Summoner Spells Back to Top

IF YOU WANT A DEEPER INSIGHT ON HOW THESE SUMMONERS WILL WORK WITH YASUO, READ THE ABILITIES SECTION FIRST!!!!!!!!!!

157.pngYasuo prides himself on high mobility within dangerous situations in creep waves. For this reason, closing the gap towards a creep or through a creep towards a champion requires the use of 4.pngFlash in many situations. It's also generally for escaping, juking, or chasing.

157.pngYasuo can run 12.pngTeleport or 14.pngIgnite for mid and top, depending on the farming situation and kill necessity. 1.pngCleanse can be used to secure your ultimate in case you're caught by a 69.pngCassiopeia ultimate or a 134.pngSyndra stun. 3.pngExhaust naturally synergizes with him because of his need to stick to his opponent to do consistent DPS with his low-cooldown abilities and on-hit effects. 3.pngExhaust therefore is very good, because it slows the opponent down, shreds armor and magic resist, and reduces damage output.

NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CLEANSE WILL NOT WORK ON DISPLACEMENT EFFECTS THAT DON'T APPLY A DEBUFF! THIS INCLUDES KNOCKUPS LIKE 64.pngLEE SIN'S ULTIMATE, OR 31.pngCHO'GATH'S Q! Neither will it interrupt the few suppressions in the game. Why? Summoners can't be activated when suppressed. RIP 90.pngMalzahar matchups.

Masteries Back to Top

157.pngYasuo is almost like an AD Carry in that his auto attacks work beautifully in conjunction with his spells. This is the reason why he is considered an AD Caster. You want attack speed and a lot of damage early. Then, you want to build as much early-game damage as possible since the current meta is revolved around snowballing lanes. You can go down the Cunning tree, getting Thunderlord's Decree, then chooses between Ferocity or Resolve. You choose either one. Thunderlord's Decree is best for lane trading and snowballing. The reason why you pick this mastery up over Warlord's Bloodlust is because Warlord's Bloodlust no longer procs on minions.

You could also run Grasp of the Undying! It's not too bad, and it mitigates just a little of Yasuo's early-game troubles, and strengthens his level 2. Since you basically get the Grasp proc by farming minions for a while, then E-ing in, Q-ing mid-E to get the proc on the enemy champ, then E-ing back out (this is basically the same as Fiora Q-Vital trades with the exception of true damage) you get a heal while remaining relatively safe due to your shield's sort of high value in the early stage of the game. Because your E naturally dodges skillshots and point-and-clicks don't do too much damage in early levels (I'm looking at YOU, 7.pngLeBlanc's Q) you win the trade and come out with extra health, and can afford to be SLIGHTLY (remember, you're still very very very vulnerable to ganks early on) more reckless with trading until you have these three conditions back:
1) Your shield is restored.
2) Grasp of the Undying has refreshed its cooldown.
3) In terms of abilities, you have the absolute advantage over your opponent.

What does 3 mean?

Consider the situation where I'm laning against 7.pngLeBlanc. At level 2, if she tries to trade with me, I can trade back because her main trade is auto-Q-W, which I can heal back up off of with Grasp of the Undying plus my passive shield (and maybe a 1054.pngDoran's Shield) plus my lifesteal from being in the Ferocity tree and having Vampirism. At this point, until her W no longer has a cooldown, I have the absolute advantage. My damage is stronger than hers now, her only escape at that point is gone, and my mobility is much greater than hers is (as long as I still have minions to use my E on)

Fast forward a few minutes in lane. She is level 6, and I am also level 6. She does her usual Q-R-W (or some instance of that combo) on me, and chunks me for X amount of damage (depends on if I windwall early, late, or at the correct time). At this point, until her W OR R no longer has a cooldown OR both, I have the absolute advantage. Her chains matter little because it probably isn't being maxed (so the only real threat is the slow into CC) and it's hard to hit a skillshot when you're hasagi-ing all over the lane with your E. You can windwall the W easily as a lot of LeBlancs like to throw it out when you become a threat and their vision of you is not blocked by anything (minion, wind wall, etc) so you can reflexively press W. Therefore, you do more damage, have more mobility, and she has no escape.

This strategy is a LOT harder to implement if you have only damage, because if you screw up and don't get your three hits somehow (Thunderlords) or you don't crit (Warlords) or you don't stay in battle for long enough (Fervor) you will not do the optimal trade. Grasp is a guaranteed proc, since it synergizes SO WELL with your E and Q (in order).

I still recommend Thunderlords. Why? Because they buffed everything else and didn't so much as lay a finger on Thunderlords' ratios. Gee Gee, Rito Gaemz.

NOTE: IF THE JUNGLER HAS RANGED ABILITIES OR IF YOUR LANER HAS EXCEEDINGLY ANNOYING RANGED POKE, GET WIND WALL LEVEL 3.
COME BACK TO THIS SECTION AFTER READING AHEAD ON WHAT EACH ABILITY DOES IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW 157.pngYASUO WORKS.

157.pngYasuo has a decently strong early at levels 2 and 3. His efficiency in lane is totally dependent on two things that can go either way; farming or killing until he hits his itemized power spike.

Some FAQs when I tell people how to max 157.pngYasuo:
"But Ryuu, you got E before Q! How does that help you?"

So, remember how you have this amazing shield that will soak at least one skill from the enemy at level 1?
Remember how you've got a stacking magic damage bonus on your E?
Remember how you started those crit chance runes?
Remember how many laners are immobile at level 1?
This is why you get E first. You can spend two Es going through the creep wave, then use the third stack on the enemy. Auto attack once or twice until your shield expires or is about to expire, then E away. Free trade and you didn't even do much.

"Ryuu, you maxed E! What the hell, dude? Q at rank 5 does more than four times the damage it does at rank 1!"

