Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png This is always mandatory for 99% of champions.
3.png I usually take this in most of my games simply for the fact that you are meant deny the enemy any chance of killing a teammate or escaping.
14.png Take this if you're against an enemy that relies on healing a lot and your team doesn't have a way to stop it or you don't need to worry about denying any assassins with exhaust.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

This is the main setup for this Zilean build as it allows you to keep doing what you're best at doing, which is to be as annoying to the enemy team as possible.

If you are against a lane that you know you will die easily to, you should move the points around in the resole tree to:

T1 - Unyielding
T2 - Tough Skin
T4 - Perseverance

These will make it so you can handle the tougher lanes without having to head to base as often, keep in mind you will lose some of your mobility that you gain from T2 - Explorer and T4 - Insight which affects how often you can use flash/exhaust.

The reason why I only leave 1 point in Q is because this Zilean build is meant to be full utility, not damage.

Your main focus is your E, this allows you to speed up your teammates and slow down your enemies by large amounts for 2.5 seconds.

W allows you to make sure you can keep using your abilities for locking down an enemy or two or keeping your teammates safe from any danger.

Your R is what makes Zilean annoying to the fullest extent. You can turn team fights around with this one ability on the right target.

New Passive:

Zilean has been given a new passive that works similarly to the old one except you can choose when to use it.

It holds experience until you can level up a nearby teammate. (For example your teammate has 100 xp left to level and you hit 100 xp in the passive, you can click on them to fill out the remaining xp).

It is best used when your ADC is at lvl 5/10/15/17 for that quick level up to keep your ADC ahead.

If you and your ADC are behind, feel free to use it as a catch-up tool so you don't fall too far behind.

Keep in mind that you have to right click your teammate in order to give them the experience boost, but you won't be able to do it if they are fighting other champions. It is also a channeling ability, so let your teammate know to stand still so you can give them the experience.

The passive also has a 120 second cooldown, so remember to save it until you think it will make the most impact.

The passive will also not start taking in experience until 1:30 when minions begin to spawn.

If you are level 18 and you still have teammates who are not 18, your passive will give them double the experience (the normal xp saved up + the xp you would have gotten if you were not 18).

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Coin gives much more gold in the long run and your job isn't to damage the enemy, just to make sure your adc is safe and the enemy can't get away
Alternative start, gives 70 less hp compared to pots with the secret stash mastery but will refill every time you visit base which becomes much cheaper throughout the game with the hp pots costing 50 gold now. And you can upgrade it later on.
The new active on frost queen's makes this an appealing start.

Core Items

You should aim for sightstone ASAP for vision to help you and your team deny the enemy jungler from ganks and to catch anyone out of position. Get medallion if you have enough gold after sightstone, or as soon as you can after sightstone for more gold. Grab a pink ward and some pots if you have spare change.
You can choose to either get Talisman or Eye. I prefer talisman for the speed boost. However Eye combined sightstone and medallion giving you more room for another item.
I recommend these boots over any other because you want that reliable movespeed to keep up with the enemy you are holding down and unlike mobo boots, you won't slow down if you're hit.
Upgrade your refillable potion sometime after medallion and sightstone so you can regen mana along with hp. Corruption potion gives more hp/mp overall and adds in the extra damage from the corruption buff but only has 3 charges. Hunters give less overall hp/mp but has 5 charges for small bits of health here and there.
The active on this item is extremely powerful. While talisman can speed you and nearby allies up, this auto targets the 2 nearest enemy champs to slow down when you use it. Making it great for peeling and chasing.

Situational Items

Getting mikael's is useful vs hard CC. It allows you to keep your team safe if they get caught. The heal is also useful to save someone from an ignite.
Banshee's is very useful if the enemy team is looking to pick someone off before a team fight. It is also your go to item if you need MR.
Zeke's can be a powerful item for any of your carries. It offers a good spike and will activate quickly because you are able to spam your abilities.
This is a great item if you need to stop an enemy from healing up during a fight and no one else is able to stop their healing. The AP is also nice as it gives more health return on your ultimate.
Always grab an aegis if the enemy team has 2 AP champions or a lot of AoE AP damage. You can decide to upgrade this to Locket if you need more protection from AoE or Banner if you want a lane to snowball slowly to force objectives.
These are good defensive health items. Warmogs for burst, Rylais if you want your bombs to slow people, Randuins if the enemy has a lot of crit champions, Deadmans if the enemy has a lot of AD champions. Frozen heart for when the enemy team has a lot of auto attack champions.
This item is good to help siege towers when your team is doing a split push strat, also has good defenses.
Righteous glory can be picked up to help your team engage when talisman is down.

