Summoner Spells Back to Top

Post-rework Xin has more slows than every before, reducing the overall utility of 6.png and making 4.png the best option.

Author note: Filthy casual, peak D4. All my guides are extensively researched and compiled using the most updated champion information, champion/build statistics from various statistic sites, and various NA/KR streams).

New Runes Back to Top

Explanation:

179.png

PRECISION

Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32 is simply better than Lethal%20Tempo.png?width=32. You are looking to burst with Xin, and you are especially looking to slap on a hard-hitting xinzhaow.png finisher after already popping the damage-taken increase passive of Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32Lethal%20Tempo.png?width=32 is only an AS steroid, which his xinzhaoe.png already provide.

Triumph.png?width=32 This rune is gonna get nerfed. 15% is nearly 3 times better than old Dangerous Game, which had always been the bread and butter of junglers due to its ability to turn the tides of close 2v2s or 1v2s. Just be aware the heal travels back to you like an auto, so if you die before it arrives you won't get the healing. Overheal.png?width=32 is decent but not as broken as Triumph.png?width=32

Legend%20Alacrity.png?width=32 Max dps option. Legend%20Bloodline.png?width=32 is not bad but you already have xinzhaopassive.png for on-hit healing.

Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32 If increased ability to execute champions while ganking isn't enough incentive, the adaptive damage after you kill someone works similarly like Triumph.png?width=32 in ensuring you come out ahead in 2v2s.

Domination

Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 You proc this every time you xinzhaoe.png. Xin is yet another abuser of the incredible early powerplays this rune brings.

Relentless%20Hunter.png?width=32 will help you get into fights better and sneak up on hapless laners. It serves a similar function as 3117.png while allowing you to purchase a better defensive option boots. The out-of-combat MS help you get around faster and be able to pressure more lanes as a result, and more importantly, it force the person you are trying to gank to either turn around and AA you (if they are ranged) and risk getting into your xinzhaoe.png range earlier, or having you simply outrun them down with your free3117.png.

179.png

Viable Alternatives

Vision Priority

Zombie%20Ward.png?width=32 is really, really good if you prioritize vision control. If taking this rune, prioritize getting a deep ward in at an enemy buff (the one enemy jungler is likely not starting) before the first camp spawn, so you'll have a zombie ward there to reveal the enemy jungler on his first clear.

Ravenous

Ravenous%20Hunter.png?width=32 is an acceptable replacement for Relentless%20Hunter.png?width=32 if you find yourself craving for a little more in-combat sustain and dueling prowess. Generally speaking however, you already have xinzhaopassive.png to serve that role and thus this is a bit of an overkill, but it's nevertheless a pretty efficient rune.

xinzhaopassive.png Passive - Determination

Free damage and free healing. Scales with level and 10% AD. (It still has a a 40% AP scaling for URF-mode AP xin fans).

NOTE: This work off of basic attacks and also xinzhaow.png strikes, which means you can finish an unsuspecting foe with the final jab on xinzhaow.png combined with this burst.

179.png

xinzhaoq.png Q - Three Talon Strike

Gone were the days where Xin abused 3124.png for huge bursts and knockups on Q. The base AD and bonus AD scaling on this ability isn't where it used to be. It nevertheless remains one of Xin's significant CC when ganking and useful in dueling. This is maxed second for greater output and because of xinzhaoe.png's relative poor scaling.

Note: xinzhaoq.png is an AA reset, use accordingly.
Note: xinzhaoq.png reduce his abilities' cooldown by 1 second each. Thus when dueling, it is worth puttingxinzhaow.png on CD first.

179.png

xinzhaow.png W - Wind Becomes Lightning

This ability is unique to post-rework Xin. It's similar to 107.png's rengarq.png, comprised of an arc then a quick jab. The jab is insanely long given that Xin is a melee champion (900 range), and should thus be used as a finisher on fleeing foes.

Note: The jab slows.
Note: The animation of this start at .6 and caps at .4, scaling with Xin's bonus attack speed.
Note: xinzhaow.png deals reduced damage against minions, but not monsters. This is thus Xin's bread and butter jungle clear move.

179.png

xinzhaoe.png E - Audacious Charge

This is taken first because of the built in AS steroid. Spam this when clearing jungle to refresh Xin's AS steroid.

Xin veterans might remember that Xin used to max E first, that was because the slow component on Xin's E used to scale with the number of levels in the ability. Now, it is a flat .5 second 50% slow. While the AS steroid scales with level, it isn't as significant a gank assist as maxing E used to be, thus, this is maxed last.

179.png

xinzhaor.png R - Crescent Guard

This ability underwent significant rework. For starters, the Challenged enemy no longer lose armor, which is a nerf to Xin's early dueling. The Challenged enemy is simply the only one not knocked back during R.

