Summoner Spells Back to Top

Updating my guide for season 6. There have been a lot of changes from last season, in the end Zac is not stronger or weaker than before. I have only played Zac 24 games this season in ranked. It was enough to get me to diamond again with a 75% win rate and 8.1 kda.

As for summoners there's no real choice here. Flash is really good to get your ultimate in the right position or chasing down target during ult. You will use flash as an offensive weapon most of the time.

Masteries Back to Top

After testing I say that going 0/18/12 gives the best for results. You can go 12/0/18 and go pure tank if your team have the damage. Going with cunning gives you that additional 5% cdr making you hit that nice 45%. Also thunderlords is really good for that needed burst in ganks.

Start with W to get faster jungle clear and Q on level 2. Don't even try to gank before level 3 when you have jump.

Max jump first, no exceptions. You need it to make good ganks, high burst and CC. Every level it gain shorter cd and higher range. When you hit level 5 it got enough range to do great ganks, 7 and you can jump longer than champion vision. More about that later. When E is maxed and you got cdr cap you can cast it every 6.6sec. That means you can jump in, do ult, do q and jump again. At the same time you spam W like crazy for more damage.

If your playing as a toplaner you should go for Q first, somtimes W. But this guide focus on jungler Zac.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Start

Core Items

This is what you want as soons as you can.
I pick armor boots 90% of the time as you get MR from other items.
Get one. Both gives 10% cdr now.
Always grab a purple if you can.
End with one, depending if you want more damage or tanky.

Situational Items

Zac start with the normal jungle items. Unlike most others he got self heal that allows him to never go back unless he wants. Still you should make your first back at level 4 to upgrade your jungle item once and get boots. Getting both part of the jungle item will give you more xp when farming jungle.

After that you should get Kindlegem, it makes clearing faster and makes you more tanky. You can also finish your jungle item. Makes you even more tanky but lower on damage.
After you got jungle item you want to upgrade the Kindlegem for hextech belt. This item is amazing, no longer do you have to flash to get inrage of dashers before you ult. Even a quick use of this item gives you the right position to push enemys in the right direction when you ult.

After that you go for the abyssal 3001_32.png. The damage you get from this item is so good. At this point you should be able to kill all soft targets with just jump ult. Still you are only at 35% cdr at this point, you need to get warmongers or spirit visage before reaching cap.

As last item you can pick in the direction that your team needs. Often its more tanky and I grab Omen.

Why Zac Back to Top

I been playing Zac from his release and its the most fun champion to play. What's make him different is his jump that changes how you jungle and how you gank. And nothing is more fun than defending a tower or totally destroy the enemy with Zac bouncing.

He's a strong champion and good vs most teams. He got lots of cc and burst that destroys in team fights. Zac is strongest mid game where almost no one can stand against him. Late game he can carry with his ultimate and engages. Only Amumu and Sejuani can do a better job than him there. But unlike them he got good ganks and fast clearing all through the game.

When to play Zac Back to Top

Goes well with:

He goes extremely well with 157_64.png. His ultimate got about the same range as your maxed E. You jump in and stun for 1second, he jumps in ult to stun even longer. During his ult you can ult to deal high damage. Your ult will not knock them as long Yasous ultimate is active, so they stay in the same spot. When his ultimate ends your bounce will knock them for more CC even if its the third bounce that hit them. After that your ult will end and you can jump with E again for another 1sec cc. It almost a total lock down for 5seconds for all targets hit. All soft carry's will die before Yasuo's ultimate even end, the rest is for finish the tanks. I been in some games where I and Yasuo ace the enemy team from doing a good engage that hit 4 or 5 targets. Its the range of it that makes it lethal. Ward their jungle and lane, they are never safe.

Avoid Zac when:

If the enemy picks a 79_64.png or a 105_64.png as jungler. Don't take Zac if you have other options. You will get behind and out ganked.

