Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png - Flash is a MUST HAVE summoner spell on Vel'Koz. Take this spell every single game no matter what. Vel'Koz is an extremely immobile champion and flash can be used in many ways such as escaping a gank or getting yourself into a good position during a  teamfight. If you don't run flash you will be putting yourself at a severe disadvantage for the entire course of the game.

21.png - Barrier is my favorite secondary summoner spell. Since Vel'Koz is immobile and squishy having barrier gives him a little bit more tankiness that he might need to secure a kill. During laning phase barrier is an excellent choice because Junglers are gonna see an immobile mage sitting under his tower, get greedy and try to dive you, but they're gonna forget about barrier almost every time. Using barrier to bait out an early tower dive and kill is an excellent way to get a lead in lane, and I run barrier in almost every midlane matchup.

1.png  - Cleanse is another viable summoner spell that can be very handy in some situations. If you're going against a teamcomp that has some hard cc that you would like to pop out of in a moments notice then feel free to take cleanse. Personally I don't run it very often because I think I'm a little bit slow on using it and it doesn't help much, but if you're confident in your ability to break the cc then this can be a good option for you.

3.png - Exhaust is an excellent choice in matchups against assasins who are going to try to jump on you and burst you out with all that they've got. Some great examples of this are Zed and Talon. If you exhaust them right as they go in on you then they wont be able to one shot you, and hopefully you will be able to respond back with a full combo and out burst them to secure a kill.

6.png - Ghost is a preference summoner spell that can be used in replacement of barrier. Some people like the mobility that Ghost provides as it allows them to dodge skillshots more easily and close gaps to secure kills. Personally I prefer to run barrier for the defensiveness that it gives Vel'Koz but if you prefer Ghost then I think it can be an excellent choice in almost every matchup.

14.png - NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER RUN IGNITE ON VELKOZ. Ignite is a close ranged summoner spell and Vel'Koz is a long ranged mage. You should NOT be getting close enough to enemies to make Ignite a viable summoner spell. You should be trying to keep your distance and get kills with long range abilities such as your ult.

So this is a weird leveling sequence so let me explain it a little bit. Level 1 you're going to want to start W because it allows you to instantly shove the wave and the enemy laner is going to have to choose between either giving up farm to his tower, or taking pokes from your auto attacks. After that you're gonna want to grab a point in Q because you can w the caster minions in the second wave and then q them to proc the passive and keep the wave shoved. Level 3 you're gonna grab E so that you have all of the basic abilities but then you have a few different options. You can choose to use ew to clear the casters while using q to clear the melees if you want to keep the minions pushed OR you can try to land a Q to slow the enemy laner, then combo with an EW. This will Vel'Koz's passive as well and do about 40% of the enemy's health which is a HUGE chunk and can really intimidate them. After that you're gonna put 2 more points into W, levels 4 and 5, and you'll be able to clear the caster minions by casting both charges of your W and really keep the wave shoved. Now that you have the ability to instantly shove the wave you can start maxing your Q (after grabbing an ult point) and start poking everybody out. After Q is maxed and your poke is at Max potential you're gonna finally max W and E. 127.jpg

velkozpassive.png

Vel'koz's Passive is pretty simple, land 3 abilities and it will proc and do a huge chunk of damage based off of level + 50% of AP, BUT it also lets your R do TRUE damage after you have procced it. Ideally you should always proc your passive before ulting, but don't let that scare you from making a really good play.179.pngvelkozq.png
Q is the primary way to poke on Vel'Koz as well as an excellent source of damage. Q also slows the enemy so it is a great way to set yourself up for other combos, kite away from enemies, or to chase down a kill.179.pngvelkozw.png
W is a staple to Velkoz's kit as it can proc 2 out of the 3 stacks needed to pop your passive and deal a huge chunk of damage to the enemy. It is also your main form of wave clear both during laning phase and after. The bulk of most combo damage comes from using this to pop your passive.179.pngvelkoze.png
E can be used in a couple of different waves, but is also the only form of cc that Vel'Koz has against enemies that can't be slowed so be sure to keep that in mind if there is a master yi or someone similar chasing you down. If that's not the situation, you can use this in lane to wave clear if you KNOW you'll be safe after wards, or you can use it in combination with your W to set up a nice combo and passive proc.179.pngvelkozr.png
Let me just lead by saying this, EVERYBODY will underestimate the amount of damage that this ability can do. If you hit level 6 and the enemy laner is stupid enough to be standing in lane with 40% HP just ult them, they will die or burn flash, its a win for you either way. Generally though, you want to use your ultimate in combination with other abilities, because as mentioned before, once you proc your passive your ult will be doing TRUE DAMAGE. The only time it should really be used by itself is if you're sniping someone from a very long distance, or you see a few people hard cc'd for a second but they are too far away to EW and your team just needs the little bit of damage.
127.jpg

