Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png: Mandatory on all match ups.  Zyra's greatest weakness is her lack of mobility and escapes.
14.png: Solid pick for all matchups.

21.png: With the popularity of damage junglers and assassin mid lane at an all time high barrier can help you make it to mid/late game team fights where Zyra shines.

12.png: Viable in very passive lanes, but Zyra's lack of mobility will often result in the enemy easily escaping a teleport gank.  Zyra is great at securing kills in lane and teleport does not benefit this.

If you are not invading nor in fear of early ganks it is beneficial to delay putting a point in your E until lvl 4.  Earlier ranks in Q will increase your poke potential in lane.  Always pick up W at lvl 2 so that seed generation can begin as soon as possible.

Harass should be: Q+W.  Your spawned plant will hopefully get in 1-2 auto attacks providing extra poke.

Always try to keep 1 seed up when harassing.  Once you have two seeds stored poke with Q+W.  This way you always have a seed up for unexpected ganks or kills after landing snares.

Going for a Kill: E+W+R+Q+W+Ignite.  Casting R in between E and Q will still buff both your plants and has a higher chance of catching them in the knock up before they can escape from your snare.

Things to not build

3026_32.png: When you resurrect you have no mobility to escape or heal and your ult is on cooldown.  Better to build damage and take the enemy down with you.
3001_32.png: Banshee veil is a much better choice in all situations

VS

Ahri

Hard

Zyra has more burst and more sustain damage than Ahri. However Ahri's mobility with her ult allows her to maneuver away from your plants and spells. You need to play defensive in this match-up and farm well. If you attempt to be aggressive vs Ahri you will likely miss spells at a distance and have nothing ready when she comes in close range for the kill on you. Ahri will have the opportunity to roam, so be sure to always have both sides of your lane warded and promptly call MIA followed by pings where you suspect she is heading. If she does leave lane, pushing is usually the correct choice. If you attempt to follow without good vision she will likely double back and kill you in the jungle/river.

VS

Akali

Hard

Suggested 21/9/0 Masteries

In all Akali match-ups it pays to have a pink ward in lane or ready to place down if a kill opportunity presents its self. Pre-6 this lane is yours. Harass with Q+W and keep her running. Never allow her to activate her Q by auto attacking you. If you aren't afraid of ganks push and force her to farm at tower. When Akali hits 6 back up. If she hits 6 before you, let her zone you until you also reach 6. From here on out you must play very defensive. If you waste spells at a distance she will quickly close the gap and finish you off. Farm until she attempts to kill you. If she goes in for a kill quickly land an E+W+R+Q+W+Ignite. If you have a pink ward be sure to place it now so that your plants can continue attacking her. There is a good chance you will both die in this situation. Bringing barrier instead of ignite works in this match-up. The extra time granted by your barrier is extra auto attacks your plants will get in on Akali when she goes for a kill. Some Akalis also like to roam a lot. Try not to follow akali when she roams unless you have good vision or she will simply double back and kill you in river/jungle. Try to keep wards on both sides of the river and a pink in lane. Make a point to your jungle that you have the lane pink warded so a gank would likely be successful.

VS

Anivia

Easy

This is a farm lame with the exception that you have a bit of kill potential on Anivia while she has virtually none on you. You should be able to safely cast E+W while leaving your self plenty of room to dodge her Q (ice ball that stuns). If you land an E+W, follow it up with a Q+W. If she misses her Q then you can go in for a kill with your ult+ignite. If you are unable to get damage on her, don't force it. Just clear waves, farm wraiths, wait for ganks, and roam if you see a good opportunity to. If you get greedy for a kill in lane she can potentially one shot you with Q+R+E+Ignite. Use her short range to your advantage. Don't be baited by eggs under towers.

VS

Brand

Medium

Brand match-up is very similar to Veigar all though his kit is quite different. Your goal vs brand is to keep at max range while poking with Q+W. Landing and E+W followed by ult can secure a kill, however Brand has very high burst damage in lane. Additionally if you get caught by a stun trying to poke you will likely die. I would suggest playing safe, farming, and waiting for ganks or roam oppurtunities.

