Summoner Spells Back to Top

11.png Obviously Smite is a must-have summoner spell when jungling as Volibear.

4.png Currently, I feel like Flash is the best option for Volibear as it provides a reliable gap-closer to flip an enemy carry, and cannot be effectively peeled off, unlike Ghost. Volibear particularly struggles to close distances between enemy ranged champions even with Ghost, so in general Flash is the better summoner spell for making picks and engages.

The W buffs have made maxing W fantastic for the jungle, improving your clear, damage and attack speed.

Afterward, getting the scaling movespeed on the Q is best.

Taking one point in E is enough for the aoe fear.

Generally, starting W is best for taking camps like Gromp and Krugs, especially when you get a leash. If you are forced to solo a camp, particularly if it's Raptors or Wolves (which should never really happen) it can be more efficient to start E, but mainly W is the best bet.

Starting Items

Machete is the only real competition here. It's just to valuable to be able to rush a jungle item after your first clear and start being efficient in the jungle.

Core

I personally like Chilling Smite on Volibear, as it gives you a reliable way to close the gap when ganking and fighting. Other alternatives can be Challenging Smite and Ranger's Trailblazer, depending on your playstyle (farming, dueling, etc.). After this generally Merc Treads are your best bet in the CC-heavy tank meta that we live in, but other alternatives are Mobi boots when ahead and Ninja Tabi against heavy AD auto-attackers. Afterwards, Righteous Glory is a good item to rush to start snowballing a lead. Alternatively Locket of the Iron Solari can be good, as well as Randuin's, Frozen Heart or Spirit Visage depending on how you feel the game is going.

Situational

Volibear benefits almost entirely from tank stats. Spirit Visage is a very high priority item to boost the effectiveness of your passive. Otherwise, health stacking is very efficient on Voli, as his passive heals for a percentage of his max health. Don't build too squishy, or you'll never have a meaningful impact after early-mid game.

Ganking Back to Top

Ganking

Volibear has some of the best ganks of any jungler especially early. Laneganks are absolutely vicious as you can flip them back into your team and pretty much kill them without them being able to escape. The damage on your W is insane especially when the enemy has lost some health. Try to be involved in a lot of kills early and get your lanes fed. Avoid taking kills as your lane can do more with them than you can, although fed Volibear is a lot of fun. Win your lanes for you team and you win the game. Capitalize on any lane that hasn't got wards as if you can get close enough to flip the enemy is dead.

If you can sneak in behind a champion without using your Q, you should save using it until they use any escapes they have to get away from you. For example, when ganking 58_64.png Renekton, save your Q until he attempts to Slice and Dice through you, so that you can catch him and flip him to stop him escaping. Using your Q to early can result in the enemy using their gap closer afterward giving them plenty of time to escape.
