioned just pillar them and make them flash to escape. Like trundledesecrate.png though, watch how you use it in lane as you're vulnerable without it.

SUBJUGATE(R)trundlepain.png

This ability makes Trundle the champion that he is, it basically makes him impossible to 1v1 while this ability is active and Trundle is inside his domain. In a 1v1 just use it on your enemy, in a teamfight use it on the tankiest member, that will make them 100x easier to kill and make you 100x harder to kill. Just watch out in a 1v1 as most people will try and kite you while this is on and re-engage after it's ended, Trundle is much weaker without this ability so be sure you can finish off the enemy before continuing for the kill.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

I literally always start this, in my opinion doran's shield is OP in top lane.
These are good first back options, cull is good in matchups you cant really win; tiamat is good for pushing; vamp scepter is good for added sustain; hexdrinker against an AP top laner and jaurim's against any kind of flat true damage(darius or cho).

Core Items

Core items, unless the enemy team is full AD these should pretty much always be your first 3 items. Rush hydra and then go either visage against AP or iceborn against AD. You can get just the sheen component and then build into visage if you want to boost your damage more but they still have heavy AP.
Boot options: tabi against most comps unless they have a boatload of CC (think sej, maokai, tf, morg) in which case merc's would be better.

Situational Items

These are really offensive options, and I would usually only ever get 1 of these, and it's almost always sterak's. The increased base AD is so good on Trundle's Q and for boosting the sheen effect. Try the other's out though and see how they work for you.
Defensive options, dead man's is really good on Trundle to reduce the ability to kite him and give him a slight boost in damage; randuin's and/or thornmail against a fed ADC; adaptive helm against a heavy AP team or Zz'Rot if you are going full split push mode or just to help you slow push side waves.

VS

Akali

Medium

Akali is really annoying to play against due to her ability to wait out Trundle's trundlepain.png(R) and trundledesecrate.png(W) power with her shroudakalismokebomb.png. However she still shouldnt be able to kill you so just farm and dont let her roam to snowball.

VS

Camille

Easy

Camille only really has lane pressure against you pre-6, after that she can never 1v1 you as long as you aren't behind. She will look for roams to midlane so just ward so you know when she is trying it.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

One of the best matchups for Trundle, you steal an ungodly amount of HP from him with trundlepain.png(R) and you can just bully him out of lane and then make him squishy in teamfights.

VS

Darius

Medium

I've put it as medium as it can be difficult if played incorrectly. Darius is a champion that relies on healing from his dariuscleave.png(Q), dodge the outside of this and you're fine. Rush a jaurim's fist 3052.png and just look to fight him at level 6. Dont wait to use trundlepain.png(R) as he will burst you without it, use it right away.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Medium as you both look to 1v1 each other, you win early-mid game but once she gets about 3 items you really have no chance. Just try to force her to group as you are stronger in teamfights and you can peel her away from your backline nicely with trundlecircle.png(E).

VS

Gangplank

Medium

This matchup isn't hard because he can bully you, it's hard because you really cant prevent him from scaling into his godlike lategame. His barrels prevent you from ever getting onto him and he will just sit and farm and its tricky to stop him. You have to freeze the wave on him and force him to come into your side of the lane, and call for a gank to put him behind. If you get far enough ahead you can dive him easy.

VS

Gnar

Medium

Unlike most bruisers Gnar struggles to bully out Trundle due to Trundle's passive giving him sustain. It's tricky to ever kill him unless he misplays or you interrupt his gnare.png(E) with trundlecircle.png(E). Fight him when he's mega as you win that fight easy.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Illaio is pretty aids to play against to be honest, if she ever lands illaoie.png(E) on you you will get chunked however once you have tiamat3077.png you can fight back if she lands it and that reduces the time your spirit is there as well as clearing the wave. Careful for her illaoir.png(R) however as this can one shot you before you have time to trundlepain.png(R).

VS

Jax

Medium

You beat him easy in a 1v1 post-6 but then like other bruisers he outscales you, and he will look to kite out your trundlepain.png(R). Its fairly simple as long as you wait for his jaxcounterstrike.png(E) to end and then show him who's boss.

VS

Riven

Medium

You can 1v1 her fairly easily as long as you don't let her burst you with her rivenfengshuiengine.png(R) before you can heal. Try not to take long trades with her and don't let her roam to midlane for free kills.

VS

Sejuani

Easy

Although not a top laner, I thought it was mentioning that due to her passive giving her absurd amounts of resistances she is the best champion to trundlepain.png(R). Also as it takes away a flat amount of resistances from her once she takes damage, she actually goes into negative resistances after trundlepain.png(R), making her so squishy and you super tanky.

VS

Shen

Easy

Shen is strong at trading early due to his shenw.png(W) which negates all of Trundle's damage, however once you get some items you can dominate him. Try to save trundlecircle.png(E) to interrupt his shenr.png(R) and basically make Shen useless.

VS

Sion

Easy

Another really easy matchup, he's a tank that you can steal plenty of stats from and you can bully him out of lane easily. If he tries to sionq.png(Q) you just trundlecircle.png(E) on top of him which will interrupt his channel and also make him free to trade with.

VS

Teemo

Medium

He obviously outpokes you and it's really tricky to get onto him but if he misplays once you can capitalise and easily kill him. Just use everything on him and he is so squishy he will 100% die. Also if you rush hexdrinker 3155.png he doesn't have any kill pressure and it becomes even easier to 1v1 him.

VS

Urgot

Easy

Urgot doesn't have the damage to burst you down to low enough health for him to execute you with urgotr.png(R) through your trundlepain.png(R). He can't fight you at any point really and you can sustain through his poke. Also your trundlecircle.png(E) really messes him up as his urgote.png(E) cannot go through terrain.

VS

Yasuo

Hard

One of the hardest matchups i've come up against, he can just so easily kite you while your trundlepain.png(R) is on with his yasuodashwrapper.png(E) and then he will kill you once it's ended. As well as the fact that you steal almost no resistances from him and he outscales you really hard.

Lane Phase Back to Top

How to play the lane phase is completely matchup dependent in the top lane. However the beauty of a champion like Trundle is that he has a lot of different options on what to rush. Against AP? = 3155.png. Want to push? = 3077.png. Need more sustain? = 1053.png. You get the jist, make sure to build correctly including boots to counter your opponent and once you hit 6 Trundle should win most(not all) 1v1's.

Roaming Back to Top

Roaming is the main thing that a top laner can do to impact the game. Trundles ganks with 12.png aren't the best so it can be tricky to effect botlane however his ganks midlane can be really impactful due to trundlecircle.png and the slow from trundletrollsmash.png. If their midlaner is an immobile champion like 101.png or 61.png then your trundlecircle.png(E) combined with your midlaners CC or damage should mean a guaranteed 4.png at least.

Teamfights Back to Top

As already mentioned in teamfight's it's necessary to use trundlepain.png(R) on the tankiest member to gain the most resistances and make them squishy for you team. Beyond that you have to use your best judgement on whether to go for their backline or peel for you own as Trundle can do both. Usually if your backline is strong then you should just peel for them and make sure they survive. Whatever you decide to do make sure to use trundlecircle.png(E) for maximum disruption, this is probably Trundle's most potent spell in a teamfight beyond trundlepain.png(R) and should be use to disrupt the enemy backline or the enemy divers and protect your backline.
