Summoner Spells Back to Top

  1. 14.png4.pngA confident Twisted Fate player will run ignite and flash in the majority of the match ups. Ignite is great with Twisted Fate because it compensates his lack of early damage and compliments his ability to set up ganks. Meanwhile helping your jungler and yourself finish off a kill.
  2. 3.png4.pngSometimes Twisted Fate needs exhaust in aggressive and burst champion match ups. For example, I will never run ignite against a Zed or Yasuo because their lane condition relies heavily on blowing up the lane opponent with their high burst ultimates/trades.
  3.  1.png4.pngCleanse is also very situational. The only time I would run this is if the enemy team has very heavy cc across their whole team. But the real decision comes down to their jungler and mid laner's kit. If you are against a Xerath mid lane and a Sejuani jungle, then ignite probably isn't the right call considering any competent opponent will camp you just based on your ability to die in lane.

New Runes Back to Top

  1. Electrocute.png?width=32Electrocute is nice but, to enable electrocute you need a full combination of spells which will lead to heavy mana issues in lane so Arcane Comet allows you to poke without using nearly as much mana.
  2. The%20Ultimate%20Hat.png?width=32Twisted Fates ultimate is key to pressuring side lanes and being able to help your team if something happens. Considering his ultimate cool down is high, having extra cool down reduction really helps his ability to pressure the map.
  3. Looking over season 7, Twisted Fate received a movement speed buff which is crucial to his ability to chase down enemies in laning phase or when you are chasing in side lanes. Twisted Fate buys movement speed items which in turn gives him ability power which is a very good compliment to his kit. Keeping that in mind, Celerity.png?width=32Celerity is a optimal choice (rightfully so).
  4. Keeping in mind that extra movement speed is nice, Scorch.png?width=32Scorch provides you that extra damage in lane and in general that will help you poke an opponent out of lane.
  5. Perfect%20Timing.png?width=32Stopwatch is an all around good rune to take on any champion. The only interchangeable rune in my opinion would be Magical Footwear.
  6. Cosmic%20Insight.png?width=32Cosmic Insight is great on Twisted Fate because along with cool down reduction being needed for his abilities, having it on his items is very key because almost every game you will build Zhonya's Hourglass.

  1. wildcards.png Always max your Q ability first. Twisted Fates W ability has its benefits to maxing first. But until your Q ability is maxed, your W ability is only used to compliment your Q ability when trying to full spell combo an enemy with your stun card.
  2. pickacard.png W ability is what you should max after your Q ability. Increasing the Blue card damage/mana return, increasing the red card slow/damage, and increasing your stun cards damage/stun duration.
  3. cardmasterstack.png Twisted Fate's E ability increases his attack speed along with his damage per stacked deck auto attack. I wont say it is useless, in fact its quite useful but you reap more rewards in maximizing his other abilities prior to your E ability.
  4. destiny.png Without question, obviously level this ability whenever you can.
  5. twistedfatepassive.png Twisted Fate's Passive is as good as your ability to farm. Giving you extra randomized gold per minion you kill, this ability is crucial to hitting Twisted Fate's power spikes and allowing you to snowball. PRIORITIZE YOUR FARM.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Standard Start. Majority of your match ups will be this start.
Skill shot reliant lane opponent like Syndra.
This start was only really good when you could have 2 health potions and when a handful of opponents took deathfire touch in lane. The only damage over time champion that i could see this still being an option for is Cassiopeia

