Summoner Spells Back to Top

I would say that in 95% of the games you play, you'll want 4.png and 11.png. There are certain situations that ghost could be more useful, but flash is just so useful I couldn't live without it. Whether it's flashing onto someone for a gank, flashing into baron pit for the steal (or out of it after the steal haha), or using it to secure an escape, you will always find a use for it in every game. And you're jungling, so if you don't want to bring smite, please go play bots. You aren't a Korean challenger jungler, so please don't try to jungle without smite thinking it'll work out fine, It won't.

Masteries Back to Top

I feel like this one is pretty self explanatory, if you're playing a jungler you want strength of ages almost every single game, whether its Master Yi 11.png , Nidalee 76.png , or the Dyr 77.png himself.

I like to have 6 in FEROCITY to get the attack speed as well as the double edged sword, as the 3% increased damage really helps you nuke people in mid to late game.

The 6 Points in cunning is mostly for the longer buff duration, as blue is extremely important early on as you'll be needing to activate phoenix at least once at each camp, if not twice. I choose wanderer over Savagery because it helps you when you're split pushing.

RED TEAM SIDE START:

Ok, so this may look a little weird to some of you, so let me explain.

The reason I only put 3 points into udyrtigerstance.png and then go on to max udyrbearstance.png before returning to max tiger is because at around level 11 is when you're going to start looking for more opportunities for ganks and split pushing, so you'll need the longer movement speed buff from bear stance, but you don't want to put points in there too early as the first few points in Tiger are to help you clear faster. Once you have your 3rd point in Q, it will give you enough damage and attack speed to duel with anyone you need to until you hit level 15.

BLUE TEAM SIDE START:

For Blue side, you're going to want to start a little different, as you'll be starting at double golems instead of gromp.

2dd326f1d375660218f265df6c2b9303.png

The reason that I go with this alternative build when starting on Red Buff side of the jungle is because you will want turtle earlier to help sustain and survive your first clear or two of the jungle, since you wont have blue buff to help you spam phoenix early on.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

The default start on udyr, nothing to change here, it works well so no reason to try and fix it.

Core Items

You're going to want this on your first back, it should cost you 900 gold.
Get this whenever you have a spare 250g, its good to have but udyr can clear camps very fast once he has a 3rd point into his R, so you'll be using this almost exclusively for the mana it gives you. it is useful however to pop all 5 charges right before you go in for a gank, so that you'll slowly heal up incase any damage is done to you.
DAMAGE ITEMS: Try to have Devourer by 10 minutes, though i've gotten it as early as 7 minutes by getting a successful gank off. once you get it, your clear time in the jungle will jump significantly. Tri Force is an obvious buy. Some would say to go iceborn, but I feel that the stats you get from Tri are much more important, and with red buff you wont need to slow from iceborn as much.
This will be your 4th item no matter what. The movement speed and extra damage it gives you are perfect for udyr, and will help you split very well.
Swifties should be your go-to boot upgrade most of the time, though if you're extremely behind and your team has no tank whatsoever, feel free to go merc treads if you need the extra MR. if you're in the same situation but need armor, just get swifties and use the last 2 slots for armor items.
    EXAMPLE BUILD ORDER

Situational Items

These are all decent 6th items on udyr, feel free to get whatever is needed at the time.
Frozen heart is a very good 5th item, especially if the majority of the enemies are doing physical damage. I would almost put it as a core item, but there are so many good items on udyr that i'll let you decide depending on the situation you're in. this is mandatory if you are split pushing and your team is refusing to work together and push another lane however, as you'll need the CDR and Mana to spam bear to escape.
Frozen mallet can be a decent 6th item if you need some health. It is a good thing to have if your adc is taking your red once laning phase ends. If they are doing very bad you should really try to ask them to not take it, or smite it away from them if possible, though feel free to let them have it if they're going even or better, as this item will give you enough of a slow effect to allow it.
Im not sure how I feel about this item now that it is getting nerfed. It is still a solid choice, helping you split push, but the 5 health it has, similar to a pink ward, will definitely hurt its potential. If you get this, save it for when you're pushing a tower, just throw it down next to the tower and take it asap. it wont survive long anyways, so might as well not even bother hiding it in a bush anymore.