Aside from the core items, everything is up to you to figure out what your team needs.

This build is a utility bot, so you do not need to prioritize AP.

What you do need to prioritize is CDR, you want to reach 45% quickly so you can keep your abilities rolling.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

He can't outrun you if you cycle through your spells properly, your team should be able to take him out easily even after he uses Q.

If he has his passive up, throw down a bomb and get your stun ready when he is about to revive.

During Teamfights:

He will most likely try to engage with his Q knockup on any squishy target, so watch for where he's headed and try to time your speed boost on you or your team to outrun his knockup.

VS

Ahri

Medium

Her dashes make it difficult to pin her down, but if you can get a slow off on her and predict where she will dash, you can land your stun and have your team clean up.

Beware of her charm, it usually means instant death for you.

During Teamfights:

She will try to dash around your front line in order to pick off one of your backline carries, knowing which carry she will try to charm is important so you can speed them up and outrun the charm.

VS

Akali

Hard

Her dashes can be difficult to manage, and her shroud makes it more difficult to pin her down.

Get your upgraded sweeper or a pink ward to deny her invisibility.

Beware, she can use you as a reset because you are squishy.

During Teamfights:

She will always wait for any CC to be used so she can pick off the low hp targets and get resets. If there are no other high priority targets to lock down, get your 2043.png or 3364.png ready so you can see her in her shroud, then lock her down.

VS

Alistar

Medium

Easy to medium depending on the Alistar's skill.

Don't bother harassing him in lane after level 3 because he will heal himself and his ADC.

If you see him walk up to you, be prepared to slow him down and get out of range of his W-Q combo.

During Teamfights:

Deny him any movement so that he can't get to your back line.

He will try to engage, so again, keep your distance and slow him down if you see him running at your team.

Beware of his 4.png+Q combo.

VS

Amumu

Medium

His Q-R initiation is powerful and can sometimes mean certain death to anyone caught in it.

If he misses his bandage toss and continues to chase, slow him down and get away.

During Teamfights:

After his ult is used, he will try to stay in the middle of your team and keep bandaging people, as soon as he ults just stun him and speed your team out of his range.

Beware of his 4.png+R combo.

VS

Anivia

Easy

She has no escapes, only a slow moving stun and a wall.

If you bait out her stun, you can slow her down and stun her long enough for your team to kill her.

If she is in egg form and your team is on their way, plant a bomb and get ready to stun her when she revives.

During Teamfights:

She will deal a lot of AoE damage, as well as look to stun people and split the team up with her wall. If you can manage to land your stun on her when her ult is up, you will interrupt it.

VS

Annie

Hard

She is difficult to handle with her AoE stun.

Every 4th spell she uses will prepare her stun to use on your team, her 4.png+tibbers is a strong initiation.

If she doesn't have her stun ready, you can try to lock her down and stun her before she can get it off. But beware of her damage.

During Teamfights:

Avoid being close to your teammates so that you won't get caught in her stun.

After her initial combo, she will use tibbers to keep chasing people and dealing damage.

Try to land your stun on her if she tries to engage on your team to deny her any more damage output.

VS

Ashe

Easy

Her poke can be annoying in lane, but it is easy for you to set up ganks with your full combo.

Beware of her R as she can initiate quicker than you can.

During Lane:

Her volley is long range and can slow you down if you're hit by it, wait for her to use it before going in, or you can try to bait it out.

You can harass her a bit here and there if she doesn't have a support with heals.

If she uses her ult, their jungler is most likely coming for a gank so be prepared to disengage.

During Teamfights:

She will spend most of the fight in the back trying to pick off anyone she can.

If she is closer to your team than the enemy tanks are, CC her immediately so your team can kill her off before her team can react.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Hard

His passive makes it difficult to get near him without being hit, even moreso with 3116.png + aurelionsolW.png. You should only take the risk to lock him down if your team is close by and you know he won't kill you right away. His aurelionsolR.png does a decent amount of damage and can be surprising for everyone.

VS

Azir

Easy

Dodge his soldiers and lock him down, he has no knockup anymore and no real way of keeping you off him without using his ult.

Even if he ults you, you are still in range to slow him down enough to land your stun.

During Teamfights:

He will spend most of the fight in the back, so you won't be able to get to him.

If he tries to initiate for his team by dashing in and ulting your team back, you can slow him as he is dashing and speed your team up so they don't get pushed back.

