Masteries Back to Top

Grasp of the Undying greatly helps sustain health in the laning phase. As the game goes on, it will allow you to regain more and more health, as it scales with max health. Take it if you're building tank.

Take the Fervor of Battle mastery if you're not building tank.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    All-around good start.
Start this if you're going to rush Phage for the kiting power.
Against champions with long-range autos and good poke.
Against AD champions with strong early-games, such as Riven.
    never forget
Good against difficult lanes. Get this after your first back if you're low on gold and forced to farm.

Core Items

Lifesteal Choices: If you are playing versus a heavy tank in lane, or the enemy team is tanky, get Blade of the Ruined King. Otherwise, get Mercurial Scimitar vs magic damage/CC, Death's Dance vs bursty teams, or Bloodthirster if you are dominating.
Get Mercury's Treads vs magic damage or CC, Ninja Tabi vs auto-attackers, and Boots of Swiftness vs constant slows (e.g. Mundo or Ashe). Only get Berserker's Greaves if you are dominating the enemy team.
Example tank build. Trinity Force>Frozen Mallet>Tank Items
Split-pushing/dueling build. PD>IE>BORK>Tank vs relatively squishy teams. PD>BORK>IE>Tank if you need dueling power early. BORK>PD>IE if you're against a heavy tank in lane and the enemy team is tanky; also good against poke lanes.
Classic mid lane carry build. Maw/GA can be switched for other defensive items. PD can also be taken instead of Statikk Shiv if dueling power is needed.

Situational Items

Get Hexdrinker early against high-burst AP champions.
    Tank item choices.
Titanic Hydra is viable if you built full tank. Take it if you need extra damage late game for pushing or carrying your team.
Take Mortal Reminder vs high health regeneration champions (e.g. Mundo or Swain). Take Lord Dominik's Regards against very tanky teams.
Take this if the enemy team is very AD-heavy, and stack armor.

VS

Ahri

Medium

Relatively easy lane, if you know how to use your e efficiently. Use E a lot on minions to dodge her abilities. Also, your windwall can block all her abilities. This is a skill matchup if the enemy is

VS

Akali

Medium

She can all-in you easily, as you are squishy. Make sure to buy pink wards to counter her stealth, and try to have your tornado constantly up post-6, in order to counter her dash. However, you are stronger early game.

VS

Anivia

Hard

This is an annoying lane, due to her poke and constant CC. Get windwall at level 3 and try to use her weak early game to your advantage. Ask for ganks early so you can avoid getting baited by her passive later on.

VS

Annie

Hard

Her targeted poke and CC are extremely strong against Yasuo, making her one of his strongest counters. Roam whenever you can, as you will likely get dominated in lane.

VS

Azir

Medium

He has strong poke, but you can outplay his Q azirQ.png, using your E.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Play aggressively early game, as you have the advantage then. Later on, she can easily 1v1 and kill you.

VS

Garen

Medium

Garen completely destroys Yasuo early on. One Q+E combo will greatly lower your health, and you can't dash out, since you are silenced. Later on, you should be able to kite and poke him, using enemy minions to your advantage.

VS

Katarina

Easy

She isn't much of a threat to you unless she roams and gets fed. You should win this lane; make sure to use windwall when she uses her ult.

VS

Kayle

Hard

Really annoying lane. She can easily keep your shield down, and can sustain through your damage. Wait to use your ult on her after her own ult is down.

VS

Nasus

Medium

Be aggressive early and spam your Q at him to stop him from killing minions. Late game, you can do almost nothing to him by yourself, so make sure to stay with your team. Nasus isn't a hard counter, but he outscales Yasuo.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Early game, this lane should be difficult. Try to stay under your tower to prevent him from going all-in and killing you early. You should out-scale him late game.

VS

Riven

Medium

If the Riven doesn't know mechanics, this lane should be easy. However, this should be a difficult lane if the enemy Riven is good. When she tries to dash to you, use your E on minions to avoid getting hit. Your windwall can block her ultimate's second cast. Play passively in lane and make sure to ping if Riven is missing, as she might be roaming for kills.

VS

Swain

Hard

This is a really annoying lane and your shield will have nearly no uptime. Swain's CC and DPS destroy you. Make sure to get Mortal Reminder against this champion.

VS

Vel'Koz

Easy

This should be an easy lane, as Vel'Koz is squishy early game and you can use your E to dodge his abilities. Your windwall can block all of his abilities but his ultimate.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

Easy match-up early on. You can all-in him early and get first blood if you take ignite. He only becomes a problem to you later on in the game, if he gets fed.

VS

Xin Zhao

Hard

He counters you in lane. Watch out for his E+Q combo, which can greatly lower your health, if not kill you. If he tries to use this combo, dash to a minion before he can use his third Q hit. Save your third Q to cancel his dash towards you.

VS

Yorick

Medium

No one plays this champion, so I have no idea.