VS

Amumu

Medium

This can be a difficult matchup if the amumu is very good. He will win trades early on if he tries to invade you, especially if he smites a buff away from you.

I would recommend smiting your wolf to give vision on that side of the map.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

This can go poorly for you if you cant dodge his knockup, but it is relatively easy to avoid. He is easy to steal camps from, so once you get devourer, make his jungle yours. Buy a pink and put it near his red in one of the bushes he wont go through as much if he doesnt gank much. Try to kill him at red if possible when he goes for his second red buff.

VS

Diana

Hard

This might be a little biased, but god I hate this champion right now. She can keep up with you even when you have swifties and level 5 udyrbearstance.png .

Against Diana, my advice would be to go more towards a tankier build and try to farm as best as possible. Good luck

VS

Ekko

Medium

This one is a bit of a toss up, you'll need to do your best to predict where he places his ekkoW.png , and try to retreat for a moment when he uses it. If you can do go back in and kill him even if he ults you, then do so, otherwise accept that you got some damage off on him and be happy with that.

VS

Elise

Hard

If she lands eliseE.png on you, she will burst you down really hard without you returning anything to her. Try to avoid fighting her as much as possible early on and try to farm as hard as possible. If possible, try to take her red if she goes for a gank while it is up, same with blue, however you should prioritize red.

VS

Evelynn

Easy

super easy game if you face her, one of the easier ones.

She may try to invade you early, be cautious of that. Once you get about level 7 you can invade her and destroy her in her own jungle as long as she isnt already fed.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

Try to save your stun until after he fears you, then go for your udyrbearstance.png and stop his drain. If you cant kill him, or at least get very close to killing him by the time he starts his second drain.png then just leave. Another champion who you can invade post level 7 relatively easy.

VS

Fizz

Medium

Not many people do this, but i've seen and played tanky fizz in the jungle and it is very strong. He can chase you very easily, so you need to dodge his fizzmarinerdoom.png if you want to win a fight against him. If you're both full hp and he doesnt have ult, you should win this fight. Save your bear stance for if he tries to fizzjump.png away, unless you think he's going to kill you.

VS

Gragas

Medium

He can be very annoying, he will be constantly ganking your teammates. The upside to this is you can steal alot of his camps, so go for it. Try to drop a ward or two for your teammates every now and again, and if you notice he is camping a lane, buy a pink for your taemmate if they wont. They're cheap and it could reduce alot of stress later on. He is pretty useless later on compared to you, so this matchup will get easier post 30 minutes.

VS

Graves

Medium

This one shouldnt be terrible unless he gets alot of successful ganks off. His damage late game is pretty insane, so try to do your best to dodge his Q entirely, if not at least the second part of it. This is a matchup where I would recommend splitting more often late game, as he can nuke you if he doesnt fall really far behind.

Try to countergank him if you're close, he uses up alot of his damage early in the gank, so you can try to get in and kill him once his Q and R  are down.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

You can outrun his hecarimramp.png with your udyrbearstance.png , so this shouldnt be too hard.

Try to avoid grouping together in fights, if he hits you and at least 2 other teammates with his hecarimult.png , the fight is lost.

VS

Jax

Hard

His jaxcounterstrike.png is going to make life pretty difficult, but if you can fake him out and make him waste E, it has a long cooldown, so feel free to fight him after it if you feel strong enough. Try to avoid fighting him if he is in the middle of farming, as his passive will be stacked up.

This is another matchup you'll want to focus more on split pushing. Save a chilling smite charge to use for escaping him if he tries to let E run the entire time instead of reactivating it early.

VS

Kha'Zix

Easy

Late game you will destroy him, early game you can kill him in his jungle, try to fight him next to one of his camps, though dont tank the monsters if possible. His Q's isolation damage isnt very big early game, so dont be too afraid.

pretty easy unless he gets super fed.

VS

Kindred

Easy

Relatively easy, just try not to 1v2 if she has her ult up, you'll overestimate your power and they'll kill you.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

He's really strong early, and if he's a good lee sin he will try to invade you. Don't expect to have every one of your buffs this game. Post 30 minutes, he is pretty useless unless, take objectives and deny him camps if possible.

VS

Master Yi

Easy

Super easy match up here, even more so because Yi's always overestimate their damage.

