Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png Flash

  • Flash is mandatory for someone like Veigar who lacks an escape. Useful in tasks such as going over walls or surprising opponents by using it aggressively to secure a kill.

+ Your Choice of Secondary Summoner Spell

14.png Ignite

  •  Should be your main summoner spell of choice if you want to be aggressive. Veigar's ultimate goal is to apply as much damage as possible to a single target and Ignite provides that extra bit of damage which is sometimes required to kill someone. I run Ignite 99% as support due to how much it adds to your kill potential bot lane.

12.png Teleport

  • Alternative to Flash + Ignite if your team requires a teleport (I usually run this if my top laner decides to go Flash + Ignite). You can also go TP if you think you know you won't have the opportunity to kill your lane opponent 1v1. This makes your laning phase easier. If you get low, just go back, buy and return with tp. Useful in ganking other lanes, making group plays around objectives or suddenly turning a teamfight in your favor. Also can be used to backdoor. Almost mandatory if you wish to play top lane Veigar.

 3.png Exhaust

  • Multipurpose summoner spell useful against melee Assassins like Akali, Zed, Ekko, and Talon. Put this on them just as they go in and their damage will be severely reduced, allowing you to fight back and possibly kill them. Also good option for support Veigar against high damage early game ADCs like Draven,  Graves, and Lucian.

 21.png Barrier

  • Use against assassins with longer range burst or assassins which don't need to stick onto you to kill you. (Ahri, LeBlanc, Fizz). You want to use barrier right when they are about to unload their damage on you so you use up the entire shield, essentially forcing them to waste their spells on your shield while you can return fire.

 6.pngGhost

  • Good for repositioning and making picks. Really only good because it's cooldown is so short. Once Riot nerfs it, I'd stay away from this and go back to one of the other ones (most likely teleport or ignite).

Masteries Back to Top

Solo Lane Mastery Page (Displayed Above) 12/18/0

Ferocity Tree

  • Sorcery: Self-explanatory, gives a boost to your abilities.
  • Feast: Provides a little bit of sustain in lane, plus the other choice (Double-edged sword gives your enemy the same bonus damage that you get which isn't worth it).
  • Vampirism: The 2% Spell Vamp while negligible, is still better than the pitiful 15 AP you get at level 18 from Natural Talent. Both masteries are pretty shitty though, so pick whichever one you want. It honestly doesn't matter too much.
  • Bounty Hunter: Best option now that Oppressor is removed.

Cunning Tree

  • Savagery: Helps you get over the trouble you have early game CSing with your auto attacks. You can get this or Wanderer, both are viable options. I usually go wanderer but newer players should stick with Savagery to help with CSing.
  • Secret Stash: Another mastery to help with your early game. Helps with your sustain.
  • Merciless: Will help you secure kills. Veigar doesn't really need the mana regen from meditation if he's playing as a solo laner.
  • Dangerous Game: Too strong not to get. Will keep you alive if you are close to death after killing your opponent.
  • Intelligence: Veigar doesn't build that much CDR outside of Morello's or Athene's so this mastery is invaluable. With this + CDR / level runes + the 20% CDR from aforementioned items, you will hit 40% CDR at level 18 without blue buff. With blue buff you can get to 45% CDR.
  • Stormraider's Surge: If you're building AP, you won't need the extra damage of TLD. Stormraiders lets you reposition after killing someone and helps during chases or escapes. I find that once team fights start, you won't have the ability to run in for an auto attack for thunderlords. You''ll be able to proc it once with your full combo (q+w+r) but not anymore. You'll find you will get more use out of stormraiders.

Support Mastery Page 12/18/0

Ferocity Tree

  • Same as the solo lane mastery page except for Expose Weakness instead of Feast. Ferocity is far better than resolve for Veigar support. (At least the way I build him. Honestly, you can put 12 points in resolve if you really want some extra survivability).

Cunning Tree

  • Pretty much the same as solo lane Veigar except for a few changes.
  • Meditation: Your goal as a support is to poke and provide CC, not securing the kill yourself, thus you'll be spamming more spells, making meditation invaluable for keeping your mana up in lane.
  • Bandit: Gives you some gold in lane from poking with auto attacks. This + the passive from Spellthiefs edge generates a ton of gold if you know how to maximize your poke.
  • Thunderlords: This is the reason why you spec into the cunning tree more than the ferocity tree. Combining the AP ratio + the scaling base damage, this does far more damage than Deathfire Touch. Adds some more burst to your kit, and gives some more power to your poke if you can hit them with 3 attacks during harass.

General Ability Max Priority: R > Q > E > W

Alternative Ability Order for first 4 Levels Against High Wave Clear:
Q > W > Q  > E (The rest is the same)

Putting points into Q veigarbalefulstrike.png

  • Lowers the cooldown of your main damage spell, and allows you to farm or poke more often with it.
  • Increases the base damage of the spell so it will deal more damage overall
  • Also increases the amount of AP you receive when you kill an enemy champion.
  • Prioritize this first for all the reasons stated above

Putting points into E veigareventhorizon.png

  • Increases Stun Duration up to 2.5 seconds. This is the main reason why you want to max it second.
  • WIll help you land your W easier as you put more points into it.
  • Decreases the cooldown as a bonus so you can use it more often
  • Prioritize this second after Q because it is far more beneficial than maxing W second

Putting points into W veigardarkmatter.png

  • Increases base damage of the spell (Not really that significant considering it already has a 1.0 AP ratio) and will help you wave clear easier
  • Decrease Cooldown so you can use it more often
  • Prioritize this last because it offers very little by putting points into it since it's hard to hit and needs your stun to land on people consistently.