157.pngYasuo's early game is based all around moving around the enemy's skills and harmful burst in order to get close and hit until freelo. This is why you max E. It lowers cooldown on those you've already used your dash on, which will allow for a much more mobile laning experience. This WILL help in lanes such as when you're against 238.pngZed134.pngSyndra99.pngLux, etc.

"But Ryuu, more damage = more kill potential!"

But dear reader, more dodging damage = more won trades! Don't get greedy for kills.
...
...
...
except if the laner you're fighting against can move just as quickly as you can, or is slow, immobile, and you can block most of their damage. Then you max Q, since E is rather unnecessary.
================================================================================================================================================================================================================

157.pngYasuo's Passive:
Way of the WandererWay of the WandererWay of the Wanderer

Intent: Yasuo's critical strike chance is doubled, but at the cost of a 10% reduced critical strike damage.

Resolve: Yasuo passively gains a value called Flow. This value, when maxed, will supply Yasuo with a shield on hit that scales with level.

THIS PASSIVE
LMAO
THIS PASSIVE IS SO OVERLOADED
AS A 157.pngYASUO MAIN I AM DISGUSTED ON HOW MUCH MORE OP THIS IS IF A BETTER 157.pngYASUO PLAYER UTILIZES IT FULLY

Let's go on a train ride.
RESOLVE:
157.pngYasuo  gains Flow as his secondary meter. This Flow increases with respect to his movement. For every x units he moves (in distance! this is not displacement) he will gain y amount of Flow. This corresponds per level. The more levels you have, the less Flow you will need to be able to proc your shield. This is SO STUPID because it allows for incredibly safe trading at levels 2, 3 and 4. It allows for the gaining of what would be unsafe CS. It allows for being braindead in lane for a few seconds. oh god why did rito do this

INTENT:
157.pngYasuo gains TWICE the amount of bonus critical chance that he gets from everything that will give him critical chance. The penalty is that he will lose 10% of the critical strike damage on every crit. But why does this not matter?
BECAUSE HE CRITS LIKE 100% OF THE TIME AT 35 MINUTES LMFAO

3087.pngStatikk Shiv and 3078.pngTrinity Force or 3031.pngInfinity Edge!
30% and 50%. ONE. HUNDRED. PERCENT.
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS?

SPEED MATH:
Critical Strike Damage = Current AD x 2
Critical Strike Damage for 157.pngYasuo = Current AD x 2 - 10% Critical Strike Damage
Critical Strike Damage for 157.pngYasuo with Infinity Edge = (Current AD x 2.5) - 10% Critical Strike Damage
Critical Strike Damage for 157.pngYasuo with Infinity Edge = 2.25 x Current AD
WHAT
THE
HELL
DUDE?

Start with 87 AD from runes, masteries and a Doran's Blade. Crit someone. You will do a raw amount of damage that is similar to 156 damage. RITO WHY?
Late game, he will crit 100% of the time. This means all of his critical strike moves (which is basically his low cooldown Q and his auto attacks that are easy to get in range of in lane) will do 2.25x his current AD. IE gives 65 AD. Trinity gives 25 AD. Your eventual AD item will give a lot of AD. That isn't fair.

*****NOTE. 157.pngYasuo's Q ability has a 25% reduced Critical Strike damage debuff on it, as opposed to the 10% noted by the passive. If you're going to do early-game damage calculations, keep that in mind.*****

Now if only Rito gave 157.pngYasuo an AOE ability to be like a close-ranged Jinx...
...
...
did they?
======================================================================================================================================================================================

157.pngYasuo's Q:
Steel TempestSteel TempestSteel Tempest

Active: Yasuo thrusts his sword forward, stabbing all enemies in a straight line. It scales off of his base AD and Bonus AD while applying a base damage that scales with ability rank. Each time Yasuo hits an enemy with this ability, he gains a stack of Gathering Storm. At two stacks, his Steel Tempest becomes empowered, allowing him to shoot a tornado in a longer line that travels and knocks up all enemies in his path.

If used in conjunction with his Sweeping Blade, Yasuo will spin in a circle, doing damage to all enemies around him instead.

This ability is treated as a basic attack; the cooldown scales on Attack Speed, the move applies on-hit effects and the attacks can critically strike. The on-hit effects only apply the enemy that Yasuo first hits.

Riot hasn't put in the tooltip for Steel Tempest that the bonus AD damage from this skill loses, instead of 10% critical strike damage, 25% critical strike damage.

I spoke a little too soon...
Take into account 157.pngYasuo's passive while reading the fact that using your E in tandem with your Q will give you an AOE move that will CRIT. fml

This is 157.pngYasuo's main farming move in lane. It has quite a large range, and will allow you to last hit minions while keeping a relatively safe distance. It will apply on hit effects like Red Buff's effect and, most importantly, 3087.pngStatikk Shiv's effect.

It is super important that you recognize how to weave your Q into your autoattack patterns. If you do it inefficiently, you'll output less damage and utility than you do just by blindly right clicking your enemy. As 157.pngYasuo has a reduced 25% critical strike damage natural debuff on his Q, you would actually do more damage without using it in the late game, but not using it won't give you the utility to win fights. Learn how to do this, and you'll become a monster.

157.pngYasuo's Q will scale cooldown reduction the higher Attack Speed you have. This is also why you first-buy 3087.pngStatikk Shiv. It gives crit chance and attack speed. You can notice the cooldown reduction on your Q immediately.

157.pngYasuo gains stacks of Gathering Storm as his Steel Tempest hits enemies. On the second proc, his Q will load what I call the Empowered Steel Tempest. This will give you a knock up. It is 157.pngYasuo's only hard form of crowd control.