Core Items

WITH BOOTS START. I always upgrade my boots first back if my starting items are boots then I work on my Rod of Ages components (Crystal First). Then work towards Lich Bane, Zhonya's, Void, into Deathcap for that late game burst.
Against heavy AD compositions where I don't start boots, I will use my standard start and build my Rod of Ages first. Getting the Catalyst of Aeons is crucial to lane sustain in terms of mana and health. Once you finish Rod Of Ages you can upgrade your boots or work on your Lich Bane components.
Losing Vs AD lanes. Listen, we all lose lane sometimes. If this happens you need to sacrifice your Lich Bane path and after you Finish Rod of Ages you need to finish your boots and rush Zhonya's. Once you get those items you can then continue on your build path.
Losing Vs AP Lanes. Even if you are losing against a burst matchup that is ability power oriented. Rushing Zhonya's will still shut down their ability to one shot you. So if it were a syndra matchup and you started boots, finish your Mercurial Treads, get your Rod of Ages and finish work on your Hourglass.
BOOT DECISION. Mercurial Treads are great if you are against heavy crowd control and don't have a significant lead in lane. Even if you are ahead it is still good to build Mercurial Treads 9 times out of 10 against these heavy crowd control and ability powered compositions. Ninja Tabi are the same, if you dont have a huge lead against a full attack damage composition, these are still a viable pick the majority of the time. The only time I build Sorcerer's Shoes is if the enemy team has an intentionally feeding adc or a behind squishy mid laner that you can catch in the side lane to one shot. These boots only give flat penetration so they are only really good for squishy champs that are behind. Otherwise, the other 3 boots are the best choices

Situational Items

This isnt something that id recommend for winrate but it is a very fun build. Swap out your Hourglass for Rapid Firecannon. Replace your Void Staff with Ludens and you will be a very fast and scary siege Twisted Fate.

VS

Ahri

Medium

Respect her charm, this matchup becomes very hard if you cant control the minion waves and stay behind them so she cant get her free poke. I like the boots start in this matchup to avoid early Q poke.

VS

Akali

Hard

She is hard to trade with early considering she has great lane sustain and has a level 6 power spike. Do your best to blue card poke and clear the wave to pressure tower and deny farm prior to level 6.

VS

Anivia

Medium

She doesn't have much damage early, so try and poke with blue cards and pressure the lane before level 6. Once she hits level 6 she will constantly push your lane and look to chunk you and setup a dive.

VS

Annie

Hard

Farm this lane and dont be caught in lane after level 6 with half your hp or less. Out roam and pressure the map so she cant keep killing you in lane

VS

Aurelion Sol

Medium

Boots of Swiftness are a must to be able to stay out of range of Sols' abilities and aura. Keep farming and wait for jungle pressure to burst Sol down.

VS

Azir

Hard

Don't worry about poking in this lane, all you want to do is be able to keep up in farm and not get forced out of lane by Azir's poke. Spacing is very crucial to this matchup.

VS

Brand

Medium

Respect his burst and level 6 spike. Let him burn his abilities on the waves and zone him off farm.

VS

Corki

Medium

Try to avoid his poke and counter his wave clear. Once you get to mid game, trading is worth while with Lich Bane and Rod of Ages. Dont give him the opportunity to continue trades. Gold Card into WIld Cards and reset until your cooldowns are up

VS

Diana

Hard

This matchup becomes hard for Twisted Fate considering Diana has a strong combat spike at level 6 so it is essential you harass early on in lane and get your Catalyst so you can come back tanky and hopefully deny her farm from lane phase with your range and poke.

VS

Ekko

Medium

Wave clear and poke. Most Ekko players will walk into lane level one and Q the wave and repeat this over and over. Try to combo your Q wave clear and hit Ekko with it. You need to counter his wave pushing and punish him for going for farm while his Q is down.

VS

Fizz

Hard

Dopa doesn't have a problem in this lane. Well we arent Dopa. This is another skip Lich Bane for the time being and rush Hourglass matchup. Try to bait his playful trickster with holding your gold card and turning towards him pretending you are ganna throw it and look for trades. Respect his level 6 because he WILL tower dive you if you are chunked or behind.

VS

Galio

Medium

He is very easy to poke in lane and pressure off of farm. Since its hard to chunk him quickly, look for blue card trades and the occasional wild card if it will hit and help re control your wave.

VS

Gangplank

Hard

Push Push Push. Gangplank has great sustain and poke. Try to shove lane, deny farm and out roam him.

VS

Jayce

Hard

Avoid trades because he is a very lane dominant champion. Out farm and pressure the map.

VS

Karma

Medium

Out farm, poke and roam. Make her lane harass useless by impacting the map.