In addition to the activation sweeping damage, while R is active Xin does not take any damage from a champion 450 units away from him, making him much more lethal at dueling his opponent and giving him temporary tankiness even with a fairly glass canon build.

Note: R negate ALL damage from a champion 450 units away. This include DOTS and delay-activation spells.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

As of V 7.22 UNIQUE – NAIL: Basic attacks against monsters deal 25 bonus on-hit physical damage and grant 15% bonus attack speed for 2 seconds. The AS basically make this mandatory on any auto attack junglers like Kindred. Talisman start is dead boys.

Core Items

Core. You can pick up the long swords on your first back for better snowballing potential, or the Skirmisher for better sustain jungling.
You'll want warrior 90% of the time for a stronger early game. Press the attack is basically a warrior's buffs. Furthermore, the s8 preseason has shorten game length in general so far, making warrior's early power even better.
This is basically dead. Post-rework Xin has much higher bonus AD scaling, and his W is a huge burst, making on-hit damage that much weaker for him.
Get one, not both. When to triforce: you are jungling against a squishy champion and you are pretty ahead. When to black cleaver: multiple sources of AD on your team and/or you are jungling against a tank. Both are completely viable options and the choice comes down to preference somewhat.
Be a good jungler and pick these up, it's worth the gold.
This will be your primary defensive item. Pick it up after your BC or Tri if you are in need of a defensive item. The BF component works great with his bonus AD scaling and the passive allows him to dive into a teamfight and revive even if focused hard.

Situational Items

Tabi vs heavy AA users Merc vs heavy CC
All good defensive options. Pick what you need.

Additional Defensive Options

3140.png can be really, really good if you are carrying. The ability to quickly cleanse a key CC or suppression and gun-down their carries will oft turn the tides of battle in your favor. It is pretty expensive for its stats, so buy it only if you are very ahead.

3812.png Not the best, as even his W benefit from a % of his lifesteal, but situationally good against AD heavy comps.

3075.png Mandatory v. Full AD comps. Make them regret it.

3742.png Nerfed way too many times. Not really worth it. Just get 3143.png if you want armor + HP.

3109.png Xin's not the best champion for it, but picking up one of these when you have a snowballed ADC is never a bad item.

3156.png is situationally good against heavy AP. 3065.png is generally better because of Xin's xinzhaopassive.png.

179.png

Additional Offensive Items

3748.png - Great mix of offensive and defensive stats. If ahead, build this after 3078.png or 3071.png for some defensive stats while maintaining that offensive edge. Xin is a bruiser at heart and can't perform that role while building full squish. This can also optionally be built after a defensive item or two.

3123.png - If your ADC refuse to get this against the likes of soraka it might be up to you to get one in order to successfully assassinate your targets. Not ideal.

3142.png - Lethality isn't the best on Xin but the speed boost can be nice. Not needed with Relentless%20Hunter.png?width=32 for the most part, however.

179.png

Sub-optimal Builds

3124.png - on-hit Xin is dead after Xin rework

3153.png - too expensive for what it does most of the time; exception: when the enemy team is stacking tanks. This will rarely be the case, however.

3022.png - Both E and W have built-in slows. Xin has enough sticking power to go without mallet.

3147.png - Xin has enough build in damage to one shot without going lethality. His survivabilty and gap-closer isn't good enough to stack lethality the same way a 121.png might.

3146.png - Build is dead boys.

3083.png - Xin is not a true tank and has enough built in sustain to not need this.

VS

Amumu

Easy

He's way too slow to keep up with you. Gank early and often. Invade him and eat him alive. As long as you don't let him scale freely to late game this is an easy win.

VS

Brand

Easy

Better jungler wins. But seriously you kind of just eat him alive. Get 3111.png in this matchup, and remember, if after killing him you might die to a lingering brandpassive.png or something just xinzhaor.png from 450 units away.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

He cannot duel you, and you gank harder. Just pressure lanes before he hit 6 and you'll have an easy time. Pick up a 3123.png for his sadism.png if you are dueling him often.

VS

Elise

Easy

Both of you clear fast and can gank early, but your lv3 dueling is significantly better than hers due to your higher sustain with xinzhaopassive.png. When fighting Elise, try to kill her and her spiderlings with xinzhaow.png . Get 3111.png as your second item.

VS

Evelynn

Medium

She can one shot you if you are not careful. Do not use standard wards against Evelyn, instead, drop deep wards on her camps when you invade. Buy 3111.png. With some MR you will win in a straight duel vs her.

VS

Ezreal

Easy

A lot o champions have issue with Ezreal, but not Xin. Avoid getting kited by ezrealmysticshot.png and ezrealarcaneshift.png, and instead, look to flank him from across a wall or a bush. When dueling him, if you can get onto him with xinzhaoe.png and red buff you can chase him down, otherwise it's best to avoid getting kited to bits. You farm a lot faster than Ezreal and can simply choose to farm up and beat him in the mid game.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

Save xinzhaoq.png for drain.png

VS

Gragas

Medium

He's a better teamfighting tank, you are a better duelist. Your clear is a bit faster/better, and both of you gank pretty well. However, you duel a lot better than him.