VS

Bard

Hard

Very annoying Auto attack poke. His Q and R can be strong initiators for enemy ganks.

During Lane:

Keep your distance from him if he has meeps to auto you with.

Wait for him to leave lane to ward or pick up chimes to initiate on the enemy ADC.

The health packs he drops can give a small heal and a speed boost, but they will heal for much more after 10 seconds, keep that in mind.

Do not stay near minions or your ADC to avoid getting stunned.

He needs to hit 2 targets or 1 target and a wall in order to stun.

During Teamfights:

His job is similar to yours, but you can speed your team up to avoid his Q stun and deny an initiation.

If you see him trying to ult your team, immediately boost your team so they can outrun it.

VS

Blitzcrank

Medium

His Q is game changing. If you get pulled by him early on, it won't mean instant death but you may need to burn a flash to get out.

If he misses his Q and continues to chase, slow him down and have your ADC punish him.

During Lane:

During Teamfights:

He will try to initiate with his hook, keep an eye on him as he will try to rush up and pull someone from your team.

VS

Brand

Easy

He has no escapes and his stun is a skillshot. Dodge the stun and you can lock him down.

Beware of his damage, he can easily delete you if he has a few items.

During Teamfights:

He deals a lot of AoE damage and will try to unload his full combo into your team, make sure to boost everyone so they can avoid his abilities and spread out for his ult.

VS

Braum

Easy

Annoyingly tanky, is no real threat to you as long as you aren't in melee range of him.

His ult is a strong initiation, but can't kill anyone by himself unless they are very low.

Slow him down if he lands a Q on you or your ADC and get away from him.

During Teamfights:

He will try to get his passive on as many people as possible.

If you see someone get caught by his passive and you think they're gonna die, ult them quickly.

VS

Caitlyn

Medium

Long range poke, can be difficult to deal with early on.

If she is caught alone, you can easily lock her down and deny her escape while your team finishes her off.

Beware of her traps on the ground, she can easily take a large amount of hp from you if she is in range.

VS

Cassiopeia

Easy

Can easily kill you if you're not careful. She has no escape so you can lock her down easily.

Beware of her ult, it will stun you if you are facing her, but will slow you if you are facing away from her.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Can be extremely tanky and put out a lot of damage.

He has no escape so you can lock him down.

Watch out for his rupture and his silence, they will prevent you from casting any spells.

VS

Corki

Easy

His W is his only escape, if he uses it to initiate, you can lock him down and stun him.

Try to bait out his W if you are setting up for a jungle gank.

VS

Darius

Medium

Easy to medium, depends on the Darius player.

Can be easily kited with your E.

If he pulls you in, try to slow him down and speed yourself up and out of his range before he can ult you.

VS

Diana

Easy

No escapes, high damage.

Be careful of her Q and R damage.

You can easily lock her down.

VS

Draven

Hard

Hard hitting and difficult to lock down without getting punished for it.

If he has no spinning axes. it is much safer to try to lock him down.

VS

Ekko

Hard

Very slippery champion, has multiple ways of evading you and your teammates.

Do not sit in his shield bubble or you will get stunned and probably die.

Always try to be just outside of it if you need to slow him down.

VS

Elise

Medium

Her human form E cocoon can lock you up for 3 seconds, avoid it at all costs.

Her spider form E is her escape if there is something she can repel on to.

Bait her escape by slowing her down, when she comes back down, throw a bomb on her and slow her down again and finish with your stun.

VS

Evelynn

Medium

Can remove your slow with her speed boost fairly often. You can slow her down more often than she can speed up.

VS

Ezreal

Easy

His E makes it difficult to keep up with him.

If you see him use his E, he won't have an escape for a little while, use this time to lock him down if you are looking for a kill.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

Has a fear, silence, and a drain that heals him.

No need to slow him down if he is draining you because he needs to stand still, throw bombs on him and stun him or speed yourself up and get out of range.

Beware of his 3 second fear.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Can escape and chase with her Q dash.

Try to bait out her W Riposte with your slows so that she doesn't deny your stun.

VS

Fizz

Hard

Very difficult to pin down. His low CD E makes him invulnerable and untargetable.

Bait out his E with your slow, try to predict where he will land and drop a bomb, rewind, slow and bomb again.

VS

Galio

Medium

His ultimate is a strong CC ability but you can interrupt it with well placed bombs.

Avoid getting caught or you suffer potential death.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

His W oranges removes any CC on him and heals him.

