Summoner Spells Back to Top

I usually take 14.png & 4.png.  Ignite for obvious killing reasons.  Use it early so your execute bite does more.  Flash is fantastic, flash flips on your laner into turret or onto carries late win games.  Only take 12.png if you know for a fact you can't win lane or you know they'll have a strong splitpusher lategame that will be tough to deal with.

Masteries Back to Top

18 in the Resolve tree is a must, unless you plan on playing damage carry bear.  For the Resolve tree, taking HP regen is better than taking %armor/mr because you won't specifically be building armor/mr.  You can get mad lane sustain with doran's shield/blade and this regen.  Reduced damage from champion basic attacks lets you win early trades. % health regen is fat, but I'd prefer to take 45 extra health because your bite will do more early, and it will make your passive heal for a bit more since that scales off max HP.  Tenacity and slow resist VS armor/mr for nearby champions is a toss-up, it depends on the comp you are facing.  For keystone mastery, Grasp of the Undying and Courage of the Colossus both seem to be equally viable options.  They provide similar benefits.  Grasp gives sustain in the form of healing in lane, while Colossus gives it in the form of shields when you flip.  Both scale off of max health which is good for Voli.  The difference is, if teamfights will take a while, grasp is better since it can proc every 4 seconds.  If they're going to be quick, Colossus gives you a fat shield for when you flash flip someone, so you can tank that much more before your team gets in the fray.

For 12, I see Ferocity being the best tree for this bear to steal honey from.  Attack speed is a winner for early trades, getting the three AAs requried to W quicker, and synergizes with your ult.  Feast is SUPER OP in lane.  IM TALKING SUPER combined with the HP regen mastery in Resolve. Scaling AD/AP and the 2% vamp/steal are both fairly weak masteries, but the 2% offers even more sustain in lane.  Battle Trance will shine in early and midgame for you.  You have to wittle down your opponent with AAs before you can kill with your Bite, so by that time you'll have the full 5% increased damage for the bite execution.  Same in midgame, you'll engage and fight for a while since you're tanky, and your strong base damages will have a big effect on carries when you have this mastery.

Start Frenzy(W), this skill is close to the highest level 1 damage in the game.  If used when the opponent is at 1/3 health, Frenzy will deal around 160 damage.  Take Rolling Thunder(Q) at level 2 to maximize kill potential.  Get Majestic Roar(E) at level 3 for the extra CC and minion fear to stop creep aggro.  From then on, max Frenzy(W).  Then Majestic Roar(E) second for higher AOE damage and a stronger slow.  Of course, level up your R whenever possible.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

good start against ranged top laners because you will be taking constant harass. Start this if you don't think you have much kill potential or know you'll take heavy harass as you last hit. The best starting item in general is doran's shield.
Start this if you know you can snowball pre6. AKA you're facing a melee champ that isn't a counter early
Start this if you plan to rush Tabi, they are the most OP boots in game, and highly beneficial to rush if facing an AD laner.
A decent start that provides sustain and a bit of extra damage. Take this if you think you have kill potential and want to sacrifice some sustain for damage a la doran's shield

Core Items

These are two core items, consider getting Sunfire instead of Dead Man's as well. Both have similar benefits. Only get randuin's first if facing Yas/Tryn for crit reduction
get triforce if you're snowballing hard, its most op offensive item on voli
I go tabi most of the time as the dmg reduction is OP, only get mercs if facing double AP Carries
this is a solid item for voli to increase his engage ability. However, it doesn't add much tankiness compared to other items. Great item if your team has another tank.
Sterak's syngergizes very well with your passive, you'll be unkillable for longer with the fat shield.
    For Yas/Tryn/Ashe
Either rush tiamat for a bit extra damage in lane to snowball and then finish this 1st, or get this as a 4th/5th item on it's own once you have some health for it to scale with

Situational Items

Wits End and BOTRK are good when your team lacks damage or has another tank. Both give Atk speed for more ult procs. Locket is solid item vs AOE magic damage.
Another alternative offensive item. Great synergy with ult. Also good to get if your team needs waveclear
very strong item imo. If you have this + sunfire and/or randuins the only person on their team that can hurt you is their ap carry. Focus on killing them and you will win fight.
Buy vs two AP or a spam mage, decent stats
STARTING

1054_32.png  is a good start in general, bonus HP for your W damage and passive healing.

1029_32.png is my other favorite start as I normally fast rush 3047_32.png.
VS AP start  1054_32.png and rush mercs or visage

BUY POTIONS - Throughout the whole laning phase have AT LEAST one 2003_32.png, and don't be hesitant to use them.  Good rule is to use 2003_32.png when you hit about 3/4 hp.  Use one at the beginning of an engage you plan to get a kill during if you think it will be anything close to an equal fight.

