Summoner Spells Back to Top

The standard summoner spells are Flash 4.png and Exhaust 3.png to take as Support. Flash 4.png is meant for escape or aggressive initiation (which is difficult and risky, especially landing double bombs). Exhaust 3.png is commonly used defensively to slow and reduce the enemy champion's damage output. Ignite 14.png is used for a more aggressive play style in lane specially against sustain champions such as Sona 37.png or Soraka 16.png
I personally take Flash and Exhaust in most of my games as support.

Masteries Back to Top

This is my typical mastery for support Zilean. I take Thunderlord keystone and additional 5% CDR under cunning (18 points). I took 12 points under resolve. I either switch with perseverance and Insight. However, I currently use Perseverance to survive longer in lane.

I start with Q, W and E on my first 3 levels. This will allow me to maximize my spells to securely land my Q. Whenever safe to do it, I slow (E) the enemy champion first and then Q W Q. It is more likely to land Qs this way. However, it helps to be fully aware and familiar of the range of his Q. It takes a LOT of practice to get used to the range until it becomes second nature. Leveling up QWE on the first 3 levels helps during enemy ganks to reposition self or ally away quickly.

I max Q first. This is the main source of damage and harass during laning phase and team fights. It takes quick reaction time to cast Q quickly to stun. It has a decent area of effect range that is good during teamfights and clearing waves. The AP ratio on the Q is 90%. It is worth building AP to increase damage. This spell is easy to dodge and can be frustrating at first. I "smartcast" this ability always. However, keybindings are always depending on the player's comfort level.

I max W second. It allows me to cast my combo quickly Q W Q. It reduced the Coodlwon of Q and E for 10 seconds.

I max E last. The speed and slow it provides are good during escape, initiation and lockdown. However, 1 level in the early levels is already satisfactory. E W E combo is good to moving allies quickly on the map or slowing enemies to their disbelief.

His ultimate ability is very game changing. You need very quick reaction time, good judgment of the situation, and correct positioning to maximize the potential. Casting the ult on the right ally definitely changes the tides of the game. During late game, death timers are very long. Saving an ally on that late game team fight can secure victory. I always level it up whenever possible. The AP ratio is 200%. Therefore, AP is very good in this ability. This spell only has a 5 second duration. It can be countered easily by the enemy by ignoring the ulted ally for that duration. Positioning needs to good when casting the ult. This ability is casted usually during teamfights. You need to always watch yourself when moving close to range to ult. The enemy champion tends to CC or kill you first in sight and will force you to use the ult to yourself. During teamfights, I always look at my champion and my target ally. You have a lot of stuff to process at the same time during the teamfight. However, try your best to land your ult before you die. This ultimate ability can carry the whole game when timed right.  The W spell does not reduce the Cooldown of your ultimate. With 45% CDR, the cooldown is 33 seconds on level 16.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

TYPICAL STARTING ITEM FOR GOLD ACCUMULATION, ADDITIONAL ON HIT DAMAGE, AND AP. 3 POTIONS OR BISCUITS FOR SUSTAIN. WARDING TRINKET FOR BASIC WARDING.
FIRST BACK: EITHER ITEMS. I BUY TEAR TO EXPAND MY MANA POOL. IT HELPS WITH CONSTANT HARASS IN LANE OR TEAMFIGHTS.
FOR CDR ON ABILITIES AND SUMMONER SPELLS.
Buy one always when going back to purchase if you can afford.
switch to lens when sighstone is purchased.

Core Items

    My typical final build

Situational Items

2 REVIVES OP. LOL. When focused usually. I prefer to buy AP health items first before buying this.
3 OR MORE AP Carries on enemy team. Switch with morellonomicon.
3 or more AD Carry ranged or melee. Switch with morellonomicon.
When needing more AP damage. You can replace rylai with this.

SEQUENCE OF ITEM PURCHASE (COMMON)

  1.  Spell thief + 3 Pots + yellow trinket
  2.  First Back: Tear (if not ganked a lot or confidence of staying safe in lane). Otherwise, sightstone or buy frost fang.  I always buy vision ward everytime I go back if I can afford it.
  3. Second back: If tear, sighstone and frostfang are already purchased, upgrade to eye of watchers. It gives bonus 200 health. You can go Frost Queen's Claim depending on playstyle. However, I preferred saving 1 slot and additional health. I upgrade my boots to Ionian.
  4. Third Back: Purchase codex first then build Morello/ Athene based on the enemy composition.
  5. At this Point, I already have 45% CDR from boots Ionian (10%) + Eye of watchers (10%) + Morellonomicon (20%) + 5% from masteries. I also have a decent mana pool or regeneration to spam abilities effectively.
  6. I buy Catalyst then build into Rod of Ages. I know that it is already mid game. However, AP health item choices are limited and this is the best to build first in my opinion.
  7. Giant belt to Rylai scepter. I bought this for the bonus health and 100 AP. The passive is not that great on zilean. However, the stats alone are excellent for damage and survival. You can trade it with Rabadon if you find Rylai unnecessary and you already have enough to survive or you have excellent positioning skills.
  8. Upgrade Tear to Archangel staff. This might raise eyebrows. However, I value reliable health first that the active. When you purchase this, it is highly likely that it is fully stacked and it will turn to seraph's embrace that grants a shield on your self based on the mana you have.
