Summoner Spells Back to Top

12.png: to have more map pressure and to go back to lane much faster. Highly recommended!

14.png: when you need the extra damage and want a more dueling laning phase BUT at the cost of defense/utility! (It's really tryhard, but maybe - I don't know - that fits to your playstyle :D)

21.png: can safe your ass against very aggressive all-in champs, like 7.png131.png ...

3.png: only versus certain matchups. I, personally, am not a big fan of this summoner spell, because i believe that 'barrier' is a way more efficient against something like a 238.png. Most people are using this for assassins though.

1.png: I almost never take 'cleanse', but there are some matchups you can think about it, especially for champions who need to cc you to kill you (103.png1.png99.png, ...)

6.png: a good choice, when you wanna have extra mobility to kite better, to stick on mobile champions, to survive ganks easier or to even to roam better, it's a very flexible summoner.

My Thoughts

Well, even though that are all very good summoners, I only go for 12.png 99.999% of the games (Matchup doesn't matter for me), cause it fits my playtyle perfectly.

Update Patch 6.15: I just discovered 21.png as summoner spell. So what does this mean ? I took it in annoying matchups like 7.png134.png, ... and got a pretty big fan now. At the moment I go Barrier most of the games, concerning the fact I got counterpicked.

Update Patch 6.24: I never used 3.png, now i tried it against assassin matchups like 238.png or 105.png,... It's amazing how easy that matchups become with that summoner. I can give you the advice to just take it.

Update Patch 8.4: Since the new runes got implemented in patch 7.24, you got the possibility to go spellbook and change summoner spells ingame. That means, that you can start with any summoner you want (the summoner spells that fit your playstyle).
I, personally, go 7.png very often, but also 21.png, and exhaust versus most assassin matchups. When I expect to get much dmg in lane (e.g. 101.png,... ), I find myself going 11.png. Here is the deal: When you take smite and purchase 1039.png instead of dorans ring, you can heal up a lot in lane, especially in the early game. Just W at the raptors, while being in lane, hitting in the middle of them to make sure to hit every single target with your W, and you will see yourself healing up an insane ammount of health. Just try it out. It is amazing.
In higher elo, you wanna do this without your opponent seeing you using your W, because they will abuse your W cooldown and push you in immediately.

New Runes Back to Top

Veigar vs easy matchups

This page lets you have a convenient lane versus matchups, that aren't that hard.
Alternatively you can go:

Celerity.png?width=32, when you know, that your build will include 45% CDR ( 3165.png3157.png3102.png or 3158.png )

Scorch.png?width=32, for more pressure in the early game

Perfect%20Timing.png?width=32, when needed

8275.png?width=32, when you miss the old stormraider's surge mastery, like I do ;)

Veigar vs heavy matchups

These runes increase your chance of surviving a very hard lane, or even winning that lane. You got more survivability, more overall sustain, and a spellbook, allowing you to change your sums.
Alternatively you can go:

Magical%20Footwear.png?width=32, if you don't need Zhonyas

Biscuit%20Delivery.png?width=32, if you need the sustain (for example versus 101.png)

Celestial%20Body.png?width=32 for even more sustain (when you wanna tilt a 101.png)

Nullifying%20Orb.png?width=32, if you really need the magic shield (e.g. 134.png, ...)

Scorch.png?width=32, if you wanna trade a hard lane, which can be pressured in the first levels (e.g. meelees like 238.png)

Transcendence.png?width=32, if you need the CDR

8275.png?width=32, when you miss the old stormraider's surge mastery, like I do ;)

Veigar (Test)

This runepage is for stomping your opponnent on lane, should not be used versus a hard lane, because it is quite tryhard. I am testing this page for myself at the moment.
Alternatively you can go:

Celerity.png?width=32, for more movement speed/AP

Gathering%20Storm.png?width=32, for better late game scaling

Waterwalking.png?width=32, for roams and objective control (better in high elo)

8275.png?width=32, when you miss the old stormraider's surge mastery, like I do ;)

Masteries Back to Top

  • This is is my page of Veigar, which is really good versus any enemy team.
  • You also can go 5 points in Meditation or Merciless, when you want more Damage or more mana sustain. That is personal preference.
  • You better take the Stormraider's Surge instead of Thunderlord's Decree in the Cunning Path. This will allow you a more defensive way to assassinate a target a the cost of some damage but hey - Veigar's dealing more than enough damage, don't worry :D. Good versus an enemy team with hard CC . There are many times you have to go deep into fight to assassinate a target, and then you have to position yourself in the backline again immediately. Stormraider's Surge offers you the bonus movement speed to do this much easier.Without this in your bag, you have even more burst damage BUT you are an easy victim to CC (oh hi, 89.png).