Bait out his W with your slow and then slow him down again into a stun.

Watch out for his barrels, if you time your auto attack, you can deny him an explosion.

VS

Garen

Easy

His Q will remove any slows on him and it has a fairly low CD.

Once you're closer to 40% CDR, you can keep him locked down easily.

VS

Gnar

Medium

In mini gnar form, he can jump out of your range or into your range to initiate.

In mega gnar form, his jump is shorter but he has an AoE stun that he can use on your team.

If he tries to initiate on to your team, try to speed everyone out of his range then lock him down.

VS

Gragas

Hard

He can split your team apart and isolate them.

Slows won't matter on him if he has his E dash up.

Try to keep your team out of his range.

VS

Graves

Medium

Short range dash.

Even if he dashes away from you, your slow can keep him in range.

Beware of his burst as the game goes on.

VS

Hecarim

Medium

His ultimate is a strong initiation.

His itemization allows him to move very fast and deal a good amount of damage, but your E can lower both of those. He relies on movespeed to do more damage and you take that away.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

Medium to hard

Heimer relies on his turrets to do damage, he will most likely stay within his turrets if you try to chase him.

If he's alone with no turrets, you can lock him down for your team.

Beware of his E stun, if it lands you might die.

VS

Irelia

Easy

If she uses her Q dash on you, you can easily slow her down and lock her down for a while.

Beware, she can use minions to reset the cooldown on her Q to catch up to you.

VS

Janna

Medium

She can become very fast and has ways of keeping you away from her and her teammates.

She can also heal up her team.

If she has no ult up, you can dodge her tornado and keep her locked down.

VS

Jarvan IV

Hard

His E Q combo is on a fairly low cooldown, he can escape your range over walls or even initiate on to you.

If you slow him just before he E-Qs away from you, you can still catch him if your talisman is available.

VS

Jax

Hard

Don't let him get in range of you, he has his own AoE stun and a gap closing Q to stick to you.

His low CD Q can make it difficult to keep him locked down for very long if he has wards or minions to jump on.

VS

Jayce

Medium

Long range poke can be painful.

He has a knockback that doesn't put much distance between you and him so you can keep slowing him down.

If he changes to hammer form, you can lock him down easier before he can hit you.

VS

Jhin

Medium

He has a lot of damage mid to late game that can 1-2 shot you if you're not careful.

You can trigger his jhinE.png, but make sure to use timewarp.png on yourself so you can keep moving fast or else he will land his jhinW.png and snare you.

When he uses jhinR.png, speed up whoever you think he is targeting so they can dodge the shots. If he manages to land one of his shots, the target will be slowed. Body block the shots if you think your teammate will die and you don't have chronoshift.png up.

VS

Kalista

Medium

Can be annoying with her constant hopping and poke.

Once you slow her, she can't get away as she has no escapes.

VS

Karma

Hard

Very strong poke in lane. Can kill you if you're not careful.

Even if she has her W snare on you, she can't get out of your range if you slow her first.

VS

Karthus

Easy

He has no escape, and a wall that slows and lowers your MR.

You can lock him down easily, just avoid standing in his E defile.

VS

Kassadin

Medium

The low cooldown on his R lets him jump very often, but it gets more expensive the more he does it in a short time.

Wait for him to ult once before you slow him, or if he is low on mana, force him to use it up trying to escape.

VS

Katarina

Medium

Very dangerous in melee range, you need to stun her immediately if she jumps on your team.

Beware she can instantly jump around the team if she gets resets from kills or assists.

If caught alone, she can be locked down fairly easily.

VS

Kayle

Easy

She has no escape, only an invulnerability shield that isn't immune to CC.

Easy to lock down.

VS

Kennen

Easy

Avoid his Q poke and slow him down before you try to plant a bomb on him.

If he uses his E speed boost during your slow, he won't cover much ground and will allow you to keep the lockdown going.

When he ults, he will charge your team. Slow him down immediately and back off until his ult wears off.

VS

Kha'Zix

Hard

His E evoled leap makes it difficult to pin him down, and it will reset if he gets a kill or an assist.

If he E's into your team, immediately slow him and try to stun him. If no one on your team died, keep him locked down.

VS

Kog'Maw

Easy

No escapes.

Lock him down until he dies then speed boost away from his passive.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

Her jumps make it hard to lock her down.

She covers a lot of distance in a short time, you won't be able to keep her still unless you wait for her to use both her jumps.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

Lee can be tricky to pin down as he can jump to wards and ally champs or Q enemies and dash to them.

