Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png
Now that you're able to flash while in pool, there is no reason not to take flash.

You're left with four viable options for your second summoner spell.
14.png3.png6.png12.png

14.png
Take ignite when the lane is in your favor. Take this summoner because it gives you the kill potential that would not be there if you had taken exhaust or ghost.

3.png
Take exhaust when the lane opponent is AD such as Zed, Yasuo, Riven, Fiora or has burst. (syndra/fizz)

6.png
Take ghost when the lane is not in your favor. Ghost takes away some of your kill potential in lane but makes up for it in mid/late game team fights.
12.png
Take teleport when you know you're going to be harassed and shoved under lane. (azir/tf) patch 5.22 (teleport is still good mid)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've been taking ghost flash a lot recently and like it but I still believe it's still based on preference.

You could go 12 into resolve but I really like feast to sustain the early game w/ a little bit of extra damage but the stats from resolve are also really good on paper, havn't tested it out yet, when I do, i'll update but i'm eyeing...

Runic Armor
Insight

18 ferocity is garbage... Stormraider's surge is so dam good mid game + 45% Cdr. I see people circle jerking Thunderlord's decree but its not even close to the amount of utility you get from SS.

Early game, you' wont be able to proc it because no way you can auto e q and survive with your 9 ap until level 7+.
Mid game, you do an extra 200 damage to your combo, which would be an extra 500 if you keep up with them with SS. (SS will proc off of e+q at 4 stacks unless you're really behind but at that point, you probably lost anyway).

Passive - Crimson Pact
Amazing passive that gives Vlad some extra HP/AP. (More about this in the build section)

Q - Transfusion
Basically what defines Vlad. This ability gives Vlad the ability to harass, dps and sustain. If you can safely auto for a cs in lane, Do so because as soon as you use this in the early laning phase, the cool down is so immense that they will punish you hard for not being able to trade back. If it is a hard match up,spam it as much as you can to sustain your hp to save your potions. After level 7, it is pretty spammable so you can use it to harass and sustain.

All in all, if it is easy/medium match up, prior to 7, use this mainly to harass and sometimes sustain.
If it is hard match up, prior to 7, use this to sustain the poke that you do receive.

W - Sanguine Pool
To start, do NOT use this to deal damage. This is your get out of jail free card in exchange for 20% of your current health. That being said, in team fights, it is more efficient to use it when you are lower hp but that does not mean tank a Syndra ult because you want to be more efficient. Furthermore, you recover hp equal to a percentage of the damage dealt so after you complete zhonyas, look to pool under as many people as you can while reposition in mid/late game team fights. (Prior to zhonyas, most of the time its better to use it to avoid damage/cc and reposition) Lastly, you can use this to set up ganks for your jungler because it does provide a slow but be careful for counter ganks.

Note- You may want to pool preemptively if they have an instant cc such as Annie W/R.

E - Tides of Blood
This spell may be a bit confusing but basically, its a short range aoe non targeting spell that uses Vlad's hp to do damage. Everytime you use E within a given time, you acquire a stack. (Caps at 4) When you acquire stacks, the damage, health used and regen from skills all go up. Indeed, the benefits outweigh the health used so don't be scared to spam this after 9. (Q Cool down to low, and you'll be just chunking yourself of HP)
Nevertheless, after level 9, it will be easy to keep this at 4 stacks. Always have this at four stacks prior to a mid/late game team fight because this ability is 1/3 of your DPS.

Note- When they shove on your turret in the early stages of the game, a helpful hint would be to E the caster minions with 0 stacks to put them at auto attack / cs range after the tower hits them once.
Note- Always E before your Q because you will regen more :)
Note- You can E Flash.

R - Hemoplague
This is the reason Vlad is so potent in team fights. Amplified damage + delayed nuke is insane. Generally, you want to ult as many as you can for your team to benefit from the amplified damage. However, if you have a dive comp, I would suggest ulting the carry + one more. (Most plausible situation) Obviously, you would want to hit as many as you can but the squishy carry will rarely be in the same radius as the front line. If you're peeling back in teamfights, feel free to ult 3+ Tanks as you guys as a team disengage.

    Rush this after CDR Boots
    READ BELOW FOR ORDER!

Situational Items

Rabadons - Enemy not tanky Liandries - Enemy is tanky Void Staff - Enemy has a lot of MR

I like having 1200 first back but you will not always have that luxury
If you do have 1200, get the revolver. If not, Ionian boots.

