Summoner Spells Back to Top

-Xerath is a long range mage and dosent benefit much from ignite. If you are in range to use ignite on Xerath you're typically playing him wrong (unless getting dove on)

-Flash is a no brainier because he's very immobile as a champion.

-TP Because it's straight up op and stops you from losing lane and adds better roaming, with the nerfs to TP I'm not sure you want to take it, but it could still be viable.

-Heal is if you think you need a defensive spell with a little mobility

-Barrier I think is personally the best right now on all mid lane mages.

-Cleanse is very strong vs things like Elise and other hard ccs only take in very certain match ups

-Ghost is very strong for roaming and extended chases or getaways

Masteries Back to Top

Xerath is very slow, and has a low mana pool. The biscuits really help out in lanning phase and works amazingly with oppressor and piercing thoughts, double edged sword is strong on Xerath, but with the addition of the new bounty hunter I feel it is not as good. Expose weakness is also very strong with all of Xerath's range and aoe so it really is up to personal preference.

-Passive this is basically to help you from going oom early game but can be easily exploited by his 525 range so you can't always hit enemy champions for the double mana regain and, I typically use it often in lane so my mana pool is large enough to survive a gank.

Q -Your Q is your main source of damage/ poke and csing it has immense range when fully charged so denying Xerath is hard  as he can cs from halfway through mid lane. Although it is a very high mana costing spell your passive and mana regn runes will help you use it more often. It is also very important to know that when you are channeling your Q you are slowed so while running if you want to Q back try to only use the instant cast.

W -Xeraths W actually is his highest damaging spell if you hit the center of it, so make sure you hit the center of it when stunning people as it also applies a massive slow. It also dosen't have a cast time so you can E and W Q at the same time basically 1 shotting carries or low hp players, or getting a snipe ready ult.

E- This spell has a sizable cool down and rightly so as it is very strong, as it increases stun length with distance so, try and make sure to hit junglers who're ganking the second it is in range. Also you can put a point in this spell at level 2 if you are afraid of getting ganked. And this kind of makes it possible for Xerath to get some early game kills like if someone takes a step under tower into a E W Q combo they're either forced to back or dead.

R- I usually use this as a finisher as you are rooted. In combat so its not that good to use in the middle of a fight as you can't cast any other spells. IT can be used to clear minion waves ,but  I usually don't unless i have 30% cdr or more. Also firing your shots super fast dosen't always work and this spell takes practices to land. Usually take blue trinket for snipes. I don't know what else to say it is kind of a hard to land ult it just takes practice. Also With Ryalis you can use this to help your teammates chase down kills.
After you get 2 levels into this spell and you are even mildly ahead you can start to just kill people with it but be sure to use your blue trinket if you lose vision!

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Core Items

    Obvious
This is honestly the best build for terms of staying relevant all game instead of the tear build. The tear build puts you in a power dip until later on and same with ROA.
With the news to Ryalis more damage is better I say take pen mask

Situational Items

These are very deffensive like vs a Zed Talon or maybe just some CC you need to avoid? get Zhoyans! now swifities have been hit with some nerfs but they help with roaming and not getting caught, now CD boots are strong if you need just 10% more cdr or something or maybe you need to flash all the time? take these!
If you die early or have to back before you can get important parts of your rylais pick up another dorans. Haunting guise is usually only built and finished if they are hella stacking mr and you need all the pen you can get.
I don't think this is very good anymore but if you're going for a full mana Xerath defiantly take this
Sometimes get this item want to be a bit faster? and need just a tad more burst for squishies? Take this it will help a lot but only if you need to speed.
With the way the new Tear items work I believe they are immensely powerful with Xerath as his mana cost are through the roof, Morrellos helps with the 20% cdr and new mana synergy with Archangels staff. Death cap is very strong later on with a full build and void staff is invaluable with all the magic resist items. Rylais is the best solo item on Xerath it makes hitting all his other spells so much better and makes kills easier to get for your team as your ult will now slow! and mages "new" stat is seeming to be hp so without this item you are super easy to chase down and kill.
3165.png   3108.png > 3802.png > 1052.png  unless you are having mana issues then get your 3802.png first! After that you should  3089.png and 3135.png are up to you and what is being built by the enemy team. ( I'd say 2 or more big mr items and go with Void staff)

If you don't want to wait till late game for the seraphs just rush a Morrello and then riyals because you need that mana.

VS

Ahri

Hard

Best general counter in the game for Xerath, she is so fast it is hard to hit your spells and even if you get her low enough to ult she'll just dash 3 times. You are also super squishy and she can kill you without landing a skill shot if she has ignite.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy

You have enough distance to just smash this guy, just watch out for I'm flanking you over walls and stuff

VS

Azir

Easy

Early game this match up is actually quite annoying since Azir is a lane bully and a zoner, but Xerath can still cs with his xeratharcanopulse.png  and make sure everytime a minion wave is under your tower you hit it for your mana regain and it will be ,because that's what Azir does. Although later on Xerath just dumps on Azir before Azir  can even hit you so just land those spells summoners!