Versus a heavy AD or AP lane (especially in high elo), you might consider going a more defensive mastery page, like I do.
Go 0-18-12 then. In the cunning tree, you always wanna have 5 points in mana sustain, since you are forced to farm a lot of CS only with your abilities and consequently in the exchange of a lot of mana. Otherwise you would take too much damage by your opponnent abusing your greedyness to CS. That is the only change you wanna do in this mastery path. In the resolve tree, you should take:
  • Unyielding, cause it grants you more MR or Armor, when you buy a 3157.png or 3102.png and recovery does not give you much health regen. in my opinion.
  • Siegemaster, cause opressive matchups will push you under tower and harass you while you try to cs.
  • Veteran's Scars, cause Veigar has not any form of lifesteal and shield.
  • Fearless, cause it can make trades much better than they would be. Also reduces damage versus champions, who try to harass you a lot (e.g. 61.png,134.png,103.png,69.png,101.png,...). Especially dps champs suffer from that mastery.

You may notice, there are different options for your Mastery Page. Just try to discover what's good for you personally, if you don't trust me, which would be really sad ;(. ... No, I'm not crieing, I'm .. I'm ... I give up 3070.png3070.png

This is my skill order and I'm very successfull with it.

Further explanation:

-Always skill Q with Lv 1!

-Skill W second to avoid getting pushed too hard or to farm under tower easily. Skill E second, when you are playing  against something like 7.png or you are in danger of getting ganked/towerdived early by aggressive junglers.

-When you can't continue maxing Q, which always has to be your first max of course, put another skill point on E.

-Skill/Max your Ult whenever you can of course.

-Feel free to change your skill order, if you aren't a fan of mine.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Core Items

Purchase tear for mana sustain by setting up your late game scaling at the same time.
Rush Rabadons for an early powerspike, buy Void for total penetration.
complete your tear, when it's full stacked.
Sorcery boots for more dmg, ionian boots if CDR is needed.

Situational Items

Banshees versus heavy AP, Zhonyas versus heavy AD.
More Dmg ? Ok, here we go.
Ah, you want some defensive options ? You are welcome :)

1056.png: take this, when you feel that preaseason 6 changes ruined his early mana pool (like i do). Just absolute core on almost every mid laner.

1082.png: you also can purchase this item. You can build Mejais with this later on, if you need to. Upgrade this to 3041.png when you notice that you won't die a lot because the enemy jungler is not strong in ganking for example or when you're just fed. It also is a good item versus Champions poking u very hard.

3020.png: more magic pen. = much more dmg. Essential for many ap mid laners. Of course, you can go 3158.png as well, when you need/want the CDR.

3089.png: With this item you'll get a massive powerspike with Veigar. Once you have this, you can oneshot almost every target. Since patch 8.4 you can simply rush it almost every time.

3135.png: Extremely strong choice to even oneshot some tanks in combination with other stuff. You do not have to buy this that early, just purchase it when some opponnents are too tanky to deal with.

3102.png: Put this in your pocket when you are playing versus heavy AP or a fed AP opponent, to just mitigate some dmg, block an ability and to reduce the danger of being oneshotted yourself.

3157.png: very good in turning a fight seeming very impossible, when it's used correctly. It's also surprisingly effective to rush versus AD mids.

3100.png: You won't believe me, but this item is pretty OP on Veigar. I, personally, tested it and it's just funny to see your opponnents losing almost half of their lives by a simple autoattack (with over thousand AP). Nice to pick up as last item, when you want more dmg, need the CDR and maybe aren't focused that hard.

3285.png: A nice last item pick up as well, when you just want more dmg. You only have to notice that you will not have a good defense in buying dmg items as last option. You will need to position yourself even better than with defensive items (you'll need a good positioning anyway).

3165.png: You can also purchase this as last item for more magic pen.

3001.png: Very good option to survive a lane, you have trouble with ( maybe something like 105.png). This item lets you simply take more dmg before dieing, that means you are more resistant to others' dmg. Its passive also grants you and your team a little bit more magic dmg.

3083.png: Very good defensive item choice, cause of its CDR and health boost, which contains whole 800 health.

3907.png: This item also could be very usefull on Veigar, because it grants you a movement speed and ap buff for  afew seconds. Also offers 10% movement speed as stat, and movement speed is really good on Veigar.