Note: As a solo laner, I like putting a second point in W at level 10 so that I can usually one shot caster minions with one W. If my lane opponent gets an early Mercury Treads however, then I put a in E at level 10 for the increased stun duration instead.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Usually start this against most matchups.
Only for support. Gives you gold for poking in lane

Core Items

Typical Damage Full Build Morellos first.
Support Full Build: finish morellos before getting Eye of the watchers. Usually get Voidstaff after first 2 AP items. Leave a slot open for pink wards
Fun Tank Veigar build for top lane Build glacial shroud and then sunfires first if against ad, or get abyssal first against ap.

Situational Items

Get after first item (morellos / athenes) if you are getting tons of kills (solo lane)
6th item option for more burst damage and some AOE along with movespeed to dodge spells (solo lane or support)
6th item option for damage and a little survivability (solo lane)
6th item option against heavy AD / Attack speed composition. (Solo lane & Support)
6th item for the lulz and to kill people with an auto attack (solo lane)
Get if enemy team has high amounts of CC (Solo lane)
Substitute for morellos when you're against Zed or Talon.
Currently one of the best support items. A good buy after your core/
Good against AOE comps as support

Typical Solo Lane Build Order:

[Starting Items] > 3165.png  > 3020.png > 3089.png > 3135.png > 3157.png  > 3102.png / [Situational 6th Item]

  • I like to get one or two Dorans Rings before finishing my Morellos because it gives me some extra power and mana regen in lane.
  • Try to get the Boots of Speed before you finish Morellos or just after you finish it depending on how fast you can get Morellos
  • When building Morello's always get Last Chapter before Fiendish Codex. It'll help you stay in lane longer so you can farm more.
  • Always buy a Needlessly Large Rod for death if you have the money for it rather upgrading your boots into Sorc Shoes (You can finish sorc shoes somewhere around the time you finish Deathcap)
  • If you start Cloth Armor, get a Seekers Armguard before you finish Morellos.
  • If you want to get Banshees early, build lost chapter first and then banshees.
  • Against some champions like Vladimir or Zed, I may get Zhonya's before Deathcap, since it will heavily reduce their damage output (allows you to dodge their ulti pop).

Typical Support Build Order:

[Starting Items] > 3098.png > 2049.png + 3364.png > 3020.png > 3165.png  > 2301.png > 3135.png > Situational Item

  • Don't start Relic Shield. Even though it seems good for stacking your Q, it weakens Veigar's early game even more, and makes it very difficult to do well in laning phase. The fact that Spellthief's builds straight into Frostqueen's is a bonus on top of the fact that it gives so much gold when you land any of your poke.
  • Always buy a sightstone early on when you play support, and change to a upgraded red trinket once you get a sightstone.
  • Sometimes I may get a situational item such as Frozen Heart or Locket of the Iron Solari before I get Frost Queen's claim, it depends on how well I am doing gold-wise and what the team needs.
  • Always try to have a slot for pink wards even if it means not buying parts for another item. You always want to put one pink on the map at all times.

VS

Aatrox

Medium
[Veigar Top]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Careful of his all in. If he lands a Knockup on you, you can die
  • Try to stay at range and farm with your auto attacks and Q.
  • If he wants to all in, quickly put a E around him before he Q's. If he decides to use it, he will hit the stun wall
  • If he constantly pushes the lane, try to freeze it using your W and Q to thin the wave.
  • Care for the tower dive if you have low health. He can survive with his passive.
  • Once you get Morello's keep poking him til about 1/2 - 3/4 health and try to kill him. You probably won't be kill him with his passive up, but it's worth it to push him out of lane.

VS

Ahri

Medium
[Veigar Mid]

Summoner Spells: 4.png21.png or 4.png6.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Stay behind minions if she has charm. If she hits you, she will chunk you.
  • Keep moving in various directions to make it harder for her to hit her Q.
  • Poke with Q and autos if she misses charm.
  • Landing stun when she has the bonus movement speed from Q is very difficult
  • When you hit level 6 careful of her all in with flash and ult. If you are low, push out the lane and go back.
  • You can bait the all in, and then use barrier to win the fight.
  • You should be able to one-shot her once she gets to 2/3rds health with your full combo once you start building into Morello's

VS

Akali

Easy
[Veigar Top or Mid]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png or   4.png14.png or  4.png3.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Keep harassing her with auto attacks and Q if she tries to go for CS.
  • You can W on top of multiple low health minions just before they die so she'll be forced to either take the damage to get some last hits, use her Q to get only 1 CS or miss them all.
  • If she shrouds, just back off and wait for it to expire or for her to reappear and resume poking.
  • Once you both hit level 6 she should be low enough to kill with a full combo + ignite. If not, force her out of lane, and push out the wave.
  • If she tries to dash on top of you, just put the back edge of your stun around yourself and the front edge towards her so she will either be caught in mid air or when she lands.
  • If you have morello's and ignite, you should be able to kill her around 1/2 - 3/4th health if you land a good stun combo.