With the Azir nerfs this matchup heavily favors Xerath again

VS

Cassiopeia

Easy

You are really never in rage of her ult without a 4.png so I wouldn't worry too much just sit back in that sweet spot and deny cs with a xeratharcanopulse.png and Cassiopeia is heavliy based off of chasing down her opponents with movespeed just hit her with a stun and run. ALSO her w doesn't really do anything special to you except deny flash!

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

This match up depends on how you use your range because Chos Q has a lot of range and you can get caught by it while trying to cs into a silence while trying to flash and get ulted. Xerath needs to make sure he is avoiding the cho Q to win this lane or go even poking is your strongest point.

VS

LeBlanc

Medium

This is just frustrating, she can dodge you easily and bully your weak early game and take advantage of you when you xeratharcanebarragewrapper.png so just watch out this lane is lame. You will probably have to zone yourself off of cs with the New Leblanc I have been finding this match up can go so so not to bad either way.

VS

Talon

Hard

This match up is very punishing and almost impossible to win if he hits 6. Also if your winning early game ganks are very easily for a Talon to set up or follow up on. If you get set in this match up try as hard as possible to not push the lane because Talon is the pinnacle of Xeraths defeat. the new items make this match up insane to play later on you will need zhoyans and some peel to survive

VS

Varus

Medium

Just a classic old poke off. Varus poke is very Similar to Xerath in the way that he has to charge range on his q, and he other options are also instant. Just play vs him like he is Xerath, but with engage.

VS

Veigar

Medium

This match up is very similar to Talon you can win before level 6 but their ults are more combat effective than Xerath's especially. now that he dosent just 1 shot aps You can win this but if you get caught by a stun you better hope you have cleanse!

VS

Vel'Koz

Medium

Vel'koz has higher early game damage and low mana cost in comparison, but you do out range him. Watch out for his level 6 all in he hits a sizable powerspike when your ult is honestly not very good in the lanning phase.

VS

Viktor

Easy

Viktor is a mid range mage, which lets Xerath just destroy him early on with dominate range and poke to force him back but with a nicely timed flash and ult Viktor can swing the match up in his favor for a fight or two.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

I believe Vlad is the best AP Ap counter in the game and it still is, but You do have a range advantage, I do not think he will ever die to you unless he messes up.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Yasuo's windwall can only block Xeraths E as his Q is a laser and not a projectile w and ult come from the sky. Yasuo also needs to get generally close to do his damage so just dodge some tornados and you will crush him if you poke correctly

VS

Zed

Hard

Zed can win this with a clean all in at level 6 but if you just make sure to dodge his Q's though minons you should be healthy enough to avoid a dive also try rushing a seekers arm guard. also Zed always teleports behind you when ulting so if you time it right you can stun him the second he ults and avoid a decent amount of follow up. Zed can poke failry well like Xerath though and cs easily under tower so pushing the lane dose not do much.

With all of this Zed is TOO strong right now ( nerfs coming though) probably just don't pick Xerath.

VS

Ziggs

Medium

Ziggs is very similar to you he has almost as much skill shot based damage, but he also has is passive so watch out as he will usually win early trades. Remember to never ult in front of Ziggs if he has his ult as he can basically just 1 shot you if you're standing still. Lanning phase is basiclly just a pushing fest whoever can push the fastest while poking, just understand your tower is very vulnerable so try to clean minions under tower as fast as possible.

General tips on Xerath Back to Top

During early game you are very weak, massive cool downs high mana cost the works. Although you have a very easy early game if you can play it right. Xerath is a cs monster with the ability to 1 hit minion waves from mid game on(as long as you're not too far behind.) Use early game to feel stuff out and by that I mean try and understand their dodging patterns so landing your spells is more calculated. One thing that really sucks is all of Xeraths spells are skill shot/placement spells, this means you have no guaranteed damage compared to most mages. last hitting is very similar to all new mages or reworked mages and they have 525 auto range, using you're passive early on with dorans should help out your mana problems.

Places to ward as Xerath : I always try and buy lots of pinks I ward the small river bushes , the ther side of the persons wall although I'm not a huge fan of warding the bush that touches the lane( I feel like its too late) these are good wards on both sides!

You need to be able to play with unlocked screen or learn how to: It is almost impossible to play Xerath well without unlocked you need to be able to see all the angles and see all your full ranges.I believe in locked screen you cannot see your full Q range.
