Summoner Spells Back to Top

6.png4.png Ghost/Flash gives you a lot of mobility to kite back when combined with your slow field and 3071_32.png, default choice unless you need the heal to survive lane.
7.png4.png Heal/Flash gives you some more survivability against lanes that are hard for you, such as 7_64.png or 126_64.png. You should take heal instead of barrier for the matchups where the movement speed heal gives is more important than the extra hp given by barrier.
21.png4.png Barrier/Flash gives you more health than heal, which makes it strong against very heavy burst champions like 238_64.png, however it lacks the mobility that heal gives.
1.png4.png Cleanse/Flash offers a strong escape against enemy who rely on long duration CC to lock you down, such as 45_64.png or 127_64.png. Consider cleanse when the enemy team has heavy CC as well such as a team of 92_64.png32_64.png1_64.png44_64.png222_64.png, in this scenario cleanse is good both in lane against 1_64.png(even though she does not rely too heavily on stun to do her damage) and to avoid getting locked down by the other members.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Against a lane you think you can win easily
    Need mobility early
Against lanes that you think you can win easily, and that you will not take much harass in.
If you want to 3 pots can be subbed for refillable potion, and you can upgrade to corrupting if you feel like you will need the sustain. Corrupting potion is also an okay start if you feel you might need sustain.
A good start against harder lanes

Core Items

Rush manamune as fast as you possibly can, the tear is very hard to stack by itself. CDR boots are great to help you spam out more poke.
After you have both manamune and CDR boots get a Youmuu's for some kiting capability, then build an LW if the enemy is stacking armor.
Your last item can be a defensive buy. These are some of the best options

Situational Items

Having trouble vs AP mid early?
Swifties help to alleviate some of the Movement speed lost when charging an arrow, but lack the CDR given by Lucidity boots
A strong choice, especially when coupled with Essence Reaver.

Starting Items

1055.png2003_32.pngAgainst most lanes
1036_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png Against lanes that you think you can snowball.
1001.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png is a great start if you need to dodge heavily in your lane.
1083.png2003_32.png is a decent start against lanes that you think you can harass down very easily early and get a good lead without taking much damage.
2033.png on it's own is also a fine start if you feel you need the sustain.

Core Items

3004_32.png Manamune lets Varus spam arrows late, you need to rush it early because 3070_32.png stacks very slowly with Varus, and it it vital to the build
3158_32.png CDR Boots let you spam your poke, slow, and ult to poke the enemy team down.
3142.png Gives you some very solid CDR, attack damage, and Armor Penetration and can help increase your damage output and ability to escape on a fairly short cooldown.
3035.png LW makes your arrows hurt, adding some more to your AD, but more importantly giving you ample bonus Armor Penetration and an upgrade that can help you take down tanks (3036.png) or apply grievous wounds (3033.png).
3814.png Gives a hefty amount of lethality and AD along with a useful spell shield and MR to help you when facing mages.
3147.png Gives the lethality that you buy some extra heft with a lethality scaling auto attack passive and prevents some enemy ward coverage. A good buy every game, sometimes before 3814.png if you don't need the MR or active effect.

Situational Items

3812.png DD is a GREAT item for poke style Varus builds, giving you Lifesteal on your arrows and giving more CDR if you still need it.
3022_32.png Frozen Mallet helps you kite, so that you can continue to poke without being dove by the enemy team's front line.
3026_32.png If your team is peeling for you, but they have a strong flanking team or an assassin, then GA is a great buy
3102_32.pngVeil is good against champions who can catch you out easily with one ability, such as 103_64.png45_64.png1_64.png.
3139_32.pngMercurial helps you poke harder with a lot of extra AD, but also gives you a very helpful active ability that can save your life against champions such as 90_64.png238_64.png120_64.png, get this instead of a lifesteal item if you need the cleanse effect.
3156_32.pngMaw is another good poke scaling defensive item, the shield can be pesky for AP mids to get through, get this instead of a lifesteal item if you built a 3155_32.png early.

So, in summary your build should look somewhat like this:
3004.png>3142.png >3158.png>3814.png>3147.png>3036.png/3033.png or a defensive item if needed.
This build path is fairly static as of patch 7.4 with the strength of Lethality items. Some may argue to build 3142.png before 3004.png. This is a fair idea, if you do build a 3070.png>3142.png>3004.png. This will give you more early damage, but you will have a significantly later completed mana item as 3070.png stacks very slowly on Varus compared to most lower cooldown casters that use it, I find that the way 3004.png stacks on your autos is important for his mana pool early.

VS

Ahri

Medium
Summoner Spells: 6.png4.png or 1.png4.png if enemy team is heavy cc
Starting Items: 1001_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2004_32.png
Ahri can gap close very quickly against you with her ult post 6, be very careful when she ults forward against you, one charm and full combo will kill you early. The good news is that you out range her heavily with both your abilities and auto attacks, so you can bully her early, and poke her out if you can avoid her burst.

VS

Annie

Medium

Summoner Spells: 21.png4.png or 1.png4.png if the enemy team has more CC (Amummu, Liss)

Starting Items: 2041_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png
Annie can be poked out quite easily in lane, as long as you conserve your mana well. You both out range her and out damage her early, however at level 6 your ult will not stop her from dropping her combo on your face and killing you, so be careful, especially if she has tibbers and/or stun up.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Summoner Spells: 6.png4.png

Starting Items: 1001_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2004_32.png
You out range Cassiopeia all stages of the game, but she will out damage you and kite you if you get hit with her poison. If you never get hit with poison, you will win your lane. After 6, you can try to prevent getting ulted by charging your Q facing backwards.