It is Very. Very. Very. VERY. important that you manage the use of Gathering Storm correctly. Using this properly, you can stop 12.pngTeleport, annoying crowd-control like 3.pngGalio's ultimate, and people in general so you can get close to them and use your E to stick to them. You can also just, well... knock them up for your ultimate.

Now, see, we've gone over the fact that 157.pngYasuo is able to stick to enemies and dish out great DPS with his Q.
But how can you stick to enemies like, say, 25.pngMorgana, if she throws her Q on you?
================================================================================================================================================================================================================

157.pngYasuo's W:
Wind WallWind WallWind Wall

Yasuo instantly throws out a wall of sheer wind that blows forwards slowly for 3.75 seconds. The wall becomes wider the more it is ranked. All projectiles which come into contact with the wall are dissipated immediately, with the exception of all turret shots.
This wall works on Baron Nashor, Dragon, Gromp, Raptors and little Red and Blue buffs.

Murder me.
This skill is what separates good 157.pngYasuos and great 157.pngYasuos.

This. "Wind Wall". Will stop things. That are flying at you.
Everything.

Here are champions that have cried because of 157.pngYasuo:
51.pngCaitlyn
81.pngEzreal
22.pngAshe
15.pngSivir

I can list more, but it's not necessary. Can you guess why?
It's because the re-occurring theme is that they are ADCs. This is why 157.pngYasuo is EXTREMELY scary to lone ADCs (except maybe 67.pngVayne). Their autos do nothing, you laugh while you Q them to death.
The wall comes out about half a second after you press W. That does not mean it starts working half a second after you press W. It works instantly. Instantly. Let me give you some dialogue in the all-chat of a previous game:

XXXXX(Ezreal): rip yasuo
*ult*
*waiting*
XXXXX(Ezreal): wtf
SKT T1 Ryuu(Yasuo): Kappa

So you know how other champions might need to 4.pngFlash in order to dodge an ult like that with no ward-jumping available or all moves on cooldown? Nah. 157.pngYasuo just presses W. None of that is necessary. lawl

Great! We went over a few things in the last few moves. Damage and utility. But how does 157.pngYasuo stick to  his enemies?
================================================================================================================================================================================================================

157.pngYasuo's E:
Sweeping BladeSweeping BladeSweeping Blade

Yasuo dashes to a nearby enemy champion, minion or neutral monster and does magic damage as he passes by. This move will gain 25% added damage if he uses it on an enemy, which stacks twice. Once Yasuo dashes to a unit, it is marked by the ability. Marked units cannot be dashed to again for a set amount of time, which scales the more the skill is ranked.

I hate you, Riot.

You created a champion with [Phreak] tons of damage that has five kabillion dashes. Why.

This is why I max E first. When you level your E, you lose seconds on how long a marked target needs to wait to be able to E again. You also gain tons of magic damage on your E. If you stack it twice, then E onto your laner, you will do a chunk of magic damage. Combined with your Q AOE, you will do more damage. Auto attack later, you will do MORE damage. Then you dash away. You will wind wall as you go back so they can't retaliate with projectile moves. You have probably won the trade.

You can now do it again six seconds later. But this time, you have your Flow shield, so even without the Wind Wall, you are able to soak some damage, and possibly kill your laner.

Okay! So, we finally get to why 157.pngYasuo is a gigantic piece of 17.png
================================================================================================================================================================================================================

157.pngYasuo's R:
Last BreathLast BreathLast Breath

Yasuo instantly blinks to all enemies who are knocked up within 1300 units of his position, suspending them in midair for a brief period of time while cutting into them. He slams them into the ground, dealing a set amount of damage while gaining a buff that ignores 50% bonus armor. When used, Yasuo not only loses all of his current Gathering Storm stacks, but also refills his Flow gauge.

I don't need to say anything important about this move except ONE THING. THIS DETAIL IS WHAT PEOPLE MAY UNINTENTIONALLY LIE TO YOU ABOUT. REMEMBER. IT'S UNINTENTIONAL. IT'S A GIGANTIC MISUNDERSTANDING.

The 50% Bonus Armor Penetration

This. Is. SO. Misleading.

You think that if you ult someone at level 6, you immediately remove half of the enemy's armor when you attack them for that attack. That's WRAWNG. YOU SUCK. STOP LYING.

If your laner has no armor, this ult will not assist you with the armor penetration. It will only take 50% of BONUS ARMOR. Okay? BONUS ARMOR. Let me help you understand:

157.pngYasuo vs a 500 armor level 18 44.pngTaric:
157.pngYasuo uses his ultimate. 44.pngTaric becomes his next target after he ults.
157.pngYasuo proceeds to beat him up. If 157.pngYasuo has 3035.pngLast Whisper, he will first shred 50% of 44.pngTaric's bonus armor. Since 44.pngTaric has 89 armor at level 18, then 157.pngYasuo will shred off (500 - 89) x 0.5 armor, which is 205.5 armor. Therefore, the resulting armor is now 294.5. Then, 3035.pngLast Whisper will kick in, and take (for argument's sake alone, 35% [I know that this isn't how  3035.pngLast Whisper works anymore])  of 294.5 and subtract that, which will result in 157.pngYasuo doing damage equivalent to if his enemy had 191.425 armor, which is a HUGE damage improvement to 500 armor.

================================================================================================================================================================================================================

There. I helped. That's how it works. A lot of people don't know how to explain this properly.

I'm done.
That's it.
Thanks for reading this impossibly long essay.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Start this if you know you'll have an easy lane. This includes lanes which are heavily skillshot reliant in earlier levels.
If you're understanding that your lane will be full of dangerous harass, get this.
Get this if you want the early damage buff with lane sustain. Your Q does proc lifesteal.
only if you are in a lane where you're maxing q and need damage with the exception of a mirror lane
In a skillshot heavy lane, you'll want to consider this to boost your E speed.
Passive lane? Commit to farming. Outfarm your laner, back, teleport in with shiv, destroy.

