Summoner Spells Back to Top

Standard Summs:

No need for an explanation here. All immobile mages should be running flash.

Barrier will be your standard summoner the majority of the time. I take it over heal because it's a lot better to deal with burst damage since it absorbs more and it has a lower cool down compared to heal.

 3.png
You should take this summoner when you're against an assassin such as Zed, Fizz, Talon.

The only time I take cleanse is when I'm against someone with very reliable CC such as Twisted Fate or Lissandra. You can also take this against combo mages that rely on landing their CC abilities to land the rest of their spells such as Veigar, Lissandra or Lux.

Summs to avoid:

Ignite is a poor choice for Vel'Koz because he is a long range caster. Ideally, he should never be within ignite range of his enemies.

Masteries Back to Top

This is the only mastery page I use for Vel'Koz.

Other people like to take the Precision Mastery for the penetration stats, but with the slight rework, Vel'Koz does a lot more true damage now (about 35% of his overall damage) and true damage does not benefit at all from magic penetration. The 5% CDR is actually really nice since it allows Vel'Koz to spam more skillshots in order to proc his research passive.

Also, a lot of people like to take Savagery over Wanderer in most mage setups for easier last hitting, but I prefer Wanderer for movement speed since Vel'koz is immobile. Plus thanks to the rework, you can last hit with your Q since it refunds some mana and already has a low cost.

Thunderlords is the best keystone for Vel'Koz since he is an aoe combo mage.

Not much to say here, I prefer to max W for waveclear since Vel'Koz can pretty much clear an entire non cannon wave with 2 Ws. Some players like to max Q first for stronger poke and better last hitting with Q, but I honestly just prefer W for the faster shove.

Situational Items

Core

Really standard AP build. You wanna get Morellos for the AP and CDR and Luden's for the stronger poke.

Vel'Koz makes great use of Liandries since the MPEN is good for his high base damages, but the major seller is the passive. Since Vel'Koz has a lot of CC built into his kit (which is why you sometimes see him in the support position) he will pretty much always make full use of the Liandries burn passive.

Get Ionian boots to reach that CDR cap and the cooldown on summs is a nice touch.

Every mage needs a deathcap and a void staff. Even though Vel'Koz does a great deal of true damage, void staff is still a core item on him. Void staff helps your basic abilites and it helps when you're using your ultimate on non-researched targets. Death cap is just a standard on most mages.

Situational

You wanna Abyssal for harder AP matchups such as Ahri, Leblanc or Syndra. However, the aura range is actually shorter than the range of your basic abilties, so the only reason I am recommend this item is because the raw stats are just too good.

You want Zhonyas when you're against Assassins in lane or when the enemy team has an assassin jungler. You could also get Zhonyas if you're against a lot of divers such as Lee Sin, or Irelia. Basically anyone who can gap close.

The only time I get Banshees is when the enemy team comp has a lot of engage CC. You could also get this if the enemy team has multiple AP champions.

Items to avoid

3048.png
Although Vel'Koz does have some nice AP ratios, building a Seraphs hurts him more than it helps. It delays his power spikes too harshly and he doesn't really benefit from the extra mana since his mana costs are actually pretty generous.

3116.png
This is a waste of an item slot. Vel'Koz already has 2 slows and a knock up in his kit. The only time where Vel'Koz actually benefits from the slow passive is when he uses his W and procs his passive. But if you're using your W on an opponent chances are they are already CC'd by your Q or E. And if you procced your passive you definitely landed your Q or E.

3027.png
This item isn't very optimal for Vel'Koz because he needs CDR which is why morellos is the better buy. The mages that build RoA are usually short ranged like Annie or Lissandra because short ranged carries are more likely to take damage whereas Vel'Koz is a long range caster meaning he is less likely to be taking hits.

3152.png
I personally don't find this item to be that great. Sure the dash is nice, but in terms of raw stats it's really sub par. It's just not worth taking up an item slot.