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

Summoner Spells: 6.png4.png or 21.png4.png

Starting Items: 1001_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2004_32.png2004_32.png
Cho'Gath has deadly burst at 6 with his ult + Q , but his Q is his only CC to keep you down and he is easy to harass when he goes in for CS. You have a lot of issues against Cho'Gath because of your lack of mobility which makes saying dodge Q easier said than done, but dodge Q.

VS

Corki

Medium

Summoner Spells:21.png4.png
Starting Items:1055.png2003.png

Corki mid has a good amount of burst with his missiles and bombs, but you can easily out trade him as your sustained damage is better. Additionally, you have a slightly longer auto attack range than him, so you can ult him and keep him away for a very effective trade after level 6 as well.

VS

Diana

Medium

Summoner Spells:21.png4.png

Starting Items: 2041_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2004_32.png
Diana has a fairly weak early game with no gap close until she gets her ult, but be careful of her Q , even at early levels it chunks you down pretty hard. Luckily you can harass her early with your Q and E. Just be careful after Diana gets her ult because you have very low mobility, so if she hits her Q , you will probably have to flash or ult to get away from her.

VS

Ekko

Hard

Summoner Spells:6.png4.png

Starting Items:1001_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2004_32.png
You will win against Ekko if you can dodge his abilities, which are all fairly telegraphed. Watch out when you have 2 stacks on you because he bursts really hard with his 3rd stack and he can subsequently stick close to you with the movement speed.

VS

Fizz

Hard

Summoner Spells: 21.png4.png

Starting Items: 2041_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2004_32.png
Fizz has high kill potential on you all game with your lack of mobility, and he is not easily disabled even with your ult(which he can dodge with his Playful/Trickster). In lane phase you can harass him level 1, but other than that you should play far back in the lane and get CS with your Q. In teamfights try to catch him off-guard with your ult and have your team collapse on him.

VS

Galio

Easy
Summoner Spells: 6.png4.png
Starting Items: 1036_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2004_32.png or 1055_32.png2003_32.png
Galio can't harass as hard as you, can't out trade you, and can't block your harass with his shield very effectively. Poke him down with your Q and E and keep him away from ulting you and your team with your ult in teamfights.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

Summoner Spells:6.png4.png

Starting Items:2041_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2004_32.png2004_32.png or 1036_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2004_32.png if you are confident
Heimerdinger's main strength is the zone control he has with his turrets. His turrets, however are vulnerable to poke, giving you a fairly easy lane phase. Heimerdinger is scary with his potential to 1v1 with the burst from his E and Q and after he gets 3157_32.png he can pop his zhonyas with his turrets down and easily out duel you.

VS

Jayce

Medium

Summoner Spells:7.png4.png

Starting Items:2041_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2004_32.png
Jayce mid plays similarly to you, he also has to stack a tear early and he pokes heavily in lane, but he has a lot more burst that you do in hammer form. Jayce is an easy kill for you if you can ult him before he hops on you in hammer form, and your poke is superior to his due to his reliance on acceleration gate. Try to poke him down, and ult him or run away if he tries to engage in hammer form.

VS

Karthus

Easy
Summoner Spells:6.png4.png
Starting Items:1001_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2004_32.png
You out range Karthus heavily in lane, and you can exploit this by punishing him for attempting to get cs or harass. In teamfights you can pick him off and keep him away by ulting him before he gets close to your team.

VS

Kassadin

Medium

Summoner Spells:6.png4.png

Starting Items:2041_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png
Kassadin can be very annoying early with his Q harass, but your Q out ranges his Q, which means you can poke him down in lane. Be careful however because he can out trade you if he gets close to you and you don't have any disables.

VS

Katarina

Easy

Summoner Spells: 21.png4.png

Starting Items: 1036.png2003.png2003.png2003.png or 1055.png2003.png
Katarina is very easy for you to force out of lane early. Her only harass comes from her Q, which she has to get close to you to even activate some of it's damage, just be careful if your Q and E are down from harassing her because she can easily out trade you and get away without much damage on her if she Q>E>W combos you. In teamfights wait until she casts her ult, then while she is immobile ult her and either fight outside of the kat ult or disengage.

Varus Mid?! (∩╹□╹∩) But that's not meta! Back to Top

Why should I play something so off meta?

Varus Mid, with this build in my eyes functions very similarly to an AD Version of Xerath with a similar slow field (Your E), and a long range poke ability (Your Q), where Varus shines is in his tank shred from his W % Hp damage and the counter engage that your ult offers. This comes with it's own share of cons however lacking Xerath's stun and heavy damage ultimate.

A little about myself Back to Top

Who Am I?

I am a Plat 4 TF main on the NA server. I started playing league mid season 2. My first main was Talon mid until level 30 when I mained Varus ADC for season 3 and half on season 4, then I went back to playing mid and maining TF. Since I made the switch back to mid I have had a lot of fun and success with TF, but I still keep up my practice with Varus, so I was overjoyed when he was played with such an innovative build. Also, if you have any Questions for me about Varus or mid in general please don't hesitate to comment here or add me in League. I stream a little bit over on http://www.twitch.tv/3clypse too, and I'm happy to answer questions in chat as well.
Thank you :3,
-InventDestiny

So why Should you trust me?

I have played a lot of Varus last season , and I have mained him since season 3 in the traditional ADC role.  The build that I show has worked for me in the mid lane, and I hope it works for you as well and that I have explained how to itemize well enough.