Against AD match ups

If you need zhonyas, keep the abyssal at a negatron/null mantle. If not finish the abyssal then build rylais and finish off with one of the last 4 items and build zhonyas whenever.

Void for MR stacking (happens often now)
Rabadons for raw damage (Vs. squishy)
Liandries vs. 3+ Tanks
Finish zhonya's whenever.

Liandries vs. 3+ Tanks
Finish zhonya's whenever.

1054_32.png Feel free to throw this in when you back with something like 1100 gold. It is better to get this + ioninan than Amp tomb + ionian. The reason I don't like this item first is because if the jungler ganks you, you do not have the potions necessary to safely farm in lane. You will be forced back and lose the lane only because you were not able to purchase enough potions.
3285_32.png Garbage
3020_32.pngNo. Especially with cheaper ionia.
3111_32.pngThey have so much CC! No. You have pool + Zhonyas + can get a QSS.
3140_32.pngFor suppresses or ridiculous silences like cho-gath w

3065_32.png Not as efficient as abyssal scepter. The health regen it gives is paralleled by the AP the abyssal scepter gives. You don't need this when you have pool + Zhonyas. Also the 10% CDR is not needed. Could see it to be viable if you run AP/level 18 but thats not as efficient as running the CDR Glyphs.

I'm getting a lot of complaints about spirit visage so let me be more clear. I always run CDR Glyphs and always run CDR Boots. Therefore, the 10% Given by visage is just a waste of a stat and therefore look to Abyssal for increased tankiness and DPS.

3083_32.png But it scales with passive! Nice. You gained 20 AP from this. No. Horrible.

What your late game should look like.

VS

Aatrox

Easy
Champ is horrible. Don't get hit by his Q and he has no all in potential.

VS

Ahri

Medium

Skill based match up.

Avoid Q/E. Use my tip on E to cs under turret. After 7, you can sustain some his poke but make sure you are consistently above 75% health or he can R to all in you. You can get Null mantle to make it more in your favor but should leave it there and finish zhonyas to provide you with the teamfighting utility.

VS

Akali

Medium

Should be fine prior to 6. As soon as he hits 6, if you are pushed, it is easy to bait for your jungler. If that does not work, ask for your jungler to come unfreeze your wave. I recommend the early 1057_32.png. Don't let him stack a Q on you then proc 2 Q's with 1 R.
Try to manage your wave as close to your tower as possible.

VS

Anivia

Easy

Could be medium if you can't dodge his Q prior to 6. Anivia's early laning is horrible, just like yours. After 7, you outscale her. You can tank some of her R E damage but not frequently. Make sure your health is above 60% consistently or you are in danger of being bursted IF he has ignite.

VS

Annie

Hard

He can almost 100-0 you when he hits six. Also don't trade him as his base damage on his Q and W will out trade you hard. I recommend an early negatron and then finish your core of Ionian + Revolver and it should be pretty easy after 9. Even with your negatron have your health above 80% as you WILL die from 2 Q's W R + ignite.

VS

Azir

Hard

A good Azir will destroy you. Try not to get greedy for cs. You'll sustain hard at 9 as usual but you will get outcsed, just don't die and you should slowly creep back in gold after 9. Its okay to fall behind in this matchup as Azir's roam potential is pretty bad

VS

Brand

Hard

This match up is extremely difficult prior to 7.
Try to bait his W and then go in for CS after his W is down. The early negatron will be helpful to sustain his poke. Also, I recommend an early dorans shield as well. You will be down on CS but it is not a big deal as brands mid game transition is not as strong as yours.

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

Don't stay in E Range if he Hits a Q. After 7, it should be easy to sustain his poke. Don't walk into his ult or you are dead. Recommend null mantle.
Don't be scared to miss a CS early because Cass's damage at 2 is insane. You'll be burning 2 pots the moment you get caught out of position level 2.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Don't walk into range for his W. Pool his Q if you sense his jungler is ganking. Just farm until 9, and there is no way he can kill you unless you overextend into a support roam or jungle gank.

VS

Corki

Medium

Avoid his Q auto poke. Farm to 7, you will outsustain his damage. Neither of you really have kill potential but you'll outdps him in mid/late game fights.

VS

Diana

Hard

EARLY NEGATRON!

Kind of like akali, should be pretty easy to farm and harass a little prior to 6 but as soon as 6 hits. Get a jungler to unfreeze your wave or gank for you as it is easy to bait them into R'ing to you.

Try to manage your creep wave near your tower. Can survive an all in if you are above 90% hp.