Zac's ult knocks quite a bit. Don't pick him if your team have any of these champions.
103_64.png34_64.png31_64.png61_64.png101_64.png
Unless they know how Zac works and how you play him. Your ult will make them miss spells that ends in you loosing team fights. If your team have any of them and you gank that lane, do not use your ultimate! Wait for them to cast all spells first before pressing that R button. If you are on skype/vent/ts etc with you team make sure to tell them to wait with their spells until you made your ult. It also slows them for easy target.
Look at Orianna, some say Zac is good with her becouse she can ult and then Zac jump and ult them all. In reality that never happens, Zac will go first and use ult before Orianna is even in range. You are the frontline, not your AP carry. In the end Zac will just knock them all away and spliting them, making Oriannas ult bad in that team fight. Might even push targets out of her ultimate and save them. Its not like she can use orb on Zac and let him jump in with it. That works on amumu becouse his Q got shorter range. On Zac the orb will despawn unless he do a short jumps, doing that is losing Zac's best skill. You can play around it but its easier to have a midlaner that works well with Zac, like Veigar. You knock them into his stun or he can stun them when slowed. After that he have the burst to finish even a tanky target.

How to use your jump Back to Top

Your E

Best ability you got. You can use it to get from base faster and do crazy engages. You can use E at base and have it ready again to jump the wall to get frog. After that you can jump between every jungle pack, reducing the time ruining around.

With this you can gank and engage in so many places and ways Im not even going to show it. Just keep out of sight and dodge wards the best you can. Find the unwarded routes and use them.

At rank 1 the range is useless and a good gank impossible. At rank 2 you can jump from middle bush to the center, depending on the lane that could make a kill. At rank 3 you can gank mid from bushes with good results. At rank 4 you can defend towers by jumping from jungle. You can also gank mid from all different directions now. When maxed at rank 5 you can do a lot of things with the amazing 7.2sec cd with 40% cdr.
  • Jump from jungle to middle of a lane
  • Jump from dragon/baron pit to red
  • Do Jump, Ult, Jump ganks
  • Jump longer than vision
This is the thing many people don't know or don't think about when playing Zac. You can jump longer then champions vision. If its 5v5 and they are pushing mid and you want to attack them, do it from your mid lane. They could be warding all sides and your jungle, dont matter, you can jump straight at them now. This can also be used when defending towers or ganking/counter ganking a lane. Doing this need practice, your jump is slightly longer than vision and you can easy be spotted doing it wrong. You can also do this at rank 4 if the target is running towards you, timing is everything.h.png
In this picture you can see that Yi is easy in jump range but his vision don't reach Zac yet.

The key of making good jumps is to make sure no one sees you charging your jump. Always stay out of vision range or hide in a bush. If not they can and will dodge your E and the gank is useless. Keep grabbing that wraith buff!

E  now stuns for 1 second. Because of that you have time after you land on a target. You can cast q and w before using ultimate. If you use ultimate when you land you lose 0.5sec of good cc and some damage, avoid that. The best way to use this stun is to position yourself. After the jump cast W and run around the target, making sure your ult will push them the right way. You can cast W while moving but don't use Q, no time for that. If you use Q you do more damage but the stun will drop before you can move all the way around, giving them a chance to flash before you activate ultimate. Also, when you run around the target make sure to take the way that gives you the blobs from your jump and W. If the knock direction don't matter or you land on the right position, do a melee swing, Q and W before using your R for most damage and CC.

Lastly, if you chasing a target that have high movement and can dodge your jump, use flash instead. Flashing to melee and do an instant E to stun them is sure to work. Not always optimal but keep it in mind.

In the jungle Back to Top

What to do?

Zac is not strong early game, before 6-7 your jump is short and ganks are not the best. And the cd makes you only able to use it once every fith. Most of the games you will do what you do best. Farm your jungle and counter gank. You got a good clearing time, fast movement between packs, great sustain and don't need mana. That doesnt mean you should let your lanes fight for themself. Keep vision up so you see what their jungler is up too. If he ganks you should counter it, Zac is tanky enough and got cc to win a 2v2 or 3v3 even in early game. Often vision is enough to keep your lanes safe when you farm up to 6.