VS

Alistar

Easy
[Veigar Support]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png3.png

Start: 3303.png2003.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Poke level 1. Alistar is very weak without both his W and Q. Try to put as much damage on him as possible while staying safe so he can't go in at level 2.
  • Care for his combo level 2 which can devastate you or your ADC if you are too close to their ADC.
  • Try to stay out of his flash range as much as you can since he can flash Q and headbutt you into an unfavorable position.
  • If he tries to all in your ADC, try to stun his ADC so there won't be follow up once he CCs your ally.
  • You can keep your ADC safe while they clear a minion wave by trapping Alistar inside the cage.
  • Care for the dive level 6 when he gets his ult.

VS

Anivia

Hard
[Veigar Mid]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Keep moving so as to avoid getting hit by her stun.
  • Her auto attacks will out range yours. Therefore only use your abilities if you want to harass when she still has stun up.
  • Try to keep the wave pushed by periodically using your W and Q to CS multiple minions. If you get stuck under your turret, you will eventually get hit by a stun or you will miss a lot of CS.
  • If she's below level 6, you can harass her if if she misses her stun.
  • Ask for jungle ganks and see if you can set up a stun for the kill.
  • At level 6, you will still most likely be outmatched so stay out of her ulti range. Her e + ulti burst will chunk you.
  • Buy some items before trying to kill her. Around 3/4 health she will get turned into egg from your burst if she hasn't bought a Catalyst yet.
  • Try to finish her off while she's still in egg. Asking for jungler ganks makes this much easier.
  • Lane will probably end up becoming a farm fest, so just try to match hers until skirmishes and teamfights begin.

VS

Annie

Hard
[Veigar Mid]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png21.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Play passive and keep farming with your auto attacks and qs.
  • Use your W every so often to keep the wave pushed. You don't want to get shoved into turret.
  • Only try to go for harass or poke when she has 2 or below charges on her passive. 3 or 4 will guarantee you will get stunned and chunked.
  • Try to get as much CS as possible and go for the kill only when she gets stunned or is below 1/4 health.
  • When she hits 6 careful for her one-shot combo. She can flash Tibbers stun and kill you.

[Veigar Support]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png3.png

Start: 3303.png2003.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Focus on staying out of her Q and W range. Your abilities out ranges her's
  • Don't fight when she has 3+ charges on her passive. Her stun is even more lethal in bot lane since the ADC can also damage you or your ADC.
  • At level 6 be careful of a flash tibbers stun. You can get a kill on her with your ADC if you can stun her and land your full combo + ignite if you get the right opportunity.

VS

Ashe

Medium
[Veigar Support]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png3.png

Start: 3303.png2003.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Don't try to fight level 1. She outranges you with volley and will most likely outrange your ADC also.
  • Go for poke while weaving between your minions to avoid getting hit by volleys.
  • If you land a stun, try to unload as much damage as possible with your auto attacks, Q and W.
  • If she goes for CS, and is in range of your Q and auto attacks, poke her just as she is about to hit the minions for free poke.
  • When you hit 6, careful for her Arrow. If it hits you and there is enough follow up you will be helpless and will die.
  • Otherwise, keep poking and if you set up a good stun on her, use your burst and ignite to get her low enough for your ADC to finish her off.

VS

Azir

Hard

[Veigar Mid]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png12.png

Start: 2033.png3340.png

  • Stay away from his soldiers, and if he Q's them onto you, try to move out of their range as fast as possible.
  • Keep shoving the lane with your W and Q every so often while constantly auto attacking the wave. You want to CS as much as possible while keeping the minions in the middle of the lane.
  • Only try to poke if he gets too close to you. Avoid staying in the same spot for too long.
  • Watch out for his Ulti at level 6. He may try to drift towards you and then flash behind you and push you back towards his turret.
  • You may get the chance to kill him if you can land enough Qs on him.
  • This is one of the hardest matchups since he outranges you in basically every way.

VS

Bard

Medium
[Veigar Support]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png3.png

Start: 3303.png2003.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • When poking, don't go for extended trades. Bard's autos from his passives are pretty damaging.
  • Try to stand in positions where he can't set up his Q stun. Avoid getting too close to walls, minions or teammates.
  • If he tries to use his Magical Journey towards you, you can place your stun at the exit point to instantly stun anyone who goes through, and get free damage.
  • Once he gets his ult, just be conscious that he can save an ally by ulting them just before you burst.

VS

Blitzcrank

Hard
[Veigar Support]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png3.png

Start: 3303.png2003.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Keep minions between you and Blitz whenever he has grab up.
  • If he misses grab, go in for some poke. He can't punish you.
  • Try to keep side bushes warded so he can't surprise grab you or your ADC.
  • Be careful if you try to dive a blitz due to his ability to CC you and survive using his passive's shield.
  • If he grabs your ADC, try to stun their ADC so they can't put damage on your ally.

