Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png - Must use spell, non negotiable. Synergies with Yasuo's kit, allows to initiate/escape as well as pull out high level mechanical outplays.

3.png - You should be using this in 90% of games as Yasuo has no escape. Exhaust can be used similarly to ignite to chase/finish off enemies, but has far more utility as it can be used defensively, especially useful to survive early game ganks. If you consider the slow that allows you to get more autos in and the MR/ARMOUR reduction this ability adds just as much damage to your kit as ignite does. You MUST run exhaust 100% of the time against AD Assassin midlaners such as zed, talon, riven, if you want to have a chance at dueling them 1v1.

14.png - An offensive summoner that you should pick either when you are up against lower skill level opponents or against particular champions. Ignite makes it easier for you to make a cheesy all in in the earlier levels (1-5), but this summoner spell gets completely outclassed by exhaust mid-late game and lacks utility. If the enemy team has a Dr Mundo, Soraka, Swain, Fiddlesticks, Vladimir, Volibear you need to make sure that either you, or your support runs ignite. If you are up against one of these champions and your support insists on running exhaust then you should definitely run ignite. If one of the above champions is not in your game, I would highly suggest running exhaust instead.

12.png - I would still recommend running exhaust, but this is a viable summoner for any melee mid champion, as you take a lot of damaging during early game last hitting. It allows you to recall early and buy potions to always stay healthy and avoid being a low hp target for ganks. Also very useful against unpredictable/high mobility junglers like Evelynn, Shaco and Udyr, as it allows you to roam to other lanes without risking getting caught by the enemy jungler during your rotation.

1.png - Extremely situational, I wouldn't recommend running it. Yasuo is very strong from levels 1-3 and if you run cleanse then you essentially can't go for an early kill or trade because you shouldn't be able to kill the other laner 1v1 without an offensive summoner. Quicksilversash should be your third/fourth item on yasuo in most cases, so you won't need cleanse lategame. I think cleanse is viable mostly on AP mid laners, as most AD assassins do end up building QSS/Mercurial scimitar anyway.

ALL OTHER SUMMONERS = NO, JUST NO.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

I don't feel the need to go in depth here about the ferocity tree. I know some people prefer thunderlords, but I think Warlord's becomes superior as soon as you get your first zeal. You can heal in lane from your third Q hitting the enemy and the extra attackspeed and heal is much better lategame than what thunderlords has to offer.

If you don't trust me, check out the koreans - they know their stuff. Right now, practically every challenger pro/semi pro midlaner in korean solo que is using warlords on yasuo, so I suggest you and I do the same :D

The resolve tree is much stronger on yasuo than cunning, mainly due to the Runic Armor mastery. 8% Stronger passive shield + bloodthirster shield + steraks shield (potentially) + maw shield (potentially). This mastery synergises perfectly with both your kit and your itemization.

I won't be explaining what each ability does individually, if you are completely new to Yasuo I recommend you watch the champion spotlight - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkM20LgOdKQ. All the abilities there are visually demonstrated and explained far better than any paragraph I can write.

You should always be maxing yasuoE.png on Yasuo as it allows you to get the most out of trading during laning phase. The only alternative you could do to the above skill order is taking yasuoQ.png level 1 and yasuoE.png level 2. This would be appropriate against strong level 1 bullies such as pantheon, gangplank, corki etc.

You should be aiming to dish out as much damage as you can to the enemy when they are knocked up. When you knock someone up with yasuoQ.png, don't just use yasuoR.png straight away. Auto attack them once and use your E while they are in the air, only clicking yasuoR.png at the very last second, right before they are about to land.

Remember that you can use yasuoR.png from any knockup caused by one of your teammates, so when you are in teamfights, it is often wise to not go in with yasuoR.png on the first knockup you see but wait for one that hits multiple people to maximize the effectiveness of your ultimate.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

What you should be starting with in 90% of matchups.
If you are up against an ad assassin like Riven that is extremely difficult to outplay, this allows you to lane safely. Also I would recommend cloth armour against Pantheon and Gangplank as they both often start with a corrupting potion and out-sustain you if you have a dorans blade.