Core Items

Yasuo is HEAVILY item dependent. First item Statikk Shiv synergizes with EVERY PART OF YASUO. THIS HAS TO BE STRESSED. Trinity is becoming a more meta pick now, and Infinity Edge will make up for your 20% critical damage reduction (10% of 200% is 20%), and instead will make it a 25% damage reduction from 250%. Tabi or Merc Treads depend on the threat of the enemy team. NOTE! Do NOT get Trinity AND IE anymore. You are effectively going over the 100% critical chance cap, and it no longer becomes necessary to get both. You have the new items to do your bidding.

Situational Items

BUILD IN RESPONSE TO THE ENEMY'S BUILD PATHS. IF YOU FIND YOURSELF DYING AFTER ULT, GET GUARDIAN ANGEL.
SITUATIONAL PT.2 Don't get Trinity Force if you're getting Cleaver, and don't get Cleaver if you're getting Trinity Force. There really isn't a reason to get Cleaver unless they have a lot of tanks. The armor shred will help you.
    LOL
This is Statikk Shiv's and Phantom Dancer's baby. It's practically a single target Shiv. If you're eating the living hell out of your lane... get this.
This item is very good with Yasuo, especially now that the new version of Death's Dance is more gold efficient. The bleed that you get is a plus, because your shield works off any damage. You can soak a hit that would normally kill you, dash like mad to build your shield meter until full, and then the bleed will proc your shield. This has saved my hide before.
The game says this is a recommended item. I strongly disagree. No more crit chance = not a core item (if at ALL) anymore.
(UPDATED BECAUSE IM DUMB) Grievous wounds only works self-healing, so this is priority if they have Mundo or someone with insane self heal like Aatrox, AP Xin Zhao and AP Warwick.
If they have a lot of armor and tank stats, you should consider this over Mortal Reminder. The percent health damage aside the buffed Last Whisper aside your self-buff from your ultimate will render the tanks effectively useless against you.
I have seen a Yasuo get this. In prolonged fights, he gets massive heals while doing unnecessarily large damage with his stacked E and doing the AOE magic damage with Q. I feel like this item is extremely situational, but goes to show that mixed damage with crit and even more heals is a good way to sustain in fights. At the moment, Guinsoo's is very strong, and I suppose it could be a good pick up.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

It's important you don't let him get ahead on you. This is one of those lanes where I believe you should build AD to start, because crits won't matter as much. You need to start crit runes, burst him down to pop his passive with your Q and auto attacks while dodging his curved slow and his jump. If he ults, disengage if you can, but if you know you can't, don't waste time running and taking damage. Wind wall his slow and engage. Weave between bushes to stop his autos, because he has no ranged spellcast moves that are as low CD as your Q.

Max Q.

VS

Ahri

Medium

You'd think this would be easy? You're wrong. Ahri's skillshots are lower in cooldown than your W. If she lands ONE charm on you, you're going to get chunked. Use your E a lot to dodge her skillshots. Sometimes, after using your E, just stand still. If she tries to predict your movements, she'll mess up.

It is very important that you dodge her E or wall her E. Her Q doesn't matter as much unless she hits you with the shot and the return of it. Her W can counter-harass you if you go in on her, and she can E you if you E her, since you can't W in the middle of your E.

Max E. You'll be dodging things heavily.

VS

Akali

Hard

**PRE-6**

You can easily harass Akali, but she can easily harass you back when you go in on her. Both of you require to stick to each other to do damage at this point. But...
**POST-6**
She can stick to you way easier than you can stick to her. Your only chance of pooping all over her is to buy a Pink Ward/Oracle's Lens, put it down after you ult her if you do, and hit your everything before she hits her everything. If you W her Q, you will win. I believe in you.
Land your third Q as she dashes to you, you will interrupt it, ult her. She dies as long as you have vision in her W if she puts it down. But, her Q will regularly pop your passive in lane, so you can't use it to win trades as easily. This is a main reason why this lane sucks for you.

If your jungler has a knockup, you can easily gank this. Just make sure only one of you put down what you need to reveal Akali, since wasting a pink ward is bad.

In this lane, max Q.

VS

Anivia

Medium

She will destroy your face if you don't windwall her icicle. Try to do that. Use your E to dodge her stun if you can. This does NOT mean "let's E through minion but right into her stun". Try to be methodical about how you dash. This is the one lane where I don't agree that you should trade every second, especially at level 6.

Max Q.

VS

Annie

Hard

Ew...

Harass her until level 6. What you want to do is windwall her Q when she goes to take a CS with it. This will put the CD at 4 seconds-ish. If she doesn't have her stun at that point, all in. If she has more than three stacks, don't go in. Three, because she can E and then W you for the stun.

Level 6 and onwards makes your lane a living hell.

Max E.

VS

Azir

Medium

Actually, this lane can be somewhat skill-based.

You can windwall his soldiers while they're mid-flight. Granted, they won't disappear, but you can.

So, what you want to do is windwall his soldiers while you're next to your creep wave, then use his creep wave to dash towards him in an L-shaped fashion of some kind, and then smack him as many times as you can without taking too much harass. Usually I'll go in, E twice to get the 50% bonus damage to damage him at maximum, Q after E, auto attack, then E away or walk away. His soldiers won't be able to do much.

VS

Brand

Hard

ugh

he pops your shield with conflagration
he stuns you with his sear
he boops you with his pillar
he reks your running samurai self with his ult.

all you can really do is windwall his ult and his sear and dodge his aoe with your e. if he sets you on fire with his own e then happens to stun you, say goodbye.

you do outspeed him, though. use that to your advantage.