It's best to slow him when he's close to force him to ward hop then follow him if you can and lock him down.

VS

Leona

Hard

Leona enjoys being close in, so you'll need to make sure your ADC can outrun her or if you can stun her before she stuns your ADC that can help a lot.

When she looks to go in, try to move somewhere behind your ADC so you can just throw bombs on top of them when leona goes in.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

She can use her E to do a short range teleport and escape your range. But if you manage to stun her before she teleports, she will lose her only escape.

Careful of her ultimate if she uses it on your team because they can easily die if her team follows up.

If she ults herself, get ready to slow and stun her. If she has hourglass, wait for her to use it before you try to stun her.

VS

Lucian

Medium

His E dash can remove your slow, but it's cooldown is much longer than your E-W-E combo. Make sure he dashes before you slow him down again.

Your bombs can interrupt his ultimate if you stun him.

VS

Lulu

Medium

A lot of CC in such a tiny package.

She can slow you almost as much as you can slow her, but your slow lasts longer.

Beware of her E-Q combo for the long range slows.

VS

Lux

Easy

No escape, high burst.

Avoid her binding as it can mean instant death if you get caught.

If she misses her binding, you can lock her down pretty easily.

VS

Malphite

Easy

His ult is his only escape, but it is also a strong initiation.

He can Q you to slow you down but if he is in range for that, you are in range to slow him down and keep him locked down.

VS

Zilean as a support Back to Top

I feel Zilean is a great utility support. Better than if he were an AP support. Reason is, his control over a single champion is ridiculous and can single handedly turn a fight around.

Your job is to make sure your team is safe and that they can take out the target you are locking down.

Lockdown Method Back to Top

In order to properly lock down an enemy and keep them down as much as possible, you need to be able to stay in range of the enemy. This means that they will target you eventually and you can possibly die.

E -> Q -> W -> Q -> E

This is your combo to quickly CC someone for 6.5 seconds solid at max level.

You can continue to use W to keep refreshing your abilities, but do keep in mind there will be a 1.5 second gap between your CC and that gives some opponents enough time to escape, so try to play it smart and understand where the enemy will go.

Early/Mid/Late Game Back to Top

Early Game

At level 1, with your bomb you will provide zone control. You don't have to land it on top of the enemy, you just have to make sure it lands in a spot that prevents the enemy from coming in to last hit minions. The radius is large so you can cover a decent amount. Don't spam it very often, but just enough to deny the enemy ADC from being able to last hit minions and they die before he can get to them.

Once you hit level 3, you can start setting up ganks by slowing down the enemy and using your Q-W-Q combo on them to stun them in place and have your next slow ready.

Once you hit level 6 you can bait people into thinking they will kill you or your ADC and then use your ult just before someone dies and turn the fight around.

Your laning phase is mostly passive aside from trying to deny the enemy from CSing, you want the enemy to make a move so you can counter their actions. Keep in mind that you are extremely squishy and it is easy to die if you are not careful, so choose your actions carefully.

Mid Game

By mid game you should have your 2049.png3096.png, and 1001.png at least. Which will allow you to ward up the river and jungles to help your team know where the enemy is. Always make sure your wards are somewhere on the map.

You should also have 4 points in your E slow, which will mean that if you and your team manage to get in range, you can single out an enemy and kill them or at the very least burn their flash.

Once you hit 45% CDR, you're ready to start roaming all over and helping your team pick off enemies who are alone.

During team fights, your main goal is to keep your team safe. Aside from that, you want to make sure you can lock down an enemy in order to peel or just keep the enemy occupied long enough for your team to kill them.

Late Game

Late game is where every death matters the most. If you and your team can single out an enemy champion and kill them, you can easily force a fight and win.

If you can manage to save any teammate during the fight, you can turn that fight around as long as the rest of your team isn't in danger of dying or dead.

Baiting the enemy Back to Top

Zilean can easily bait enemies to burn their abilities on him only for him to revive. Doing this can also turn a fight around because the enemy will have some cooldowns that are not up when the fighting starts.

With enough practice, you can single handedly stall the enemy long enough for your team to show up and kill them, but it is extremely risky to do and can cost you a lot if you fail.

Do not be afraid to ult yourself if you know your team will be fine or you won't reach them in time. I've had several games where I ulted myself during a fight and the enemies burned so much on me that my team was able to win the fight. Other times after I revived, I helped my team catch someone who may have died earlier and tried to join in on the fight.