With fast clearing and healing you should keep up with farming all game. You don't have to go back when you're low, farming will always get your health back up. Good guideline on what to do next is checking your ult cd.
You got ult? Gank something.
You just used your ult? Get farming.
You got 20sec left on cd and 1,5k+ gold? go back.

Exception for this is dragon timer etc.

Zac is also good on stealing enemy jungle. Not many junglers can chase you if you get caught. Jump a wall and you should be safe. But that mean you have to save your jump when killing that jungle pack. A good way to do this is kill a pack when you ward around his jungle. Wraith is perfect for this, you can kill the pack and smite for buff, ward the bush next to it and get a great spot for ganking mid. Just keep an eye on other lanes and enemy jungler.

Start in jungle.

A normal start is help from bot and smite that target. Grab the color buff and clear the last pack of that jungle. At this point you be around 40% hp, don't worry you never get lower than that. Go to the other side and clear all jungle on that side to reach level 4. Doing this will give the enemy team a level 3 gank top that you cant stop, if you skip golems/frog in your top jungle you can get there in time to counter it but you be level 3. Look at the top if he is in risk of a succesful gank or not. After you hit 4 you can go back to upgrade jungle item, or use both your potion charges to get back to 90% hp and do a gank. When you clear jungle for the first time make sure to use jump for starting every pack. Save time that way. You can jump from red to golems, np.

Smite.

Except for objectives you should save smite for wraith and frog for the buffs.  Don't smite anything else in jungle unless you have too. This is also the reason for ward jungle item, you can have wraith and frog buff all the time. Invisible ganks are the key for hitting the target with jump.
Dragon and Baron are easy for Zac to steal. You can smite them in the air of you jump. You can E in and steal it, use your ult to stun and get away. There is no reason for them to get any of them while you're alive.
You can also solo Drake at level 5 after first back. It takes some time but its doable, make sure you have a smite.

Early invades.

More and more people invade weak junglers at level 2-3. This is the only time Zac is vulnerable. If you dont use potions on the first color buff you will get low and a Lee could kill you in one combo. Easy way to deal with this is just to ward river at 1.40 before taking first buff. But that wont work it solo queue. Most players wont help you even if they see you getting invaded. If they did your passive would make you the perfect bait and get the team first blood. The best way to deal with the invades is to make a different start and hope they invade you. They might try to steal your blue and you already taken it. Then they lose time while you are happy farming somewhere else. Even if your top refuse to help you can start that side solo. It will take more time but you wont die. This is the chart I use to see where I start. Note, this is a bit outdated as almost no top laners solo a jungle pack.sss.jpg

One thing you cant forget is to make sure they don't know you start somewhere else. You need to keep hidden if you going to start top, or even better go get seen at drake then sneak your way top before 1.40. Most players aren't stupid, if you starting top side ask your bot to stay at their tower for 2.00. They wont lose farm and no one will have a clue that you started top. This also makes for a good level 4 gank bot-lane when junglers normally are top at that time.

Tips how to play Zac Back to Top

Melee and blobs.

You need to do melee attacks. Early game you can't clear jungle quickly unless you do melee every time you can. But that mustn't stop you from picking up all blobs as fast as you can. Try do melee, get a blob while waiting for swing, melee, blob, repeat. When fighting enemy's do exactly the same thing. If you have a Pantheon attacking you, stay calm and do melee, blob, melee, blob while spamming all abilities.
If you have red buff its even more important that you do melee. The damage and slow is the key for a good early gank.
Late game when you never get red and your ability do more than 10 melee swings you can stop doing them completely if you want. At that point your focus is to grab blobs to get healed and get more W casts. With high cdr you don't have time for melees anyway, its just grabbing the goo for damage.

Wards and vision.

Get a purple ward when you can. Jungle item should be wards and use them to see where the enemy jungler is. Warding enemy's wraith and blue buff helps a lot for your team. It even works when playing against Evelyn, ward next to the jungle pack to see when shes clearing it.