FIRST BACK PURCHASES BASED ON GOLD

         400-700:

           700-1100:  Finish 3047_32.png  or buy the whole thing+ 2003_32.png
            1000+: 1011_32.png + 1001_32.png OR 1029.png(if enough gold) + 2003_32.png

           AFTER

Rush3143_32.png vs yasuo/trynd, otherwise rush  3068_32.png , 3742.png , or 3748.png.  If most of their gold is on AD and they only have one AP, get another of those last 3 items.  Then get 3065_32.png or, if facing all AD, get3075_32.png. If you are the last one surviving and enemy team is ignoring you, get 3153_32.png as this provides %hp damage(useful for some dmg even when not building full damage) and another slow.

FIRST BACK VS AP LANER

           <400:  1001_32.png2003_32.png
           400-850:  1028_32.png + 1033.png(if enough gold) + 2003_32.png

           1400+: 3211_32.png

Rush 3065_32.png , or 3748.png if you're absolutely destroying them.  Buy the Health crystal first back so you have build versatility based on how the lane is going.  If facing double AP, make 3102_32.png your second or 3rd item.   3742.png is a solid second item in any case, the speed ramp up is big for engaging.  If facing double AP and you already have 3065.png and 3102.png, fill the rest of your build with 3068.png3742.png3748.png3022.png or 3083.png.  If your team is lacking damage, build 3068.png and 3748.png.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

Yet to play this matchup,  I don't think it would be too tough.  He'll sustain most of your harass, but you can stick to him with your Q and E.  You have more kill potential.

VS

Akali

Easy

You will outdamage her all through the laning phase.  You'll have to buy a pink to kill her in shroud, or slow her in shroud and wait to Q until she walks out of it.  Rush Spectres Cowl

VS

Alistar

Hard

This guy is crazy.  He can build ADC but survive forever due to his ult damage reduction.  You will outtrade him and kill him pre6 if he doesn't just disengage you right away.  Otherwise, good luck

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

All a skill matchup.  If you can dodge his skillshots you win, otherwise you lose.  His Ult pretty much makes your passive useless.  If you don't let him harass you with skillshots he won't get the chance to kill you.  If he does miss a skillshot, go hard on him because his Q and W are on long cooldowns

VS

Darius

Medium

Try to get a level advantage and kill early.  You do about the same amount of damage early on, but you're way tankier with passsive.  Once he's 6 it will be harder. if you have enough health from items to eat his true damage you can win a 1v1 and snowball lane.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Farm lane.  If you don't kill early, you will need turret flips to kill this sustain machine.  Its hard for you to kill him, but also hard for him to kill you.

VS

Elise

Hard

Her % health scaling dmg abilities hit hard.  Winning lane is very possible, you just have to outplay her.  Your fear works on her spiderlings.  If she uses an ability to CS, thats  your chance for a winning trade.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Her early game is weak.  She might try to time her parry on your flip so just run around her a bit if you still have time before your Q runs out.  You will win at least until first back, and likely the second one.

VS

Garen

Hard

Very similar to you.  Cooldown dependent, both have strong executes.  He can cleanse your slow with his Q.  Don't trade with him unless he just used his Spin, or you can turret flip.

VS

Gnar

Hard

Tough matchup, rush Tabi. You will win trade if he lets you flip him, but he'll prob just bounce away.  You'll need to burn flash to flip him.  Which he'll either have to flash out or die.  Once flash is burned, you need ganks to kill him unless he's not smart.

VS

Hecarim

Hard

Tough matchup, his Q allows him to constantly win small trades.  You need to all in him at level 1 or 2 with bite, or this lane will slowly become in his favor.  If he doesn't have ignite, you can straight 1v1 him though due to your passive

VS

Irelia

Medium

You will win hard early.  Your health coutners her true damage.  Try to trade whenever possible. Once she hits levels 8-9, she will outtrade you because her W damage and heal are peaked.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

If you can dodge his knockup, you win trade.  Otherwise it's pretty even.  Try to dodge his Q harass, the range is deceivingly large.  You can flip him out of his ult wall.

VS

Jax

Medium

Against a good jax player, you'll never win lane.  But if they make any mistakes, you can snowball.   If he engages with his jump stun, DO NOT AA him.  Just slow him and walk away until stun is popped.  Once his dodge is down, you need to fight.  You can kill him so so easily when he doesn't have the dodge.