----------------------My favourite Builds -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the end, you have to decide what you build with Veigar. This is the best build for Veigar in my PERSONAL opinion. I, mostly, build 1056.png>>1001.png>>3070.png>>(3157.png/3102.png)>>3020.png>>3089.png>>3003.png>>3135.png>>3083.png/3742.png/3285.png/3100.png

Special Build Orders:
When above:

3070.png>3020.png>1058.png>3089.png/3041.png>3135.png

When behind or versus enemies building early MR:

3070.png>3020.png>3135.png

When having problems with AP-opponnents:

3070.png>1001.png1033.png>3102.png/3001.png

When having problems with AD-opponnents:

3070.png>1001.png3191.png>3157.png

Pro Tip:

When u are in the ultimate late game and have full build, sell your boots and get 3742.png instead...
You will see it's magic, i promise (It's about 20 MS faster than boots, when it's full stacked. You just have to care about not autoattacking someone when you are in danger. It also gives you more tankyness as well and you really dont notice the damage which is lost by selling the Magic Pen. Boots ;) ).

VS

Ahri

Medium

Summoner Spell:

1.png take it, when you have problems with dodging her charm.

21.png deny her burst and counter her potential ignite.

12.png when you do not need more defense.

First of all, never ever get hit by her charm. That is so important by winning this matchup. Pre 6 avoid getting poked by her stronger aa's and her abilities. You can trade her back with veigarbalefulstrike.png's. Focus on farming.

Post 6 stay near of your tower and never set a cage when her ult is up, except you are at your tower and she tries to poke you while you are pushed in. Just do NOT overextend.

Also take care off the opponnent's jungler, she can easily engage you with ult charm and a flash. So stay safe whenever the jungler's position is unknown. With safe I mean staying under tower. You can freeze the lane a little bit, when the minions are close to towerrange (not in!); That will allow you to farm very safely and effectively, you can do this in any matchup by the way.

Once you stunned her and you have 3165.png + 3020.png, you can kill her, except she bought magic resistance.

VS

Anivia

Easy

Summoner Spell:

12.png helps you to survive lane, when you cannot dodge her abilities for some reason. Also pretty standard for Veigar.

21.png in my opinion not useful versus Anivia, but the better summoner spell in general, if the opponnents' team has a lot of dmg for you to fear.

Anivia is a quite easy matchup as long as you dodge her Q's. For the case you have trouble with dodging them, run movement speed quints in your runes. Play as careful as possible, because she can crystallize.png you and set up an easy gank for her jungler.

Post 6 you have to keep on playing carefully to avoid getting an R+E combo in your face, which deals a lot of damage. Keeping a little bit of distance to her also helps with dodging her Q's by the way. You want to prioritize farming as good as possible. Cause of her egg you cant kill her in the early unless you have a very aggressive jungler with you (e.g. Lee Sin). I suggest, that you never ever use your ult in a 1v1 szenario to finish her off when she has her egg. Of course her egg has higher cooldown than your ult, but in my opinion it is simply more worth to roam bot with your R, than getting her egg out and waiting till the CD of your ult is gone.

VS

Annie

Medium

Summoner Spell:

21.png survive her early oneshot burst.

12.png when you do not need more defense.

1.png good option to prevent her stunning you with her non-skillshots (#nosalt).

Annie has a very high auto-attack range, so expect to eat some of these during the first levels. Do not underestimate her dmg pre 6! When you don't play carefully, she can kill you very early, especially when she has ignite. Your veigareventhorizon.png + veigardarkmatter.png + veigarbalefulstrike.png combo outranges hers, use that to your advantage (even though it is quite hard against annie to do it on maximum range). Be careful when she has her stun up, she might use 4.png + stun for an easy gank of her jungler.

Post-6 both of you have kill potential, but yours is more skillshot based so this lane can be a pain if you don't react fast enough. If Annie uses her combo and you have still around 300 hp then you can return her some damage with your own full combo. Also her lack of mobility can be abused by simply asking the jungler for help, while you let her push, farming under tower.

Versus Annie an early 1057.png is also recommended. After/Before building morellos, you should upgrade it to 3102.png. Also the movement speed, MR rune page is very recommended.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Medium

Summoner Spell:

12.png in my opinion you need no other summoner spell versus him.

This matchup is not that hard to deal with. He can easily be kept inside of your E and is pretty immobile in lane anyway. The thing, which can make this matchup annoying, is, that he will just shove in the waves (by the way he can do that with lv 1 already thanks to his aurelionsolw.png) and roam, once his aurelionsole.png is up. When you don't play carefully, he also can harass you with his damage-per-second aurelionsolw.png. So, you need to find the key of depushing the wave by hitting minions a lot or even veigardarkmatter.png-ing them, while you are not in range of his aurelionsolw.png.

Post 6, you want to stay more at your side of mid lane, because he can just engage you with his aurelionsolr.png (which also is helping his jungler to gank). Once he is inside of your cage or directly stunned, trade him with veigardarkmatter.png+veigarbalefulstrike.png and backoff. Continue this, until he is about half life or less - and of course as far as your mana pool is more than enough so that you are able to cast one complete rotation of spells. (Remember: you do NOT have to stun him, just let him be inside of your veigareventhorizon.png and cast a W in the center of it.) Is he low enough, you blow him with your full rotation.

