Summoner Spells Back to Top

Notes

Always take 4.png.

21.png is the safest pick for your 2nd summoner spell. It protects from some burst and is easy to bait with during laning phase.

Take 3.png against burst champions such as 238.png or 134.png.

You can take 6.png, if you feel like you need extra roaming potential and you don't need safety from 21.png or 3.png.

Masteries Back to Top

Notes

Always take Thunderlord's. It synergises with his combo based and bursty playstyle. Also his ultimate can proc TLD on its own.

Usually take Bounty Hunter, but you can opt for Double Edged Sword in easier matchups. (Tier 4 Ferocity)

If you have trouble lasthitting with Vel'Koz, you can take Savagery instead of Wanderer. (Tier 1 Cunning)

Notes

Start with Wvelkozw.png and push the minion wave to your opponent's turret.
Always max your Wvelkozw.png first for the best pushing potential.

Combos

Your basic combos will be:

Qvelkozq.png + Wvelkozw.png + Evelkoze.png + Rvelkozr.png
-Use this combo when enemy is far away or has extra mobility. Slowing target first with Q makes it easier to hit E.

GrandInformalAnemoneshrimp-size_restrict

Evelkoze.png + Wvelkozw.png + Qvelkozq.png + Rvelkozr.png
-Use this if you are sure you can hit E without the slow from Q.

NaturalCircularConch-size_restricted.gif

Qvelkozq.png + Rvelkozr.png
-Simply Q + Ult can kill squishy targets late game.

Tips

velkozpassive.pngPassive:
-Try to maintain passive stacks with auto attacks for better trades during laning phase.

velkozq.pngQ:
-Your main harass spell. Use unexpected angles to hit enemy champions (i.e. between minions).
-Killing a minion with Q refunds half of the mana used to cast. So killing 3 minions with one Q gives you more mana than you used to cast the ability.
-Its easiest to start your combo with Q due to its slowing effect, making it easier to hit  your other abilities.

velkozw.pngW:
-Your main wave clear ability.
-Can be used while moving, making it good for kiting.

velkoze.pngE:
-Your only hard CC, use it to peel yourself or enable combo.

velkozr.pngR:
-Don't underestimate your ult's damage even if you don't get the true damage from passive.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Doran's ring is just overall best starting item for Vel'Koz.

Core Items

If you have to go back early, go ahead and get a second Doran's Ring. Dark Seal is a great choice, if you're ahead in lane. It's very cheap and effective.
Rush one of these items. Morellonomicon is the best choice overall. Get ROA or Hextech GLP instead, if you need more survivability.
Get the ones you prefer. Sorcerer's Shoes: 35% CDR Ionian Boots: 45% CDR
Suboptimal build: You will lack CDR and some mana, but you get tons of damage and health.
Get these late game items. Gives you the best damage output.
Get every game. One of the last items you build, unless enemy team stacks MR.
Get Zhonya against AD matchups and/or assassins.
Get Abyssal against tough AP lanes.

Situational Items

Late game defensive item, if needed.
Same as GA, but against "pick comps" i.e. Blitzcrank.
You can consider upgrading your Dark Seal into Mejai's if you are really fed. Risky item.
After full build, you can replace boots with Lich Bane if you feel like it.
Get after first back, against poke matchups. Really cost efficient.

Lux

Easy
Matchup is simple. If you get hit by her luxlightbinding.png, she will chunk you hard with her combo. Vel'koz pushing power is stronger than Lux's and she will struggle at farming under turret. Try to push and look for opportunities to use your combo, after lvl 6 you can easily kill her with one rotation if you hit her with velkoze.png and she can't really prevent it.

Take 21.png To counter her burst.

VS

Syndra

Hard
Syndra is one of the hardest matchsups for Vel'Koz.

What Syndra can do: The matchup is pretty even until lvl 6 and then Syndra will take a lead in kill pressure. She will try to lock you down with his syndraq.png + syndrae.png combo and kill you with his syndrar.png. She can also stall her syndrae.png and use it instantly to prevent you from ulting.

What you can do: Try to farm safely pre 6 and don't get hit by her poke with syndraq.png and syndraw.png. Always stay at angle so she can't hit her stun with syndraq.png + syndrae.png combo. Try to keep wave pushed with your velkozw.png spam and you should be constantly trying to find place to use your velkoze.png + velkozw.png +velkozq.png combo to chunk her off. After lvl 6 if you manage to make her waste her syndrae.png, that will be your room to use your full combo to kill her.