Put three points in E, then finish maxing your Q.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

This can actually be really good or really bad for you.

If Cass sucks at landing her poison, you win. Max Q in that case. Be safe, though. Never use Windwall for any other reason unless it dictates life or death.

If Cass can really land her poison, call for ganks, max E, and play passively.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

who is this void man?

Either you will eat him alive, or he will literally eat you alive.

If he lands silence, good luck. If he doesn't, all in. You dodge his Q by using your E. Just be careful of his Vorpal Spikes. They might accidentally set off your shield.

Max Q.

VS

Darius

Hard

in ionia, they never invented basketball. so it's actually really hard to fight against the dunkmaster

this is a stupid matchup for you. for some reason, Fnatic's own Huni picked Yasuo into Darius. Darius got a penta that game.

Max your Q, because once you get stuck in Darius' vortex, you won't get out.

VS

Diana

Medium

I'm saying medium because this matchup is easy to snowball but hard if she's not that behind and hits level 6.

You want to consistently make her waste mana. You do this by using your E towards her, then E backwards. She wastes mana on her W. She has mana problems. Soon, she'll have none, and you can all in.

Put three points in E, then max Q.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

He's easy if he misses cleavers. He's bad for you if he lands them. DO NOT ULT HIM WHEN HE ULTS UNLESS YOU HAVENT PUSHED LANE AND YOU HAVE A BORK OR A JUNGLER. PLEASE. YOU WASTE IT.

Max E.

VS

Ezreal

Easy
WHAT'S DIFFICULTY
HE'S SO EASY
WHATS A SKILLSHOT? LMFAO

MAX W JUST TO BAIT HIM INTO THINKING YOU'RE BAD, THEN GET ITEMS AND DESTROY HIM

or if you're boring, max e.

VS

Fiora

Hard

So the new Fiora gives tons of issues. If she Ws your third Q and hits you, you lose. If she Ws your E Q, you lose. If she Qs you in all your Vitals at all times, you lose. If she gets in your face, you practically lost. She's a tough cookie to fight, but definitely not outplayable. Vitals are lost when you enter a bush. Try to abuse that.

Max Q.

VS

Fizz

Medium

Skill matchup.

If he flips, E away from it. If he Qs, E away from it. If he ults, Wind wall it and walk backwards or all in by curving around the fish with your E. All in if he alls in but misses his shark.

His passive acts as a 1054.pngDoran's Shield against you, though. Just remember that.

Max Q.

VS

Garen

Hard

Oh jeez.

His silence will murder your face if you get hit by it, then his E will do tons of damage especially if you're the villain. You can outplay him easily by making him Q, then having him waste it by chasing you. Then, you turn with your E, punch him several times with your sword, and back off. Don't let him have the luxury of using his regen by freezing lane. Miss CS if you have to. Just freeze it. The reason why he's hard is that if you don't land your ultimate on him when he starts building like a tank, you're going to die if you're in an extended fight.

Three points in E, then max Q.

VS

Gnar

Easy

You outdamage him in his mini form if you dodge his boomerang.

Wait for him to hit half Rage. All in if he uses his boomerang. If you chase and he hits 100 Rage, expect him to turn. If he does, use your E on the minions that you hopefully left behind you while chasing to escape him. He's wasted his Mega Gnar. Repeat until win.

Max E.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

You outdamage him.

Max Q.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

You can windwall his turrets while trying to take them down. You can windwall his mega rockets. This lane is entirely dependent on your ability to wind wall.

Max E.

VS

Irelia

Hard

This lane is SUPER DIFFICULT. Ask for jungle ganks. Irelia will stick to you harder than you stick to Cho'Gath.

Doesn't matter what you max, really. Max E, though. Voyboy did it.

VS

Jax

Hard

His counter strike naturally counters you. His leap can be E'd through midflight. His auto-attack reliance makes your W useless. He can stick to you really hard while doing tons of damage.

Max Q.

VS

Jayce

Medium

This lane can either give you trouble or give you hell. You can wall his snipes, but his close range is stronger than yours if you don't kite correctly.

Max E.

VS

Karthus

Easy

What's a Karthus?

Max E.

VS

Katarina

Easy

You can windwall her ult. How cool is that?

Max Q.

VS

Kennen

Hard

So the problem with Kennen is that his 6 will buttrape you and his stun will also do the same. You can wall his shuriken only, and he will chase you really hard with his, well, chase.

Max Q.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

UGH

You can negate a TON of her burst with Wind Wall. But a good LeBlanc knows how to bait you by throwing an E or something at you so you use it, then W over the wall, Q R and back up.

You're going to have a lot of pain, friend.

Max whatever you want except for W.

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

There are two main problems that Yasuo has to deal with. One is a slow. The other is any displacement ability that lasts a while and that an enemy can follow up on, such as Charm. Lee Sin, unfortunately, has both of these.

Lee Sin is difficult to fight, because he can disengage a trade as well as he can engage a trade. He can pop your shield early with his AOE or his poke, then go in when you don't have it. His early damage is ridiculous, as his Q is an execute and scales off of your missing health, which is a disgusting issue. You will outscale him if he doesn't go full AD. If he goes full AD, well... um... please don't get kicked into the star combo.

Max Q.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

If you approach her post-6, you will die because she will instantly ult you and murder your face after it stops.

You have the biggest advantage pre-6. Use it.

Max E.

VS

Lux

Easy

LOL THIS IS EASY

WINDWALL HER Q AND SHE HAS NOWHERE LEFT TO RUN!

E AWAY FROM HER E

Just, you can't windwall her ult, ok?

Max E.

VS

Malphite

Medium

This can actually be a little challenging.