If he considers to walk up to lane with his aurelionsole.png+aurelionsolq.png combo, just place your stun exactly into the direction of him moving. Notice, that you have to cast it quite closely to him, so that he has not much time to react to it by just stop moving. Do you have 3165.png+3020.png and he has no MR, it is a free kill for you.

Tell your team as early as possible, when he is missing, even when he is just lv 2. You also might consider to counterroam him, while giving up some farm or TPing.

VS

Azir

Medium

Summoner Spell:

12.png he will force you out of lane. TP is a must there! When you do not take it, you will get far behind in cs and experience. Thus, changes are quite high, you are useless.

At level 1, you can farm very aggressively, even trade him back, while you stay away from his soldiers. At level 2, this matchup starts to become aids. You even have to care about last hitting minions with a max range Q, because he can still move his soldiers to you, while you use your Q, therefore harassing you hard. An early 1057.png is really important on this matchup. You need MR and you also need to purchase 2033.png, as early as possible. To sum up, pre 6 is you having a hard time. Also the movement speed, MR rune page is very recommended.

Post 6, it won't get any better, just make sure to farm so much as possible, stay deep by your turret and care for his shurima shufle with his ult, eventually combined with flash. He can easily insec you like that, and therefore open ganks for his jungler. Once you have 3165.png + 3020.png, you have a very good kill potential on him. When he is in your stun, go for it. But do NOT waste your ultimate, when he has barrier/heal up, except he is already half life.

VS

Brand

Easy

Summoner Spell:

12.png he can force you out of lane, if you haven't high dodging skills. If so, take it to prevent him from doing this.

21.png you also can take this, when you just wanna be safer in general, for example when the enemy team can easily gapclose to you (e.g. 254.png)

This matchup depends on the skill of Brand and your ability to dodge skillshots. His main damaging tool is his brandfissure.png, and if you can dodge it (which is not that easy like it sounds) you can safely farm your veigarbalefulstrike.png. If you can't dodge his skillshots, he will zone you hard and make you miss a lot of cs and force you back. Take care about the relatively high range of his aa's to not get hit by many of them. As always, focus on farming. You also can trade him with some veigarbalefulstrike.png's. At lvl 6 try not to stay too close to your minions because his R will hit you multiple times and you will likely die. When he is less than half life and has no MR, you can definitely kill him after you managed to stun him.

His weakness, however, is his lack of mobility. So, do not be afraid to set a cage on him, whenever you wanna deal some dmg to him. Alternatively, you can ask the jungler to gank him.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Summoner Spell:

12.png when you do not need more defense.

21.png to deny some of her cassiopeiaq.png+cassiopeiae.png combo.

6.png to get fast out of her spam, to catch her up since cassio players almost ever take ghost as well, and of course to survive ganks easier.

At level 1 you can trade her with your Q, and depending on what she skilled also trade her with some aa's: Did she skill her cassiopeiaq.png ? Then you just need to dodge it (much easier with movement speed quints in your runes) and you can trade her with your veigarbalefulstrike.png and your aa's. Did she skill cassiopeiae.png ? Then just poke her with veigarbalefulstrike.png and stay away from her aa range. When she reaches lv 2, stay away from her! That does not mean that you cannot Q her on max range, you even should dmg her, because you are waiting for lv 6.

Post 6 both of you have kill pressure, but when she is already low by your Q poke (less than half life), you nuke her with a full combo. Make sure to dodge her ult. You can simply do this by stepping one step away when you see the R animation.

You will deal more damage than her in short trades. So don't stay too long because the cassiopeiatwinfang.png spam will completely destroy you. But that will also finish her mana extremely quickly early on, which can be an advantage as well. This lane has become a deadly lane, therefore not losing CS while trading back with Cassio will be a nice challenge for testing your skill in playing Veigar.

VS

Corki

Medium

Summoner Spell:

12.png when you do not need more defense.

21.png also a good option to be more safe in general and to counter his high burst when needed.

Corki has a nice harass tool with his Q, but you should be able to trade a little bit back with your veigarbalefulstrike.png. But watch out for his agressiveness. He can be surprisingly bursty and also trade with you and back off immediately with his carpetbomb.png (which is pretty annoying, cause you aren't able to deal good dmg to him). The most common problem you will have is placing the stun without him using W to get away. If he engages on you with his W, just kite. The carpetbomb.png has more cooldown than your veigareventhorizon.png, you can abuse that (his W has a CD of 20 sec at rank 1, your E has 18 sec without CDR -> you have about a 2-3 second window to abuse that).