He will win fights until about level 8 or 9 however, so be careful if he invades. Once you get sated you win every fight against him unless he is completely fed.

Make sure you steal as many camps from him as possible, he is useless without sated compared to you.

VS

Nautilus

Hard

This guy needs nerfs, he's extremely annoying to fight. Split push, dodge his Q as it is telegraphed relatively well. If you are having trouble dodging it, try running in a straight line for 1-2 seconds, baiting him into throwing it at you, then go for the dodge. See how he plays, this wont work if he always throws it as soon as there is nothing between you and him. If that is the case, just do your best to move around alot to make it harder for him.

VS

Nocturne

Medium

This is normally easy, if he goes full damage he will do quite a bit though, so be careful of his nocturneunspeakablehorror.png . Also, if you try to chase him, dont hit him right away with udyrbearstance.png , try to bait out his W.

VS

Nunu

Medium

He's going to steal alot of your camps. This isnt a hard matchup, but you won't be having too much fun.

VS

Olaf

Hard

If he has a lead avoid fighting him 1v1, he has deceptively high damage with his passive. Try to put him behind with a gank or two early if he is top lane.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

The only reason I am listing him as hard is because alot of people don't know how to play against him, therefore he will be getting fed off your teammates. If he isnt fed by 20 minutes he is probably not that great, so then i'd rate the difficulty as Easy. His passive can be annoying, but its not terrible. Try to get out of his pantheon_heartseeker.png though, sidestepping it asap and getting behind him, making him have to run past you to head towards safety.

VS

Rammus

Medium

You're never going to kill him, but he's pretty useless against you, especially if he uses puncturingtaunt.png against someone else. Get past him and focus whoever is fed. Try to avoid fighting under turret if he is near, his taunt will get you killed if he lands it.

VS

Rek'Sai

Easy

Pretty easy, he can't out damage you, so he's going to gank alot. Take his camps, make him tilt.

VS

Rengar

Medium

can be easy or hard, all depends on how fed he gets off your teammates early. Haven't faced one in ages, not sure if they typically invade vs an udyr. Try to ward your jungle entrance on red buff side at the entrance near mid. He will probably try to take your camps, a pink ward will save you alot of pain.

VS

Sejuani

Medium

She is pretty strong right now, but mid to late game you will be able to 1v1 her. She makes teamfights difficult, so this is a matchup you're going to want to splitpush against more frequently.

VS

Shaco

Easy

He will try to invade you often, but he is really useless mid to late game. If he tries to invade you and doesnt kill you, he might as well be wasting his time, you wont need every buff. He will be ganking alot, so try and take his buffs as often as possible.

VS

Shyvana

Hard

Shyvana is extremely strong right now, this will be a difficult game. Get a zzrot and split as much as possible, save chilling smite to try and escape her when she comes for you.

VS

Skarner

Easy

nice free win!

seriously though, he's very bad right now, you should have a harder time losing this game than winning unless they have a vayne/leblanc/hyper carry  that gets so fed they kill you before you can touch them.

VS

Trundle

Medium

You can win trades with him once you get trinity, but run away if he ults you. This will be a relatively annoying game.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

He's going to need sated asap, so if he goes for any gank, ward where he will re-enter jungle from and take as many camps as possible, leaving 1 small monster at each so he has a hard time getting sated. early game you can definitely try to steal a buff from him, try warding one of them and smite steal it while he goes for it. if you think he might outsmite you, run in when the buff is around 800-900 hp with bear stance, stun him then take the buff and run.

VS

Vi

Medium

She can be annoying if she is fed as its hard to run away from her, but you can kill her in a 1v1 pretty easy past level 8. Dont fight her until you have devourer at least. (doesnt need to be sated)

VS

Volibear

Hard

Volibear carries games almost as well as you do, but he focuses on teamfights whereas you focus on splitting, so try to convince your team to avoid fights and let you do your thing. if you go to split make sure you ward in his jungle so you can get a little warning before he is on top of you.

VS

Warwick

Easy

This guy is pretty useless vs you. Be careful though, try to wait to enter teamfights until after he ults someone else. You can 1v1 him post level 8-9.

VS

Wukong

Medium

This guy can carry pretty well, he is another champion who excels at teamfights, so try to focus on splitpushing against him.