VS

Ezreal

Easy

Be careful of the level 2 all in. Apart from that, dodge his poke and you will outsustain him after 7. You can get away with going seekers after Ionian and revolver

VS

Fiora

Hard

Seekers + Dorans shield ASAP.

Stay at full hp and away from his Q all in range. Again, ask jungler to gank/unfreeze the wave at level 6. Don't die or it snowballs uncontrollably.

VS

Fizz

Hard

Hard but should be even lane. After he is 6. A good fizz will R in the middle of his Q so when you see he is about to Q, just pool his fish. An early negatron + dorans shield is recommended. Keep up in CS. Avoid his E Splash damage and poke him hard early.

VS

Galio

Easy

No kill potential. Just farm, Galio will be outperformed by you in terms of damage.

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

He has absolutely no kill potential unless you tank level 6 W. Avoid his E and its almost impossible to get hit. Heimer is vulnerable to ganks and you outsustain his poke/ turret damage starting at level 7.

VS

Karthus

Easy

His poke is a joke compared to your sustain. Shove the wave starting at level 7 and you can begin farming wolves/wraiths. Its hard to kill him though because of the range of his Q.

VS

Kassadin

Easy

He has absolutely no kill potential as you can sustain back up when his cooldowns are down. Just keep poking with E Q when he walks up.

VS

Katarina

Easy

Stay above 70% HP. and he can never all in you. Don't think that just because you have pool, you are safe as 70% of Katarina's burst comes from q e w ignite. If he starts spinning with 60% hp. you can ult E Q ignite, E Q for a kill.

Nerfed --> Easy matchup

VS

Kennen

Medium

Avoid early Q as the poke is pretty insane. After 6, don't allow him to be close to you with two stacks of passive on you or you will be chain stunned. After 9, it's pretty easy to outharass him / out sustain his poke.

VS

LeBlanc

Medium

Avoid the level 1 W auto poke.
Avoid the Level 2 Q W auto poke.
Avoid his chains.

This matchup is extremely difficult. Leblanc is a really dumb champion. Play passive until you get negatron + level 7+ to sustain his poke or a good leblanc will solo kill you 5 times after you die once.

Changed to medium because nerfed --> Skill matchup

VS

Lissandra

Medium

Avoid his Q's early. You can pool when you see his animation on R to avoid it pretty easily. Should be relatively easy after you hit 7+

VS

Lulu

Medium

Stay above 60% HP or he E Ignite Q for a kill. If he runs heal/barrier, you're pretty safe above 50% HP but do try to hit the 60% threshold

VS

Lux

Easy

Even if he hits a Q, you can pool his E R all in. You outdps her late game and outsustain his damage after 7. Pretty linear lane.

VS

Malzahar

Medium

Stay above 80% HP or he can all in you. I recommend a QSS after your core 4 items. Negatron rush should be implemented into your build path. Avoid his Q early.

VS

Morgana

Easy

Farm under turret prior to 7. After 7 you can push back by spamming E. Please note that your pool does not block the stun/damage from the second proc of morgana's ult. Pool preemptively if you see her walking up after she landed a snare. (Shes not going to walk up to auto a Vlad)

VS

Nidalee

Medium

If he lands a Q, and you're below 50% Health. I suggest you W his enhanced Q. Should be able to out sustain his farm after 7. You can kill him after 7 as you harass him.

VS

Orianna

Medium

Avoid his Q W poke early. Easy to pool his ultimate as the delay in the animation is immense. Can out sustain after level 7. Don't try to trade early as her shield + auto attack does quite a bit. Don't necessarily need a null mantle but would recommend it if its convenient for you to buy.

VS

Riven

Hard

Rare to see it mid in this meta but if you do. Stay back prior to seekers or he can all in you or force you to pool and win the trade because you pooled. You should win just by raw dps and tankiness after level 9.

VS

Swain

Hard

Dumbest lane I have ever played. You will be behind until level 9 without a doubt. Rush negatron. Never attempt to trade because his e q auto will 3x trade you. Try to Q the wave to sustain. Let him push. A helpful hint is to stay near your casters and bait his W and pool it. This will allow his wave to push on yours because he damaged your casters.

VS

Syndra

Medium

Dodge his abilities prior to 6. Hard to trade prior to 9 because she outranges. I suggest an early negatron but do not finish abyssal as you can zhonyas his ult. After 9, it should be a breeze to outsustain his poke but it will still be hard to get in range to poke. Go in to trade only if he doesn't have blue buff.