VS

Graves

Medium
gravessmokegrenade.png will cuck you really really hard. Late game graves will destroy you with 3047.png + gravesmove.png. Don't let him get there by pressuring him and lanes early on. Avoid gravesqlinespell.png ricochet in tight corridors.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

The two of you serve similar functions, except you gank better and duel better.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

You will outduel a J4 with 3047.png, however, watch his burst with jarvanivdemacianstandard.pngjarvanivdragonstrike.png and Electrocute.png?width=32. It wouldn't be enough to kill you unless you are chunked, but in a 2v2 if you get hit by his combo you are probably dead. You clear faster, so look to fight him early.

VS

Jax

Easy

Jax is really easy so long as you watch for one thing. His jaxcounterstrike.png WILL block your xinzhaoq.png knockup. However, you are the better duelist and can simply hold xinzhaoq.png until he jaxcounterstrike.png and kite him during the jaxcounterstrike.png. He doesn't have enough to kill you during the stun and you should be able to sustain his damage with 3047.png. Be aware that Jax powerpike really hard at lv6. This matchup really comes down to the fact that you farm a lot faster and gank a lot better early. Look to duel him before 6 or outfarm him and you should win hands down.

VS

Kayn

Hard

Red Kayn is annoying AF. Probably one of the only champions that outsustain you in a duel. Beat him early or you might get cucked. Be aware of his unconventional gank pathes with kayne.png and ward for your lanes.

VS

Kha'Zix

Easy

Kha'zix likes to build lethality. 3047.png cucks him really hard early. You outduel him.

VS

Kindred

Easy

You do too much burst damage for this mobile champion to kite. Slow her with your xinzhaoe.png and red buff and xinzhaow.png and cut her down.

VS

Lee Sin

Easy

Xin is one of the best picks into Lee due to your insanely healthy clear and powerful early ganks. You can match his early pressure and also outscale. Just make sure you control him early and don't let him snowball.

VS

Master Yi

Easy

Yi is a joke to you. You farm faster and gank better. Take advantage of the fact that he cannot gank well until an item or two in and look to pressure lanes. When itemizing against Yi, look to build a healthy mix of damage and HP instead of armor. Your priority isn't trying to survive him while he auto you down and rather to kill him before he lands his barrage of autos.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

Nida has been nerfed really, really hard. Match her pressure early, which should be easy as you have a very healthy lv3 clear. You outscale.

VS

Nunu

Medium

He's really annoying and can kite the hell out of you with iceblast.png. In this matchup, don't spend all of your energy trying to not get counterjungled, instead, look to pressure lanes and snowball that way.

VS

Olaf

Easy

This champ has also been nerfed to bits. Just fight him.

VS

Rammus

Hard

This champion is a cuck, ban it. But seriously when fighting Rammus, your xinzhaopassive.png is a huge asset up until he get 3075.png. Don't focus on dueling him after the first few levels as he can just run away. Build 3071.png and kill him with your teammates.

Also, take advantage of the fact that you farm a lot faster.

VS

Rek'Sai

Medium

Tanky Reksai is a great duelist. Not as good as you with a few items in, but he can kill you early on in 2v2s and match your early pressure. Watch for his reksaie.png burst at 100 fury.

VS

Rengar

Easy

You outduel and outgank him. Don't let him farm for free and you'll win.

VS

Sejuani

Medium

Really annoying teamfighting tank whose cannister of slows and stuns can cuck you hard. In this matchup it's imperative you look to out-farm/out-gank her early. If you guys get to teamfight stage equally strong she'll outscale you.

VS

Shaco

Easy

Xin is the OG shaco counter and still is. Your clear is incredibly, incredibly fast and healthy, making it virtually impossible for Shaco to cheese you. Be aware of Shacos taking 14.png and consider varying up your early clear route to be unpredictable. (e.g., start on the opposite side of your bottom lane and get your top laner to leash you). You outduel Shaco by a significant margin. If he successfully escape with deceive.png don't commit too much effort trying to kill him, instead, go counterjungle him and outscale.

VS

Shyvana

Hard

Do not try to outfarm Shyvana, you'll fall hopelessly behind. Take advantage of her weak early game and either cuck her lv3 or pressure her lanes hard.

Tips & Tricks Back to Top

TL;DR

xinzhaoe.png -> xinzhaoq.png -> xinzhaow.png 90% of the time.

Note: while xinzhaow.png is casting the duration of other abilities is temporarily frozen, so you don't have to worry about the E AS or the xinzhaoq.png effect expiring during it.

