Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png
Mandatory for (almost) all squishy "mages": quick repositioning, gapcloser and escaping tool.

14.png
Normally the spell to go for kill pressure and lane dominance (and healing reduction).

12.png
For a safe game/passive farm lane and/or lots of side lane ganks.

6.png
Can be good for maneuvering fights; has a way lower cooldown than flash.

11.png
When you go jungle or manmode mid with Devourer.

Masteries Back to Top

For Season 6, 18/0/12 is the way to go. Let's take a look:

Ferocity Tree

- Sorcery > Fury for more ability & spell damage. Important for burst mages. 4% attack speed is close to nothing.
- DES for more damage, but no risk, no fun. You don't need the sustain on Lance Master AP 5.png.
- Oppressor is best with your E slow and Q knockup. Bounty Hunter only for jungler (ganks).
- Piercing Thoughts or Battering Blow: you deal hybrid damage (more magical), so 2/5 + 3/5 is good as well as 0/5 + 5/5.
- Fervor of Battle, since you auto attack a lot (adds physical damage). You get harder to itemise against. Deathfire Touch is also good because you main damage comes from your E; what you pick is up to you.

Resolve Tree

- Recovery for sustain in lane
- Explorer for faster side lane ganking (Tough Skin brings about 0 effect)
- Runic Armor is very nice to further increase your already high sustain. Otherwise Veteran's Scars makes you slightly more tanky (permanently).
- Insight is the best option for any "squishy" mage. You can flash more often. Only under 20% health, Perseverance is actually effective. But in this case, you should rather recall - or you will die quickly.

First Skill Point

Normally, start with W to withstand level 1 poke.
Take E if you want to go aggressive, careful of retaliation though.

Build Path

Max E first for increased damage, W second for better sustain (strong with attack speed).
Of course max R whenever you can. ;)

Important: W AP ratio lowered from 0.7 to 0.4 in Patch 6.4; got additional 0.2 AD ratio!

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Normal start
    aggressive start
    Safe start

Core Items

    Core Items
Best defensive item: MRES, HP, 20% increased healing
    good alternative to nashor's tooth

Situational Items

Start

Normally, I take a 1056.png as starting item. Since (Pre-)Season 6, 1082.png is a good aggressive option, since it gets stronger by getting kills and assists and 3041.png is built from it. 2033.png for a safe and high-sustain start; fine if you want to go for frequent trades.

Core Items

1301.png
Attack speed and movement speed is your best bet (homeguard is now removed anyway).

3115.png
More attack speed, ability power, 20% cooldown reduction and additional on-hit magic damage. Everything a serious Lance Master AP 5.png player needs. <3

3089.png
Nothing special, just tremendously increased overall damage as well as sustain. Good as 2nd or 3rd item.

3100.png
One of my favourite AP items. Since your only reliable damage ability is your E, this item can make things easy, especially in duels. Good as 2nd or 3rd item.

3157.png
Good as a defensive option with a nice active and a good amount of AP.

3065.png
Best defensive option. Health, MRes, 10% CDR and huge bonus of 20% increased healing, I mean, how cool is that?!?

Situational Items

3124.png
New passive which is extremely strong. Just like 3115.png, its passive on-hit damage scales with your AP. On top of that, it grants cleave damage at 8 stacks which can be devastating combined with high attack speed.
Slightly more expensive since Patch 5.23. Cleave range reduced from 450 to 350 with Patch 5.24.

3285.png
Grants a big movement speed bonus, which can help a lot. The passive gets charged by moving and auto attacking. Since your attack speed is rather high, it might be worth a shot.

3001.png
Nice overall item, but only worth if the enemy team has at least 2 AP carries. Btw, 3065.png is way better in terms of defense (and increased sustain).

VS

Ahri

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 8/10

She has sustain, burst and hard CC. Her ahriseduce.png is quite dangerous, be careful and dodge it.
If she has her ahritumble.png up, don't bother chasing her for the next 10 seconds, she'll just dash away.