VS

Cassiopeia

Easy

Cassi has about even poke with Zyra as well as even range.  However Zyra should win every 1v1 encounter post 6.  Cassi can only win a 1v1 engagement if she lands a stun on you with her ult.  Because of its short range this shouldn't happen.  Be careful not to face check into her and use Q+W to poke.  If you land an E you can easily finish her off with ult + plant damage.  Be sure not to miss a snare or she can use her fast movement speed to get close and spam spells on you before you can escape.  Keep your distance and the matchup should go in your favor.

VS

Diana

Hard

Plays out very similar to Akali match-up (see akali match-up). Diana has slightly less damage but is a bit tanker due to her W shield than akali.

VS

Evelynn

Easy

Evelyn is an extremely short ranged AP carry with Less burst than Zyra.  Poke her from a range so she can't force a 1v1 with full health.  It should be very easy to force her out of lane pre 6 with your poke and gain a lead.  If she is able to engage on you with full health, land your snare, combo her, and create distance while she dies to your plants/ignite.  Likely she will not try to 1v1 and will roam.  Try to put a pink ward near her turret to see when she exits the lane to top or bottom and announce it to your team.  When she leaves lane push and try to take the turret, but be careful of her coming back to lane with the jungler while you are pushed.  It is better for your top and bot lane to retreat to turret and let you push mid turret rather than following.  However, if the fight looks like it will be close then follow evelynn and clean up the fight.

VS

Fizz

Hard

A good fizz can be extremely difficult to lane against. His mobility allows him tomaneuveraway from your plants and spells with ease and quickly close the gap to you. Poke with Q+W when he tries to last hit and quickly back up so he cant engage you. Once your Q is back up go in and repeat. Do not try to fight him 1v1, he will win. Play defensive and give up farm if needed to stay alive and in lane. If you land some good poke you can take lane dominance and force him to step down.

VS

Karthus

Easy

Plays very smilar to Anivia match-up. Just don't get caught by his wall and pelted to death by his Q. Poke from a range and back out when your spells are on CD. You can always choose to just farm and push vs Karthus. Zyra has much better roam.

VS

Katarina

Medium

Katarina can seem tricky, but if played right you shouldn't have to much of a problem. Poke often with Q+W but try not to allow her to shunpo to and combo you. If she does, try to hit her with a E+W as she runs away. However it can be tricky because her W gives her increased move speed. Be sure to get in a few auto attacks as she runs off and if your plant gets a slow on her you can get 3-4 in easily. When she tries to shunpo into you and and ult simply lay down your full combo. E+W+R+Q+W+Ignite and likely you will both die. Barrier is a viable option in this match-up because it allows you to tank her ult while your plants finish her off. Don't let a Katarina out push you or she will roam. As Zyra you should be able to create enough pressure that she isn't free roaming all over the map without losing her tower.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

Leblanc is a natural counter to casters due to her high burst, gap close, and silence.  The way to beat leblanc is to have enough health/magic resist to survive through the duration of silence.  Running flat MR runes is essential.  The magic resist from runes, masteries, and chalice/athenes should be enough.  However, if you fall behind in lane a negatron cloak or a rylia's/warmogs as your 2nd item will help you survive her burst in team fights later on.

Just like any other tough match-up for Zyra you will need to rely on Q+W poke to get ahead in lane.  Leblanc is exceptionabley weak at early levels, poke as much as possible.  Once she hits lvl 4 her combo becomes dangerous, so keep your health high with pots.  Once she is 6 play defensive and keep your range.  When she dashes in keep in mind she will port back to the marker on the ground 90% of the time, so land your spells there after the silence and you should be able to trade with her.

VS

Lux

Medium

Very Similar to Oriana match up.  Both long ranged short cool down champions with the potential to kill in lane if they land a snare.  I would suggest turning this into a farm lane.  Keep your distance and farm as much as possible.  If you move in for a kill you are giving Lux an equal opportunity to kill you.  You have better CC and AOE for team fights while Lux has the potential to catch and burst people down from a very far range.  The best way to kill Lux is to catch a snare on her while you are hiding in brush our out of visison, whoever lands the first snare will likely walk away with the kill.