Note: Casting xinzhaow.png after xinzhaoe.png will snapshot the AS steroid on E, reducing the cast animation W.

179.png

Ganking 101 - When to xinzhaoe.png?

You'll generally want to xinzhaoe.png off the bat for the powerful slow, then turn on your xinzhaoq.png and look to CC them down. One exception to this rule is when ganking a melee top laner from tri-bush; so long as your laner is already close enough to them, you can hold E and simply walk at them and force them to choose being engaged on you or trying to flash, you can then follow their flash with E. Note: this is not true, however, if they are so tanky as to be able to survive without you E'ing them and AA'ing them down earlier.

179.png

Proper use of xinzhaow.png

When dueling, xinzhaow.png early and often once you have a few points into it for maximum damage. xinzhaoq.png is sometimes needed instead for its knockup component, particularly when engaging foes that's likely to flee after you xinzhaoe.png onto them. In those situations, look to kill fleeing foes with a xinzhaow.png in the back.

When jungling, look to line up monsters (particularly the raptor camp), before xinzhaow.png for increased efficiency.
179.png

xinzhaoq.png Q-Tip

The third hit on Three Talon strike will knockup regardless of what you AA'ed with the first two. Thus, a small trick to catch an unsuspecting carry off-guard would to be Q another champion twice, xinzhaoe.png then xinzhaoq.png, locking them in place long enough for your team to burst them without them immediately 4.png away.

179.png

xinzhaor.png Your most important team-fighting skill

R gives Xin something he desperately needed - the ability to jump on someone OTHER than the ADC in a fight. That's not to say you shouldn't jump on a vulnerable ADC if you can, that's still ideal, but it can often be hard getting onto them behind the layers of protection they have. Instead, you now have the option of engaging on someone else (try to pick something other than the frontline tank, however), and keeping the ADC at bay with your R. Their damage dealers then have to face the choice of entering 450 units of you or not damaging you. If they choose the former, your xinzhaoe.png is conveniently 650 units and can basically gurantee you can hit them instead.

Alternatively, if you already got on an important carry (note, having auto'ed them once or E'ed them), use xinzhaor.png to throw away the pesky supports and tanks converging on you to peel their carry. Note: R doesn't keep them away from entering your range, but you can knock them back with its initial cast.

Note: while you will occasionally use R for damage, most of the time you should look to just AA someone down and use R to either disengage additional foes or for the 450 unit "shield".

Early Jungling Back to Top

Standard

Red -> Wolves -> Blue

Blue -> Wolves -> Red

Aggressive

Red -> Blue -> Red

Blue -> Red -> Blue

Note: only attempt this against enemy junglers that has a slow clear and is weak early on, like 33.png57.png etc. It's also particularly effective against junglers that you know will get chunked, like 102.png2.png36.png

Important

STAY ON THE MAP at level 3 with double buff. Xin sustains extremely well and should definitely look to abuse his lv3 power spike with either ganks, counterjungling, or dueling the enemy jungler. Do not waste this window by recalling until you accomplish one of the above.

Mid Game Back to Top

Defined roughly as when laning is generally over, and people have on average 1-3 items.

Look to pick on laners that are out of position. With 3715.png you can outduel most champions after your 3071.png or 3078.png powerspike. Keep your farm up and secure neutral objectives with your team. It is very important for you to snowball yourself and your team in the mid game.

Note: don't challenge the likes of 114.png or 122.png unless you are very, very ahead. You are better off bullying vulnerable ADCS. 222.png is free food. Go ham.

Note: bushes are your friend. If you can get onto a ranged champion without being chunked early, they have almost no way to get away with you with the vast amount of slows in your arsenal.

Late Game Back to Top

Baron 101

GET SOMEONE ELSE TO TANK BARON UNLESS YOU HAVE ZERO TANKS IN YOUR TEAM.

Baron's Gaze BARON'S GAZE: Baron Nashor takes 50% reduced damage from the champion that he has most recently auto-attacked for 15 seconds.

THIS IS NOT YOUR FRIEND.

179.png

Compared to pre-rework, Xin's late game is notably better because of his xinzhaor.png and his impressive output, but late game is still not his strong point due to the inherent vulnerabilities of a melee dps. You should look to pick champions that are out of position, and in a teamfight, ideally someone other than you will initiate, allowing you to get on their carries more easily. DO NOT FULL RAMBO INTO THEIR TEAM WITH xinzhaor.png. It's not a Kayle ulti and you will get cucked. CC is not your friend.

Also remember that xinzhaopassive.png healing is very, very significant. You will inevitably take damage, but try to not get one shot so you can sustain throughout the fight and keep outputting damage. If you can trade yourself for a big-ticket carry it's generally worth, but other than that, look to skirmish rather than kamakazi'ing and die.