VS

Ahri

Hard

Somewhat of a hard match up. Vel'Koz doesn't really have kill pressure until he hits 6. But, when Ahri hits 6 she can basically dodge you're entire combo unless you catch her before she is able to ult. So I would just play passive and call for a gank. However, you do outscale her in teamfights, so it's not the end of the world if you fall behind in lane.

VS

Azir

Medium

This matchup is a kind of annoying early in lane since Azir can easily farm and harass at the same time with his soldiers. But when he is using his soldiers, he has to stay still which gives you the opportunity to land some abilties on him. Once both champions hit 6 it really depends on who acts first. Vel'Koz can 80-0 him if he lands his E. If Azir is able to perform the Shurima Shuffle successfully, Vel'Koz is probably dead unless he has flash.

VS

Fizz

Medium

This matchup is pretty easy until Fizz hits 6. It's the same as Vel'Koz. Both champions don't really have kill pressure until they unlock their ultimate. Early levels you can harass with your range autos. Also you can constantly shove the wave since Fizz has poor waveclear. When he is 6 you have to respect his kill pressure.

Rush Zhonyas so that if he lands his ult, you can just completely ignore it.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

This is a really hard matchup. When I play this lane I don't even bother trading with a Leblanc. I choose to take advantage of her poor waveclear by just constantly shoving the wave and looking to roam. I recommend rushing a negatron cloak.

VS

Lux

Medium

This is sort of a skill matchup (literally since it depends on who can land their skillshots better) Her poke is superior to yours since her E has faster projectile speed and it goes through minions. Both champions have kill pressure once they hit 6, so it all depends on whether you can land your E or whether she can land her snare. However, you do have the advantage in this specific scenario. You can cleanse her snare, but she cannot cleanse your knockup.

VS

Swain

Easy

You outrange him and outshove him. Laning against Swain will be pretty easy all you gotta do is watch for his nevermove and you should be good. You can easily harrass him with your basic abilties since he's immobile.

Buy Morellos to deal with his healing.

VS

Talon

Medium

This matchup is pretty easy pre 6. You can pretty much bully him since he's melee. But once Talon gets access to his ult he can pretty much 100-0 you. It's pretty ridiculous. I would recommend constantly shoving the wave to keep Talon occupied so that he doesn't roam.

Rush Zhonyas and bring a pink ward.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

He doesn't really have any kill pressure at all during lane. Most Twisted Fates will look to farm up to 6 and ult to other lanes. You are a lot stronger than him during lanes and can easily out trade him since he is immobile.

I would bring cleanse to deal with his gold card.

VS

Veigar

Easy

You outrange him, you can easily harass him with your EW combo since he's immobile. Be wary of his cage, you need to avoid hitting the edges of it in order to not get stunned. If you harass him well enough chances are he'll back earlier and you can get a xp and cs lead. Once you hit 6, you could probably kill him 80-0.

Bring Cleanse for his cage.

VS

Viktor

Medium

This matchup is a bit rough levels 1-4 since Viktor has better harass in lane thanks for his Q and E. It's a lot easier for Viktor to land his laser on you since it goes through minions. You can poke him with Q, but it could be hard to land depending on how skilled at dodging your opponent is and how the minions are positioned.

However, once you get all your basic abilties unlocked you can look to combo him.

Post 6, both champions have kill pressure. One thing of note is that Viktor's ultimate can cancel Vel'Koz's channeled laser. So, you should be a good distance from Viktor before you channel your ultimate. Or you could wait for Viktor to use up his ultimate first, reposition, then unleash your combo on him.

VS

Zed

Hard

Unlike a lot of people, I don't think this matchup is that bad. You can bully him early (levels 1-3) due to the fact that he is melee, but from that point on you have to respect his damage. It's actually a lot easier to deal with Zed's poke since they removed the animation canceling on his shadow and they nerfed some of his damage. Basically after level 3, you just have to play safe and farm up.

Rush Zhonyas to ignore his ult and basically his entire combo.
