Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png 14.png--> Most common summoner spells for Mid-lane Zed.

4.png 1.png--> Less common, but great against heavy CC.

New Runes Back to Top

231.png
For Zed, with the New Runes, there has been one clear front-runner for which best fits his style of play. His primary keystone is Domination, in which you take Electrocute.png?width=32Electrocute, Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 Sudden Impact, Eyeball%20Collection.png?width=32 Eyeball Collection, and Relentless%20Hunter.png?width=32Relentless Hunter. His Secondary tree consists of; Triumph.png?width=32 Triumph and Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32 Coup De Grace. This is a high damage page, which works well for Zed's play-style. The only major difference between the 2-listed rune pages, is that the second page takes Ravenous%20Hunter.png?width=32 Ravenous Hunter over Relentless%20Hunter.png?width=32 Relentless hunter. I think Zed benefits more from the out of combat move-speed granted from take downs (since he is an assassin who can roam well).

231.png
PRIMARY: Domination

Electrocute.png?width=32--> Electrocute is a buffed up version of old thunderlords decree. It's great for Zed's standard burst combo (W->E->Double Q) and he can proc it easily if he lands his abilities.

Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32--> Sudden Impact is good for our W, since it qualifies as a Dash. Extra lethality means extra damage. It also goes well since Zed builds a lot of lethality.

Eyeball%20Collection.png?width=32--> Eyeball Collection is good because we can build Duskblade and can roam for kills. Duskblade passive allows us to clear wards; which helps stack our Eyeball Collection, and our roaming can lead to take-downs, which also stacks Eyeball Collection.

Relentless%20Hunter.png?width=32--> Relentless hunter is the more common rune taken on the 3rd row of the Domination tree. Unique take-down's grant out-of-combat move-speed, which helps us roam and move around the map faster.

179.png
SECONDARY: Precision

Triumph.png?width=32--> Triumph is far and away the best out of the 3 options on the first row. Works great for tower dives and high-risk plays.

Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32--> Coup De Grace is great for what Zed wants to do; threaten the back-line. Dealing more damage to low health targets is great if you can get onto their carries and take them out of the fight, or out-duel an enemy squishy in a side-lane.

Maxing zedq.png (Q) on Zed is the best route, followed by zede.png (E), and zedw.png (W). Level up zedr.png (R) at levels 6,11, and 16. Our Q helps us farm early against ranged match-ups, our W helps us gap close and zone, and our E is for extra damage, or for a slow in combination with his W. Zed is a great champion, and his kit is very unique and has clear strengths and weaknesses.

231.png
Zed.png

231.png
zedpassive.png

PASSIVE: Contempt for the Weak.

Zed's basic attacks against targets below 50% Maximum HP deal a percent of the target's max health in bonus magic damage. Contempt for the Weak can only be used on the same target once before there is a cool-down placed on it proc'ing again.

Zed1.png

Zed's passive can deal a lot of damage. Knowing the right time to go in and use it can be crucial. Also, the fact the damage is Magic Damage means the enemy cannot itemize against it easily, since majority of your damage is Physical Damage.

231.png
zedq.png

Q-Ability: Razor Shuriken

Zed throws out a spinning shuriken, dealing physical damage to all targets it hits and goes through. However, the damage is reduced for each target by 60% after it goes through the first struck enemy.

Zed2.png

Zed's Q is a main source of his damage. Using his Q to farm and poke is ideal. In combination with your W and R, landing his Q's is very important for securing a kill on a target.

231.png
zedw.png

W-Ability: Living Shadow

Zed sends out a shadow (qualifies as a Dash) which can mimic his Q and E. If Zed lands a mimic'd ability on a target, Zed restores energy. His W lasts for 5 seconds, and travels 650 units forward. To take the W shadow, you must be within 1300 units.

Zed3.png

Zed's W is the basis for his combo's. Landing the mimic abilities and using his W for out-play potential is key to finding success with this champion. Make sure you note the cool-down's of your Q and E in relation to the length of his W. With enough CDR, you can use your Q and E more than once with the same W shadow.

231.png
zede.png

E-Ability: Shadow Slash

Zed and his Living Shadow (W) slash his blades in a small AoE. Enemies hit by the Living Shadow (W) E mimic, they are slowed for 1.5 seconds. Enemies hit by both the Living Shadow and Zed's E take no additional damage, by the slow is 50% stronger. Also, enemies hit by Zed's E reduce the cool-down of his W by 2 seconds.

Zed4.png

Zed's E is an important ability to land in combination with his Living Shadow (W). It can make it easier to hit his Q's when the target's are slowed. Also, having the cool-down of Living Shadow (W) be reduced by landing Shadow Slash (E) is good for out-play potential and mobility.