COMBOS179.png

velkozq.pngvelkozw.png QW - This is a very simple combo but it can be somewhat difficult to land, this is best used from fog of war when an enemy is running straight towards you or when you are trying to kite away from somebody, simply throw a QW at their face and watch them walk straight into it. This will Proc your Passive ability and deal MASSIVE Chunks of damage, especially later in the game.179.png

velkozq.pngvelkozw.pngvelkoze.png - Pre 6 the QWE Is the best combo that you can land. Land a Q to slow them down, then follow up with an WE to knock them up and Pop your passive stacks on them. This will chunk any squishy for at least half of their health and late game this alone can 1 shot an adc.179.png

velkozq.pngvelkozw.pngvelkoze.pngvelkozr.png - QWER is the IDEAL Vel'Koz combo and this will shred through anybody, tanks included. Start off by throwing a Q, land the slow and follow by a WE, very similar to the last combo, but this time you want to IMMEDIATELY cast your Ultimate ability. Because you have popped 3 stacks of your passive at this point, your ultimate will be doing TRUE DAMAGE, which means it will ignore any and all magic resist that the enemy has built, making this a great tool for shredding tanks.179.png

velkozq.pngvelkozr.png - QR May seem like a pretty basic combo, but you can really surprise people with it. This is one of my favorite Combos to use because when done right, it looks absolutely beautiful and you'll earn the respect of everybody in the game. You only want to use this combo when somebody is out of range of your E and your W, and it would be unsafe to walk any more forward. The trick here is to throw your Q at about a 45 degree angle and then start ulting them straight away. When they see your laser beam pounding down on their face and start to back up, and if you angled the q right, it'll pop at max range and smack them from the side when they aren't expecting it at all. If you're full build this combo alone is enough to kill an adc or any other squishy, and although extremely difficult to do, can instantly win a game if done correctly.
179.png
velkozq.png4.png - Q-FLASH is a nice animation cancel that can really catch people off guard. If you cast q just a little before you flash you can remove the buffer time that casting q has and give people almost no reaction time at all to dodge your skillshot.179.pngvelkozr.png4.png - R-FLASH is another animation cancel for Vel'Koz. This is most useful for picking someone off that is really low health and just outside of where your ult range will be. You can cast r and flash forward to reduce the channel time and get a little bit of extra range to finish off the enemy. Another use for this is to cast ult and flash backwards to get a little bit of distance between you and the enemy. This is MUCH harder as you have to move your mouse forward to cast ult, then behind you to flash backwards, and then forward again to control your ult. There is a lot of mouse movement going on here but it can be great for changing your position in a teamfight before becoming stationary for your ult.127.jpg

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

First Buy - Less than 900 gold
First buy 900+. Depending on how much gold you have you can decide between no biscuits, some biscuits and no control ward, or some biscuits and a control ward

Core Items

These 3 items are ABSOLUTELY core and should be built every game. Some occasions may arise where you need to get a zhonyas or banshees before finishing all three of these but these should all find their way into your build at some point.
These items are core in the sense that if you make it to full build they should 100% find thier way into the build, but most games you will close out before being able to afford both of them, so I would reccomend getting a void staff if they have any sort of Magic resist built and a Rabadons first if the enemy team is just all squishies. A defensive Item should come before either of these items are built about 90% of the time.

Situational Items

Zhonyas is a MUST BUY against champions such as zed or talon, and excellent in many other situations where you might need to be invulnerable for a few seconds, and this can really save your ass in teamfights.
Banshees is a great item against mages. It will reduce all the damage that Ability Power does to you and it will REALLY save your ass against assassins such as Leblanc who really rely on the early burst to kill you.
Mejais is SUPER risky, do not build this unless you are on a smurf.
NEVER BUY THIS ITEM. A lot of Vel'Koz players like to build Rylais but its passive is almost completely wasted as Vel'Koz's Q slows for more than Rylais, his ult slows for the same, and his E is a knock up. This means that your W is really the only ability that would benefit from the passive, and it just makes it terribly inefficient.
Cooldown is a very important stat for Vel'Koz but usually you will NOT be building lucidity boots. Because of the cooldown runes you will achieve your 40% cooldown cap with morello + a defensive item, so this would just be a waste of gold which is why Sorc shoes are so much better.

VS

Ahri

Hard

Ahri is tough in the sense that she is a hypermobile assasin and if her ult is up there's about a 0% chance you land any abilities and she can one shot you pretty much at any point in the game. In this lane I like to shove in as much as I can and try to get a few roams off to the side lanes to help out. The trick to killing her is to poke her with a few q's and then land a nice WER combo that should be able to instakill her before she can ult away or onto you. Definitely would recommend a banshee's veil as soon as you're comfortable getting it so that she cant just one shot you.

VS

Akali

Medium

Pre 6 this is about as easy of a lane as it gets. She is melee and you have some of the longest ranged abilities in the game. You can poke her out all day and make sure to auto attack her when she comes up to farm minions. You should have a farm lead pre 6 and hopefully be able to get a kill level 5 or 6. After that its all about staying live, she can one shot you if you aren't careful and don't have teammates nearby. Zhonya's is good if she is diving onto you in the back of teamfights and banshees is good just for surviving the burst, so what you build is really a preference.

VS

Anivia

Medium

This lane is all about wave clear and roaming. Both of you can insta clear waves, especially level 6. I would recommenced early boots to dodge her Q because if she doesn't land her Q she cant really do anything to you. The only reason this matchup is a medium instead of easy is because you really don't have much kill pressure on her early with her egg.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy

Aurelion Sol has a HUGE hitbox which means it is really easy to hit abilities on him and he also doesn't have quite as good of waveclear as you especially early. You should out trade him all throughout lane and out burst him later on. He does roam better than you so just make sure to ping mia when he isn't in lane and this should be an easy matchup.

VS

Azir

Medium

Azir is tough in lane if he is using his soldiers to poke you out, but it costs him a lot of mana to do so as long as you're positioning correctly. Yall can both clear waves pretty fast and this matchup pretty much depends on if you can land your knock up on him before he chips away at you. If you can then you can burst him out with your ult, he isn't tanky in the slightest.

VS

Cassiopeia

Easy

Range thats it. you outrange cassiopia so hard that you shuold be able to abuse her very easily. Your ult outranges hers by a fair distance so if you get even one nice combo on her feel free to throw your R in there too and you will either kill her or burn flash. The only time i really have trouble with her is levels one and 2 before I have any of my cc available.

VS

Corki

Easy

You outdamage and out range corki with everything except his ult, which doesnt do a whole lot of damage and is pretty easy to dodge. Corki is also super squishy and you can combo him for a free kill as soon as you hit 6. Try your best to throw Q's at him any time you get the chance and he shouldn't be able to get close to you because of the slow.

VS

Ekko

Hard

This is one of my least favorite matchups. Ekko can outshove you with his Q and instantly kill you if you step out of position. Oh yea and he can dive you and just press R and be safely back in lane with 3/4 hp again, so not a fun match up at all. Try to match his shove the best that you can and do not let him get close to you or you're going to die.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

Fiddlesticks mid isn't seen too often but it is a super easy matchup for you. He has to stand still to channel his ult and to cast his drain, if he ever does this he is a FREE target for a quick WE. He is also extremely squishy so level 6 if you ever see him standing still a WER can burst him from full hp.

VS

Fizz

Hard

If you are considering playing Vel'Koz in your game, then ban Fizz. This is by far my least favorite matchup. He is extremely slippery with his E and can easily one shot you with just a RQW as soon as he hits level 6. He will abuse the fact that you're immobile and squishy and will kill you level 6 as soon as you take one wrong step.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

Heim isn't a bad matchup but it isn't a good one either. It's pretty easy for you to kill his turrets with your abilities, but this also means you don't have your abilities to kill him, so its kind of a stale mate lane where one of you just has to wait for the jungler to help you out.

VS

Jayce

Medium

Jayce does a lot of damage and you need to get a seekers armguard as soon as possible, but he is super easy to EW when he tries to kill you. Once you get used to his jump you can throw the combo underneath yourself and instantly knock him off of you as well as chunk him for a lot of his health. As long as you play this matchup smart it isn't too bad and you can shove much better than he can.

VS

Karthus

Easy

Karthus is very squishy and very short range. You can abuse him with Q's all day as he is trying to farm and can combo him out as soon as you hit 6. Just keep in mind that he can continue to do damage after he dies because of his passive and don't give him a free kill after you kill him.

VS

Kassadin

Medium

Kassadin take quite a while to scale and you should be able to shove him under tower early and get some good roams, but his poke with his Q gets very frustrating very fast. You should beat him pretty hard early but once he starts getting items and his level 2 ult at level 11 it can start shifting towards his favor, just be careful and try to stay behind your tanks. KEEP IN MIND that he can interrupt your ult at ANY TIME by casting his q on you, so make sure his q is either on cooldown or you have proper range before ulting.

VS

Katarina

Hard

Katarina is super mobile and does tons of damage. The only benefit is that she is melee and has to get on top of you to do anything to you. Your E can disrupt her ult, but theres a .5 second delay from when you cast it to when it lands, and you very well may be dead by then. Try to stay away from her daggers and you should be ok, but take one wrong step and you die.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

This is an AWFUL matchup for velkoz. Another hypermobile assasin. In lane you really just want to try to farm and get a banshee's when you can. You will be much better in teamfights than she will so just sit back and wait to scale.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

I don't see a lot of lissandra mid but its not a bad matchup for you. You can poke her with a lot of Q's and can burst her out. If she ults herself she will become immobile and you can land an easy e on her, and if she ults you that means she's vulnerable and you can combo her out and kill her.

VS

Lux

Easy

Lux is pretty easy. She does have pretty long range, but her abilities are slow and easy to dodge, especially her snare. Just keep an eye out for a fog of war snare, otherwise you can abuse her. Vel'Koz is way better in teamfights and does more damage, so if you're having trouble in lane for some reason just wait until your team groups up and outshine Lux there.

VS

Malzahar

Easy

Malzahar is pretty easy because you can constantly poke him with your Q and W so that he doesn't ever have his spellshield up in lane. If you throw an e on him right before he ults you it will disrupt him as well and cancel his ult, which is always nice. The ONLY thing you need to be really careful about is getting ulted when the enemy jungler is nearby, because if that happens you're just a sitting duck and you're probably going to die.

VS

Morgana

Medium

I think this matchup is more annoying than anything but it's not hard by any means. Both of you can shove really quickly, but Vel'Koz does considerably more damage. Your ult will also be doing true damage if you land your combo on her, so it will negate any blackshield shielding she may have if she uses it after you have procced your passive. Try to shove as fast as you can and maybe get a few roams off. She only has to step up for a split second to place her W and shove the lane so odds are she wont be in any position to die in this lane.

VS

Ryze

Easy

Ryze is VERY SHORT ranged and you can abuse that. Use your Q to make sure that he doesn't get anywhere near you and you should be ok. He can get kind of tanky so you might not be able to just combo him one time from full health to get a kill, but just keep your distance and he shouldn't be able to kill you.

VS

Syndra

Medium

Syndra is a tough matchup, her Q is basically never on cooldown so you're either constantly dodging that or she is shoving the lane pretty hard. You do out range her and she is squishy so you can burst her, but if manages to get a stun off on you then you are dead, her point and click ult does a lot of damage. You can zhonya's the ult to stop the damage or you can build a banshees and try to just tank it, its up to you.

VS

Taliyah

Medium

Taliyah is a purely a skill matchup, you can shove a little harder but she can roam a little better, you can burst harder but she has shorter cooldowns, Whoever plays better is going to win this lane out. Just burst her out and you'll be fine

VS

Talon

Hard

Talon is pretty difficult matchup, he can go invisible and he can one shot you with no problem. You need an early seekers armguard and a relatively early zhonyas. Once you're more familiar with the matchup you can knock him up with your E when he pounces on you, but always need to be careful of his burst.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

Twisted fate is an easy lane and you should be able to abuse him all throughout lane phase. He has a much shorter range than you and is very squishy. If he ults to a side lane you have to decide if you want to follow to try to help or try to push into tower, usually pushing to tower is the better idea as if you follow you'll likely be too late to make a difference.

VS

Veigar

Medium

Veigar should be really easy in lane phase as he doesn't have much kill potential until 6, but after that be careful. Get a banshees asap as that is basically your only chance of surviving his burst. In teamfights just keep your distance and you shuold be much more useful as him as he can basically just blow up one person whereas if you get the combos right you can blow up the entire team.