VS

Mordekaiser

Easy

Very similar to Ryze match-up (see Ryze match-up). Mord W can't out poke your Q+W and he has no mobility to escape your spells. Mord can get a bit of extra shields during fights from your plants but you should still be able to out damage him overall.

VS

Morgana

Easy

Very easy lane to farm against. Its hard to poke her out of lane but at the same time she can't do much to you unless she lands a lot of binds. If she ever decides play agressive and try to ult you quickly break her spell shield with Q+W. Then land E+W+R+Ignite and you will out burst her. If shedoesn'tplayaggressivesimply push, farm wraiths, and roam.

VS

Nidalee

Medium

(Assumed AP Nid) Pre 6 Nid shouldn't give you much trouble aside from dodging a few spears. However she has enough range and sustain that poking her doesn'taccomplishmuch and denying her is nearly impossible. Just farm the lane. Once Nid gains lvl 6 she has kill potential on you. In most match-ups you can poke down your opponent and move in for a kill once they are under full health. However you will rarely ever see Nid under full health for more than a few seconds. For this reason you should treat nid as a farm lane. Even though she will bepouncingin and out of minions and look like an easy kill she rarely is. If she is getting overaggressiveon you, just back up. If she is close to your tower you can try to get a kill with E+W+R+Q+W+Ignite. But don't chase if it doesn't work. Keep enough health pots to heal back up in case you eat a spear. Stay away from the sides of the lane so she can't spear you from the brush. Roaming isn't really an option here because of the abundance of traps and nid's push. Its hard for a jungler to gank a nid through traps. Simply farm while dodging spears. Its not fun, but you can easily come out of lane phase even if you play it right. Take the game to late and AP nid is worthless in team fights.

VS

Orianna

Easy

Orianna and Zyra are both  long range with excellent wave clear which makes fighting in this lane uncommon.  Most games this will likely turn into a farm fest, so be sure to get some mana regen and hit the wraith and wolf camps often.  If Orianna does place herself in a position for you to snare she is easily out bursted by Zyra.  Fighting Orianna in the early levels will likely result in unfavorable trades due to her powerful auto attacks, so wait until level 4-5 before engaging her.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

I like to run spell pen marks, Armor quints and seals, and ap per lvl glyphs vs strong AD mids such as Panth, Khaz, and Talon. This gives +25 armor.

Suggested 21/9/0 masteries.

If you used the suggested rune page and masteries you can win trades with Panth easily. Just poke him down with Q+W and save E+W for kills/escapes. If he jumps on you, you shouldn't have a problem blowing everything and killing him. Push your lane hard so any ganks he does will result in his tower dropping. Be careful when he backs and hasn't come to lane yet. If you are low he can ult in on top of you orcoordinatea jungler gank with the arrival of his ult.

VS

Ryze

Easy

Ryze has no mobilty to get away from your plants and abilities. This is one of the few lanes where playing Zyraaggressiveis beneficial. There is no reason not to abuse the huge advantage you have over Ryze in lane. Just be wary of jungler ganks. A fed Ryze will become unkillable later in the game. You can Q+W and E+W often to poke him, he cannot punish you very much even if you miss. E+W into Ult will likely secure a kill. Remember, aggressivedoes not mean reckless or stupid. If you miss spells back up. If you have no wards, don't go balls deep chasing him.

VS

Swain

Medium

Like Ryze and Mord, Swain has very little mobility. However with his ult he can out tank your full burst and your plants won't last long vs his multi target ult damage. Its best to farm vs him avoid fights. Swain players don't tend to roam often, so this shouldn't be an issue. Farm lane, farm wraiths, and wait for ganks. If you feel like you have enough AP to kill him, then be sure your ignite is up, preferably wait until he has been in ult for a few seconds or has just ended it, and then proceed to combo. E+W+R+Q+W+Ignite. You want to do this after he has already been in bird form for a bit last hitting. The longer Swain is in ult the more mana it costs per second. If you catch him like this he will likely go oom during the fight. Or if you catch him right after he pops out of ult (a little harder to do) you have yourself a free kill. But once again, Swain can easily tank your full combo and sit on top of you until you die. So be wary.