If you don't have your shield up, windwall his ground projectile. All in right afterwards. This is one of those matchups where I actually think it's good to buy an early Vampiric Scepter to get the lifesteal, then continue on with buying your core items.

Max Q.

VS

Malzahar

Medium

Pre-6, you dominate.

Post-6, you die.

That's all there is to it. Snowball as hard as you can before he hits Catalyst of the Protector or Rod of Ages. If he gets even one kill on you, consider an early QSS or Hexdrinker.

Max Q.

VS

Maokai

Medium

Mao has a lot of sticking potential with his travel and his ultimate. His poke is very fast and very strong. Try not to die too easily, but you can counter all-in him.

Three points in E, then max Q.

VS

Morgana

Medium

Windwall her Binding, E away from her soil, she can shield herself from your third Q, but that's why you only try to do damage with your skills and not your ult. If she ults you, you can attempt to E out. This is a fairly challenging lane, as Morgana can push easily. She does need to get very close to use her soil, so try to capitalize on that.

Max Q.

VS

Nasus

Easy

Eat him alive early. NEVER leave your lane. Only leave when you have Teleport, then do what you have to do and back - teleport top/walk back if you're in top side jg/teleport top. Do not let him farm past 250 stacks. If you do, he will end up outtrading you since he's most likely gotten a Frozen Heart by then. Freeze lane close to YOUR tower so he can't. This, of course, means to let him have some stacks. It's a risk I feel is well worth it.

Max Q.

VS

Nidalee

Medium

You can wall her spears. Don't step in her traps; they pop your passive.

If she misses her spear and is too close, all in.

Max Q.

VS

Nunu

Easy

A lot of AP Nunu's burst can be countered with your Wind Wall, like his snowball. So do that.

If you get caught in his ult, try to E out of it. Use him or nearby minions. Remember, the longer you stay, the more damage you're gonna take if you don't escape.

VS

Olaf

Medium

This guy, you can eat early. Once he hits 6, not so much. It is TERRIBLY important that you hit 6 before he does, which means always picking Teleport on him. If you don't, he will ult your ult then play passively until he has it back up. If he ults, you probably died, though. Wall his axe toss if he's chasing you. E to dodge it if he's harassing you.

Max Q.

VS

Orianna

Medium

Since you can E away from her ball, it's easy to get to her. However, she can E herself, then W while you're there to do some free damage. For this reason, you want to E to her, then E away as soon as possible, because if she does do that, she's wasted a lot of mana. If she uses her ult and hits it, you've probably lost the trade unless you ult her as well

Max E.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

His passive might be annoying, but you can pop it easily by landing a stray Q. His all in hurts, but is mitigated by your own passive. If he uses his spear on you, wall it, then all in. Do not E him until he stuns you; then E him. Knock him up if he tries to leave with his ult, but be careful, because he might be baiting you to overextend.

Max Q.

VS

Renekton

Hard

His close-range damage is really bad for you, since you have to be in there. His ult plus his probable sunfire cape will make fighting him a really big pain. Try to get as much damage as possible in every trade you can without losing the trade.

Max Q.

VS

Rengar

Medium

Do not let him jump you. If you do, say goodbye to your health. Wall his empowered bola.

Max E.

VS

Riven

Hard

She excels in close range; you need to be close range. Poking her with your Q is dumb since she can E W to close the gap and stun you, then Q AA Q AA Q AA where did half of your health go?

Max Q or E depending on how aggressive she is.

VS

Rumble

Easy

His flame spitter may sound like an issue, but he actually isn't too bad. Wait for him to poke with his projectiles, then when he does, all in. He'll turn around while his spitter is up, which means it won't hit you. If he doesn't turn and keeps fighting back, E around him as much as possible to dodge the flames.

Max Q.

VS

Ryze

Medium

His root isn't bad because you can still use autos and your Q and W. If he roots you, just use your W at him, and his Q and E will not affect you. His cooldowns are annoying, though. Never all in if you don't have Wind Wall.

Max Q.

VS

Shen

Easy

Wall his projectile, all in. His taunt works against him if you have on-hits like Statikk Shiv and Blade of the Ruined King. Use your third Q to stop his ult.

Max Q.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

She has a lot of chase potential, but if you first buy Blade of the Ruined King, she becomes easy. Tank stats don't work very well against percent health magic damage.

Max Q.

VS

Singed

Easy

Just... Just bully him. E Q E Q E Q E Q E Q E Q E Q E Q E Q E Q

Max E.

VS

Sion

Medium

You can E out of his slam range.

...
...
...
that's really all you need to know.

Max Q.

VS

Swain

Hard

Swain is the biggest, baddest bird around. His spell vamp kills. You can kill him pre-6, but post-6, you will need help.

Max E, and stay on your toes.

VS

Syndra

Hard

As far as I remember, there was this one point where Dark Sphere -> Force of Will couldn't be wind walled. That may have been fixed. I'll get back to you / tell me in the comment section.

Her Dark Spheres are constant harass, her push will ALWAYS find a way to knock out your passive, and her all in is ferocious against you if she lands stun.

Grab a Hexdrinker if you're having difficulty.
Max E.

VS

Talon

Medium

A good Talon will choose the correct moments to all in you. This is actually while you're in the middle of your last E.

A bad Talon will waste mana on Rake early and let you all in him for free.

Max E.

VS

Teemo

Easy

The reason why this might be hard is because of his blind. If you buy a Hexdrinker, though, he's a baby.

Bully him early.

Max Q, and get an Oracle's Lens and pop it as you're fighting him to watch for shrooms.

VS

Trundle

Hard

He has an infinite Blade of the Ruined King damage/lifesteal active at level 6. You can windwall the returning part of it, though. You can't windwall what it does to you.

