Summoner Spells Back to Top

  • 4.pngBest summoner spell hands down. A must on Varus considering he has no way to escape, and it's pretty immobile.
  • 7.pngBest defensive spell ADCs have. Gives you a nice MS and health boost to survive
  • 21.pngIt's still pretty good, Heal is better though but you can still pick this.
  • 1.pngSituational, if you're against a Leona lane for example.

New Runes Back to Top

Best runes for ADC as of early 2018. Recent changes have made Precision Into sorcery better. Since they've nerfed stopwatch you get more value out of sorcery tree now.

Abilities explanation

  • Living Vengeance
    Living Vengeance

INNATE: Varus gains 40% (+ 50% bonus attack speed) bonus attack speed for 5 seconds upon scoring champion kills or assists, reduced to 20% (+ 25% bonus attack speed) bonus attack speed on minion or monster kills.

A nice passive, helps you last hit, and it turns those 2v2 fights in your advantage easily, with the massive 40% AS buff you get, getting a kill in lane usually means a double kill. You also want to make sure to have your passive before trading in lane, it helps you shoot 1 more shot faster than your opponent.

It also scales incredibly hard with your bonus attack speed which is why we focus on amplifying it. This is essentially what makes Varus a machine gun. 1 takedown raises your DPS to the skies and there's no frontline that can survive your massive increase in attack speed.

  • varusq.png Piercing Arrow

This is Varus's core ability and the bread and butter of his kit. A powerful shot that can either be used for poking in sieges, bursting an enemy before you even get into the fight, or kill that fleeing enemy. it boasts an incredible 1625 range.

With the huge AD scaling and base damage this ability is a force to be reckoned with, and it should not be taken lightly the usefulness of this ability.

When trading you might wanna fire it quickly (tapping Q should do it if you have smart cast on) for burst damage and popping your W(see below) faster. Popping varusw.png with this ability reduces it's cooldown by 4
Mastering this ability takes time and it's also very punishing when you miss it because you miss out on alot of damage. I really can't emphasize enough on how IMPORTANT it is for you to master this ability, this is what makes a good Varus player.

Now, while i do call this ability the "core of Varus' kit" in this build it really isn't. Because this build doesn't focus on poking as it's ineffective after Riot nerfed it. So we can say that the actual core of this build is his varusw.png and hisvaruspassive.png

This ability also requires heavy AD and lethality to be a real threat which this build doesn't have a lot of.

785.jpg
  • Blighted Quivervarusw.png

This is one awesome ability, you'll get to love these stacks on you see them in action. Proper management of the amount of stack your enemies have will guarantee you kills, simply because the % damage this thing does when fully stacked is huge, you always need to try and get someone to atleast 2 or 3 stacks before detonating them with an ability, once you get AS this get easier, this ability has a good synergy with Living Vengeance (Passive) as it'll make you attack faster thus more stacks and more damage.

This is also what makes Varus a tank buster and the 2nd part of the machine gun. With this build and this ability you are capable of cutting through ANY frontline like a hot knife through butter.
785.jpg
  • varuse.png Hail of Arrows

This is Varus's E, a good utlity ability it also has some nice damage. This is ability is so useful, it helps you slow targets so you can get a few attacks more before they go out of range, it also helps you escape thick situations, as well as detonating blights stacks, and kill that pesky mundo who won't stop healing.

We max it first because for a DPS oriented build it's more consistent to proc your varusw.png as it's a AOE zone attack that requires no charging like varusq.png does.

785.jpg

  • varusr.png Chain of Corruption

Ooh your  Ultimate. This is what makes Varus stand out, the ability to potentially lock down an entire team and stop initiation on their tracks is simply beautiful almost like poetry.
Use this when you want to catch someone out of position, set up a gank bot lane, escape from that Shyvana, and use it in teamfights whenever you believe it can lock down many targets. Chain of Corruption is pretty good at following up another CC like Orianna's ultimate. But be careful when using it, it's pretty easy to miss because it has a 0.5 second delay to shoot it.

