Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png
Flash is a pretty self explanatory summoner spell. Escapes and assassinations made easier.

14.png
Kill potential is everything on zed. Although you should be able to quickly burst down targets late with little trouble, ignite is a big part of your mid game damage that zed is known for.

Masteries Back to Top

12/18, the usual thunderlord path. Some like to take double edged sword rather than feast, but I personally prefer feast. Again, secret stash and assassin are both used however I find that assassin benefits you greater than a little extra health provided you are able to play safe and avoid getting dominated early.

Taking feast over double edged sword is a simple personal preference, both are equally as good and in some matchups and compositions you will find that the latter is better. Taking CDR over Penetration is once again a personal preference as both can be used, however I prefer CDR due to the great potential for a legitimate 45% CDR Build on zed.

Max Zed's shuriken first for highest possible damage output. Landing double or even triple shurikens is vital in early and mid game all-ins. Max your shadow slash second for better mid game duelling and assassination potential, finishing with your Living shadow maxed at level 18. Take points in Death Mark whenever possible for obvious reasons.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Basic start for Zed.
More passive start; see below for champions where this is a better choice.
    Heavy aggression start

Core Items

    First buy
    Second Buy
    Third buy
    Example end game build

Situational Items

Hard AP lane, Swap for bloodthirster.
    If Focused, Swap for Bloodthirster.
For larger source of AOE damage if your team is lacking in it. Swap for either Bloodthirster or Cleaver.
Strong choice if you are trading 1 for 1 often; Swap for Bloodthirster.

Make sure to always itemise against your opponent. Buy an early last whisper if you see early armour, a QSS if an enemy ap champion with hard CC or debuffs starts getting fed (Fizz and Lissandra are good examples), and a Guardian Angel if you trade 1 for 1 often.

VS

Ahri

Medium

Skill matchup.

VS

Anivia

Medium

Annoying with her passive and high amount of poke, but not extremely hard. Hexdrinker is a very strong choice here.

VS

Annie

Medium

Skill matchup; dodge her ult with your own. Try to fight and trade when her stun is down.

VS

Azir

Easy

His ult is relatively easily dodged with your own and you can shadow swap back to him if he crosses to the other side of his wall.

VS

Brand

Medium

Avoid fighting in minion waves as his ult will shred you faster than you can him.

VS

Diana

Hard

Annoying shield and high burst potential combined with escape provention. Hard lane, buy early hexdrinker.

VS

Fizz

Medium

Skill matchup. Dodge his ult with your own; don't engage while he has his playful trickster up.

VS

Kassadin

Easy

He has nothing on you pre 6. Go as aggressive as you want but make sure to ward your lane before you do. Post 6 you just have to make sure all damage for your mark goes down before he can Riftwalk away, but you will still beat him 1v1.

VS

Katarina

Easy

Pre-6 You plain and simply outdamage her provided you land at least 1 shuriken. Punish her with your w-e-q combo when she moves up to poke with her Q. Post 6 she becomes an even easier lane, with her initiate also being her only escape. You can dodge most of her ultimate between your own ultimate and shadow swap. Wait for her to jump on you and reply to Death lotus with Death Mark before escaping with your shadow and swapping back to your ultimate after her channel has finished, putting damage down with your e q and passive for your death mark to finish her off.

VS

Kayle

Hard

Possibly Zed's hardest lane. Her ult can negate your entire combo. Try to poke early and get her behind in cs to stand more of a chance later.

VS

Lissandra

Hard

Buy a QSS later in the game.

VS

Lux

Easy

Dodge her Q and it's all ogre.

VS

Malzahar

Hard

Combination of heavy poke and powerful lockdown makes him very strong against zed.

VS

Morgana

Medium

Will start off in morgana's favour but slowly slips to Zed as the lane progresses.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

Stay in the minion wave so that her Q won't hit you.

VS

Orianna

Easy

Similar to lux, if you can predict and dodge her ultimate the fight is over. Can be annoying pre-6 and hexdrinker may be a good idea despite being able to beat her 1v1 relatively easily.

VS

Riven

Medium

Skill matchup. Dodge her stun or ultimate with your own.

VS

Swain

Hard

Crazy sustain and prolonged damage swain possesses makes it more in his favour.

VS

Talon

Medium

Skill matchup. Falls in talon's favour post 6 due to his ability to dodge a large portion of zed's damage through his ultimate.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

Easy to poke and his stun can be dodged, but once he gets a zhonyas the matchup becomes slightly more in his favour.