231.png
zedr.png

R-Ability: Death Mark

PASSIVE: Scoring a take-down with/while Death Mark is active grants Zed permanently non-stacking bonus physical damage.  He maintains the highest value his current bonus and his latest take-down.

ACTIVE: Zed becomes untargetable for 0.75 seconds while dashing behind his target, marking them upon arriving, and spawning a Shadow from the location he ulted from. This shadow lasts for 6 seconds, and has an initial lock-out of 0.5 seconds. Zed can recast R to appear back at this Shadow's position (Range doesn't matter for his R shadow). Additionally, for the next 3 seconds, the Mark stores a percentage of the damage dealt to the target (all magical and physical damage) detonating at the end of those 3 seconds.

Zed5.png

Zed's R is his most iconic ability. Huge out-play potential and it looks awesome when you time everything right. Zed's R is essential to use properly, and it's his primary assassination tool. Landing all your abilities while the Death Mark is active is crucial, otherwise you might not be able to assassinate the target you need to, and that could be costly.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Standard Start. Good damage early, and 3 pots is good to sustain early. It also helps us build into Ghostblade/Duskblade faster.
Defensive start; good against poke and lanes where you need the HP and sustain.
Mix of offensive and defensive start. 8 damage to start with is good, along with 80 HP and some lifesteal; but you cannot build it into Ghostblade/Duskblade like you can with the Long sword start.

Core Items

Standard Zed build. Lots of lethality and a little bit of tankiness.
Against more AD heavy comps where you don't need a lot of MR.
Good at split-pushing and dueling. Blade of the Ruined King allows you to cut through tanks and duel efficiently.
Last whisper added in place of Edge of Night. More of an ideal build against a lot of tanks.
Same concept as the other Last whisper build, except we build Mortal Reminder. Better against sustain tanks like Mao'kai.
Good against heavy CC comps where the QSS is needed.

Situational Items

Niche, but the tiamat active and sustain is good sometimes.
Niche, but the 20% lifesteal and shield can be helpful when dueling. In my experience, Blade of the Ruined King is usually better.
Niche, more of a "for fun item" but if RNG huge damage crit's is what you're after, IE will do the job.
Good for roaming around early/mid game.
Good vs AP threat(s) early on.
231.png
1036.png--> Good starting item. Offers us 10 AD, and the ability to take 3 health potions into lane. Normally we build this to start the game.

1054.png--> Doran's shield is good against poke lanes and lanes who can pressure you. HP, health regen, and a little bonus damage to minions.

1055.png--> Doran's blade is a good compromise between Long sword and Doran's shield. AD, HP, and a little bit of lifesteal is good for laning phase.

3155.png--> Sometimes a good buy against AP damage threats early on.

3142.png--> Ghostblade is a good first item for Zed. Lethality, damage, and CDR are good stats early on. It also offers out of combat move-speed which is good for roaming, and its active is good for chasing targets down or rotating around the map quicker.

3111.png--> Merc treads are great against CC and magic damage. The tenacity helps prevent you from getting locked down, and the magic resist is good against AP threats.

3047.png--> Ninja tabi is good against AD comps and AD threats. Reducing basic attack damage by 10% and giving us 30 armor is really good at handling and dueling AD champions.

3147.png--> Duskblade is a perfect fit for Zed. Lethality, Damage, and CDR (similiar to Ghostblade). However, its not usually best to rush first because it doesn't give out-of-combat move-speed like Ghostblade does. The passive's work well with Zed's play-style as well.

3071.png--> Good damage, tankiness, and cool-down reduction. The stats this item gives fit Zed perfectly, along with the passive which stacks armor shred, its good at helping you and your team do more damage to a target. Plus, the Phage passive is really nice on Zed to help you chase targets and secure kills.

3156.png--> MR, damage, and CDR. Along with these nice item stats, the passive MR shield is great against burst. Plus, the second passive (Lifegrip) is also nice, granting us 20 AD, and 10% life steal and spell-vamp upon the Lifeline passive activating (the MR shield).

3814.png--> More lethality, HP, and an active that helps us go all-in is great on Zed. The spell-shield is great for being able to quickly get in and get out without being punished for it by crowd control. Channeling and timing the spell-shield correctly is the tricky part.

3153.png--> Blade of the Ruined King is great for dueling and tank shredding. The damage and attack speed are mediocre for Zed, but the percent health damage is great at cutting through tanks. The active is also great for chasing down targets or running away from enemies.

3139.png--> Merc Scim is good against heavy crowd control comps. The active helps you get out of a sticky situation; and can offer out-play potential against certain champions.

3036.png--> Better against comps who stack health and do not have a ton of sustain in their kit. Good against tanks like Malphite and Sion.