VS

Brand

Hard
[Veigar Mid]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png12.png

Start: 2033.png3340.png or 1056.png2003.png2003.png

  • Keep moving to avoid getting hit by his Pillar of Flame. It will chunk you.
  • If you get set ablaze stay behind your minions so he can't stun you with his Q.
  • I would get early boots against him which will help you dodge easier.
  • Use your Q and W to counter his wave clear.
  • If your jungler can setup a gank to pop his flash and then gank again, it is an easy kill. Without flash, he can't escape your stun.
  • Once you get ulti, you should have the ability to kill him if you have enough mana and can land your full combo when he's at 2/3rds health.
  • If you decide to go all in, use your flash to dodge his Q stun, and try to stay away from minions so he can't bounce his ult back towards you multiple times.

[Veigar Support]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png3.png

Start: 3303.png2003.png2003.png2003.png3340.png
  • Although it's uncommon, playing against Brand support is much like playing against him mid.
  • Everything above applies here, so just play against Brand as you would against him mid lane.(Of course you won't be able to solo kill him at level 6 though).
  • If he procs his passive on you, get away from your ADC, you don't want to accidentally damage him/her.
  • Once you hit 6, try to land a stun to kill him with your ADC. Without a reliable escape, he's helpless.

VS

Braum

Medium
[Veigar Support]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png3.png

Start: 3303.png2003.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Playing against Braum is a lot like playing against any other melee support. Use your range to your advantage and constantly poke.
  • Keep weaving in and out of minions to make it hard for him to land a Q on you.
  • He is pretty easy to catch in a stun so you should be able to damage him pretty easily with your ADC.
  • At level 6, watch out for his ulti which can knock you up and potentially secure a kill on you if you are out of position.
  • His W can block the first attack completely so when you go to burst him, try to hit him first with an auto attack before any other spell hits.

VS

Caitlyn

Hard
[Veigar Support]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png3.png

Start: 3303.png2003.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Stay far away. Her auto attack range + her Q out range your auto attacks.
  • Only go for quick poke with your Q and 1 auto if you get the chance. Try to poke her as she is last hitting a minion.
  • Her E will make it harder for you to stun her. I usually try to place it so that she has to instantly E to dodge it before the delay or risk getting stunned if she E's too late.
  • Don't face check bushes, she may have a trap there.
  • Remember to shield your ADC if she targets them with her ult (of course, assuming you have enough health to survive).
  • She's just as squishy as any other ADC, if you can catch her with a stun and hit your entire burst along with your ADC's, you can kill her easily.

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard
[Veigar Mid]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png12.png

Start: 2033.png3340.png

  • Do not fight level 1-6. If you want to damage her focus on dodging her Q first so she can't spam her E on you. Once she misses Q, go in for some poke and then back off.
  • Try to keep the wave in the middle of the lane, if you get pushed to  your turret, it will be hard to CS when she constantly has the ability to poke you.
  • When you hit 6, careful for the flash all in from her. If she lands her ult stun, you may die.
  • Investing in a negatron cloak early might be a good idea after getting a Lost Chapter.
  • Your best hope of solo killing her is landing a few Qs and then hopefully catching her with a stun to kill her. Otherwise wait for your jungler. Against good Casses, I try to farm and wait til group skirmishes begin to kill her

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy
[Veigar Top or Mid]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png (if top) or  4.png14.png (if mid)

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Cho's main weakness is susceptibility to constant poke. For him to succeed in lane, he has to be able to last hit without taking too much damage.
  • Focus on CSing while proccing Thunderlord's decree as often as you can using a combination of autos and Qs.
  • Keep moving so that it becomes harder for him to land his knockup. If he seems to be moving up to silence, just back off.
  • You'll probably eat a silence or two, but don't worry just retreat a bit and then resume poking / CSing after the silence is over.
  • You'll want to kill him before he gets too many stacks with his ulti. Either ask for a jungler gank or poke him low enough for you to kill yourself.
  • Cho isn't too tanky early game so it shouldn't be too hard to get a kill.

VS

Corki

Medium
[Veigar Support]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png3.png

Start: 3303.png2003.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Beware of Corki's early burst with his Q. The bomb's damage does a surprising amount when you don't have much MR.
  • Go in for harass once he has missed his Q or used it on minions. Without it, he lacks damage to return to you.
  • Avoid trying to stun with the edge of your E, you'll want to place it ahead of him in case he uses his Valkyrie to escape. Of course, if he already used it, use your stun normally.
  • As with other poke ADC's just don't get too close, and you should be fine.

VS

Darius

Medium
[Veigar Top]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Play against him like a more dangerous Cho'gath. Focus stacking your Q and whittling down his health with abilities and some auto attacks.
  • When you go to harass, don't stay in auto attack range for too long. Your auto attack range is only slightly longer than the pull range. If he pulls you in, he'll demolish you.
  • Use your W to your advantage. If you can secure multiple CS and hit him at the same time, do it. He doesn't have many ways to dodge if he's surrounded by minions blocking him.
  • In the event that he pulls you, just stay as close as possible and lay the edge of the stun on top of you, so that he can't hit the outer rim of his Q unless he walks backwards (away from you) or flashes past you.
  • Build Morello's over Athene's.