Post 6 he will use a lot of rockets, try not to get hit by many of them. In general, just keep a little bit of a distance to him. Also, avoid getting pushed under tower, because that opens up the opportunity to him of harassing you a lot easier with his Q and missilebarrage.png.

Your other problem in this matchup is, that he can roam so well, once he has collected his package (1v1-ing him with package is very hard as well). Let your team immediately know, when he leaves mid. When you are above him, follow his roam.

Your last problem is his potential 3155.png-rush. You simply won't be able to kill him with your combo, while he can oneshot you easily, especially when he got 3078.png. You might consider to rush a 3135.png after picking 3802.png to nuke him down much easier.

In teamfights, if you see him in range, kill him. He will need to be a little closer to your front line to shred your front line's armor, so it's likely. If he stays far away focus ADC instead.

VS

Diana

Hard

Summoner Spell:

21.png the one and only option to survive her burst.

12.png quite risky, you have no real combat summoners when taking TP, but hey we are playing Veigar, who always wants to have TP if possible :D.

This girl will be durable enough to survive your burst, and she will burst you easily. Sounds pretty unfair, but it is reality. Therefore, 3001_32.png is highly recommended. You think it cannot be worse ? Well, than I have to dissapoint you: Additionally, she will almost always rush 3001.png, which means for you, that she is unkillable. Thus, you only have the opportunity to ask your jungler for assistance.

Whenever you play versus Diana, you need to dodge her dianaarc.png. That is a good step into the right direction to win this matchup. Without her dianaarc.png on you, she only can ult you once (which often is enough though x( ). The thing is, she has a pretty low CD on it, which means for you not to get into a longer fight (around 5 secs).

The best thing you can do, is abusing her pre 6 with aa's and veigarbalefulstrike.png's, while dodging her dianaarc.png's (which isn't that hard, since her Q always comes from the right side of her position -> step into the right direction of your position or a little forward). Also, try to outfarm her, using the advantage of being ranged and not melee like her.

Post 6, this matchup is very very hard. Her ult has a pretty low CD, even without CDR and her dianaarc.png. She might engage you with her ult and burst you with the other abilities just to harass you. When she manages to do this combo twice, you are dead. When she is in your stun or directly stunned, you are out of danger for the duration of your cage wall. You can damage her than and back off immediately. She may even be able to towerdive you with her dianaorbs.png shield and ult reset. You have to keep that in mind, because you can use this to your advantage. All you wanna do is keeping your veigareventhorizon.png and stun her or get her in the inside of it. Sometimes you can bait her with 21.png in the package. That means you can force her to dive you and then use your barrier at the right time.

VS

Ekko

Easy

Summoner Spell:

12.png in my opinion you do not need more defense against Ekko.

This guy deals good damage even without his ultimate, and when he hits 6 it can become dangerous. Why? Because he could potentially dive you under tower. Care about following stuff:

Position yourself aside to your minion wave, do not stand between your minions, because when you do, it's possible for Ekko to harass you and farm at the same time. Try to use your veigarbalefulstrike.png so, that it farms one minion and harasses him. If that is going to put you in a bad spot, try to autoattack different minions constantly and veigarbalefulstrike.png to get double stacks. Always play according to how he plays, because holding the lane in the middle is essential in this matchup. If Ekko starts using his ekkoq.png to deal damage to your minion wave, autoattack the wave all the time to not get pushed into tower. Getting pushed to tower is a bit dangerous after 6 because Ekko can easily dive you with his jungler as you become a sitting duck watching him to escape with his ultimate. However, do not push too much, his W can shock you when you are far away from your turret. Whenever he uses his ekkoq.png for minions try to punish him with an veigareventhorizon.png + veigardarkmatter.png + veigarbalefulstrike.png combo. But make sure that you do not fail it as mana is precious, and retreat ASAP, do not even move in for an autoattack. If he gets the chance to dash towards you you will get chunked hard. Alternatively to the E+W+Q combo, you can just cast a single Q. When you go in for the kill, make sure to ult him when he is in melee range. i never saw an Ekko, who could react that fast to ult and counter yours like this. The thing is, your veigarr.png comes up so fast, that you could call it "instant dmg". His ekkow.png is very easy to predict. Whenever he wanna cast this ability, he tries to get out of your vision (moving behind or in a bush). For the case he activates it inside of your vision, you see the animation. All you gotta do, is to run backwards nothing else.

Don't worry: Pre 6, this matchup is surprisingly easy. Just abuse him with Q's and even with aa's when he has no ekkoe.png up. If he buys 3157_32.png, be careful with the usage of your R and keep track of it's cooldown. If he uses it to negate your Ultimate once, the next time your Ult comes off, 3157.png will still be on CD. (It's even better with CDR, oh man, I love CDR <3). If he decides to purchase MR somehow, keep in mind that you cannot oneshot him anymore. Without MR, this guy is really squishee and you can easily nuke him, especially with items. 3165.png could eventually be enough to nuke him with a full combo plus an other Q.