It's also even deadlier than before because affected targets gain 3 stacks W meaning it speeds up your burst by A LOT, allowing you to destroy your lane opponent with no retaliation in many cases.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Best start for AD carry, offers all the stats needed to play the lane.
If you are against a heavy poke bot lane like Sona.
Depending on the comp, normally you go Berserker but sometimes you might benefit from some defenses in your boots.

Core Items

Rageblade into wits end, into runnans This is your core to start unleashing the machine gun.
Mortal reminder for team with heroes that rely on healing like WW, Vlad/ Soraka and LDR for VERY tanky heroes like Sion, Cho etc. Get these after your IE/bork normally, unless you absolutely need these asap.
The last on-hit item, very strong for our build.
Can sell Wits End for any of these late game since wits end doesn't scale that well compared to crit.

Situational Items

Survability for tough team comps that can easily get to you or put damage on you quickly.

The machine gun Varus build stacks attack speed and on-hit to decimate the enemy team. The attack speed synergizes well with varuspassive.pngandvarusw.png giving you high dps and mixed damage.

VS

Ashe

Easy
Difficulty: 2/5

She can't trade with you, but she can out poke you with volley and basic attacks since she outranges you. You need to be careful of how much harass to take, and at level 6 she can kill you, but generally you should take advantage by level 3.

VS

Caitlyn

Medium
Difficulty: 3/5

Caitlyn is always annoying, but as Varus you can punish her if she decides to trade with you rather than poking because you out trade her in every single sense. At level 6 you can close in for a kill on her. This is really dependent on your support as well.

VS

Corki

Medium
Difficulty: 3/5

He has better burst than you, and it's also faster however you can still manage to out trade him at level 6 with your superior range. He has better all in than you so beware.

VS

Draven

Medium
Difficulty 3/5

Draven is pretty strong at level 1, but at level 3 you should look to kill him because you're stronger. Make sure he always fights inside your varuse.pngto make it harder to catch axes. Also at level 6 you can easily kill him with your varusr.png. Always look where his axes will land and poke him with varusq.png. AND DO NOT LET HIM SNOWBALL OR HE'LL KILL YOU WHENEVER HE FEELS LIKE IT.

VS

Ezreal

Easy
Difficulty: 1/5

He's easy to beat, he can't outburst you provided you're behind minions. Since all your abilities go through minions he's easy to out trade, you outrange him with your basic attacks and your blighted quiver makes sure he doesn't out damage you in a AA fight.

VS

Jhin

Easy

Difficulty 1/5

You outrange him, outburst him and once you hit level 6 there's nothing he can do other than eat free varusq.pngvaruse.png with your ult.

Beware of his ultimate jhinR.png because that thing can do some serious damage if you get careless and allow him to chain some shots onto you. Also his jhinW.png can root you from a huge range and can be used to pick you off.

Other than that he's fairly easy for Varus.

VS

Jinx

Easy
Jinx is pretty easy pre 6, you outburst her and outpoke her. At level 6 she gets a huge spike and it's capable of killing you, you should always look to poke her before fights.

VS

Kalista

Medium

Difficulty :3/5

Not as a strong as before, Varus can definitely kill her provided you don't eat many of her kalistaE.png stacks for free.

Watch her movements carefully so you don't miss your varusq.pngorvaruse.png. If she can't dodge your abilities you're most likely to win every trade.

At level 6 with your varusr.png this lane is yours.

VS

Kog'Maw

Medium
Difficulty: 3/5

You can only defeat him in short trades 2 AAs and a Q/E should do it. if you stay too long in his range his W will eat you alive, you also need to avoid getting hit by his Q(Armor MR shred)before fights. At level 6 it should be possible to all him.

VS

Leona

Hard
Difficulty: 5/5

She makes your life hell, can decide when to fight and makes every fight on her terms which is something Varus doesn't like, she can also hold you down and since you don't have any escapes you usually die.