VS

Diana

Medium
[Veigar Top or Mid]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png (if top) or  4.png14.png (if mid)  or 4.png3.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Pre-6, keep poking her. She has no way to gap close on top of you so if you space it right, the only way she can damage you is with her Q.
  • Watch out for her E and W. If she gets in range to suck you in, she'll win the trade with her shield.
  • Once she hits level 6, beware. She will out damage you if she lands her Q on you and goes in with her ult.
  • You want to play this matchup much like an Akali matchup. Don't stay too close, and poke her down until she can't risk all-inning you.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium
[Veigar Top]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Tanky-ass bruiser who is OP on the current patch.
  • Basically a tankier Darius with more poke, sustain, but less burst damage.
  • Stay behind your minions or keep moving so that he can't hit cleavers.
  • If he runs at you, just drop your stun and harass him with some autos and a Q while he's trapped in the cage.
  • Once he's 6, good luck trying to kill him. His ult will just regen him back to full health.
  • Call your jungler over to kill him before level 6, shouldn't be too hard since he doesn't have any escapes.
  • Build Morello's over Athene's to counter his healing.

VS

Draven

Medium
[Veigar Support]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png3.png

Start: 3303.png2003.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Don't get in his auto attack range if he has axes up.
  • In order to harass effectively you'll need to poke him the moment he is auto attacking something else. This eliminates the risk of him chunking you with an axe.
  • When attempting to land your stun, try to place the edge on the location where his axe will drop.
  • Draven doesn't have much mobility so use it to your advantage when aiming your skills.
  • Be wary of his level 6. His ult adds another high damage ability to his skill set.

VS

Ekko

Medium

[Veigar Mid or Top]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png
Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Try to stand behind your minions. They will stop his Q from traveling further.
  • Poke him with auto attacks if he goes for last hits with his melee attacks.
  • Watch out for his E. You can stop the physical dash with your stun, but he can get through with the blink portion.
  • If you see him set up his W stun, just back off until he loses the shield. There's no point trying to fight him when he can just shield your damage.
  • Once he gets ult, it will be much harder to kill him. Try to get him low enough so that you can burst him while he is still stunned. Otherwise, the moment he is able to move he can dodge your burst with his ulti.
  • If you run exhaust. Use it if you know he is about to all in and put it on him once he blinks on top of you.

VS

Ezreal

Medium

[Veigar Mid}

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png12.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Stay behind minions to avoid getting hit by his Q.
  • Don't trade with him if he can land a Q and some auto attacks on you. You won't have the damage early game to beat him.
  • Unless the Ezreal is not paying attention, it is pretty much impossible to land a stun on him. He can just E or flash out before it hits him.
  • If you're trying to kill him, either get a gank, or use one of your other spells to bait out his E, and then place your stun accordingly.
  • Ezreal usually builds pretty squishy so you should be able to kill him later on.
  • Be careful of his ulti, if it hits you, it will chunk you.
  • Build Morello's over Athene's

[Veigar Support]

Summoner Spells: 4.png14.png or 4.png3.png

Start: 3303.png2003.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Everything from the matchup notes for Ezreal mid carries over.
  • If you're trying to catch him, Frostqueen's Claim's active can be helpful.
  • During a fight and if you ADC is low HP while you have sufficient health, use your body to block Ezreal's Qs.

VS

Fiora

Medium
[Veigar Top]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Focus on last hitting early on. Even if you get her low, she has a easy way to escape any all in with parry + Q + flash
  • You can occasionally poke her but you won't have much kill pressure unless she eats a lot of minion aggro.
  • Try to stay far away if the vitals are facing her. She'll play really aggressive.
  • When attempting to stun, place you E so that it'll account for her Q distance. If you place the edges too close, she'll be able to get out easily.
  • Only attempt to ult her when she's stunned or her parry is down. Any decent Fiora has the reaction time to parry your ult, so you must be careful.

VS

Fizz

Hard
[Veigar Mid]

Summoner Spells: 4.png21.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Your goal early is to stay reasonably healthy while poking him down so he can't all in you at 6. Use a combination of auto attacks and Qs to punish him for getting CS.
  • Levels 1 and 2 will be when you're safest so try to exert your advantage then.
  • Avoid attempting to stun him when he has E. It'll be useless and you'll just be punished for it.
  • You can play a bit more aggressively if his Q is on cool down. Without it, he has no way to get to you without using his E (which you can counter by placing the stun on yourself so he must land on it in order to hit you.
  • At 6 he can all in you even if you're close to full health so play safe and conservative unless you know he cannot kill you.

VS

Galio

Medium
[Veigar Mid]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Keep moving so it'll be hard for him to land his Q and E.
  • You have to play aggressively in the early game before he builds too much magic resist.
  • Avoid poking him when he uses his W. He'll just heal from your damage.
  • When attempting to land a stun, be aware he can use his E for a quick movespeed boost.
  • Be careful of the potential flash + ult combo. He can use it to set up an easy gank for the jungler.
  • It may be a good idea to build void staff directly after Morello's and Sorc Shoes.

VS

Gangplank

Medium
[Veigar Mid or Top]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Usually ends up being a farm lane since Veigar does not have much kill pressure.
  • Keep trying to poke him down while last hitting minions with your Q. It will be really hard to land your W since he can just cleanse your stun.
  • If he gets greedy and eats an orange for the heal, try to see if you can land any meaningful damage with your E + W or Q.
  • It will be very hard to kill a good GP, so just watch out for the barrel chains and stay even in farm.
  • If you are confident, you can try to mess up his barrel explosions by autoing the barrel right before he Qs it so he cannot explode it. (Very difficult since his Q travels faster than your auto attack, so the timing must be perfect).