Core Items

This is a build that works if you are behind, even or ahead. If you are behind, as long as you have IE + static you should be able to deal enough damage in fights before you die.
If you have very few to no knockups on the team, this is a great build to splitpush with. It allows you to duel any top/mid laner and the movement speed/utility from trinity helps with pushing towers as well as retreating fast when enemies come for you.
This is my new favourite build! I would highly recommend you try it, rushing phantom dancer allows you to get the same attack speed as you would from trinity+static shiv, and the 12% reduced damage is essentially better than trinity's 250 hp. So all in all, phantom dancer gives you a static shiv + half a trinity force, a very cost efficient item!

Situational Items

After your first 4 core items (mentioned above) you can pick up any of these as the last 2.
3139.png - You should be building this in almost every game as late game, one positional mistake, getting binded or stunned can mean throwing the game. This item always gives you another chance! Plus, there is nothing more frustrating than landing a godlike third yasuoQ.png, knocking up 3-5 members and being unable to cast yasuoR.png as you are stunned, but with this item, you can always cleanse and cast your ultimate!
That said, some games there may be pure/mostly knockup CC which you can't cleanse. In that case, don't bother getting this item and go for one of the others.

3053.png - As your ultimate puts you right in the middle of the fight, this item is GREAT for helping you survive. Plus, it synergizes well with your masteries and passive shield. If the other team has a lot of mixed damage, this is a good pickup (E.G. AP top + AD jungle + AP mid + ADC + support).

3026.png - If you are ahead, this is a great item. It allows you to initiate super ballsy and not worry about dying. Perfect for when you are ahead, but your team is too afraid to initiate as it allows you to take the initiative without dying.

3156.png - If the enemy has at least one AP mage (e.g. orianna mid or lissandra top), I suggest getting this item. Shield and lifesteal synergize with your masteries and it is a great offensive+defensive pickup.

3153.png - Useful against compositions where there are multiple tanks and they have purchased thornmail. This item makes you do a lot more damage and when built alongside 3072.png allows you to actually NOT KILL YOURSELF hitting tanks that have thornmail :^)

3036.png - Similar to BOTRK, build this if you are having trouble doing damage to tanks AND those tanks do not have thornmails.

3143.png - Great pickup against heavy AD compositions.

VS

Ahri

Easy

Her charm projectile speed is slow and you should be always able to react with windwall. She can only kill you when your windwall is down, so make sure if you have used windwall and she has her ultimate up, you play safe by your tower and give up a few cs if need be until your windwall cooldown is back up.

VS

Annie

Hard

Very hard lane. Annie has very long range on her autoattacks and can harass you to death. You are able to block her Q with your windwall, but she still keeps her stun active. So if she is at 4 stacks and ready to stun on next ability, you block her q with windwall but thanks to RITO she still keeps her stun and can use it on you immediately with her W.

If she has stun up, it is impossible to trade her. You have to farm and play safe, wait for the jungler to help you. There are small windows in between her stun recharging where you can go for trades but it's not worth it - if you die due to a misplay or a jungle gank and she gets ahead, she will LITERALLY one shot after level 6 and your lane will be over.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Skill matchup, I'd say 40-60 favouring cassiopeia If you can sidestep her abilities and use your windwall to avoid most of her E damage, you can beat her. Cassiopeia doesn't have escapes and neither do you so the jungler has huge impact in this matchup. If you get hit by her Q or W, then walk away and give up cs because the hp you will lose will not be worth the minions. Rather just give up a couple of cs and get the rest when she pushes, rather than let her drop you to 200hp, force you to back and result in you losing MULTIPLE WAVES of cs.