VS

Akali

Easy

Difficulty: 3/10 - 5/10

An easier matchup. She can poke a lot, but you'll just sustain it back more than enough.
Always have a 2043.png on you; place it when she uses akalismokebomb.png so you can see her.
After 6, be careful when you're blow half health. She can have suprising burst.

VS

Anivia

Hard

Difficulty: 6/10 - 9/10

She has an incredibly annoying stun and an area slow. When you get hit by one of her CC abilies, her frostbite.png deals double damage. Her wall can set up nice ganks or prevent them, careful. Everyone forgets the wall.

VS

Annie

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 7/10

Her burst is really high, her stun is dangerous and more than annoying early on.
Her moltenshield.png deals damage every time you hit her, engage when her shield and stun aren't up.

VS

Azir

Easy

Difficulty: 2/10 - 4/10

Especially early on, he is all about farm and poke. Easily sustainable. His ult is annoying and prevents you from engaging on him. If you manage to jump on him, you win the trade.
Careful, an experienced player might push you into his turret.

VS

Brand

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 8/10

His burst is amongst the highest right now. If you can't manage to dodge his stun, you're dead meat. If he misses it, engage and poke him to death.
If he ults, stay away from any ally minion/champion or neutral monster. This prevents the bounces.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 8/10

Her poke is tremendous. Try to predict where she'll place her poison. That way, you can prevent a load of damage. Her cassiopeiapetrifyinggaze.png only stuns you when you face her, otherwise you'll get slowed.

VS

Diana

Hard

Difficulty: 8/10 - 10/10

If she gets even slightyl fed, you can't even dream of sustaining her incredible burst.
Post-6, it'll become really hard to kill her, her damage output is way higher than yours.

VS

Ekko

Hard

Difficulty: 8/10 - 10/10

He is quite mobile, has a long stun w/ shield, an area slow, all that combined with a "Fuck you I'm outta here" button. As long as you manage to not get hit by his stun, you can fight him. If you do, you're probably dead. So tey to predict it at all cost.
Also, juke his ekkoQ.png, or at least when it moves back towards him in order to prevent a second passive stack.

VS

Fizz

Hard

Difficulty: 7/10 - 10/10

High burst champions aren't your best friends, really. His fizzseastonepassive.png luckily doesn't apply "Grievous Wounds" anymore, good for you. Do not try to juke his fizzjump.png by E'ing onto an enemy minion, you need the damage.

Pre-6, you can duel him and will most probably, with his ult though, his burst his easily high enough to kill you when you're below 70% health.
You can kick him away with xenzhaoparry.png though, if he comes too close. Don't attack him prior to ulting!

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

Difficulty: 6/10 - 8/10

He will farm and poke all day long. Most junglers won't even consider ganking your lane when he set up more than one h28gevolutionturret.png.
Start with xenzhaobattlecry.png in order to sustain level 1 poke. You can go all-in at level 3, but only if he missed his stun.

In team fights, you can quickly kill him, if he doesn't have a 3157.png.

His burst from upgrade!!!.png enforced hextechmicrorockets.png can be surprisingly high, but try to juke sideways.

P.S.: when he isn't nearby, kill his turrets for additional sustain and gold.

VS

Jax

Hard

Difficulty: 11/10

You doom is calling...

VS

Karthus

Easy

Difficulty: 2/10 - 4/10

He literally counters no one. His wallofpain.png just reduces movement speed and MRes, not attack speed. Feel free to engage whenever you feel like it. An early all-in at level 3 (esp. w/ 14.png) will spell his doom, at least burn his flash/defensive summoner spell.

VS

Kassadin

Easy

Difficulty: 3/10 - 5/10

His burst gets high in late game. Until then, he can't really do anything against you. Starting with xenzhaobattlecry.png, you just sustain back whatever poke he brings upon you.

Pre-6, jump on him whenever you want, he can't do anything against you.
Post-6, you can still push him out of lane, but don't bother flashing after him, he is too mobile.