Take 3.png to counter her ult burst!

VS

Taliyah

Medium

Coming soon

VS

Talon

Hard

What Talon can do: Talon has dangerous lvl 2 powerspike with talonw.png + talonq.png combo, lvl 6 powerspike with talonr.png and great roaming potential. Don't let him stack his passive stacks and proc it. Talon will try to roam after 6, so you need to sure when to push or follow his roaming. Keep your teammates aware where Talon is.

What you can do: Try to squeeze as much poke as possible on him so he wont go all-in on you. In lane he has only one escape with his talonq.png and if he is in side of the lanes he can use talone.png as an escape. You can use that that to your advantage and try to find a spot to kill him.

Take 3.png to prevent his burst!

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy
What Twisted Fate can do: Only thing he can do before lvl6 is trying to keep in farm with his wildcards.png and red card spam. He has 0 kill potential without jungler's assist. Only way he can win this matchup is by using his destiny.png wisely and giving other laners lead with his roaming capability.

What you can do: You should focus on poking and shoving before lvl6. You can also go for a kill before lvl6, if you hit him with your velkoze.png. After lvl6 always let your teammates know where TF is and does he have his destiny.png up. Awareness is key here. If you can't follow him, try to push first turret down in mid and start collapsing mappressure on your favor from there. Always look for a kill with your full combo on TF when he is in midlane.

Pick 21.png for overall survivability or 6.png for roaming potential.

VS

Veigar

VS

Viktor

Easy
What Viktor can do: As medium range mage, Viktor will try to focus farming and and poking with viktordeathray.png while also farming minions with it. If Viktor starts his lvl 1 with viktorpowertransfer.png, stay back because he will win lvl 1 trades with it. Viktor has low killpressure since he is slow scaling mage. After lvl 6 he has some kill pressure with his viktorchaosstorm.png.

What you can do: Vel'Koz should be stronger during early- to midgame. There is nothing specia before lvl 6. After lvl 6 if you have managed to poke him to around 70-80% health, you can fullcombo him for a free kill. Always stay out of range of viktorchaosstorm.png or wait him to waste it so he does not prevent your velkozr.png. Usually his viktorgravitonfield.png is not fast enough cc to be an effective way to prevent your velkozr.png.

Take 21.png to counter his burst and overall survivability.

VS

Zed

Medium
What Zed can do: He has no real kill potential against Vel'Koz during laningphase because of Vel'Koz long range and kiting potential. Don't let him poke with zedw.png zede.png zedq.png harass combo. After lvl6 do not waste your velkoze.png since blowing your only hard cc opens him room for good ult. When Zed ults, always use your velkoze.png behind you because it is where he will land and it will mess up his combo hard.

What you can do: You can shove faster than him and force him to use his zedw.png for farming. This gives you room to chunk him with your combo and autoattacks. After lvl6 you can burst him down when he has no zedw.png available or he is too far away to use zedr.png(or it is on cooldown). Be careful when choosing between going for a kill and using velkoze.png for your full combo and letting your defense down.

You can take either 3.png to focus countering his ult or 21.png for more overall survability.

VS

Ziggs

Easy

What Ziggs can do: He has lightly better waveclear than you do. Don't let him poke you with his ziggsq.png so dodge it and don't stand close to your minionwave. Match up is equal till lvl6 and after that you should have way more killpressure. Only way Ziggs can win this matchup is by powerpushing your first turret down with his empowered autoattacks and ziggsw.png tower active or poking you low enough to finish you off with his ziggsr.png.

What you can do: You are basically a stronger version of Ziggs. Try to poke him down while keeping up with your farming. After lvl6 if you hit him with your velkoze.png, you can kill him from full health with one full combo. his ziggsw.png wont be enough effective escape and only way he might live is using his ziggsw.png to cancel your velkozr.png instead.

Pick  21.png to rule out his ult or take 6.png for more roaming potential.

About me Back to Top

This guide was created as a university study project. We are a mix of three plat to diamond players. We have been playing the game on and off since Season 2. The purpose of this guide is to give you an overall idea of Vel'Koz in the midlane. We chose Vel'Koz, because it was one of the few mutual champions we all play.