VS

Talon

Hard

I suggest running armor quints and barrier for this match-up in order to survive Talon's all-in burst.  Talon has both a gap closer, a silence, and an escape (his ult).  He can easily engage you, burst you while silenced, and escape if you don't die.  The only way to do well in lane vs Talon is land max range Q+W to poke him down before he can engage you.  Be wary of fortitude pots and all-ins at level two.  Allow him to zone you in the early levels in order to avoid dying.

VS

Twisted Fate

Medium

Twisted fate won't give you many problems in lane. However if you don't keep pressure on him he will roam and make plays with his ult. Try to keep him engaged in smallskirmishesmid. Trade poke if possible. He is unlikely to ult around the map if he isn't near full health. Dodge his cards and you should be able to out poke. If you see him use pick a card (throws a blue or red at minions) then its a good time to playaggressiveand try to poke him down while his stun is on CD. Make sure you have wards on both sides of the rivers so you can alert your teammates when he is heading their direction for an ult.

VS

Veigar

Medium

Veigar relies on a long CD stun to safety land his abilities. Use your superior range to poke him down. Even a couple plant auto attacks will take out a chunk of his health. If you see him charging throw out an E+W before as casts his stun. Hopefully he will be snared and out of range to deal damage to you while you are stunned. Playing passive and farming up is also an OK choice after 6 since he gains kill potential with his ult. You can clear lane faster than him and use the extra time to farm wraiths or roam.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

Poke as much as possible with you Q+W but don't take poke back. Vlad has very short range so use this to your advantage. His spell vamp, especially at low lvls, isn't as much as you think. You can still bully him out of lane. If his pool is ever CD you can kill him by landing E+W into Ult. Don't allow him to get on top of you. He will use all his abilities, and safely escape your ult and plants while his ignite and ult finish you off. If you see him charging E+W and back up.

VS

Zed

Hard

I would highly suggest running extra armor (armor quints) vs Zed just like you would vs talon/panth.  Zed relies heavily on his ult to burst.  If his ult is down or pre 6 use this to your advantage to get lots of poke on him.  1 Good Q+W will leave him at 2/3 health and unable to engage on you.  If he is ever at full health with his ult up he will likely try to all in you.  Be wary and keep your distance until you land poke.  When he ults he will become untargettable, so time your spells so that they hit when he becomes targettable again.  Don't be afraid to through your ult down on yourself when he ults in (the damage will miss becuase he is untargettable).  When he comes out of his ult he will be knocked up and in range of your plants.  You should be able to trade 1 for 1 when he all ins you if played correctly.

VS

Ziggs

Easy

Ziggs vs Zyra comes down to dodging Ziggs' Qs.  Its is primarily a battle of poke, however, Zyra has much better and easier to land poke than Ziggs.  Zyra can also combo for more damage at lvl 6 than ziggs.  Avoid his poke and counter poke with Q + W.  Landing a snare will result in an easy kill or forced flash.

Wards Back to Top

I cannot stress the importance of buying an abundance of wards on all mid lane champions.  It is NOT just the support's job to ward.  It is NOT your top lane's fault that your mid is killing them because they didn't have a ward.  It is NOT your bot lane's fault when they get 4man tower dove with no warning.  It is NOT your team's fault when the enemy sneaks baron because it wasn't warded.  It is your fault for not warding both sides of mid lane and providing extra ward coverage in other key parts of the map.

Every time you go back always buy 2-3 wards.  If you have 460g.  You do NOT buy a magic tome and a health pot.  You buy 2-3 wards 1-2 health pots and a faerie charm or save the gold for later.  If you have 1623g you do NOT buy the needlessly large rod.  You buy sorc shoes, a tome, and 2-3 wards.

