Masteries Back to Top

Generic ADC Masteries. I think the only thing I take that others do not is Double edged sword over feast and Assassin over the other options. On the off chance that you are alone that 2% extra damage can be a lifesaver, and double edged sword is useful for similar reasons, just not as limited.

Max Q first so that it stays relevant for the longest time possible. It's power will spike at rank 3-5, then when you get a BF sword, and stay mostly relevant during mid game.

Max W second for the blight proc on tanks, this is a very powerful with the current tanks that can deal an excessive amount of damage whilst being invincible.

Max E third as there isn't much reason to level it early. The 25% is good enough early on, and grievous wounds stays the same regardless. However, do take one point early at third level so that you can duel more efficiently (its good for proccing W and for rendering the enemy heal useless).

Obviously, put points into ult whenever you can.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Basic start.
These are the items you should aim for first. Don't be afraid to go for raw stats before getting any real item. If you are even or ahead raw stats will most likely be better than completing an item (however, IE is a powerful spike). In an average game i build BF, greaves, bow, pick, and then either another pick or go for IE or another item (such as wits end).

Core Items

These are not core, per se, but you will build these more often than not. This AA heavy build synergises well with these items, and runaans and guinsoos especially synergise with each other and Varus' W. Guinsoos isn't as good on Varus since the rework, but it is still somewhat strong, but potentially just another situational pick.

Situational Items

This is a good pick if you are up against a lot of magic users or have a lot of magic users on your team. The combination of debuff and buff is powerful when utilised in the right situation.
Good counter to any ridiculous CC or teams with a lot of magic damage.
If the enemy team is all squishy you can skip ARM pen and just grab BT, along with another LS or defensive item usually.
If you have an enemy that dives you every fight and you cant shake the, these items are for you. PD replaces runaans.
If you need arm pen any of these will do. My preference is BC because of the health and CDR but it's personal preference/situation picking.
If a tank gets really fed and you aren't fed, this is a good purchase. It brings your % damage up and synergises well with guinsoos. You will usually have to combo this item with arm pen.
Average end game build (the LS item may change depending on team,as will the wits slot, other slots less likely).
These are VERY situational items. However, in some games defense is the best offense and keeps you in the fight that much longer. I've used items like this very rarely, mostly other builds are more effective.
I use this as a defensive item when i have someone like Udyr on my back 24/7. Iceborn seems like it would also be an acceptable pick, but I have not tested.

IE - High AS build synergises well with IE + 1 crit item.

Runaans - Synergises well with W.

Guinsoos - Synergises with the build and W.

PD - good for duels and damage mitigation.

Wits - Good pick to be defensive and offensive simultaneously.

BC - Excellent defense/offense item. Works great with runaans to help out AD teammates.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

VS

Blitzcrank

Hard

Similar to playing against Morg. Use creeps to block hook, if he tries to engage force a fight where there are minions. If there are no reasons or you are behind, run asap.

VS

Morgana

Easy

Use minions to block her Q and be careful of her W (it only hurts if it procs Thunderlords). If she pushes up on you to try and make you run force a fight where you have creeps. If you don't have creeps or aren't strong enough to fight (you should be) then back off and juke. Watch for her spellshield so you know when to ult.

VS

Sivir

Medium

Avoid standing in creeps so she has to choose between boomeranging you or minions. When fighting either rush ult if you think she won't react in time, or bait out her shield with E and Q.

Stale Item Meta Back to Top

At the moment there's a constant cycle with builds. There's a popular build, or THE build for an ADC; everyone plays it and there's no alternative. Then some smartass comes along and tries something new and everyone calls it stupid until they see it at worlds, or it starts stomping in solo queue, and then the "popular, correct build" is suddenly the new build.

tl;dr I'd like to see some variety in Varus builds, try this.