VS

Garen

Easy
[Veigar Top]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Treat him like any immobile fighter. Poke aggressively using Q and autos to keep his health down.
  • Try not to let him regen too much from his passive. Force him to choose either to sacrifice CS or sacrifice the regen.
  • If he attempts to charge you with his Q, use your stun to deter him.
  • Don't waste your time poking him with spells when he uses his W. You'll just be wasting mana.
  • Just be aware, that if you get below 10% health you will die from his ult.

VS

Gnar

Medium
[Veigar Top]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Stay behind minions. His Q range is severely decreased after it hits the first target.
  • He will win any extended trade due to his W, so just stick with short bursts of poke.
  • Be careful of an all-in when he's about to transform. He can use his E before hand to bounce off a minion and jump on you. You can of course combat this with your stun, if you have the reaction time.
  • Keep moving when he transforms into mega Gnar so he can't land easy Qs or Ws on you.
  • If he wastes his Q and/or W in Mega form, punish him with Q and autos. and if you deem it appropriate, drop down a W too..
  • Stay away form walls when he has ult. If you get stunned, you'll take a lot of follow-up damage.

VS

Graves

Medium
[Veigar Top]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Stay behind minions. His auto attacks can't pass through them, so if you can use your minions to block, he can only use his Q and W to damage you.
  • Stay away from walls. The second half of his Q activates quicker if the first half collides with a wall.
  • Do not get in melee range. You will be eating a ton of damage from his auto attacks in conjunction with his abilities.
  • Be aware that his ulti has deceptively long range and high damage. At level 6 he can burst you down when you're at 1/2 health. Even if you flash away, he can ult to finish you off.

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

[Veigar Mid or Top]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • Will end up being a farm lane, just ensure that you don't lose too many minions to your turret when he pushes in the minions all the way.
  • Stay behind minions to avoid getting hit my his rockets, and keep moving so he can't grenade you.
  • With some AP, you can kill his turret with a single W, or alternatively an auto or two and a Q.
  • If given the opportunity, you can use drop your W so it lands on a turret and a minion simultaneously to counter push. (Even better if the W can kill both the minion and the turret).
  • A good heimer will simply want to push you in and back so if you want to get a kill, try to ask for a jungle gank.
  • Focus on getting every CS possible while preventing your turret from dying to minion push. You heavily outscale Heim once you get some items.

VS

Irelia

Hard
[Veigar Top]

Summoner Spells: 4.png12.png

Start: 1056.png2003.png2003.png3340.png

  • If you let her farm up and build MR items, you'll have a hard time. Best chance of winning lane is to ask for jungle ganks and set them up with your stun.
  • Avoid standing next to low health minions. She can easily reset her Q by jumping onto them, and then can Q on your for a free engage.
  • Best chance of surviving in lane is to save your stun for whenever she decides to jump on you, and drop it down so that she is forced to disengage.
  • If you let her all in you, she will win every trade with her stun and life steal.
  • Let her push you in, even if it means missing a few CS. If you let the wave get past the mid-point of the lane, it's super easy for her to deny you CS or kill you outright.
  • Either push the wave all the way and back / roam, or freeze it near your turret.

Matchup Notes WIP & Regarding Bot Lane Matchups Back to Top

Matchup Notes and Strategies for All Champions are Works in Progress and will be updated periodically by the alphabet. Just wanted to put down general difficulty so you can know roughly how hard it is to play against the specific champ.

Note: Because of the fact that botlane is 2v2, matchup difficulty can vary depending on the combination of the ADC and Support that you're against. Thus in the Matchup section, I measured the difficulty based on my experience generally playing against that specific Champion regardless of his ally.

Pros & Cons of Veigar Back to Top

Pros

  • High single target damage through his burst combo
  • Versatile stun which can be used for zoning, setting up poke, peeling, locking down key targets, or setting up picks. Can easily turn a team fight around if you hit multiple targets with it.
  • Counters high AP Compositions through his ulti and his ability to selectively burst which ever target he wants
  • Infinitely scaling AP through his Q Farming and Passive
  • Even if you get behind in lane, as long as your enemy keeps building AP, you still have the potential to kill them with your Ult and burst combo.
  • If played support, most people are inexperienced with how Veigar plays 2v2 so you can catch them off-guard
  • Can steal neutral objectives (Red and Blue Buffs, Baron and Dragon) using his q + w so that they hit at the same time, out damaging smite.
  • Thrives against low-mobility champions since he can easily setup a stun
  • It's always fun to one-shot people

Cons

  • Squishy and low mobility means tanks and bruisers which can survive his stun + burst combo can easily rush him
  • Susceptible to AD Assassins like Talon and Zed early game
  • Skill-shot-based (You must land your Q, W and E to deal damage)
  • Weak against tank compositions
  • Countered by Banshee's Veil, Quicksilver Sash, and Mercury Treads
  • Somewhat weak early game.
  • Vulnerable to ganks if stun is on cooldown.

The Veigod Mentality Back to Top

When playing Veigar regardless of what lane you decide to pick, there are certain things that you must think about when playing him.