VS

Karthus

Medium

This is as hard as you make it to be. Dodge his q and poke him out of lane. Start boots and match his push

VS

Kassadin

Medium

Respect level 6 spike. Early game look for blue card poke while his q and magic shield is down.

VS

Katarina

Hard

Respect level 3 spike. Bait our her Q prior level 3 on you so she cant farm unless she walks up to auto and if she does then use your W to zone her and get free poke off. Be careful of level 6, like most matchups she gets a combat spike while you don't.

VS

Kayle

Medium

Poke early and trade. Kayle will run out of mana fast. Avoid level 6 dives. Kayle's ult makes it hard to kill her unless you get to late game and one rotation baits out her ult.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

Accept she is a lane bully, farm from a distance and just wait until late game to burst her down

VS

Lissandra

Hard

Don't ever get caught overextending in this lane, you are immobile and she can set up ganks a lot better then you can. Respect her ability to lock you down and allow ganks. farm and control you wave.

VS

Lux

Medium

Don't underestimate her. She isnt considered "meta" but if you aren't careful she will blow you up level 6. Avoid her E poke and counter her wave pushing.

VS

Malzahar

Hard

This is one of those lanes where you wont be killing him often. Counter his great ability to push and keep your farm higher than his. try to blow his spell shield with an auto or blue card if your jungler is looking to help.

VS

Morgana

Hard

Treat this like the Malzahar lane. Dont be anywhere other than your tower if you are in lane at level 6 without flash. She can flash ult you and 100-0 you no problem and negate your crowd control with her spell shield. Farm farm farm farm

VS

Orianna

Hard

Her shield negates most of your trade potential and will chunk you hard early. Wait for your power spike and counter her pushing. Be patient for jungle pressure.

VS

Ryze

Medium

Trade early, don't let him farm freely and make sure to pressure him on every farm he looks for.

VS

Swain

Hard

Dont trade, just shove and out farm.

VS

Syndra

Hard

Start boots, rush Hourglass after Rod of Ages and Mercurial Treads. Respect level 6, try and trade if you can manage to avoid her skill shots.

VS

Taliyah

Hard

Taliyah is like Twisted Fate's sister in terms of design. Except she is Twisted Fate V2. She doesn't have stuns so i'd take boots of swiftness so she cant chase you down with Q and take free trades. Ward lane to see if she roams and follow her. Farm and avoid her abilities.

VS

Talon

Hard

Poke level 1, avoid and bait out his Q so you can pressure early and deny farm. Rush Hourglass as well and respect level 6

VS

Veigar

Medium

Poke early and avoid his prism. Level 6 he can blow you up but look for a kill prior to level 6 so you can put him behind before he one shots you with his full rotation.

VS

Vel'Koz

Medium

All skill shots, avoid Vel's E and look for good trades. Vel is immobile and can be chunked very hard and can be at the cost of nothing. Vel's ult is as good as his ability to hit you with the rest of the kit. Look for trades and chunk Vel out of lane

VS

Viktor

Hard

He has great lane push ability and trades better than you. Match his farm and out pressure the map. Don't look for trades unless he doesn't have his cool downs up.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

He out sustains your trades, you need jungle pressure to win this lane prior to level 6. Otherwise, farm and out pressure the map.

VS

Xerath

Easy

Match his clear, dodge his skill shots and look for good poke. Keep your wave under control. If he wants to farm from a distance then just counter the push and roam.

VS

Yasuo

Hard

Personally this matchup is not bad for me. If you were looking at similar skill level players with the champions then it can be hard. Look for poke when windwall is down and avoid your minions because he will slide through to take quick and better trades. Bait his wall with your gold card and turning towards him and now hes open for ganks and trades.

VS

Zed

Hard

Rush Hourglass and Tabi. respect level 3 and level 6, trade with his shadow being down and hold your exhaust for his ultimate.

VS

Ziggs

Easy

Dodge his Q and you will be able to trade well after your first back and chunk him down until he is kill able.