VS

Lucian

Hard
Difficulty: 4/5

Lucian is pretty strong when he is in your face, he is incredibly tough to fight in bot lane, his mobility is pretty annoying for Varus.

Your mindset against him should be to wear him down without losing too much HP, poke with your superior Autoattack range and your Q.

At level 6 your varusr.png will give you an edge in this fight as you can lock him down outside his AA range popvarusw.png before he can retaliate.

Beware of his lucianE.png and try to not get hit by many of hislucianR.png shots.

This lane is usually decided by your supports. If your support can keep him off you he just dies without standing a chance.

VS

Miss Fortune

Medium
Difficulty: 3/5

After her recent buffs she's incredible tough to face, avoid getting hit by hermissfortunericochetshot.png after it hits a minion, try to not stand directly behind low HP minions because the damage her Q does is unreal when it's used this way.

As usual at level 6 with your varusr.png you can seal the deal and get a kill, just avoid getting too poked down by her Q harass.

VS

Nautilus

Hard

Difficulty 5/5

Holy ***** this guy is just annoying.

All his abilities hit hard, he can force engages with hisnautilusanchordrag.png and nautilusgrandline.png, and it's incredibly tough to kill due to his sheer tankyness and his nautiluspiercinggaze.png. He has all the combinations Varus hates to play against.

If he's coupled with a "in your face" type AD carry you're gonna have a bad time, you just can't disengage from him, neither punish him hard enough when he messes up. I recommend playing REAAAAAAAALLLLY safe, and wait for ganks, get a strong support that can withstand some hits and protect you.

VS

Quinn

Easy
Difficulty: 1/5

She can't trade with you, she can't outpoke, only thing she can is all in you at level 6 but it's unlikely to happen due to your ultimate stopping her in her tracks. Easy match up for you, but beware of her blind.

VS

Rakan

Medium

Generally have to keep your range from him at all times to make it harder for him to rakanw.pngor rakanr.png on you, he's not that hard and at level 6 he's easy to burst down if you catch him with varusr.png

VS

Sivir

Medium
Difficulty: 2/5

She can only out trade you if she spell shields your abilities, with a good support you can bait it out and proceed to rain arrows all over her.

VS

Tristana

Medium
Difficulty: 3/5

She's annoying to face, her detonatingshot.png does alot of damage in lane so you need to be careful and not eat many of those for free because her rocketjump.png can reset when her E stacks reach their max and Tristana will jump on you twice, which as Varus is pretty hard to deal with.

At level 6 this lane is yours provided your support can help you.

VS

Twitch

Medium

Difficulty: 3/5

Twitch doesn't really defeat you in lane, but if you mess up or never bully him early game he's going to destroy you at level 6 with his ultimate.

Beware of his sneak cheesy attacks, don't overextend.

VS

Varus

Hard
Difficulty: 5/5 gg wp ff@20

may the best varus win!

VS

Vayne

Medium
Difficulty: 3/5

A tricky lane, you out trade her and out poke her always at early levels. However at level 6 provided you didn't get to bully her hard enough she can kill you with ease. You must always hit her with your ultimate, if you don't you lose. And always poke her with your AAs

VS

Xayah

Medium

Xayah has low range and needs time beforexayahe.png ramps. You should always orb walk away from her feathers when trading and abuse your superior range on her.

At level 6 be careful with herxayahr.png as it's a quick way to stack up feathers and can easily kill you. Your varusr.png can get you killed if you are not careful because you can make yourself an easy target while you try to put damage on her . Her ultimate also makes her invulnerable so you have to be careful she doesn't dodge your damage skills with it.

Varus should win, if he has a support that can poke her and end fights quickly because Xayah benefits from long fights.

Laning and trading Back to Top

110.png trading and overall laning effectiveness relies on how well you can use hisvarusw.png and how good you are at hitting dem varusq.png

Here i have a few simple tips to make your life easier with Varus.