  1. Like Veigar's physical size, your HP bar is tiny. Value every bit of HP you have and don't needlessly take damage, even if it comes at the cost of your team mates taking it for you. Your goal is to deal as much damage as possible and the best way of doing that is staying alive.
  2. Don't be afraid of running away. Use your movement speed to your advantage and if people keep chasing you, throw Qs back towards them and try to land some Ws. You might be able to even catch them off guard with a stun and then burst them.
  3. Don't overstep your bounds in lane. Remember, you're the Veigod, and you don't need to win in CS or get early kills to be effective later on in the game. Try to salvage as many last hits as possible in lane while applying some pressure. THIS MEANS DON'T JUST FARM YOUR Q IN LANE. IF YOU DO THIS, YOUR ASKING TO GET PRESSURED ALL OF LANING PHASE WITHOUT APPLYING ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR LANE OPPONENT. If you think you can 100% kill them then do it, but don't risk getting ganked or getting killed in return.
  4. If your teammates are stupidly getting themselves killed, don't follow them to death. Try to determine which decisions are smart, and if some aren't, try to dissuade your teammates from committing. If they don't listen, screw em, let them die, and try to do something productive, like taking a turret or taking a neutral objective.
  5. If your opponent is stupid and underestimates your damage, once you stun them, just kill them. No mercy.
  6. Better to selfishly take kills early game even if your jungler can secure it. The more kills you get early, the more damage you can do later on. (Of course there are exceptions. However if the maximum amount of kills your team can get in a skirmish is 1, then by all means try to take the kill). NOTE. THIS PIECE OF ADVICE ONLY APPLIES TO SOLO LANE VEIGAR. DON'T INTENTIONALLY TRY TO STEAL YOUR ALLIES' KILLS AS SUPPORT.
  7. Know when to save your ult in teamfights and when to use it. It is your main source of burst, and picking the right target can instantly change a fight.

Ability Combos & Some Small Tricks with Veigar's Kit Back to Top

Note: Auto Attacks are optional, but will improve damage. In order to fit in the auto attacks reliably you have to cancel the auto-animation just as the missile hits them by casting the next ability in the combo.

Typical Harass Combo

veigareventhorizon.png (stun)> veigardarkmatter.png > [Auto Attack] > veigarbalefulstrike.png > [Auto Attack] (If they are still within range)
  • Use as a way to get someone low enough for you to kill after you get ult.
  • May be enough to kill squishy targets once you get a good amount of AP.
  • Don't spam this too often unless you have blue buff or a decent amount of mana regen. You'll quickly run out of mana otherwise.
  • If you have Thunderlod's Decree, this will do even more damage, since W + Q + and auto attack is enough to proc the mastery.

One-shot Combo

veigareventhorizon.png (stun)> veigardarkmatter.png > [Auto Attack] > veigarbalefulstrike.png > veigarprimordialburst.png [Auto Attack] (If they are still within range or are not dead)
  • Can kill squishy targets easily with some AP.
  • You ideally want to Q before you ult in order to maximize the ult damage (as of patch 6.9 it now does % missing health so R should always go last)
  • If you don't have many ranks in your stun, it might be preferable to Q first before Ult, so that the skill shot is guaranteed to land when they are stunned and then if they dash or flash away, your Ult will follow them.
  • If you need ignite to secure the kill, just put it on them whenever you like. However if they have heal, put it on them right after you W so they can't heal during your burst. If you're lucky, they'll panic and heal anyway, which will be useless.

Tips and Tricks to Land Your Abilities Easier

Change your Keybindings

  • Use quickcast for W and R. These don't require that much precision so normal cast and quick cast with indicator isn't necessary. You want to quick cast W so it comes out as fast as possible when you stun someone. Every second counts.
  • For your Q, use quickcast or quickcast with indicator. Speed isn't as important, but it might be helpful.
  • E is up to you. I like to quickcast with indicators since it helps me line up the edges of the cage on top of people when they exit things like Zhonya's or Guardian's Angel. Of course, if you can learn to use quickcast without any sort of indicators that'd be great, but I don't have the muscle memory or the time to learn how to do that 100% accurately.

Use your W to Land Your Stun

(This may seem counter intuitive, but it should theoretically work)

  1. First throw your W on top of someone.
  2. As soon as they begin moving in a direction to dodge, place the edge of your stun on top of their intended direction. At worst, you'll miss both your W and your Stun, but they'll still be trapped inside the cage. At best, they either are forced to eat the W or stun or even both.
  • I don't have the reaction time to do this myself consistently, but if you do, give this a try, you might find that it's a good way to land your stun or W.
  • You can alternatively use E first and then W and it should work. It all depends on the place of your abilities so that the opponent is stuck between the two.