Always try get to river and kill the moving scaly fkers. You still get blobs and heal without getting damaged. Use this early game to heal up. Just make sure that they don't get stolen from you, need that vision for your team. They can be hard to get down the way they keep running. You don't have time to grab your blobs chasing them. Best way to deal with them is run up to them, melee attack them and do Q W and then use your jump over their head. Now they will turn so you can pick up the first 3 blobs while chasing it back the other way. Red buffs slow really helps getting them down.

Get wraiths often and smite them. You don't want it just to destroy wards. Its to make sure you're not spotted. When a jungler is missing, and a Zac as that, the enemy team wont try to dive lanes for kills. Keeping hidden is a good way to make sure your team don't get killed. You also know when you can wait for the perfect E. Nothing wrong waiting 15sec in middle bush if you know that they haven't seen you yet.

Your W.

If you missed it earlier, press W all the time as soon as you can. Thanks to the reduction you get from picking up blobs this will be your main damage spell late game. You can cast it every second if not more. Remember to keep using it and pick up blobs during your ultimate. But prioritize following your target, you can skip some blobs if needed.

Defending Tower.

Defending towers for free kills can be done at level 7. Most of the time you can stop up to three players attack it. You stand in the jungle behind the tower unseen. Make sure you hit the players with your jump. Try get all minions in your jump if you can, if needed you can smite if only one minion is still alive after landing. Then use R to push them melee to the tower. With your ultimate's slow they will die, only a Zed or Leblanc can get away. Using this tactic is also a great way to start a TF when your team is behind. Try to hit the adc and push it to the tower and your team.

Dragon.

Can you solo dragon? Yes, at level 5 after first back you can easy solo dragon.
Should I solo dragon? Not really.
Why? Solo dragon gets you low, around 20%. It also takes time, around 30seconds to solo. You can solo kill it when some conditions are met. First you got a purple ward or wraith buff to make sure its unwarded. Second, both mid and bot need to be pushed or at least even, not low or going back. Third, their jungler must be farming top jungle or ganking top.

So don't go drake to give it for free to the enemy. Instead you should farm and gank and wait for level 6. You should hit that around 6.30 and go straight for a bot gank with ult. Even if you don't get kill just get them low and force them back. Then bot can help you with dragon. Enemy junglers often got slower clearing time and should only be level 5 at this point. Also top laners usually use teleport after starting on a jungle pack or on their first back. That gives them teleport available at 7.30 as best. Do bot gank and dragon fast, top wont stop you from taking it.

Starting team fights.

This is the most important thing to get right. When you start a team fight. In late game one fail jump is all that needed to loose the game. You need to make sure that your team is ready to follow when you jump. The jump must be a hit on a carry or at least be in range for flash/hex to get behind him. To know when to jump is a bit of gamble that you learn the longer you play. In solo queue you don't know your team or how they will react. Make sure they know what you're doing and no one is going back that second.

Peel or don't peel.

If your team is far behind or they got many soft assassins you should peel and help your team. It's not something I do often, your team can deal with without Zac's help. Instead you do the attacks and play the assassin part yourself. Hit a carry with jump and they are as good as dead. A good ult hit at least 4 targets and your team can kill them off before some assassin can reach your carries. If they attack first for some reason, its your job to stop them from killing your soft players by stunning them all.

Hextech'ing.

New item for this season. Like I said before this can be like an extra flash for you with only 40sec cd.
Many times you gank they will react before your jump lands, they will flash away or do some dash ability. With hextech you can always dash to them and ult them anyway, making it much easier to get them. Even if you hit them you can dash to the other side of them to push them to the right direction for your team.
Note, Hextech can not be used during a jump and unlike flash you cant use it during your ult. That's why you should use flash for hitting more targets in your ult. Also the obvious use it for flashing walls as Hex can't do that (I was able to dash though an Anivia wall once, might been a bug though).
Last part is the damage from it. You can use it to deal damage and get close enough for W to finish the target. Dont underestimate the damage the Hex can do.