3033.png--> Better aginst comps who are tanky and have a lot of built-in sustain. Good against champions like Warwick and Mao'kai.

VS

Ahri

Easy

Zed has lane control pre-6 so long as he can dodge her Q poke. At 6, it's more of a skill match-up, and who better uses their ultimate and can land their skill-shots.

VS

Akali

Medium

Akali's shroud makes it hard to all-in her post level 3. She can also build 3157.png, so keep track of that.

VS

Anivia

Hard

Anivia's passive makes her hard to all-in. Her crowd control can be hard to get around, and she can build 3157.png. Play smart.

VS

Annie

Medium

Annie has an easier time killing you then you do killing her. 1054.png is a good starting item against her; and 3155.png is a good buy for lane. Be careful at level 6.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy

Zed can gap-close and dodge his Q and R with his ultimate. Aurelion Sol can roam well though, so keep tabs on him.

VS

Azir

Medium

Azir has good lane control pre-6, and if he runs 3.png he can be hard to all-in. Level 6 is your chance to take control of the lane usually; just use your ult to dodge his.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Cassio has control pre-6. Her damage output can be hard to manage early on. Get 6, look to all-in. Be quick to dodge her ult. She can also build 3157.png.

VS

Corki

Medium

Ranged champions have an advantage against melee's; but Zed can gap-close and all-in. Level 6 is where you want to look to gain control, or potentially earlier then that if Corki positions incorrectly.

VS

Diana

Easy

Dodge her Q and this lane is yours.

VS

Ekko

Medium

Skill match-up. He has his R and he can build 3157.png to prevent your ult damage.

VS

Fizz

Medium

Skill match-up. Fizz might have an edge at level 6, and he can build 3157.png

VS

Galio

Medium

Galio gets pretty tanky; but he is better vs AP champs. Since your an AD champ, the kill potential is there early on. Be careful of his roam potential though.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Gangplank can zone you, but you have a lot of kill pressure with your gap-closers.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

Heim can itemize into 3157.png and has a lot of zoning control with his turrets. Not an easy match-up to get a snowball going in.

VS

Jayce

Hard

Jayce is a lane-bully with high damage output. His range form zones you off of CS, and his all-in potential is hard to get around. 3047.png is a good buy against him.

VS

Karthus

Easy

All-in and use your R shadow to get out of range of his passive. Karthus can build 3157.pngthough, so keep that in mind.

VS

Kassadin

Easy

You control the lane pre-6 usually, and you can all-in him if you time your abilities right and calculate his ulti movements. He can build 3157.png though.

VS

Katarina

Easy

VS

Kayle

Hard

VS

Kennen

Hard

VS

LeBlanc

Medium

Skill match-up.

VS

Lissandra

Hard

VS

Lux

Easy

VS

Malzahar

Hard

Malz can push the lane and deny your roams. His ult is also a great counter to your all-in potential. Plus, he can build 3157.png.

VS

Orianna

Medium

Ori has good zoning potential and her ult and E can counter all-ins. Plus, she can build 3157.png.

VS

Syndra

Medium

Skill match-up to an extent. Zed might have a slight advantage. Build 3155.png if needed and keep tabs on whether she builds 3157.png or not.

VS

Taliyah

Medium

Taliyah can pressure you early, but at level 6, you can all-in. She can build 3157.png, so keep tabs on whether she does or not.

VS

Talon

Medium

Skill match-up; however Zed has a slight edge. Play it smart.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

VS

Veigar

Easy

VS

Vel'Koz

Easy

VS

Viktor

Easy

VS

Vladimir

Hard

Vladimir's pool make its hard to all-in him. He can also build 3157.png. Consider buying 3155.png.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Skill match-up. Yasuo with 3.png will have the edge. Note his windwall cool-down, and consider what minions he might dash to.

VS

Zed

Medium

Skill match-up.

VS

Ziggs

Easy

VS

Zoe

Medium

Zoe has a lot of damage. In her current state on 7.23, she might do well against Zed. 3155.png is probably a good buy against her.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

231.png
1. Zed's Passive zedpassive.png will apply on-hit affects and can critically strike. However, it does NOT affect structures.

2. Zed's passive zedpassive.png can be blocked by things like Jax's E, and can be negated by things like Teemo blind. It can also be consumed by things like Pantheon W.

3. Zed's W zedw.png grants vision and is untargetable. It will also stop if it collides with something like Yasuo's Windwall or Braum's Unbreakable.

4. Zed's E zede.png has no cast time.

5. Zed's R zedr.png can be prevented by an enemy becoming Invulnerable before the Mark is applied, or by becoming invulnerable before the Mark detonates.