To an amateur player a ward is simply to prevent a jungler gank on their lane.  But if you have read this much of a guide I assume you are trying to get better, so drop that view.  If a ward from purple team's mid lane spots the enemy jungler on blue team clearing his wraiths and then moving further down into his jungle what does this imply?  This tells your top lane "You are safe from ganks for now."  It tells your bottom lane "Look out, the jungler could potentially gank you through tri-bush or lane soon."  It tells your jungler "I can prepare to steal blue, dive top lane, or prepare a counter gank bottom."  In this case lets pretend that your friendly Amumu jungler decides to go camp the friendly brush lane bot and wait to see if the enemy jungler comes.  After about 15 sec a fight breaks out bot, sure enough, the enemy jungler that your ward saw moving in that direction leaps from the lane brush and joins the fray.  Amumu is in position and ready, landing a perfect 3 person ult followed by a friendly sona ult while graves cleans them up for a triple kill.  Your team quickly heads to dragon and secures it.

Lets add up the amount of gold.

Dragon 190x5 = 950g
3 kills + assists = 1200g
CS missed by enemy while dead = 400g
Watching the enemy ADC rage quit because Graves got a triple kill = priceless.

No, not every ward will lead to a huge play like this, but some do.  And these plays happen because of wards, not sheer luck.  If you consistently are placing down wards every game you will be the reason that plays like this happen eventually.  Not to mention the ward is still covering your own hide in mid lane from ganks.

Where to ward? (Image and text for ward positions taken from Yuli'a Ahri Guide)

wardspots.png

  • 1 and 2 are symmetrical spots I consider to be good to ward regardless of which side you're on. They both give advance warning of junglers coming from out of their own jungle, coming from the river, or entering your own jungle.
  • 3 and 4, being farther in, don't give you as much advance warning as 1 and 2. They also don't give you as good coverage of the entrance to your own jungle. However, they make up for the weakness of 1 and 2, which is that once a jungler enters those bushes, you can't tell if he has recalled or if he is camping for 5 minutes straight.
  • Any combination of 1, 2, 3, and 4 should provide good ward coverage.

  • 5 and 6 are more aggressive ward locations for their respective sides. You can use these to spot the enemy jungler at his wraiths and possibly ambush him, or you can use them to steal the wraith camps.
  • 7 and 8 are safeguards for their respective sides against high level gankers like 4_icon_64.png Twisted Fate, who will shove the lane and gank through his own jungle. Wards at these positions will give you continuous sight even if he pushes.
  • 9 and 10 are counter-jungle wards for their respective sides. You can use these to steal and deny the enemy blue buff.

Climbing the Solo Queue Ladder Back to Top

ELO Hell does not exist.  Accept this.  If you wallow in self pity because you keep getting "The worst teammates imaginable" you will never improve yourself.

Go into each and every game expecting all teammates to pull their weight.  Comments like "I can't carry if I'm not mid" in champion select are creating a negative atmosphere before the game even begins.  Fill the needed role if you don't get your best role and try your best.

If a player makes a mistake early or dies to a gank, even if they took your role, just shut up, and play your game.  They are likely upset at themselves, having a bickering child yelling at them in chat will just frustrate them further.  The ONLY thing you have to gain from insulting them is to to mend your wounded pride that they took the role you wanted.  "If you can't say something nice don't say something at all" goes a long way in solo queue.

One of the hardest things about solo queue is dealing with the toxic players.  It is really frustrating when you are having a bad game and your teammates start blaming you.  You want to defend yourself, I know.  But don't.  They don't want to hear your excuses, they just want something to rage at.  Mentally ignore them or use the in-game ignore feature.  If you type back to them, they will type back to you and then your team loses because no one is focused on winning the game anymore.

Never surrender.  Even when you are down a large amount the enemy team can make mistakes.  The game is designed around making comebacks.  You are granted a huge amount of bonus exp for killing champions higher lvl than you.  Static gold income was buffed dramatically in season 3, so you aren't behind by as much as you think.  The biggest danger about falling behind is team morale dropping.  Don't be the player that AFKs in fountain, spams surrender votes, or says GG after every lost fight.

It is OK to get excited when you win.  It is OK to be upset when you lose.  It is OK to be angry when your top lane feeds.  It is NOT OK to relieve your emotions by insulting others.  It is NOT OK to pretend you have never been in your top laner's position.

Control your emotions, be empathetic, and never give up!

See you at the top summoners!