VS

Talon

Hard

Stay back after 6. Should be easy early game. After seekers + level 9, you can go in for some Q damage as it will be hard for him to 100-0 you.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

You can pool his stun card. Easy to avoid him setting up a gank for his jungler. After 7, it will be extremely easy to poke as he can not sustain Q'ing the waves forever.

VS

Urgot

Hard

Don't get hit by E and there will be no problems. Early seekers is a must as if you do get hit by E, you don't want half of your hp pool gone. If you are below 60%, pool the Q poke after the E has landed. Don't over extend after hes level 6 or you are dead.

VS

Viktor

Medium

Viktor has ridiculous burst. Early negatron is a must. Should be easy to sustain his poke after level 7/9 + Negatron. Pool his W Stun and you should be golden.
Skill matchup

VS

Xerath

Medium

Early game will be somewhat difficult but made easier because of the MS quints + boots start. Don't really need MR as this is a somewhat easy lane as soon as you get sustain.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Don't get knocked up after 6 or it will be hard to escape. Also, don't over extend too hard past your minions or he will just E to you and out trade by just auto attacking you. Can kill after 9 as you sustain with seekers.

VS

Zed

Medium

People say its an easy match up because you can pool the ult which is true but zed's W E Q poke when you walk up to cs perfectly outranges yours and you will take a lot of harass. After seekers + hextech/ionian, you should be able to win this lane. Don't expect to be invulnerable at 6 though because you can get all inned as a good zed will wait for you to pool.

VS

Ziggs

Medium

Don't make the way you cs linear and it will be hard for ziggs to poke you. It will be a pretty hard lane prior to 7. Dorans shield is recommended.

Helpful Hints to Emphasize TLDR Back to Top

You often get pushed to your tower in the early game. At level two, put a point in E and E the casters at 0 stacks in order to attain the cs after the tower has hit it once.

Prior to Zhonyas, mainly use W to reposition and occasionally cc
After Zhonyas, mainly use w to do damage and cc. (Partly due to the fact that its most likely a teamfight)

You can E Flash.

Keep E at 4 stacks.

General Kill Combo is R E Q W E Q (+Ignite)

Unexpected kill combo is E Flash, (R while E particle is traveling for amplified E and fast burst), Q Ignite.

PLEASE E THEN Q IN TEAMFIGHTS.

You heal more from Q.
You do more dps (Q is longer range so a lot of the times if you q then e, theyll be out of range of your E...)

Why Pick Vladimir then? Back to Top

As you can see Vladimir has many hard match ups but it is misleading in that these hard match ups actually turn pretty easy if you successfully stall to level 9.

Why is Vladimir so strong?

Insane AOE DPS.
Insane sustain after level 7.
Skills don't use mana. Everything is spammable.
Unmatched pressure when flash is up in a team fight.
Slippery/hard to gank. (Safe laning phase)

Unfortunately...
No CC,
Hard to burst carries when summoners are down.
Horrible early game
Need to position well

Early Game Back to Top

Against a hard match up, prior to 7, use Q to sustain the poke/autos you do receive. After 7, the cool down on Q is low enough for it to be hard for the enemy to trade according to the cd of your Q. Therefore, you can use it to trade and then sustain the damage that you took with ease.

Against an easy/medium match up, try to cs with auto attacks as much as you can so you have pressure created from Q.

Middle Game Back to Top

After level 9, even if you take 300 damage in exchange for dealing 200 damage with a Q. You win the trade if you stay back for 5 seconds and Q two minions. You can now abuse the sustain Vlad has because of the low CD on Q to win every trade. At this point, if you are in a healthy HP range, try to have 4 stacks of E up at all times in order to pressure them even further. If they are 60% hp and you are level 9 an R E Q Ignite will almost certainly net you a kill.
Prior to having zhonyas, in a skirmish or mid game team fight, use pool to reposition. Before a fight starts, you must have 4 stacks of E or your overall damage in the teamfight is no where near the potential of where it could be.

Note, at 9, don't roam unless its an easy dive or counter gank elsewhere. 80%+ Of the time , I will shove mid as hard as I can if it is a tie lane and go to farm Wolves/Wraiths.

Late game Back to Top

There are basically two types of teamfights.

1. You engage on them
2. They engage on you

If they engage on you, peel back, ulting 3+
If you engage on them, try to ult a carry + as many other people as you can.

At this point, you probably have zhonyas, so feel free to use pool to deal damage/cc.

Split pushing is usually a bad idea but Vlad does have insane waveclear so you can start a slowpush with Vlad extremely easily. I advise you to clear a wave and then start grouping as Vladimir's teamfight is one of the strongest amongst the AP mages.