VS

Fizz

Hard

Summoner Spell:

3.png must-have in this matchup.

Honestly, just dodge. In my opinion there is no harder matchup... However, when you give it a try though, there are some tips:

Fizz's E gives him the possibility to escape your stun easily, which makes this matchup really annoying. This way, he can start harassing you at lvl 3 with you dealing no dmg to him. You want to play hyper aggressive early, abusing the fact he is melee. Give him as many aa's and veigarbalefulstrike.png's in his face as possible. He will probably Q + autoattack, then E out. Stun him right after he uses his combo and return some damage to him back with veigardarkmatter.png + veigarbalefulstrike.png. Of course, you also have to care about his jungler. He could gank you with lv 3 or even lv 2, while you are hyper-aggressively harassing Fizz.

Post-6 he has a lot more kill potential, so play careful and try to dodge his shark. If he lands it, you are likely be dead. Staying under tower/playing like a "pussy" is highly recommended. But seriously if he is a good Fizz, you won't stand a chance in lane most of the times. When he is a little bit fed, it is enough to dive you with you having no chance.

You have to rush MR, there is no other choice. You can test a little bit around:
After a double dorans you can rush 3065.png or even 3102.png to be safe from that hard-to-dodge long range shark. Yes, I know that sucks, u won't be able to deal any respectable ammount of dmg. Maybe something like 1057.png+3211.png can work as well, I never tried it. Be creative. MR plus Exhaust should theoretically make you almost unkillable 1v1, but i can't guarantee, that this is so practically. Because of the lack of dmg you should take your jungler with you, what is hard as well with his easy fizze.png-escape.

VS

Galio

Medium

Summoner Spell:

12.png: I don't think that you need something else against Galio.

I did NOT have this matchup yet, the new Galio is completely strange to me. What I can tell you is, that you should not let him in your range. Kite him, don't stay in his galioq.png too long, always expect a galiow.png+4.png combo, when he has flash up, cause chances are quite high that he wants to introduce a gank like that. Thus, when you don't know the enemy jungler's position, stay away from him (with away I mean about 2 flash ranges). Once he is in range and able to combo you with everything he has, he will outtrade you every single time, remember that.
Also, care about his animations; When he uses his galioe.png, he will first fly a little bit to the opposite direction before dashing (for example: he dashes a little bit backwards and then forwards). This makes it easy for you to just go away or placing your veigareventhorizon.png into his direction. He cannot interrupt his dash, so that he has no other chance of seeing himself dashing into your cage.

Post 6, he can roam quite well with his galior.png. Your option is to follow up his roam, which lasts too long most of the times, cause you just do not have a global ult like TF, Pantheon or his ult. The other option is pushing the waves and, therefore, making him miss a lot of CS and additionally damaging his tower. His ult also is quite dangerous to get towerdived. He can take the turret aggro while being relatively tanky and if he gets low, he can simply ult his jungler and get untargetable. Consequently, he will reset his turret aggro and you will pretty much die. Be aware of that. Maybe ask your jungler to countergank, when you expect him to do this, but do NOT rely on it though (most junglers will ignore you).

For itemization, you might think about building something like 3802.png+3135.png, because he will definitely buy a lot of MR, since his whole kit scales with MR.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Summoner Spell:

12.png: I, personally, always go TP in this matchup.

21.png: Take this to be safer in general versus a heavy dmg team comb and to deny some dmg of GP's barrel combos.

3.png: Exhaust is helpfull, when you have struggles with this matchup and cannot hold GP away from you for example. So, when he engages you with his ult and walks up to you, trieing to hit his barrel on you and to give his strong AA's in your face, you can exhaust him and backoff immediately.

Play safe in general: This means, that you should not get greedy to CS, when he has put down some barrels to zone you. Otherwise he will deal heavy dmg to you. Also, do not waste your cage. He simply can use his gangplankw.png to get out of it and, therefore, you have nothing left to keep him away from you. However, this does not mean, that you shouldn't trade with him. You even are supposed to trade him in early levels. Try to hit as many veigarbalefulstrike.pngs and AA's on him as possible, while not sacrificing too much of your CS. Once you have Morellos, you can trade him with your whole combo without losing all of your mana instantly. Does he have his gangplankw.png up, cast your veigareventhorizon.png around him and use your W on its center, followed up by a Q into the direction he wants to crush the wall to W out. Like that you guaranty to hit him with at least one spell. Alternatively, you can cast your veigareventhorizon.png this way, that one specific wall is near of him and W outside of the wall being near of him, followed up by your Q, afterwards (explanation: most GPs want to crush through the wall, which is on their nearest, immediately, to W out -> They will walk into your W and also get hit by your Q, if done right). Does he have his gangplankw.png on CD, you can trade him quite easily, cause he cannot escape your E. So you have to care about, when he uses his W. When he uses it, you have a 22 sec time window (without CDR and at rank 1;assuming that most GPs only put 1 point into W), to get some nasty dmg off.