VS

Zilean

Easy

Farm and roam. Hard to kill in lane and in general. Out pressure him and let him sit in lane while you snowball the game.

VS

Zoe

Medium

Trade in lane and stay behind your minions so she cant get a full combination off for free. If she can only get her Q on you then you will out trade her with your full combination.

Cycling Cards And Throwing Wilds. Back to Top

  • When pressuring your lane you need to cycle your gold card, walk up to the enemy to zone them off minions and make them think they are getting ganked and they will always be on the defensive. Dont lock your card immediately because the longer you can cycle the longer they will be zoned off of minions and trades.
  • Wild cards should NEVER be used just to farm. Always try to make sure you are lining up the farm and the enemy if you are looking to push and poke.
  • Mana consumption is a problem for twisted fate. Get your blue card out and salute your opponent or hit the minions. You cant always cycle your spells on the enemy because you will be forced out of lane because of your lack of mana.

How Twisted Fate Wins Games. Back to Top

  • Lane phase should generally be about farming and setting yourself out for a successful mid-late game splitting strategy.
  • Once you get mid lane tier 1 tower down start side laning to pressure their tier 1's. If bot lane gets the enemy tier 1 then swap with them and soak solo experience.
  • While rotating lanes and moving around the map in general, TAKE JUNGLE CAMPS. Do NOT listen to your junglers' pings. Im not saying take red buff from your ADC but im saying take the smaller camps because it helps utilize your passive the best and it is technically the most useful for you to take them because it is literally worth more gold for you to take them. This is ranked solo, this is about carrying all by yourself 9 times out of 10.
  • While split pushing keep pink wards in crucial catching points so that you don't get caught and give up objectives.
  • Use your ultimate to draw pressure in your side lane and if the champion matching your split push doesn't have teleport, ping your team for the opposing side lane towers or make a baron call. On top of this you can have them force a fight or force a catch. Twisted Fate has lots of options with his kit and it is important you know all of them to make use of it.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

  • Twisted Fates ultimate positioning is crucial to failed/successful ganks/fights. Positioning yourself in a gank requires you to be somewhere that cuts off their escape path to safety or a general path they are forced to take and be in range of your stun card. When ulting into a fight or getting a catch with your team position yourself in between your team and the enemy. Its not always a good idea to ult into their back line when your team is a decent distance away from you.
  • You need to be cycling your cards before you teleport on someone. You cant be cycling your cards when you land somewhere. You should have your gold card freshly picked before you port into gank. It is important to know you can cycle while you are using your ultimate.
  • Not commonly known is while Twisted Fate is using his hourglass, and is cycling cards before he uses the hourglass, he can continue to cycle his cards while he is in stasis and come out of Hourglass with a card selection of choice.
  • Team fighting you need to act as a support mage. You should protect your ADC unless you are looking for a pick. Otherwise, stay with the back line and keep the enemy off of your ADC.
  • One last trick that isn't that useful but can be good is baiting summoners or cool downs by using your ultimate, casting it on an enemy and then before you land to your ultimate target destination you use your Hourglass to cancel it and depending on the opponent they might use some summoners or ultimates.

Stages of the Game Back to Top

  • Early Game- If you want specific notes, refer to the matchup section for general "How to" lane vs that champion. In general you want to out farm your opponent to utilize your passive and use your ult to change the swing of the game
  • Mid Game- You should be splitting and applying pressure to the map once a tier 1 turret falls in either side lane. With this pressure it allows your team and yourself to catch up if behind. Twisted fate is great at stalling out games and turning the tides of them as well. Keep vision in these side lanes to make sure you don't run into opponents that you cannot handle.
  • Late Game- Late game should be considered similar to mid game but once late game comes around your ultimate and pressure will help contest serious objectives like inhibitors and baron/elder dragon. PLEASE be careful when splitting you have to have your eyes on the map almost at all times. Know who is where and who is missing. Do not continue to extend in lanes if you do not have vision on the enemy. If you are confident you can kill them both then keep going and let your team win a fight that has the numbers stacked towards your team or let them start baron or pressure another tower that you can rotate to with your ultimate.