6. Zed's R zedr.png will leave a swirling shuriken above the target's head if the Death Mark detonate will kill them.

7. Zed's R zedr.png can be blocked by spell-shield, and the Mark application won't apply, and Zed's R dash will be denied, as will his invulnerability. It will NOT block the Mark from detonating if it's already applied.

8. Use your E zede.png on an enemy target when your W zedw.png is down to reduce it's cool-down.

9. Zed's basic harass combo is zedw.png->zede.png->zedq.png->zedw.png->zedpassive.png. You start of with his first cast of W, combine it with his E to land the slow, then land a double Q on the slowed target. You then can cast the W a second time to swap to the shadow and auto attack if their in range. You may also be able to E again if the cool-down is back up.

10. Take note of any items that can deny your zedr.png Death Mark detonation or your ult in some way. Such as; 3157.png3814.png, Stop-watch, Invulnerability abilities, etc.

Playing as Zed Back to Top

231.png
Playing as Zed has 3 different parts to master; playing the Early Game, playing the Mid Game, and playing the Late Game.

179.png
EARLY GAME: Zed has a dominate early game with a lot of snowball potential. Understanding your basic combo's and what your all-in situations can look like it key to having a good early game. Zed can also roam really well pre-6 and post-6. Here are a few questions you should try to answer when playing Zed in the early game:
  1. How much kill threat do I have against my laner?
  2. Have they built stop-watch, or do they already have a stop-watch from their runes?
  3. Where is their jungler? where did he start? what time do I expect him to show mid?
  4. Who is better at level 6, me or them?
  5. What lane is the easiest to roam to? who has the best gank setup?
  6. How should I start to itemize for the mid-game?
  7. How is my CS in comparison to my laners?
  8. Where is my jungler at? is he invading? should I follow and help him out if so?
Answering these questions can help you be more proactive in the early game, and help you secure a lead. Be thinking about what ways I can best setup myself and my team for success when mid-game rolls around.

179.png
MID GAME: Zed's mid-game is on-par or better than his early game. Zed has a lot of side-lane power, and he can 1v1 a lot of champions if he isn't super behind, and the enemies aren't super ahead. Split-pushing is normally the route to go mid-game. Trying to create pressure for your team while they do work elsewhere on the map is usually ideal. Zed also gets more time to ramp up for late-game. Here are a few questions to ask during mid-game when playing Zed:
  1. Who can I 1v1? who can't I 1v1?
  2. Where should I place my wards at? where is our current vision line?
  3. Do I have oracles lens to help myself get picks in side-lanes?
  4. Have I bought control wards constantly to keep my split-push as safe as I can?
  5. If the enemy team is MIA on the map, are they coming bot? what do they lose from coming bot to stop my push?
  6. What is our side-lane control like? do we have waves in ideal spots, or should we go push them out?
  7. What outer towers need to be taken down still? should I go push that lane and try to get the tower?
  8. What objectives are spawning? do we have vision around it? have we cleared out their vision?
  9. Who has summoner spells up?
  10. Who is fed? who isn't?
  11. How should I start to itemize for late game?
Answering these questions can help you have a more successful mid-game, and set you up for success once late-game rolls around.

179.png
LATE GAME: Zed's late-game is superb. He has a ton of damage and mobility, and can basically outduel anyone if played correctly. Normally, setting up picks around objectives and split-pushing are acceptable at this point in the game. Just be weary of your team getting caught out 4v5 and losing the game off of that. Here are a few questions to consider when playing Zed in the late-game:
  1. What major objectives are spawning soon? do we have vision on them? have we swept out enemy vision?
  2. Who can I 1v1? who can't I 1v1?
  3. What summoner spells are up for the enemy team?
  4. How fed are their carries? which one of them can I take out quickly?
  5. Who has items that counter my ult?
  6. Have I itemized correctly? what items should I buy instead if not?
  7. What enemy outer towers are still standing?
  8. What is our side-lane control like? are waves pushing for us? or against us?
  9. How should we play the next team-fight?
  10. What items do they have to prevent me from killing one of their carries?
Answering these questions can help you have a better late game on Zed. Of course, many other factors go into it, but these are just a few questions to consider.

About Me Back to Top

179.png
I began playing league around the start of season 4 and picked up Yasuo around March of that year, and have remained a dedicated main since then (My favorite skin is High-noon, and I like all of the chroma's). After a few months of dedicated playing, my main account hit platinum 2 in season 5 and my smurf had reached diamond. Following that, in season 6 I was able to cruise into Diamond smoothly on my main account and currently in season 7 (as you probably saw by my lolking link). I ended season 7 in Diamond 5 sadly because I didn't have a lot of time to grind out games, and because I was simply not good enough to climb to where I wanted to be. I did however peak Diamond 3, 100 LP (D2 promos), so while I'm not yet where I want to be, I know I can do it in the future.