VS

Veigar

Easy

Easy lane. Poke with your w-e-q combo often. Try to freeze the wave at the center of the lane as he has no escape.

VS

Vel'Koz

Easy

Dodge his ult with your own.

VS

Viktor

Medium

He has a lot of poke, but if you can get on him the fight should be yours.

VS

Xerath

Medium

Hard to get in range, but once you do you can beat him in a fight.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Dodging his Q to prevent him from ulting is vital. Wards are extra important in this lane as he will commonly be paired with a knockup or displacement jungler, so make sure that when you go for a fight it is not a 1v2. If you can dodge his knockup, however, you should beat him solo.

VS

Ziggs

Easy

Similar to orianna, can be very annoying pre 6 with his poke potential but once you hit 6 the lane is over.

VS

Zilean

Hard

Similar to Kayle.

Pros and Cons of Shadow Man Back to Top

Pros

-High burst potential
-2 potential escapes
-Great poke and waveclear
-Easy to CS with use of passive

Cons

-Lacks hard crowd control
-Shut down by zhonya's and qss
-High skillcap and hard to mechanically master

Early game (Laning Phase) Back to Top

At level 1 you should look for all opportunities to land your q on the enemy; try to avoid whatever poke they throw down while making sure you keep up in cs. At level 3 you will unlock your WEQ combo, use it as much as possible but make sure that you have vision when doing so as tossing out your shadow leaves you prone to ganks. Once you hit 6 you will have some of the highest burst and roam potential in the mid lane, make sure you look for potential roaming opportunities particularly in the bottom lane to get your ADC ahead. At level 9 you gain rank 5 in your shuriken. This should mean that you can burst down any lane from 100-0 provided you land 2 or more shurikens. Keep up your CS as you need as much gold as you can get.

MAKE SURE TO WARD YOUR LANE IN THE EARLY GAME. ZED IS RELIANT ON USING HIS SAFE LANING PHASE TO HIS ADVANTAGE AND NOT DYING EARLY SO THAT HE CAN SCALE IN TO THE MID GAME.

Mid Game Back to Top

Mid game your main objective is to make a pick on the enemy carries (Mid lane and ADC, sometimes Jungle although this is uncommon in the current tank meta) and give your team an opening to engage for an easy fight. This is the point where Zed reaches his power spike and you must try and achieve a comprehensive team advantage through ganks and roaming as you will want to end the game before Zed starts to fall off.

Late Game Back to Top

Similar to the Mid Game, Kill the enemy adc, win the fight. This is the point where you should work on ending the game, as once the enemy achieves full build you will see zhonyas and qss across the board just for you. Zed makes a good splitpusher even after the nerfs that he has recieved to his attack speed, so if your team is able to cope it may be a good idea to push down a side lane. Splitpushing is reliant on you being able to 1v1 anyone on the map, however, so this may not be an option if you had trouble in the early or mid game.

They built a Zhonyas. What do I do? Back to Top

When the enemy carries have a Zhonya's or a QSS, there are a few factors that you must take in to account.

FOR A ZHONYA'S
1. How much crowd control they possess
If the enemy has a large amount of crowd control, they will have a  much easier time locking you down and either killing you, escaping, or letting their team clean up the job. If this is the case you should probably back out from the kill.
2. The approximate cooldown on their escape ability (If they have one)
If the enemy can escape and you know it there is no point in remaining in the area for the enemy team to come for assistance.
3. How much burst they can put out once the zhonya's times out
If the enemy has a high amount of burst potential and you have burned the cooldown on your abilities (Living shadow and Death Mark as chances are your q and e will be back up by the time it times out) Then escape is probably a good option. If not, then you can stay and kill them.
4. How much Vision your team has of the area
Let me put it this way. If you ult on to the enemy Twisted Fate and he hits his Zhonyas whilst you have no vision of the enemy team or the area, chances are there's someone with 19_64.png the scent of your blood.
TL:DR; you have 2 options when they hit the magical golden button. You stay and try to kill them if you have the damage and vision, or you back out because they can escape or bait you to their team.

KEEP IN MIND THAT THE SPLAT ON YOUR DEATH MARK TAKES LONGER THAN A ZHONYAS STASIS GRANTS. IF THE ENEMY HITS ZHONYAS IMMEDIATELY YOU CAN EASILY PILE ENOUGH DAMAGE ON TO THEM WITH A DOUBLE Q RIGHT AS THEY COME OUT OF IT FOR THE POP.