Phases of the Game (Solo Lane) Back to Top

Early Game & Laning

  • Focus on last hitting. For every wave, try to farm at least 3 minions with your Q. You can use your auto's to manage the creeps' health as they get whittled down by your minions, and then use your Q to pick up two kills. The most optimal way of farming in lane is shooting the Q so that it goes through a minion and hits your enemy or vice versa.
  • If their jungler ganks, in most cases, try to put the cage around yourself, or in a manner so that both the enemy jungler and your lane opponent will get stunned if they chase you. If they try to dive you. Try to stun the person that is targeted by your turret and see if you can get a kill off of it.
  • If you're against a melee opponent like Akali, or Diana who lack gap closers before 6, you can be more aggressive and harass them every time they try to go for CS. Always try to weave some autos into your harass if you have the chance so they will take more damage. With the addition of Thunderlord's Decree, try to get 3 pieces of damage in quick succession for even better poke.
  • Try to keep the minion wave away from your turret. Veigar has some difficulty farming under turret so you want to keep the wave clsoe to the middle of the lane. In top lane, I try to freeze it in that sweet spot between the middle and the turret
  • If you push the lane to their turret and don't have to back, you can take Razorbeaks right after for more gold.
  • Your goal in the early game is to farm as much as possible while trying to harass your opponent whenever they cannot retaliate.
  • If your jungler needs help (i.e. the enemy jungler is in your jungle), only go to help if he is somewhere near your lane (don't go all the way to gromp or to the krugs).
  • Always try to poke your opponent down a little bit before you try to kill them with your full combo + ignite.

Mid Game & Roaming

  • Only roam when you have pushed your own lane out, If you leave the minion wave in the middle and roam, your lane opponent can quickly push it in, making you miss a lot of CS, or they could even take your turret while you're gone.
  • Your goal when roaming is to kill an enemy or take an objective with the help of your team
  • You should have an upgraded trinket by level 11. Use it along with a pink ward to maintain vision around the map. You might be able to catch someone off guard and pick them off.
  • When ganking another lane, try to find the best position to catch the enemy in a stun, to setup a kill. If there is no kill available, try to take the turret by zoning the enemy off of the turret with your E and W.
  • If you team engages in a skirmish around Dragon, try to position yourself in the safest position when fighting. Veigar is vulnerable to flanks when his stun is down.

Late Game & Teamfighting

  • When lategame rolls around stay near your teammates in case the enemy team tries to fight. Veigar isn't a split pusher.
  • Keep wards up around the map so you know if they are trying to make an attempt at an objective
  • When your team starts a fight, stay behind your front line. You can poke with your Q and stun any potential targets to setup the kill for your team.
  • In terms of target priority, try to kill the person that does the highest amount of damage on their team. I often prioritize the fed ADC over the mid laner even if their mid laner is AP. Veigar can one-shot any squishy once he gets some items.
  • Don't be afraid to throw naked Ws. In a hectic teamfight, people won't pay attention and will often step into the meteor if you aim it right.
  • If your ADC is fed, don't be afraid of using your abilities to peel. If you can keep that fed Vayne alive by insta-killing that bruiser or assassin on her back, you will most likely win the fight.
  • If worse comes to worst and you're in a situation where your team has to steal the Baron / Dragon, use your Q and W so that the Q hits at the same time the W lands in order to steal. You will outdamage the jungler's smite every time if you do it right.

Phases of the Game (Support) Back to Top

Early Game & Laning & Roaming

  • Focus on poking. Your job as support is to pressure your lane opponents while helping your ADC get as much farm as possible.
  • If your ADC can't reach a minion to last hit it, don't be afraid to take it yourself with a Q or auto attack. Better that someone gets the gold than no one.
  • You can use your stun to zone off the opponent, allowing your ADC to temporarily move closer to farm. Don't do this too often or you'll run out of mana quickly.
  • Just play Veigar like any other typical support. Keep side bushes and the river warded while going to help other lanes / your jungler if needed.
  • Don't be afraid to go for the kill at level 6, Support Veigar does a surprising amount of damage with ignite.
  • Only roam when you know your ADC is going to be safe without you. Otherwise, you're just letting your ally die while hoping you get something out of leaving the lane.
  • When roaming, try to go from the enemy's flanks, and use your stun to either pop the target's flash or kill them. You goal when roaming is to apply pressure to that specific lane, allowing your ally to get ahead.

Mid Game & Skirmishing

  • As a support your responsibility is to maintain vision around the map, and help your team get objectives and kills through vision control and CC. Therefore, buy pink wards and always have 3 sight wards on the map.
  • If you see the chance, use your stun to set up a pick for the rest of your team. With mobility boots, and your other movement speed boosts (from runes and masteries) you should be able to catch almost anyone on their team.
  • Play the mid game much like how you would play solo lane Veigar, except play more to help your teammates than yourself (i.e. if you see a chance to save your ADC, even if you may die, do it).

Late Game & Teamfighting

  • Teamfighting as support veigar is much like solo lane veigar except there is a larger emphasis placed on landing your stun. Unlike solo lane veigar, you don't have the damage to compensate for your mistake.
  • As before, you can peel for your allies with your stun or use it aggressively, it honestly depends on the situation.
  • Don't forget to use your active items! For example, Frost Queen's Claim can slow your enemies to setup an easier stun, or it can be used after the stun to slow them afterwards for more followup.

Thanks for Reading!

I may not be the highest elo Veigar player, but I have developed a good idea on how to play and how to build him the proper way. There aren't that many good guides for him on LoLKing and those that are "good", have builds that I don't agree with. I won't say Veigar is necessarily the most optimal champion in some situations, nor is he the most effective at his role (Annie and Syndra do similar jobs and have better laning phases), but he is definitely one of the most enjoyable champions to play once you learn how to play him properly.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop it down in the comment section or friend me on League (IGN: Easley Pale on NA), and ask directly.