VS

Xin Zhao

Medium

All depends on how fed you each are when you fight. I would avoid fighting him mid game until you have dead mans plate at least. early game he will win fights.

VS

Zac

Medium

Zac has alot of damage output for a champion that builds full tank. If you cant kill him quickly, dont try, his W spam will hurt alot. He wont really be able to 100-0 you, but the fight will last quite a while mid to late game, so avoid it if you cant see where his team is. You will win the fight late game, and maybe mid game, but only in 1v1's.

Playstyle Back to Top

Ok, so when playing udyr, you need to follow 3 rules to the best of your ability.

RULE 1:
Dont type in chat. The biggest mistake people make (including myself at times) is typing in chat too much. Now, dont let this discourage you from all communication. Typing something like "annie f" to inform your team that the enemy annie has used flash, as well as a reminder to yourself, is not only acceptable, it should be a priority as soon as you aren't in danger.

What this rule means is you shouldn't waste your time typing in chat to argue with people, or even to just joke around. Yes, I know not everyone desires to take the game 100% serious, but you'll notice a large performance increase if you stop typing "..." everytime someone dies. The game is never over. Speaking of never over, on to rule 2.

RULE 2:
The game is never over. I get it, you're down 2 to 25, the enemy jinx is super fed. Trust me, I've had those games. It can be demoralizing, but I've also won most of those games as well. You're not in the LCS, your enemies will make mistakes. If you follow rule 3, it wont matter how fed they are as long as you play smart. Focus on objectives, try to get your team some towers. Do whatever you can to convince your team to keep playing.

RULE 3:
Stop trying to gank! Now, some of you are probably sitting there thinking "welp, time to find another guide, this guy doesn't know what he's fking talking about!". Hold on a sec. Unless you're duo'ing with someone who you know is CONSISTENTLY good, not just someone who has good games now and again, then you should not be ganking unless it will be a super easy clean up for you. Did the enemy jhin flash 40 seconds ago? go bot, thats an easy kill (though make sure you ward the enemy side bush, whether that is tri bush or river bush). Otherwise, you should be focusing on the person who will be carrying the game, which is YOU. Dont waste time trying to help someone if it wont be a super easy kill even if your teammmate doesnt follow up, as all this will do is set you behind if you dont kill them (or your ally kills them). Your allies will complain in chat, it will happen. Ignore them. If you cant, and you start to break rule 1, then just mute them. Once you come out of the jungle at around 20 minutes with a sated devourer, your team wont care how little you ganked when you get a triple kill every time you teamfight.

Ok, so you've read the 3 rules above? GOOD.
Now, on to the things that arent covered above.

HOW TO HANDLE LOSING A BUFF TO AN INVADE:
Did the yi see you die top lane trying to gank when you should have been farming and so he took your blue buff? Dont worry about it. For the first 20 minutes, past your first time getting each buff, they aren't really that important. Red buff's damage in the jungle isnt going to kill you if you dont have it, and by your second or third time clearing you should have the hunters potion, which will cover your mana concerns. If possible, be aware of his position and try to steal his next buff.

INVADING THE ENEMY:
Make sure you pay attention to the map as much as possible. You're in the jungle, you dont need to watch the gromp the whole time you're attacking him. Did you just see the enemy try to gank top lane? Great, head to their bottom side of the jungle and take everything from them. Leave the small monsters if they're a devourer jungler, as this will set them back extremely far.

TAKING ENEMY BUFFS:
Ok, please don't be the guy who leaves the small monsters. Sure, it might mean they wont have their buff for longer, but unless you ward their buff and they clear the small ones soon after, you wont have the timer. Any time my buff is stolen and they dont clear it all, I love it. Just make sure you ward your buffs if you take theirs so they dont try to steal right back from you. Also, even if you have buffs, still take yours asap so they dont take them. If you just took their blue and yours is up, feel free to give it to your mid laner if they are doing well.

If you have any topics you would like to see in this section, please let me know!

My Games Back to Top

Here are a few example games, good and bad, that show that even though im currently in silver, I know what i'm talking about. I am currently 15-7 with Udyr. 5 of those losses are from me trying to use Runic Echoes at the start of the season, during placements. 1 Loss is me trying to do top udyr. So I am currently 15-1 with udyr using Devourer in the jungle.

Here are my last 5 games as Udyr:
