After much testing i've determined that stormraider's surge is the way to go on vlad. thunderlord's just isn't easy to proc on vlad and doesn't scale very well into the late game so it's not very useful. deathfire touch wasn't bad but it wasn't worth forsaking the extra 5% cdr and it wasn't as good as the movespeed from surge.

vladimirpassive.png AP -> HP > HP -> AP

Buying ability power and getting health for it is much more efficient than buying health and getting ability power for it. Many people often look at Vlad's passive and use it as a shitty argument to justify building tank items on him without realizing how inefficient it is.

Vlad's passive is meant to be used as some leeway to building purely offensive (with some splashes of defense through your normal AP items of course like zhonyas, abyssal, rylais) because you still get relatively tanky compared to any other mage with the same build. Also thanks to your pool, you have an even bigger reason to go full damage since with proper pool usage, you're able to avoid A LOT of damage.

vladimirtransfusion.pngTransfusion Management:

Learn to read the empowered Q bar under Vlad's health. First half grayed out means he has 1 charge ready. The next time you Q it will begin to build up slowly, turning yellow and it will turn red as soon as it is full. Because you don't get crimson rush until your next Q is ready, the second half of the bar will fill up slowly as your Q recovers its cooldown.

Also note that the empowered Q counts as your first Q for the next rotation.

Since your first Q charge is stored indefinitely, be sure you always got your first Q  charge loaded before a fight.

The empowered Q heal scales purely off AP so even more reason to stack it a

vladimirsanguinepool.pngPooling:

Take your pool at lvl 3 if you suspect a gank is coming for you soon, or lvl 2 if you're being pressured extremely hard since lvl 1 and you're a pussy.

You can use your pool at any point during your E channel but keep in mind that releasing the E instantly causes you to emerge from your pool. I can't tell you how many times I screwed myself over because i either tapped E by accident and pooled just to have it cancel and go on cooldown almost instantly or have my pools be cut extremely short because I forgot about the channel duration of tides. If you plan to pool during an E, be sure you're using it wisely. You can stay in your pool for 1.5 sec as opposed to the full 2 seconds because the maximum duration you can hold your E bomb is 1.5 seconds.

Do not use pool offensively unless you know they'll die to it. 95% of the time it is infinitely better used to dodge incoming attacks or CC. Use it for outplays. Pooling for damage is extremely greedy and should only be used when extremely low and you're fighting an ADC and can't tank their damage before your cooldowns are up or to dodge an important spell.

It takes a lot of practice and experience to know when it's the best time to pool something so keep at it. Get creative and realize this ability allows you to do some otherwise really stupid stuff.

vladimirtidesofblood.pngHow to blood bomb:
Keep in mind that you can flash, ult, pool, and Q while channeling your Tides of Blood. It won't even interrupt the channel either.

Do note that charging your E or pooling while crimson rush is active, it delays the 2.5 second timer. It does not fully extend it to the duration of your E charge or pool duration but it does reduce the rate at which the bar drops which gives you a chance to use that empowered Q after you charge E or pool.

vladimirhemoplague.png Setting the Stage:

Remember that your ultimate amplifies ALL damage your enemies take. That means damage from you, and your entire team. This is the biggest reason Vlad is fantastic in team fights. Make sure you can hit at least 3 people with it in a mid-late game team fight, if not, it's fine to use it when you're looking to burst out an enemy carry. If it helps you murder a carry, the oncoming would be easy without it anyway if it's a 5v4.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Easy lane/You're confident you won't need all the pots
if you pussy. jk take this most of the time
Doran's ring on vlad?!? wtf?? Read author's notes for details
Garbage item. Don't ever get this. There's 2 things you wanna do as vlad in lane, be a pussy and farm, or poke your opponent and make him your bitch. This item helps you do neither.
    broken

Core Items

Edit: Patch 69( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) RIP WOTA... Rush an armguard if you're gettin dicked by a zed/talon.
Rush a codex. Luden's when you rollin up real smooth on them hoes.
Rush a codex. Rylais when u gettin played.
Sometimes i like to go codex -> kindlegem and delay my protobelt just to rush that sweet sweet CDR. otherwise just get the protobelt.
Example build during the mid game.
Protobelt to rock that early 30%.
Rabaddon's is core late game item. Take this build with your 20 cdr runes. Optimal build vs tanky teams thx to that void. This is my favorite build. The MS from luden's feels so good.
Abyssal for when you gettin splatted by mages. That means you take sorcs instead. Take this vs squishy teams.
This build makes you slightly more durable than the luden's alternative. You sacrifice a tiny bit of dmg however.
[PENETRATION( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) INTENSIFIES] take this vs squishy teams with your 20% at 18 runes if they have nothing you really gotta zhonyas for.

Situational Items

When they have 2+ AP or if you just really need some MR. This would replace void staff because if they have more than 2 mages then they probably don't have that much MR. Unless they do for some weird reason in which case replace rylais.
DO NOT GET THIS EVER!!! If you get this piece of shit Item I swear to fucking god i'm going to strangle someone. Every time some shit vlad buys this my autism grows stronger. Read the author's notes below for the full details as to why this is a shit item on him
Mix and mingle all the CDR alternatives. Play around with the rune setups to figure out where the sweet spot of durability + damage fits you.

A few things to note:

Patch 5.2 aka the day of reckoning for DFG. Still one shotting squishies doe but the mid game burst is nerfed without dfg.. late game burst still the same just not overkill on squishies anymore and more kiting i guess.. fuck you rito. when the new 120AP 10% cdr item gets here, itll be the new replacement probably.

Edit: Patch 5.5 Luden's Echo works great on vlad! 3285.png

1056.png Doran's Ring on Vlad??? WTF???

Lately i've been experimenting with it after a friend of mine suggested it. It works really well. Here are the tradeoffs when compared to amp Tome: you get 5 less AP but you get 60 bonus HP which makes up for the loss in AP thanks to your passive and it being cheaper allows you to carry an extra potion. In my opinion it gives you a much stronger early game than the tome and the wasted mana regen is pretty negligible. WORTH IMO

3065.png Why is this item shit on Vladimir you ask?

To put it plainly, you're playing a mage, with massive AP ratios, and a massive ratio on his healing. There is no need to build more tankiness on a mage that already gets massive amounts of health from building pure AP. A mage's natural counter is a target with high health because it is difficult to burst them in one rotation of spells. Vlad's advantage is that he can forgo building additional defensive stats because he already gets high health from building offensively. Learn to use pools effectively and learn positioning to remind yourself of your role. You are not a frontliner although you do have the ability to engage much like a lissandra (except with flash) thanks to your pool.

To top things off, using your pools and zhonya's to dodge spells should allow you a lot more survivability vs AP burst than any other mage. Your healing is already insane without it (as shown below in the video) so you're essentially just trading your AP for a little more health. The trade-off isn't worth it because you lose a massive amount of damage, when considering the magic resist reduction it gives as well.

Compared to Abyssal Scepter, the massive amount of damage you lose for the tankiness you get from building spirit visage is not worth it while you're supposed to be playing a MAGE not a Tank. Pick a fucking tank if you want to tank.

Now that abyssal gives CDR, there's even LESS reason to ever build a retard visage. Vlad gets plenty tanky with a rylai's and the resistances from abyssal/zhonyas, and even moreso with the new protobelt if you really want.

And since vlad just got reworked, take a look at this DANK ass healing.

KEEP IN MIND THIS FOOTAGE WAS RECORDED BEFORE HE RECEIVED THE BUFF TO HIS EMPOWERED Q HEALING AS WELL

I double dare you motherfucker. Find me a good reason to give up a huge chunk of damage for a bit more healing.

Since WotA was removed, Luden's is a more attractive first pickup, you don't really want to forego the 10% cdr though so be sure to pick up a codex as your first item before you work on that sweet luden's or rylais.

VS

Ahri

Medium

After her buffs this bitch pokes and pushes you in a lot harder in the early levels. At lvl 9 make this sexy fox yours. You don't have skillshots so don't worry about her ult

VS

Akali

Easy

Don't let her walk up to you and you're fine but don't underestimate her burst. If she drops shroud you stand in it and spam E, Q her when she shows herself (better be quick)

VS

Anivia

Easy

You outsustain her plain and simple so unless you walk into every single Q pre-6 you're fine. At 6, dodge Q go in for a kill. Lvl 9, lol...

VS

Annie

Medium

She hurts like a fucking bitch. At lvl 6 you will get fucked up. Play safe unless you get ahead

VS

Azir

Medium

He will poke you like a bitch. Early can be a little tricky but eventually you'll outtrade him and outsustain him. You can delete him pretty easy if he's dumb and gets in your range but a good azir won't let that happen. Go with the pussy start.

VS

Brand

Medium

His poke outranges you hard. He also bursts harder. You can avoid his damage however, pool his stun circle around him juke his W w/e. Out play him and you can win a fight easy.

His % hp shred passive will also hurt you since you're vlad

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Dodge Q's and Q her. She has no sustain so if you do well you'll be fine. At lvl 6 you can burst her be sure to pool before she ults so you can get your combo out first otherwise her poisons gonna fuck you while you're pooled as well as ignite.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

His sustain is better than yours early. If he's tanky he can shrug you off and farm. If he lands a Q you're fucked cuz you aint pooling once he silences. If you're low and you get Q'd - RIP. Just remember he's melee and you have flash to make plays so dodge his shit and you're good.

VS

Diana

Easy

She's melee and has no sustain. You should be fine. At 6 however, she's like a tanky akali so prepare your asshole. Play safe from 6-9, at 9 she better prepare HER asshole.

VS

Ekko

Medium

He'll outtrade you in most cases. Pool his Q and he loses a good chunk of his burst if he tries to all in you. In most cases, even if you don't see his W coming, you can predict where it's going to land usually. If you fail at this you're gonna need to pool it or it'll wreck you. You'll probably just be forced to farm up early but he doesn't have much kill potential on you unless you try to trade. His passive is broken as fuck tbfh. In most cases he'll just smack you then run away at the speed of sound so don't even bother chasing. Nigglets run fast.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Hard

He fucks you in the butt plain and simple. Don't try to pool his drain cuz that shit goes through. Silences and fears for days so you'll never pool.

VS

Fizz

Medium
You outsustain him so you should be fine unless you get ganked. At lvl 6, if you pool his shark like a pro you should win the fight. At lvl 9 you should win fights unless he ganked and got fed. Try not to let him touch you cuz his w fucks up your heals

Sidenote - Fuck this fag. If you play him you are scum.

Edit: RIP fizz 5.2 this little shit no longer instagibs you or ignites you for free huzzah!! still medium cuz AD fizz shark still deadly

VS

Gragas

Easy

His sustain is inferior to yours (slightly) however he's tankier so that makes his and your sustain about equal. Pool his Q's if they'd be fatal. His ult will put you in a bad spot if you get ganked unless you manage to pool it like a pro. overall he's melee, poke him make him your bitch and all in him once he's like half with your ult and ignite.

Edit: RIP mid AP mage gragas :(

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium
He pushes you in and pokes you pretty hard. It's easy to kill his turrets and oom him but early it's kind of a pain. Later on he's easy as with most vlad matchups. He has low kill potential on you. You can dodge all his shit easy with pool and he has no escapes from your aids

VS

Jayce

Medium

He pokes harder than you early. At lvl 6 you can all in harder than him, at lvl 9 you make him your bitch.

VS

Karthus

Easy

Lol... dodge Q's, harass him, all in when ever you want. He's weak in lane if you dodge Q's, especially if you're outsustaining him, which you will. Enjoy the lane.

Pool whenever you want, but usually you won't need to. Try saving it for his ult. Hue

VS

Kassadin

Easy

His damage early game isn't very good so you can outsustain him. Just don't be a pussy and trade with him. Post 6 push him in, you should have revolver by then so he should be easy to trade with. Try to trade with him as often as possible otherwise he'll only trade when it's convenient for him (i.e. when his shield is up).

VS

Katarina

Medium

Try pooling her ult of course. She outdamages you early. If she ganked and got fed not even your lvl 9 will help.

VS

Kennen

Easy

You can win if you dodge his Q's. His autos are better than yours especially with his W proc. Pool his ult, if he uses E aggro pool it, that's 1 less charge of his passive on you which means he cant W unless he has a proc ready or he has to land a Q.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

Fuck this bitch. Ask for ganks or lane swap. Not even your lvl 9 will save you. Silences to fuck up your pool and she out damages your sustain. Late game though, she's your bitch.

Edit: Ever since they removed her silence she's not as oppressive as she used to be. You can actually trade and outsustain her but she can still oneshot you at lvl 6 (if you're dumb and don't pool lol) and she's hard to kill if she dashes away.

Good leblancs are still terror but shes easier to deal with since she doesnt have a silence anymore.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

Longer range poke but no sustain. Harass her all in her at 6. She can't avoid your ult damage unless she ults herself towards the end because your ult lasts longer than hers. If she E's in for harass you can handle it with your sustain no sweat.

VS

Lulu

Hard

This bitch will make your laning phase hell. Pretty much any champion that has ranged auto attacks worth a damn do. She'll shield so you can't trade and her autos will just poke away at all your health and she has the range to do it all easily. Really hard to retaliate because of her shield and polymorph. There's really no hope for this lane unless she's stupid as shit and sucks or you get a good jungler camp you. Basically worse than orianna during the lane but you outscale her. Play like a pussy.

VS

Lux

Easy

Lol. Troll pool her, you win. I love playing against luxes. Even if she does snare you just pool and troll her ult. Enjoy it. She has no escapes so feel free to all in at 6

VS

Malzahar

Hard

You gon get fucked at 6. His damage is better than yours early at all stages of the game, his space aids also goes through your pool. Beat him in teamfights.

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

He's tanky and has good burst. Since his ult is %hp you're gonna get fucked up. This lane can slowball very easily in one direction so try to outplay, get a small advantage at least and you'll win.

VS

Morgana

Easy

Farm lane. Boring.  Won't die, won't get a kill. Gank or something, idfk.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

Dodge and troll pool her spears and you win. If she goes in for cougar turn on her and you'll out damage her. Don't be pussy and you'll win.

VS

Orianna

Hard

You gon get fucked. playing against this bitch makes me want to kill myself. dodge or afk because you're not playing anyway unless she sucks really bad or you had a really, really, really good jungler to camp the crap out of her effectively.

VS

Pantheon

Easy

Sustain beats poke and you have both. However all in beats sustain so it's kind of tricky. You won't really die early on to him unless he got fed so just heal up with pots and start with the pussy cloth. Your Q > his Q. Early though, his all in is better than yours. At lvl 6 you can all in him after a bit of poke.

VS

Riven

Medium

Try and poke her. She has no sustain so play safe. Not even will your lvl 6 all in beat hers. At lvl 9 you're in a better shape unless she got fed off you or a gank.

If you know you're vs a riven you better take cloth armor and rush an armguard. you can still skip zhonyas and get wota though, but if you dont take a cloth early you're gonna have a bad time.

VS

Ryze

Medium

He beats you pre-6. At lvl 6 you can all in him. Your lvl 9 makes no difference. He's a strong late game champ as you.

VS

Swain

Hard

His E and Q both go through your pool. If he snares you, you're fucked. His lvl 6 beats yours. Only thing that can save you is getting an early kill so you can dominate once you're 9. Don't be afraid before 6. You can eat an E, pool his W if you have to and get away from his Q

VS

Syndra

Medium

She outranges you and outdamages you. You have sustain to survive early though. At 6 you can all in her. Be wary of her ult at lvl 6 all ins. If you manage to pool if you'll win easy, if not then you'll win barely. Late game she will shit on you if you don't dodge her cc so beat her in teamfights.

VS

Talon

Medium

Poke him hard. Since Talon lost his silence, it's pretty easy to pool his burst as soon as he jumps you, unless he's a good talon and baits out your pool first. When facing good talons it's really hard to find a good time to pool in reality since his damage isn't really combo dependent, however after he uses his E is typically the best time since you also waste potential bonus dmg he could've done on you because of cutthroat's damage amp.  In lane you'll outsustain him so you should be fine. His lvl 6 is stronger than yours. You win at lvl 9.

VS

Teemo

Medium

Lvls 1-5 you gon get fucked up if you don't poke back. Do pussy boots start and outsustain him. All in him pre-6 if you get him to half. He WILL go for poke so make sure you trade. Post 6 he's food.

VS

Twisted Fate

Medium

Early game he can poke and cheese you but later on he's easy. Pool his stun pool his q, w/e you win straight up.

VS

Veigar

Easy

Poke him, all in him at 6. If you get stunned, you're gonna lose the fight unless you manage to pool his W and even better if you get lucky and pool his ult. He's squishy so you can win. Late game though, if he catches you you - RIP (of course, he's fucking veigar).

VS

Viktor

Medium

He outranges you. His burst is strong. Nothing you can really pool unless you get lucky and pool his ult since his W is easy to run out of in most cases. His laser is instant at the initial point so pooling it will be hard, this however does mean that he'll be in range for your combo so make sure you trade. If he tries to poke with the laser you should be able to dodge it easy without W unless it was an instant short range one. If he drops a W on you and think you won't make it through it, pool it.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

Why you playing Blind? Skill match, of course.

VS

Xerath

Medium

He outranges you hard so poking him is going to be hard. You won't really be able all in him unless you flash but then he'll flash so ask for ganks if you want a kill. This is a farm lane. If he tries to combo you, pool and walk away.

VS

Zed

Medium

Zed has very high all in potential and high poke. Very easy to outplay however, pool his ult before it lands and it'll make it go on cooldown without applying the effect. just don't drop below half while laning vs him because it's very easy for him to kill you thanks to his passive even if you pool the ult. just remember that he's also squishy, probably expected you to go top so there's a chance he didn't bring MR.

VS

Ziggs

Hard

Annoying as FUCK. Outdamages your sustain early so ask for ganks. Try to pool his ult if you didnt already get fucked from his basic combo. At lvl 9 you're in a better shape though.

Setting Up The Flash Bomb Combo Back to Top

Pre-6 you gotta poke them down to about 50%~ before attempting it. (Lower if they bring barrier or something)
Post-6 you can do this when they're at around 70%~

> Prepare your 3rd Q by Q'ing a minion or something.
> When your Q is nearly off cooldown (2~ seconds or less) begin channeling your E
> As your E reaches full charge, flash into your victim while still charging it.
> Drop your ultimate, ignite, empowered Q, and that spirit bomb on their ass in one swoop
> Walk away as the calculated hemoplague detonation finishes them off or run with them while you wait for your cooldowns to secure the kill.

Because you have to hold onto your E key while you're channeling, it might be difficult to position your hands to do so. Either mentally prepare your combo and rearrange your fingers so you can pull it off right or change key binds. Just know that it's tricky to do since you have to actually hold onto your E key.

Don't be afraid to try this combo vs entire teams. Your pool + Zhonya's gives you so much time of untargetability that your team can often do tons of damage while your ultimate is up to clean them up before you have a chance to die. Even times when I do this solo I end up killing at least 2 of them before I die. Everyone always underestimates Vlad's burst, especially now that he's got a fuckton more of it with his rework.