VS

Jayce

Hard

Haven't seen a jayce in a long time, but dorans shield is strong vs his poke.  His disengage is annoying.  You need to try to push for 2 and kill him otherwise he'll push and poke you down at turret.

VS

Kennen

Hard

Very annoying.  His comibined AA and spell harass are rough to deal with.  If you try to engage, he'll speed away.  But you can kill him if you stick to him.  If he uses speed boost to clear minions go in.  Try to bait his speed boost by walking towards him.  You'll likely need jungle help, or you'll need to flash engage on him.

VS

Kha'Zix

Easy

Stay around minions so you aren't isolated.  As long as your with minions, you can win a trade and potentially kill him.  Save your Q for when he jumps away once he realizes your damage.  Then flip him or flash flip him.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

So slippery, he's pretty anti-voli.  He has his execute in Q as well.  He can sustain most of your harass with his Safeguard.   Mobility makes tough to kill.  If he lets you stick for an extended trade, you will win

VS

Lissandra

Hard

She has tons and tons of harass.  Try to hit 2 first and run in for flip.  If you flash her Q you'll flip her and she'll be forced to flash or die to your W.  Higher levels are going to be rough if she doesn't let you get in flip range.

VS

Malphite

Medium

Try to keep his passive down with Majestic Roars(E) and auto attacks.  Dont spend too much mana on it though.  His Q allows him to run away from most engages, but if you get him to 1/3 health and he's running away, flash iginte bite him for the kill.

VS

Nasus

Medium

His passive sustain and whither make it hard to kill him.  If you can make him use whither by simply walking at him, go in with Q as soon as slow wears off to deal some heavy damage.  If his ult is active, he can trade with you pretty evenly because the whither attack speed slow gravely hurts your ult.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

Easy kills pre-6 unless she plays very passive.  Don't let her get in CS range, punish her ifshe does.  Once she's 6, she can just hop away.  Must try to kill early.

VS

Olaf

Easy

Easy lane.  Your health counters his true damage, your execute counters his increased attack speed at lower health.  Once he's 6, itll be tough to kill him when his ult is up.  But fight right when he gets back to lane because he can't escape your CC when his ults down.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Have never played this lane.  His early damage is even or better than yours.  This lane you'd be better served waiting until 6 to engage.  Once you have ult, you will outtrade him every time.

VS

Poppy

Easy

Haven'y played but, I don't forsee any issues at all with wrecking her.

VS

Renekton

Hard

I hate laning vs renekton.  Hate it.  He can sustain and burst for just as much as you, but he doesn't have mana to worry about.  Your only upperhand is your execute.  I never win lane against renekton unless my jungler helps or I get turret flips.

VS

Rengar

Easy

You outtrade him every engage.  Whenever he uses bola, you go in because he has no escapes.  Very easy lane.

VS

Riven

Medium

Very much a skill matchup.  Need to fight whenever any skills of hers are on CD otherwise it will be close.  About as 50/50 as they come.  If you can flash her ult active, you can win at 6.

VS

Rumble

Hard

Tough to deal with.  Rush Specture's Cowl and just farm.  He has movement boost and slows.  You need to outplay him pretty hard to win lane.  Call for ganks as he'll naturally push. Look to turret flip.

VS

Ryze

Medium

Start doran's shield because he will AA harass a lot.  Tough to engage because he can snare and walk away, but if he waits to long to snare you can still catch him.  If he uses snare to harass you can easily engage and win trade.

VS

Shen

Medium

Farm lane.  He has sustain and a shield.  Look to flip him out of his ult when he tries to enter teamfights.  You outdamage him all game but he's very hard to kill.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

Don't fight her while her Burnout is active or you will lose trade.  She doesn't have any sustain so slowly harass her by trading when any of her abilities are on cooldown.  You can flip her back as she tries to ult away if timed correctly.

VS

Singed

Hard

You can both flip each other, so that's fun.  Hard to kill him post level 3.  Just try to farm after that.  Very annoying lane.

VS

Teemo

Hard

You can max E instead of W for this so you have sure damage for ganks, his blind makes your Q not end up flipping them.  His blind also makes it take a lot longer to get 3 stacks for your bite.  You can outdamage him super hard if he lets you get close enough

VS

Trundle

Medium

He has high sustain, so you'll have to kill at 2 or 3, otherwise wait until 6.  Pretty even lane.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Look to kill him with your bite before he can get his ult off, the damage is usually higher than they expect.  If he does ult before you bite, save it for when his ult is off.  You can out trade him when he's not max fury.