Don't think of it as playing scared, think of it as an investment = D

VS

Corki

Easy

Easy lane. You can windwall both phosphorusbomb.pngmissilebarrage.png so if you play correctly you can block most of his damage. You can also interrupt his valkyrie with a well timed third yasuoQ.png (knockup). Corki beats you level 1, but after level 3 you should be able to trade him just fine with windwall.

VS

Ekko

Medium

Annoying lane. If ekko gets ahead you won't be able to duel him. If you use your windwall to block his Q in lane when going in for a trade or if you can dash out of the way, you will win. Level 6 ekko is probably stronger than you in duels so unless you can get him down early, you should be looking at roaming to other lanes to snowball in this matchup rather than going for the straight up duel.

VS

Ezreal

Easy

Level 1 you will lose in damage but after level 3, easy trades if you dash through minions to catch up to him when he uses ezrealarcaneshift.png. Midgame and lategame your windwall can completely nullify his damage in teamfights and if he ever makes a positional misplay you will kill him with ease. Did I mention that you can windwall the damage from LITERALLY all 4 of his abilities??

VS

Fiora

Hard

Please nerf fiora riot.

VS

Gangplank

Hard

Absolutely disgusting lane. Gangplank is too strong right now, unfortunately. He will poke you down with his parley.png early on and if you go for trades you will, at best, go EVEN. I feel like because all gangplanks start with the corrupting potion, you HAVE to start cloth armour and pots to be able to sustain against his constant parley.png harass.

VS

Jayce

Medium

Skill matchup. You should try to force trades, if you are able to windwall his SHOCKBLAST, you will be able to win this matchup.

VS

Kassadin

Easy

Laning phase is easy as it gets. Initiate with yasuoE.png on him before he uses his nulllance.png, as his shield will otherwise eat the magic damage. Make sure you follow him if he roams to avoid kassadin snowballing

VS

Kayle

Hard
kayleQ.png can be hard/buggy to block using your wall. Your wall must already be up or go up as soon as her animation starts for the projectile to be stopped, if you try to wall after her animation has started it will legit just go through and hit you. Kayle is a complete counter to you both in laning and in teamfights (she ults whoever you go on).

The only thing you can do in this lane is start with yasuoQ.png level 1 and try farm whatever you can from range. I would dare suggest running teleport against kayle, because you won't be able to 1v1 her even with an offensive summoner. If your jungler does gank then you should be able to kill her without any ignite or exhaust. If your jungler doesn't gank, then teleport allows you to survive the lane and stock up on potions.

VS

LeBlanc

Medium

Skill matchup, favouring leblanc. You can duel her level 3-5, but as soon as she gets her ultimate you can't. Play safe from level 6 until you get static shiv and avoid trading. Once you get static shiv and if you can manage to windwall either of these abilities leblancchaosorb.pngleblancsoulshackle.pngleblancmimic.png then you can win a duel.

VS

Lulu

Medium

A good lulu will harass you with autoattacks and use luluw.png to disengage if you go for trades. You can, however, use windwall to block BOTH luluq.png and luluw.png. If you are super confident with your windwall reaction timings then go for trades and make sure to block luluw.png. If you aren't, it is completely fine - farm until static shiv before making any attempts at dueling her.

VS

Lux

Easy

Easiest matchup of your life. You can use windwall to block her luxlightbinding.png, as well as luxlightstrikekugel.pngluxlightstrikekugel.png is more tricky to block as you need intercept it using your wall while it is in mid air, if you wall too late then it might still land and hit you.

VS

Morgana

Easy

Use your windwall to avoid her darkbindingmissile.png. It's difficult for you to kill her after level 6, but prior to that you can certainly go for trades and all in her during laning phase. Otherwise it's equally acceptable to just farm and roam to other lanes in order to snowball.

VS

Orianna

Easy

Your yasuoW.png has an interesting interaction with her ball. The ball doesn't disappear if it hits your windwall, but it does stop moving upon hitting the edge of the windwall. Overall, you can easily trade her by dashing through creeps in the early game and there is room for some clever outplays using your windwall. FUN LANE !