His all in will always be stronger than yours if he gets ahead on you. You have to discourage that by snowballing first. It isn't easy, and that's why he isn't easy either.

Max Q.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

So he's a baby before 6, and then hits this disgusting defensive spike after 6.

What you want to do is make him use his ult, then hit him with your third Q, delay it, then use your ultimate. This will shave off a lot of time out of his ultimate.

Max Q.

VS

Veigar

Medium

You can Windwall his everything bar his airstrike and his stun. Do NOT move anywhere if he boxes you in; stay on one side to bait his airstrike, move to the other side and windwall. His poke is meaningless. Do not let him farm; shield your minions so he can't.

Max Q.

VS

Vel'Koz

Easy

You cannot wall his ult. Everything else, you can.

Max E.

VS

Viktor

Medium

You can wall his laser and his Q. If you end up walling his laser as he alls in you, then all in right back.

Max E.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

If he hits items before you, you've lost the lane unless you go hyper aggressive and still end up not getting outdamaged. If you ult, he can pool immediately after he lands which makes it null and void unless he pushed too far. You can stop the healing part of his skill by using your wind wall as it hits you.

Max Q.

VS

Wukong

Easy

You can dodge most of his damage with your E. Buy an Oracle's Lens so you can see him while he's stealthed, so you can always land that precious third Q.

Put three points in E, then max Q.

VS

Xerath

Easy

Please wall his stun. If you do, just run in and go ham.

Three points in E, then max Q.

VS

Yasuo

Hard

Alright! I get to make fun of the champion that you're playing because you're playing against him!

Some tips and tricks:

YOU CAN NULLIFY HIS WIND WALL BY WIND WALLING HIS WIND WALL.

Your Q can be wind walled. Not just the third Q.
Wall his projectile third Q, and E Q your third Q in order to guarantee a knockup. If he Es you as you E into him, then, uh... awkward.

Build AD against him. Yes. I said it. Not crit, build AD. This means you have to start Long Sword, farm your ass off, finish Bilgewater, get Boots of Speed, then all in. Do not build crit early. Yasuo vs Yasuo is dependent on how much damage you do since his crits are reduced in damage and aren't above 50% in the early game.

Max E against him, so you can constantly dodge his Q while using your E Q to harass him. If you just want to do damage in bursts, max Q. Always pop his Flow by using E Q near him then using E Q to get out.

VS

Zed

Hard

After playing both champions extensively in the past few days and weeks, I've finally decided to give in and admit that this is a Yasuo SOFT counter.

Zed can move much faster than you because, unlike you, he can become untargetable and blink twice in one fight. You can only dash, which still leaves you susceptible to skillshots like his shuriken. Zed outranges you and if you go in on him he can W E Q himself since you're on him, and proc Thunderlords while getting an auto off and probably proc-ing his passive too. At level 6 it's almost impossible for you to ult him because hitting a knockup on him is like trying to land a skillshot on a The Package'd Homeguarded Corki. It's not easy, he's sort of too fast for that.

You have to play safe. Farm up. Try to get your jungler to gank early and bait Zed's shadow so he has to at least burn a flash to escape the gank. Don't try to exert more map pressure than him because once Zed has ult it's almost guaranteed for Zed to gank a side lane and get something out of it.

I'd tell you to max E but it all depends on how the Zed is playing. If Zed is harassing you more than farming then max E.

VS

Ziggs

Medium

You can't wall his ult, but you can wall his bouncing bomb. Use your E to dodge his moves.

Max E.

Tips and Tricks with Yasuo Back to Top

  • You can use your ultimate to hit confirm blind tornadoes. If you're in no need for a red trinket, get Greater Stealth Totem. Hit escaping enemies over walls with your third Q, and if you hear the sound that usually comes out, ward over the wall while mashing R. Note, you might ult yourself into a bad spot, so if you hear more than one hit confirm, don't do it.
  • Similarly to the previous point, if you find yourself chasing an enemy but hit your knock-up while they enter a bush, it is wise to ward the bush to gain vision to allow yourself to use your ultimate.
  • If you push to the enemy's tower and you're confident in a dive and have Flash, you can hit your knockup under their tower, ult, and Flash to three different spots depending on minion placement. If your minions are fighting enemy minions out of tower range, Flash towards them and use E to escape tower range. If their minions are just arriving to lane, either Flash to catch up to them and E towards the enemy jungle to escape or just E through them and then Flash over the wall. If no enemies are there but you can afford to walk for a second or two, Flash over the wall into Raptor/Wraith camp.
  • Your wall is instant.
  • Don't E Q the minions unless your point is to push. You need them to E through and to freeze.
  • Q speed also scales attack speed.
  • E will stack things such as Static Charges (Statikk Shiv passive)
  • Your ult will position you around tower range if you're confirming the ult around the border of the tower range. You don't have to be scared about reappearing in tower range and tanking tower shots while ulting if you hit them around the edge.
  • You can use your ult to dodge skillshots that travel.
  • If you use your E Q on your third proc on champions, don't ult immediately. Auto attack them once, then ult. You can Q while you're coming down from the ult.
  • An easy way to outplay as Yasuo is to walk into a bush, then windwall, Q, and E. You do damage while separating you from the enemy and also blocking any potential skillshot-related CC.
  • Your third Q has an unfortunate delay in terms of cooldown. At your attack speed / subsequent Q cooldown cap, your first two Qs will be 1.33 seconds, but your third will be a little over 2 seconds. Keep that in mind.
  • Instantaneous skillshots will not be blocked by your wind wall. This includes Lux's ultimate and Xerath's laser.
  • You can windwall and Q at the same time.
  • Your E Q will only do critical damage to one enemy hit. Don't be fooled if it says it crits every enemy hit; you can see the damage dealt is higher for one enemy.
  • If you think that you have enough burst to hit an ultimate and a crit Q and kill your enemy, but you're really low on health and with no shield, then ult anyway if you hit the knockup. This is because you gain your shield back once you ult. Keep in mind that if there's a very persistent DoT effect on you (such as Ignite or Udyr's Tiger Stance) then it will pop your shield in the middle of your ult, and you may not have enough shield to soak their counterattack.
  • Most Ionians are bad or even matchups for you, which is strange because Yasuo was exiled from Ionia. These are people like Irelia, Riven, Akali, Kennen, Syndra, Yasuo, and Lee Sin. Learning the lore can sometimes help.