Post 6, you have to expect him to initiate a fight on you with his gangplankr.png. Be ready to backoff immediately and plan the next steps you wanna do, once he uses R on you. It's all about thinking of next potential steps. He won't roam around that much, but he has global map pressure with his ult, which you cannot prevent. Roams are pointless also, cause he just can be present in an upcoming fight with his ult and push your lane so ridiculously fast at the same time. But what you can do, is trading him and even killing him when he is low enough (without MR/hexdrinker half life, with MR/hexdrinker 1/3 health), while his R is on CD (180 sec without CDR at rank 1).

For the case he goes 3111.png and/or 3155.png, you need to buy 3135.png. To compensate your mana issues, you should maybe purchase 3802.png or 2x 1056.png before.

Matchup Notes Back to Top

What you can do in every matchup:

  • Freeze lane near of your tower (wave control is not always possible with Veigar, but can be a good tool to use. Especially against any kind of assassin, you should NEVER EVER push the wave further than to the middle of the lane, cause then they will be able to zone you from farm and punish your potential overstep, which occurs cause of greedyness to CS.)

  • Play like a "pussy": Staying under tower, lasthitting under tower, beeing aggressive with your jungler/engaging with your cage, and beeing aggressive when you have some items.

  • Find tactics for every matchup by yourself, learn specific matchups just by playing the game.

  • Ask your jungler for help. Veigar has a great kill potential with his jungler, because he is able to catch opponnents inside of his stun.

  • Roam lanes after pushing out the mid lane/putting pressure there.

  • Take any summoner spell, what you prefer for special matchups. I only give you my recommendation of the summoners you should use in certain matchups. That is not a must! Discover what the best is for you personal.

You also should know, that every single matchup is my own personal opinion. When I categorize a matchup as hard, medium, or easy, it is my personal experience and thoughts about the matchup (the difficulty of a matchup also depends on the elo of course - My matchups refer to Plat-Diamond Elo). Everyone has other opinions about the difficulty of a certain matchup and maybe other playstyles and tactics as well. I apologize for the case someone tried to copy my tactic and wasn't successful with that kind of playstyle. In the end, everybody has to make his own experience and, thus, develop technics, which fit their playstyle.
My matchup list is oriented by the meta picks, that means by common picks and NOT fun picks like 427.png164.png119.png, ... mid. This guide is there to teach you for competitive. I will add a section to teach you Support Veigar, but the specific matchups for support Veigar will not be included in the matchup list as well, since the guide is focused on playing mid lane.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

Before coming to the general tips and tricks with Veigar, you should know the most important thing: Farming.

How to farm with your Q efficiently?

First type:
You hit one minion, than the one near of it, and than the first one again and keep on doing that until they are low enough to stack both of them with one Q. (Care on the health of the minions, sometimes you have to hit one minion twice before hitting another, also be aware that this method most likely will lead to a lane push).

Second type:
You are stacking one minion and hitting your opponent with the second collide of your Q. This will allow you to get one stack by farming beside one by hitting an enemy, which is a really good reward additional to the harass.

Third type:
You are hitting only one minion per Q while executing it. This will allow you one stack only but this method will lead to a more "freezy" lane, making sure you won't push and more likely getting pushed by the enemy. Consequently your jungler can whether punish his push or you won't get punished by the enemy's jungler.

Tipps and Tricks

veigarbalefulstrike.png4.png

Like the Zed shurikens for example, you can flash right after you are in the animation of your Q, to land it much faster and easier.

4.pngveigareventhorizon.png

When you know for 100 % that your target has no flash or dash etc., it is sometimes really worth to flash for your stun.
BUT never do this, if you aren't sure the enemy has no way to escape !!!

4.pngveigarprimordialburst.png

Has a target about 1/3 health ( in late game: squishy target with half life) and is overextending, then use flash followed by your ult. It's a free kill, tilts the enemies easily and is always worth. But be aware about opponnents who could counter your ultimate with something like 3157.png or Yasuo's windwall, Kayle's ultimate and so on.

veigardarkmatter.png

You can use a W to check a bush, you can imagine it like a ward over 2 seconds, because it brings vision over the area using it.

veigareventhorizon.png

Use walls to set up an "invisible" stun for the enemies behind that wall. Since patch 6.17 the invisible stun is fixed, but it is still a good tactic you can do, because of the less reaction times enemies will have to it.