VS

Viktor

Medium

A good Viktor will bully you with his Q levels one and two, but after that you shouldn't have too much trouble. The only thing you really need to worry about is his W, which can immediately disrupt your ult, so try to keep a fair amount of distance.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

I struggled between putting Vladimir between hard and medium, and it could really go either way. On one hand you outrange him quite a bit so you shuold be able to bully him in lane, on the other hand he has a lot more sustain than you. Be very careful of his empowered Q and don't go anywhere near him when its up or he will chunk you. It's hard to have any kill pressure because he is able to just pool and doge all your abilities, so its really a mind game. If you can bait out his pool before using your ult you can probably kill him, but if he's smart he probably won't do that.

VS

Xerath

Hard

Xerath is tough because he is one of the only champs that can outrange you, and unless he positions extremely poorly it'll be really tough for you to get a combo on him. Just try to farm up and get some good roams to help your teammates out. During teamfights just keep an eye out for his skillshots and try to worry about the people that you are able to combo.

VS

Yasuo

Hard

Yasuo is pretty tough because his windwall stops your Q W and E, but that doesn't mean that all hope is lost. Vel'Koz is able to auto Yasuo through his windwall because it doesn't count as a projectile, and his ult can go through the windwall as well. Try not to let him get close to you, dodge his tornadoes and you should be alright. If he ults somebody near you then just through your full combo on top of him and kill him instantly.

VS

Zed

Hard

Zed is another hard matchup who can poke you from a distance with his WQ and instantly burst you for half your health so you need to be careful. Zhonya's is a must buy against Zed as it will save your life time and time again. Zed will always appear on the opposite side that he ulted you from so keep that in mind when trying to knock him up after he ults you. After a while you should get a hang of it and be able to pop a combo on him when he ults you.

VS

Ziggs

Medium

Ziggs isn't really a hard matchup but he is EXTREMELY annoying. If you keep your distance he is gonna have a ahrd time killing you, but he will constantly be throwing Q's at you and they will be really annoying to dodge. Its possible for you to walk up on him between his Q's and go for a combo on him or try to just shove and roam, whichever you feel more comfortable doing. Remember that you can't move when you're ulting and he can easily just through his ult on top of you, especially during the late game when his ult does a lot of damage.

Playstyle Back to Top

Laning

Vel'Koz is a champion that has an INCREDIBLE amount of range, great waveclear, and also does INCREDIBLE amount of burst damage, including true damage which can be used to deal with those pesky magic resistance builders. Because of this when you're playing Vel'Koz you want to abuse your range and kill people without letting them get to you. This means that in like 80% of mid lane matchups all you want to do is shove the lane with a few W's, abuse your waveclear and force the enemy to farm under tower, which for most mages can be pretty difficult. After doing this you want to look for opportunities to either get deep vision in the enemy jungler to help your team track their whereabouts or look for an opportunity to pressure side lanes through a roam. Personally I like to look for roams because I think getting an early kill can really impact the game and help your team to snowball. I also almost always roam to botlane because with 2 friendly champions down there you are able to make 2x the difference as if you went top, but if you see a free oppurtunity top lane then definitely take it. Be careful with your roams and make sure that you aren't going to be missing any farm, because its not worth it to get one kill if you're going to be 50 farm down on your lane opponent. Make smart roaming decisions and keep your farm up while you maintain pressure in other lanes.

Mid to Late

After laning phase is where you really start to shine. Vel'Koz is an INCREDIBLE teamfighter than can burn through both tanks and squishies with absolutely no trouble. Try to stay behind your frontline at all times and poke with your Q's before the fight. As soon as you see somebody CC'd you want to throw at LEAST a WEQ combo if not a WEQR. You should instantly kill them thus making the teamfight a 4v5 and giving your team the advantage. If its a squishy and your team can supply the damage needed to quickly secure the kill after your WEQ combo then hold onto your ult and save it for later on in the fight, but remember at this point you're likely to have at least 30%CDR and your ult will be on a pretty short cooldown, so don't be afraid to use it. Vel'Koz also has a decent auto attack range so try to smack towers whenever its safe and slowly chunk down enemy tower's health bars. If your team is ever behind Vel'Koz is also amazing because he has such incredible wave clear with his W. When your team is behind You should look to just turtle up behind towers and clear waves with your W's and either force the enemies to make a bad dive or stall out until your team is caught up in items.