VS

Udyr

Medium

Annoying sustain and speed boosts.  You will have a hard time killing him and vice-versa.  Try to outfarm him, or push hard and gank mid

VS

Vladimir

Easy

Run at him level 2 and you can force a flash or kill him.  If you run into flip after that and he pools, make sure you have E up to stick to him once he comes out of pool. Be aggressive.

VS

Warwick

Hard

His Q scales off of your max health, so it hurts.  His sustain is very high.  You likely will not kill without ganks.  He can slowly wittle you down and kill you though.  Call for ganks.

VS

Wukong

Easy

No issues winning this lane.  Just make sure to slow him and run away from his ult.  If you don't take too much damage from that you win everytime.  Don't use bite on his decoy! Otherwise no kill for you.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Start dorans shield or cloth 5. You will win all trades before he gets a complete item.  Rush tabi and you can still compete even mid-laning phase.  Zone him from cs and fight whenever possible.

VS

Yorick

Medium

Wait for his slow to wear off, then engage.  If you can flip him you'll win trade.  Your E can fear his ghouls, that reduces a lot of his damage.  Focus on engaging when he uses skills to harass.

VS

Zed

Easy

Your passive counters his ult because the damage is delayed, giving you time to regen.  You win all trades as well.

Introduction Back to Top

Hey everyone!  This is my first ever guide, comments and criticism appreciated.  I wanted to make one for my favorite champ volibear because I feel he is a solid toplaner that not many people think highly of.  I have a lot of experience at the Diamond level of playing him top, this season and last.  Please also check out the Gangplank guide I made! Thank you! :)

http://www.lolking.net/guides/317335

Laning Phase Strategy Back to Top

Level 1, just start to autoattack the creeps to gain Frenzy(W) stacks. Once you've killed 2 melee minions, autoattack once and then bite the enemy.  If their not in range to harass, don't worry about it.  Don't go too far in the minions to do it either as the creeps aggro will do a lot of damage.  Keep pushing for 2.  Once you've cleared the first wave,  your next minion kill will give you level 2.

If your opponent is still level 1, be ready to level up Q with a hotkey.  Start moving towards them, then last hit the creep to give 2 and level up Q as the minion dies.  Go flip the enemy and AutoAttack, moving with them between your attacks.  Ignite once they get to about half health, get in a couple more autoattacks and then bite.  You'd be surprised how much damage your bite can do.  Test your limits for damage.  I am sometimes still surprised with the kills I get.

Take Majestic Roar(E) at 3.  The slow increases your kill potential by allowing you to stick with them for more auto attacks before W execution.

IF WINNING LANE POST LVL 3:
First back buy giants belt if you have enough, otherwise go kindlegem.  At the least, a ruby crystal.  Bonus health gives you more damage. Be aggressive.  Taking minion aggro isnt that bad because you can fear most of them when you use Majestic Roar(E) on the enemy.  You can zone your enemy hard because your kill potential is so high.  Once you get your ult, if they don't have any escapes you will kill them easily.  You can 1v2 their jungler quite easily if you're ahead once you get ult.  Post 6 when I'm ahead, I just autopush and tell team to be ready to take objectives when their jungler comes top.

IF LOSING LANE POST LVL 3:If you don't get an early kill, try to freeze lane just outside your turret range and look to flip the enemy into turret.  If you do get the turret flip off, make sure to slow them right away.  You can still kill an ahead enemy quite easily as voli because you can build tank but still do a lot of damage early mid game.  Look to take advantage of your enemy's mistakes.  If they use a medium cooldown ability, engage bit and get out before it's back up.

GENERAL TIP: If your enemy disengages when you ult and you have no way of getting to them, auto attack the creeps to try and get bounces.  I have killed people that dash away by getting a couple ult bounces off of creeps.

Teamfight Strategy Back to Top

Evaluate the situation.  If your team is far ahead, look for a flash flip on any enemy teammember as your team will win the fight.  If the game is even or your team is losing, try to catch an enemy carry with a flash flip.  Just be sure your team is somewhere near to help kill them.

If you dont' engage the fight, you have to know what your role is.  If your AP or AD carry are more fed than the enemy AD or AP carry, focus on peeling for them so they can spit out more damage.  If the enemy carries are the fed ones, try to get to them and force them to burn their damage on you, or allow your team to focus them by using your CC.

You will be the primary tank,  your passive gives back HUGE amounts of health.  You can tank turrets for days.  Try to tank turret for your team whenever possible on dives.

General Top Lane Tip Back to Top

If you're losing lane hard, just getting zoned or dived, go roam mid or take dragon.  Roaming is the single best thing you can do if you're losing top lane by more than a little.