VS

Pantheon

Hard

This is probably the equal worst matchup for yasuo, alongside kayle. He will outsustain you and constantly harass you with pantheon_throw.png. There's almost no way to actually beat him 1v1 during laning phase, so unless your jungler helps you out with some solid ganks, you will struggle to go even and likely fall behind in CS. Just remember that you do outscale pantheon, so your goal is to survive.

VS

Riven

Hard

Difficult lane. Riven does more damage than you in straight up duels. Earlygame I suggest starting cloth armour and just playing safe (only trade if she overextends and sits on top of your creeps in order to hit you). After level 6, she will most likely kill you even if you are able to dodge her rivenfengshuiengine.png using yasuoW.png. There is however a way to win this matchup. When riven uses her third Q, there is a small time window before she lands where you can dash through her and avoid all the damage and the stun. Look it up on youtube, if you can master this technique you will be able to duel her.

VS

Ryze

Medium

Apart from the first couple of levels you can't ever duel him. It just ends up being a farm lane so you will need to focus on other lanes to snowball.

VS

Swain

Medium

Always run ignite against him. The majority of his damage comes from swaintorment.png, so if you can successfully block it using windwall, you can win trades. If you can't, you will lose. Skill matchup!

VS

Talon

Medium

Yasuo is a stronger duelist than talon and in my opinion, stronger in the early game. Start dorans blade and attempt to outplay him in laning phase. Upon reaching level 6, talon can easily gank other lanes with talonshadowassault.png and if he ends up snowballing you will have a very hard time. Make sure to keep a record of when he goes MIA and if you can, follow him when he roams.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

EASY MATCHUP! You can use yasuoW.png to block every single one of his damaging abilities. You will win trades during laning phase and if he ever positions incorrectly he should die to you with ease. The only way you could lose this matchup is if he perfectly utilizes his destiny.png and snowballs off other lanes.

VS

Viktor

Medium

Skill matchup, your windwall can block both his viktorpowertransfer.png and viktordeathray.png. If he lands all of his abilities then you are very likely going to lose in duels.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

Super rough early game for you, make sure to run ignite. As soon as you hit your static shiv spike though, you should be able to duel him. So if he gets you low early with his harass and sustain, it's completely fine to recall and be set behind 10 cs or whatever just as long as you don't give up any kills.

VS

Zed

Medium

Skill matchup - you can dodge/block his primary damage abilities and he can dodge your knockups with his zedW.png or zedR.png. You are about equally strong levels 1-5 so feel free to try and trade/all in him early, but zed takes over from level 6-until you get your qss. Be very careful of his all in at level 6 and make sure to save your exhaust for right after he uses his zedR.png

VS

Zilean

Medium

Attempt to kill him during lvl 1-5 as you are far stronger. You can often bait out and dodge his timebomb.png by dashing through minions with yasuoE.png. After level 6, don't even try to trade or duel him - focus on farming and roaming to get ahead.

Conclusion Back to Top

I don't see the need of going into crazy maths or writing essay paragraphs on single abilities. This is a compact guide for people who are learning yasuo and want a build that is guaranteed to work in any elo. In my opinion, it is completely pointless to try and explain advanced mechanics, matchups and techniques like dashing through walls with your "E" using text.

If you guys feel very passionate about playing Yasuo and enjoy him a lot, I suggest you actually put time into watching full challenger games (there are plenty of those on youtube) on particular matchups that Yasuo has to play.  I guarantee you that watching one of those videos will let you discover most of the tips and tricks ofr that matchup and you can use them yourself and adapt them to your style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDtjR7MTLHo <--- this is the video I learned how to dash through walls from. It might be old, but it is the exact same concept and the angles you have to use are almost identical in the current season.

If you have any further questions or inquiries about the guide, or would like to chat with me for any other reason you can find me streaming at www.twitch.tv/bdoinkd

If I can achieve a 70% winrate with Yasuo against challenger opponents using this guide's mastery/rune/item build then so can YOU!