When an allied champion is seperated from you by a wall, you can wait there and treat him as a bait while he doesn't know by himself. So when an enemy comes to him, you can place your stun over the wall and depending on the thickness of it do your whole combo. That are really easy kills I can tell you ;). Sometimes, when your R has not enough range, you can also flash over the wall to use it and finish off your poor target.

veigarbalefulstrike.pngveigardarkmatter.png

Be aware that, if you have 3020.png3089.png1026.png in minute 20-25, you can oneshot the enemies' ADC with a single W+Q. So if you get to stun them with an E, just use W+Q and do not waste your ultimate.

veigareventhorizon.pngveigardarkmatter.png

When you did not hit your stun but the enemy is inside of your cage, ALWAYS use your W in the center of your E.
This will allow you the maximum hit chance of your W and consequently of your whole dmg.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some combos:

veigareventhorizon.png+veigardarkmatter.png+veigarbalefulstrike.png+veigarprimordialburst.png: Standard veigar combo. Nukes any target late game, deletes targets without a heavy shield like 3053.png3048.png... mid game. You just wanna do your W directly after your E, than your Q and your R.

veigareventhorizon.png+veigardarkmatter.png+veigarprimordialburst.png+veigarbalefulstrike.png: The same combo only with the difference that you ult before using Q. This combo is much faster then the first one, 'cause you aren't waiting for your W to hit. With a lead and 3089.png in your bag, you will oneshot with this combo as well, but the maximum ammount of damage should be less, because you do your ult when the enemy has more health left.

veigareventhorizon.png+veigardarkmatter.png+veigarprimordialburst.png: You wanna set up this combo when there are too many minions preventing you from hitting your Q. This combo is used in the mid lane when you are 1v1-ing an opponnent and need to shut him down fastly while he is still stunned. Be aware that this combo, used in the early to mid game, will only kill your target when it is already half life.

veigarbalefulstrike.png+veigarprimordialburst.png: When you are really ahead OR in late game, you can just use Q+R to oneshot the ADC. This method of oneshotting will requiere you hitting your Q first. Can also be combined with flash.

veigareventhorizon.png+veigarbalefulstrike.png+veigarprimordialburst.png: This combo is exactly the same as the one above only for the case you stunned the ADC. You also could use veigareventhorizon.png+veigardarkmatter.png+veigarbalefulstrike.png, when you have more time to assassinate him and wanna keep your ult, BUT depending on your items, this combo will not always garanty you to see your target dead.

veigareventhorizon.png+veigarprimordialburst.png+veigarbalefulstrike.png:  The same combo only with the difference that you ult before using Q.With a lead and 3089.png in your bag, you will oneshot with this combo as well, but the maximum ammount of damage should be less, because you do your ult when the enemy has more health left. This combo CAN be more relieant to hit.

Supporting with Veigar Back to Top

Summoner Spells:

4.png3.png  typical support summoner, you can't do anything wrong with taking that.

4.png14.png  tryhard summoner. You can take it, when you have a very aggressive lane and, thus, enough pressure to                 kill the opponnents very early in the game.

Runes:

You can go the typical Veigar Runes I showed you above (I personally do that). Or you can change the rune setup, try to discover your personal setup. I give you some options you can take ( which are the best in my opinion).

  • fiorapassive.png Quints: AP, AP/lv, CDR, CDR/lv, MS

  • veigarbalefulstrike.png Glyphs: AP, AP/lv, CDR, CDR/lv

  • bardw.png Seals: Armor, Health/lv

  • aatroxpassive.png Marks: Magic Pen

An example rune page could be like this:

  • 9x AP Quints

Items:

Here are some build options. I always use this kind of build when i wanna support with Veigar. The situational options are huge, but luckily for you the game does not last that long, so that you do not have to decide what to purchase next of these beautiful items ;D. You can go tanky, you can put more money in utility, or you can build even more dmg. Your choice.

Playstyle:

You wanna be very aggressive in lane, poking the enemy with your Q, and - for the case you have enough pots yet- also aa them at the cost of some of your hp. Only play Veigar with a burst adc ( 236.png202.png119.png,...), otherwise you will most likely lose your lane, because Veigars playstyle as supp does not fit to a rather "passive" lane ( 67.png )
It is all about abusing the opponnents early on, trying to burn some summoners or even kill them with lv 3, and all-inning wit lv 6/ snowballing with your crazy ult powerspike. Later on, you have different jobs to do as Veigar:

  1. Oneshot the opponents' ADC
  2. Peel your ADC (with you E, Rylais Slow, ... , or by simply oneshotting the one trieing to kill your adc :D)
  3. Engage fights with your Stun
  4. Vision control
  5. die for a more important ally, especially when you put your dmg out already/nuked up someone