1- Stacking up your blight is the most effective method of trading you can have as Varus, one of the easiest way to stack your W is by using your minions to trade damage. You do this by watching when the enemy carry goes for a kill on your minion, when he moves for the hit you hit him with your basic attack, do this a couple of times and the damage adds up. Varus usually has more range than many other AD carries so he can easily hit them without receiving much damage back.

This gets easier as you learn proper wave manipulation techniques which i can't explain here as it'll take too much time.

2- Sometimes you don't have time to apply your blight stacks and using an ability right away instead of saving them for your blight stacks is the best way to fight. Knowing when to identify this situations is important to not miss out on kills.

3- Your varusr.png is deadly when used in combination with your jungler and support and it usually leads to many double kills in bot lane, due to the spreading mechanic. If you hit the enemy carry, his support can try to help him which in turn he risks getting caught by the tendril and become a free kill for you.

There aren't many bot lane combos that can survive a gank against Varus and a heavy CC support or jungler, many match ups against marksmen who rely on mobility like 67.png429.png236.png are won by landing a good Chain Of Corruption.

Teamfights/Skirmishes Back to Top

Varus is an immobile carry, with pretty little defensive abilities outside of his ultimate, so keeping your distance from their fighters/assassins is essential in order to survive.

Clever AD carry players take into account enemies cooldowns and play around them to ensure that they never get caught in dangerous position and die, Varus' player HAVE to know this in order to not get blown up in a teamfight.

Examples: See a Renekton jump in and use both of his E dashes, now you know he can't get near you without blowing his flash. He's an easy target for you and poses no threat unless you let him walk up to you.

Or enemy Zed blew his ult and got caught in a bad position, you can burst him down if it doesn't mean you'll die. Surviving as ADC is your number 1 priority in a teamfight.

Usually in skirmishes, enemy champions can be MIA (missing in action) meaning you don't see them on the map because they were far away from the fight and are now heading there, in fights it can be hard to keep track of where everybody is but as an ADC it's key that you keep track of where  the threats are coming from so you can avoid getting surprised by the enemy Zed/Leblanc from the rear.

Your ultimate is a great peeling tool. Due to it's spreading mechanic it's not a good idea to simply throw it randomly, you have to watch careful for the chance for it to spread into more than just 2 targets, since it's always spreading it can mess up enemy dives towards you and give you enough time to focus your target and kill it.

However there are many times where there's not a perfect chance to wait and throw your ult. Sometimes you get caught in a bad spot and you have to throw it to stop the dive, which is acceptable, since teamfights are usually pretty chaotic.

Varus has a dangerous poke that can quickly turn fights in your favor. The amount of times i've won dragon fights before they started because i poked down their mid laner or ADC is countless, as Varus abusing that strong poke you get by early/mid game once you complete BF/LW sword is essential to ensure fights turn in your favor.

Varus may lack the frontloaded burst Graves has, or the kiting ability Vayne and Lucian have, but he can turn fights in his team's favor before they even start, what's better than knowing their mid laner and ADC have to play way too far back because their HP is low?

Note: I don't recommend poking down tanky targets since they are pretty beefy and usually have good HP regen. It's a waste of mana trying to poke down that Maokai or Nautilius.

NOTE: As of recently Varus poke is very lackluster and is not advised to use all your mana for poke, this playstyle was nerfed and is not longer supported.

Who to focus:

Focusing in teamfights it's simple for ADCs. I always follow one simple rule; focus the closest target, be it a tank, their ADC or support. Always stay behind/with your tanks or with whoever has CC to protect you.

Following that rule ensures you keep good positioning and minimizes your risks of dying, however when you apply the "keep track of enemies cooldowns strategy" you can ignore the tank that blew all his CC/cooldowns and go for a more important target, but this strategy takes alot of game knowledge to pull it off and takes time to learn.

About me Back to Top

Diamond Varus main since release and he's been my favorite champion ever since.

I'm in the top 10 Varus in the world, not to brag about it but it can help knowing that the author can actually play the champion and he isn't clueless about it.