VS

Katarina

Medium

Difficulty: 4/10 - 7/10

If she isn't careful, your xenzhaocombotarget.png or xenzhaoparry.png will end her ult really quickly.
She will poke with bouncingblades.png starting at level 1, so you start with xenzhaobattlecry.png. No biggie.

If she jumps on you and ults w/o prejudice, xenzhaoparry.png, then follow with xenzhaosweep.png and proceed to trash her.

VS

LeBlanc

Medium

Difficulty: 4/10 - 7/10

A real skill matchup. Nothing much to see here, but dodge her leblancsoulshackle.png at all cost, or you will be a sitting duck.

VS

Orianna

Medium

Difficulty: 6/10 - 8/10

Her skill are a perfect balance between offense and defense. If she misses her orianaizunacommand.pngorianadissonancecommand.png combo, engage and make her play. Always remember her orianaredactcommand.png.

Careful when towerdiving, her orianadetonatecommand.png can turn things pretty easily (knockback + short stun).

If the orb suddenly disappeared, an insivible jungler will be coming to gank you.

Noticing this is especially important in team fights, have a pink on you every time.

VS

Swain

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 7/10

The master tactician is a DoT mage - easiest for you to sustain yourself against.
Engage when you feel like it, just be wary of his swainshadowgrasp.png. This can effectively set up successful ganks.

You can break swainbeam.png's tether by walking out of range. swainmetamorphism.png heals way more from champions than from minions/monsters.

VS

Talon

Hard

Difficulty: 6/10 - 9/10

As a bursty and mobile assassin, he is not your best bet. Dodging his talonrake.png is hard, but not impossible, you'll prevent a lot of harrass that way.
Post-6, always have a pink ward on you and place it on the spot whenever he ults!

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

Difficulty: 4/10 - 6/10

If he can't get to place his stun or makes the mistake of using a different card, murder him for his misplay.
You can interrupt his channeled destiny.png with xenzhaocombotarget.png and xenzhaoparry.png.

P.S.: Let you teammates know when he is level 6!

VS

Veigar

Medium

Difficulty: 3/10 - 10/10

It gets more difficult the longer the games goes. If you don't buy 3065.png as last item, his will proceed to 1-shot you with his veigarprimordialburst.png.
Early on, engage a lot in order to prevent him from farming and stacking his veigarbalefulstrike.png. If he places his veigareventhorizon.png, you only get stunned when you touch the border; you can move freely in the circle or 4.png out of it. If you xenzhaosweep.png on him while in the circle, you won't get stunned mid-dash, but at the target location.

VS

Vel'Koz

Medium

Difficulty: 5/10 - 7/10

His kit is very annoying. With every 3rd spell he hits you with, he deals additional true damage. If he misses his velkozE.png, engage, he is rather defenseless.
His velkozR.png slows, but try to dodge sideways.

VS

Viktor

Hard

Difficulty: 7/10 - 10/10

One of the strongest control mages right now. He combines insane (areal) burst with strong CC with a shield w/empowered auto hits and some mobility.
Avoid his viktorgravitonfield.png at all cost and dodge his viktordeathray.png as good as you can.
Try faking all-ins to bait out his viktorgravitonfield.png/viktorchaosstorm.png.

VS

Yasuo

Hard

Difficulty: 6/10 - 9/10

With the new keystone mastery, this guy has almost as much sustain as you, if he has some crit at start. Be very careful, don't get into heavy trade before level 3 and juke his tornado (yasuoQ.png).

VS

Zed

Hard

Difficulty: 7/10 - 10/10

Without a 3157.png as first item, he will proceed to burst you down and get fed.
You can dodge his zedQ.png, but not his zedR.png. If he ults you, try kicking him into your turret (don't push!) and follow with xenzhaosweep.png; he will most probably retreat.

About this guide Back to Top

For quite some time already Xin's W heal AP ratio got nerfed from 0.7 to 0.4, but received a 0.2 AD scaling.
So, a pure AP build isn't as strong as a hybrid build. SInce I don't play AP Xin anymore, I probably won't update this guide anymore. His damage output stayed the same though...