Final Conclusion Back to Top

You've now seen all the damage that this exiled samurai can do! You've seen how to use your E properly to gain the heavy hand in lane.

Some closing words:
  • While 157.pngYasuo can do tons of damage, his early damage isn't as strong as his late-game propensity to two shot carries. Don't get it over your head that you can duel anyone early; slows are your biggest weakness, and you dont have much crit chance early.
  • 157.pngYasuo is good. But he takes a lot of practice. Don't be scared of feeding your first 10, 50 or 100 games. Just try your best. I recommend taking him into intermediate bots first, trying to 1v5 in the mid game, and if you win, go to normals. If you can quadra or penta every other 10 games, you're ready to ranked. If your KDA is less than 1.5 every game, keep practicing in normals. Sometimes, 157.pngYasuo mirror matches are the best way to learn, since a better 157.pngYasuo will teach you how to do it by destroying you.
I'd like to give a LOT of credit to one of my friends in League of Legends named 157.pngTJG3. He's a mid lane main and we initially met over a 157.pngYasuo mirror lane that I'd beat him in, but now I'm not so sure if I can do it again. He's shown me that I have a propensity for trying to help others, and this guide was a great way to express what I want to express to thousands of people. Huge hugs to him <3

About me Back to Top

Hi! My name is hi its ryuu.

You might be fooled by my rank, thinking that I'm just a Silver player who abuses his low ELO to carry as 157.pngYasuo, but that's far from the truth. I play with a lot of Plat and Diamond friends in custom 5v5s and in normals as well. I don't enjoy the prospect of Ranked. There's too much gamble.

My 157.pngYasuo knowledge is pretty extensive. He was my first main, and hasn't failed me yet. I hope you enjoy what I've got to give you!

If you have any questions that you'd like me to answer, or anything you want discussed, please comment it. I will check back weekly. If you have beef with me, or want to flame me for believing that I know how to play a high skillcap champion but am in Silver, then that's fine too. I accept criticism.

Updates! Back to Top

As of now, I'm revamping the Abilities section. I started with the passive but had to do something else. Sorry. I'm also going to extend this into Jungle Yasuo and what to do in teamfights! (10/6/2015)

I fixed the Abilities section. It should be easier to read now. Corrected a minor mathematics error about his ultimate. Over time, I will update the matchups section (probably one per day or two days) in order to give deeper insight on how Yasuo can match up to that champion. I will also add champions and items as they are placed into the meta. (10/6/2015)

In less than 12 hours, this guide has gained over 150 views! (The rest are me proofreading over and over and over and over) I thank you guys for your support, and thanks to Lolking and its staff for considering my guide worthy enough to approve my guide as some of its finer ones! On a smaller note, I updated Ahri's matchup, added a conclusion, and fixed some bad diction. (10/7/2015)

Because I was talking about it with a friend, I added a Lee Sin matchup. I have added more tips and tricks to the aptly named "Tips and Tricks" section. (10/7/2015)

My updating will decrease the more I update, since the more I change things for the better, the less things there are to change. Please don't be put off.

Oh. My. God.

In the span of one day, I received around 2.5 thousand views. The first day gave me 200.

You guys are the best. Some people struggle to get 20 views in a day, but I had the privilege to get it this far in this short amount of time. Thanks!
I will be double-timing my updates now. Starting now!
Updated the matchups for Akali and added an Aatrox matchup. (10/8/2015)

Uh. Riot? You forgot to tell us that Yasuo's Q has a much more severe damage debuff than his autos. (10/9/2015)

I got sick, so I didn't update. My bad. Added different starting build and another troll build, and updated the Malzahar matchup. (10/13/2015)

I'm going to be frank. I'm in a guilty spot right now since I can't follow up on a promise that I made days ago; that I'd update frequently. It's not happening; I didn't factor schoolwork into the equation. Durr.

I'll try as hard as I can, and I'm pressed for time even as I update this. I'll attempt to make time. (10/15/2015)

Added a bunch more tips and tricks and added a Nunu matchup. (10/21/2015)

Updated the items section and the stat changes reflect in the abilities section. [11/12/2015]

Clicked the wrong mastery. Woops. [11/16/2015]

Finally the comments update, so I'm able to reply. I'm very happy with the positive feedback, and I know there's a lot of room to improve (hence the dislikes [or it could just be since Korea won Worlds. Again.]) so I'll be checking in periodically to change things.

Because the items changed (especially Last Whisper) I changed the Abilities section a little. I've also changed a misleading description of Wind Wall. [12/7/2015]

Warlord's Bloodlust got nerfed, Thunderlord's Decree is the new cool. (12/17/2015)

I've been busy lately getting my life together and managing my education/personal life, so I haven't been updating. Bumped up a few item descriptions and the like, and am now actually working on a Jungle section. I've also updated the Zed matchup. (2/3/2016)

I am very sorry about not updating for two whole patch iterations. Jeez. My life has not been healthy, and some unfortunate circumstances have risen. All in all, I've added a section on a specific mastery tree that people are now willing to get at times. (3/2/2016)
