4.pngA must for all champs. It gives you another option when you need to make a fast decision for example if you're getting ganked or have to dodge a skillshot. It's also good for catching up with low health enemies or hitting skill shots on out of reach enemies.
1.pngA good pick against champs with stuns and can also cancel14.png and3.pngwhich may get you out of a sticky situation.
3.pngThis is good against assassins and AD picks such as 157.png91.pngand238.png but I prefer using it defensively.
6.pngMy preferred pick, It is really good on Varus as he lacks mobility and it gives you more outplay potential in situations such as getting ganked or fighting a skill shot heavy team. It is also good for catching up with enemies and repositioning yourself.  
7.pngI don't recommend this as it basically is a worse version of 6.png but gives some health to you and/or an ally. It still has potential to do similar things as 6.png but can also save teammates if you prefer being a team player.
14.pngA Good pick for aggressive play if your against melee champs as it allows you to apply kill pressure early on. It can also be good if your against champs that heal such as 103.pngor84.png.
12.pngThis is good if you like roaming or are against an opponent who keeps constant pressure in your lane as it allows you to back with less worry about missing cs.It can also allow you to counter gank the enemy jungler or even gank lanes if your teammates deep ward their lanes.
21.pngA must against 14.png and has a lot of outplay potential if you are getting ganked or dove. It is also good if you are getting focused in a team fight or getting bursted in lane.

There are a lot of choices for runes but i think this one is pretty common and works really well with AP varus. Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32Is the more common choice currently in the precision tree but Lethal%20Tempo.png?width=32is also a good choice if you feel like you will have a lot of opportunities to auto attack in teamfights, I'd recommend Lethal%20Tempo.png?width=32Against melee matchups and Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32against ranged matchups. For the second rune i choose Triumph.png?width=32because it is really strong and can save you in most cases, It also helps snowball. Overheal.png?width=32Is not that bad combined with Legend%20Bloodline.png?width=32but without it you won't have any lifesteal in your build therefore making it worthless.Presence%20of%20Mind.png?width=32Can also be a good substitute for Triumph.png?width=32 but I don't feel like you can play aggressively after leveling up unless you ult instantly after hitting 6. I personally don't see the need for Legend%20Tenacity.png?width=32as you'll mostly be staying out of trouble and I'd prioritise Lifesteal and Attack Speed over Tenacity.Legend%20Bloodline.png?width=32Is a good substitute for Legend%20Alacrity.png?width=32If you want more survivability in lane.For the last three runes i prefer Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32Because of the high burst late game.Cut%20Down.png?width=32Can be good against tanks and Last%20Stand.png?width=32can be good against assassins or mages but it's all up to the matchup and/or personal preference.Secondly I take Cheap%20Shot.png?width=32andRavenous%20Hunter.png?width=32in the dominion rune set to have true damage when you varusr.png/varuse.pngan enemy and to have some survivability in late game. Although all of these are good choices for runes I have seen a bigger use in the Sorcery tree with the use of Summon%20Aerie.png?width=32because of how much damage it can rack up. for the tier 2 runes in the sorcery tree i find all three very useful as Nullifying%20Orb.png?width=32provides more defense and survivability against strong ap champions with high bursts like101.pngand90.pngManaflow%20Band.png?width=32Provides with some free damage from time to time on the enemy laner and mana gain while The%20Ultimate%20Hat.png?width=32Reduces your ult cooldown and lets you make plays more often.I find thatTranscendence.png?width=32is the most common and viable choice on varus as it provides you with even more CDR and damage.Next up Scorch.png?width=32is very good for laning and early game to get better trades and Gathering%20Storm.png?width=32is good if you are playing for late game.

Maxing varusw.pngis really good as it is the only ability apart from varusr.png that has AP scalings. It is good to max varusw.png second as it gives you more auto damage that can help with poke and CSing. It is also good since you increase the percent maximum health damage you'll deal with other abilities. After that i prefer to max varuse.png as it is an easier skill to proc blight stacks with as it is AoE and it also slows enemies in the circle which can let you catch up with enemies or run away from them but if you are playing against someone who plays safer and has a lot of escapes you should max varusq.png instead of varuse.png so you can poke them from longer ranges. It is also a good skill as it lets you hit cs that you would normally miss and it has a reduced cooldown if you hit an enemy that has blight stacks on them so you'll be able to use it more frequently.varusr.png You should always max this ability first as it is your ultimate and it scales with AP. It is also very good to catch out enemies who are badly positioned and that can give you an edge in teamfights. Varus' ult is also the ability he engages with as it snares the enemy and applies blight stacks over time. varusr.png is good to use if you're getting ganked as it stops the jungler and/or laner. The ult can also hit multiple people which can be a huge game changer for your team.

    These three items provide a good boost to AP, Attack Speed and Magic Damage on hit which is why i think they are necessary for this build.
    I take morellonomicon for the increased AP and mana since you pretty much use up your whole mana bar pretty quickly
    Very good for one shoting people and increases your damage drastically.

Here I'll go over the build and item choices. Keep in mind the situational Row are items you may want to take depending if you feel like you need more variety. Firstly the Starting items. Now Varus has a variety of choices as he is not confined to a single choice. Dorans ring is a pretty basic starting item run by practically all ap mid laners and even other adcs such as 202.png. Boots are a good choice if you feel like you are going to be pressured in lane by a lot of skillshots or want to roam early to help out your team. A dark seal is more of an aggressive starting item that allows you to snowball against lanes you should be able to win against easily or if you feel confident in your lane. Items like Cloth Armor and Null Magic Mantle are items you can take if you feel uneasy in the matchup,I'd suggest these items against people like 84.pngand91.pngsince they don't have many abilities you can dodge. For the full build i mostly take items that increase attacks speed, ability power and give CDR as the main strength of the build is the damage you can deal with the blight stacks from your w. The situational items are more of personal preference so if you feel like you could use something more defensive or aggressive that would suit the situation better than the main items go ahead. I have not tested out all the item choices so a few are quite experimental but they still should work pretty well in game.

There are a couple of different play styles for this build. My personal one is playing safe early so I can farm up and be hard to gank since then if the game goes on till late I can be a very strong glass cannon. But if that isn't your type of play style you can also try roaming a lot early with 6.png or12.png to get your team ahead or starting 1082.pngand playing aggressive in your lane to snowball yourself and potentially carry.
