11.png - kinda obvious for jungling :)
4.png - I prefer taking flash over ghost, even though it has been nerfed and has very long cooldown. Udyr already has great chasing ability with his Bear Stance, and flash is there to do crazy flash-stun initiations / interrupts.

Attack Speed Marks - Phoenix Udyr's basic offensive stat is attack speed, because he will proc Phoenix Stance more often (the flame burst). Therefore it gives him better clear speed early on, and helps landing those stuns later because of faster auto-attacks.

Armor Seals - standard jungling runes, pretty much in every jungle build, nothing much to explain, you will need those to survive early jungling and be able to gank with almost full HP.

MR per level Glyphs - another standard jungling runes, Udyr is a tank, therefore he needs to be built as one. Due to the lack of good mr items in the game, those runes help a lot with scaling into late game.

Movement Speed Quints - Udyr does not have any gap closer so he needs something to have an advantage over his enemies during a gank. MS quints give him the speed he needs to chase down anyone he wants and also to land successful stuns.

Utility: 0

Standard masteries for support-tank junglers. You can experiment with those, taking whatever u prefer there (tenacity instead of slow reduction), depending on the team you are against. Anyway Udyr is not damage dealer, but he has very strong kit early, even without offensive masteries.

Phoenix Stance Udyr


Early you want to go R-W-E-R, as you will probably take the fastest jungle route, in order to gank fast. Most of the times I end up going like this, and having all 3 abilities at lvl 3 with double buff is just perfect to force flash or even get a first blood.

You may be vulnerable to early invades without your stun at lvl 2, but shield from W will keep you safe and buy some time to call teammates from other lanes. Assuming that they will come, it's very likely to get a kill on enemy jungler or secure your own buff.

The most important thing will be maxing R (Phoenix Stance) of course, as it will be your main damage ability, giving you one of the best clearing speeds in the League.

After that it's either maxing Shield (W) or Bear Stance (E). It's mainly up to You, where you  want to put next points. The safest route will be maxing shield, but some games will require more chasing abilities, therefore maxing Bear Stance will be more important. I often end up maxing both at the same time.

Q is non-existent in Phoenis Stance Udyr build. Taken on last levels, may speed up taking down towers, but this ability is boosted only by AD, and you will have none.

Start with:

1039_32.png + 2003_32.png x5 - standard jungle start items, nothing really to explain here, just buy those to clear as fast as possible with as much sustain as possible early.

After that you will be aiming to get something around 750g for 1080_32.png + 1001_32.png to boost your clearing spped, sustain as well as overall movement speed. Grabbing a ward 2044_32.png or two is always nice (and advised). Help protecting your teammates from the ganks, they will appreciate it! :)

Core:

I always rush boots as my 1st big item, grab one of theese: 3111_32.png / 3047_32.png / 3009_32.png (depending on the enemy team). Yes, i also put boots of swiftness there, because it's viable choice for Udyr, giving him a lot of speed, reducing incoming slows as well as greatly increasing his chasing potential. I am experimenting with those, with really good results at the moment.

After that you will be grabbing 3190_32.png as your next item. It gives you everytihng you need: HP, armor, CDR, as well as nice active ability (dont forget to use that though!). It's very common pickup nowadays for any kind of jungler, because of the very low cost and great benefits comming from this item.

At this point your inventory should look like this:

Mid / Late game:

After completing the core items you will be looking to increase your tankiness as much as possible, aiming towards countering the enemy team damage. By that I mean, that you have to decide what you need the most. For example if their AP mid player gets fed and scary, go for 3065_32.png ASAP to negate his damage. If your support is struggling with warding, and your team needs quick Aegis / Bulwark (3107_32.png), go ahead, grab it! My main point is, that Udyr has a really strong kit, and he is not very item-dependant champion, therefore you don't have any goal items after your core. Just pick up whatever is needed at the moment to maximize your team's tankiness.

After my core, I usually grab one of theese: 3065_32.png / 3025_32.png , after that I usually go for the other one :)
Gauntlet is really good item on Udyr, giving him armor, cdr and great aoe slow effect, allows to really lock down anyone you want in the teamfight. It gives a lot of utility, therefore it's usually me 2nd or 3rd item after Locket.

Having those two in your inventory, you are approaching the point of Udyr's unkillable mode. Theese Items, as well as his kit allow you to annoy the sh*t out of your enemies :D You can tank really big ammounts of damage, also chase and slow whoever you want, just great in teamfights.

Theese are very expensive for a jungler, so it's considered a Late-Game build. After that you want to increase your tankiness even more, through grabbing some more resistances and HP.

3068_32.png - pretty good item if you are going for some split-pushing (which Phoenix Udyr is really great in).
3069_32.png - grabbing this is also not a bad Idea, because it increases your initiation potential.
3107_32.png - as I said before, it's also great item to build right after the core for maximum team protection against AP damage.
3143_32.png - not so bad item, HP, armor and nice slow effect, makes it exeptional when fighting against annoying ad carrys.
3110_32.png - also pretty good against auto-attack oriented teams, although normally I choose the path of gauntlet.
3207_32.png - if you went for 3047_32.png or 3009_32.png it's good to grab this to maximize your overall tenacity.
3091_32.png - despite it's nerfs, really good item on Udyr, boosting his attack speed as well as mr, with some extra damage to be a beast!
3026_32.png - it's already really hard to kill you quickly, adding this will make your enemies wanna kill themselves, because thay will have to kill you again ;P

Items that are not so good on Udyr:


3154_32.png - bleh, you are not single-target jungler, although jungle camps are more single-target friendly that they used to be, this is not the greatest pickup. You don't need lifesteal, Turtle Stance gives you already a great sustain. Udyr's only AD-scaling ability is Q, which will be taken at lvl 16, so you wont benefit from that at all, also very expensive.
3022_32.png - pretty much for the same reason as above, you dont need AD, the slow effect would be nice, but you already have 3025_32.png, which is much better.
3083_32.png - Although it is not the end of the world if u get one, but it's much better to build 3143_32.png from that 1011_32.png.
3102_32.png - I guess it's not so bad, but 3065_32.png gives you CDR, also boosts the heal from Turtle Stance, while being much cheeper overall.

There are no hard counters to jungle Udyr, but some are harder and some are easier. Basically, it's really hard to invade Udyr, because it's really hard to kill him 1 vs 1 quick enough to do some counter jungling. He will buy enough time for the teammates to come and help, so smart junglers will avoid any fights in the enemy jungle.


Udyr is great counter jungler, because he has really quick clearing speed, as well as overall movement speed, so he can quickly steal those wraiths / golem / wolfs and escape the jungle without anyone noticing.

I will update the matchups later anyway, if the guide gets any attention :)



Tips and tricks Back to Top

At the start you will need some practice, before trying Udyr in ranked play, because he is pretty hard jungler, and he can't be just played by anyone without any previous experience. I am assuming, that you considered that.


-> Udyr's new passive gives him bonus movement speed (up to 15), which is really good, when you want to move quickly around the map

-> Spamming Bear Stance with some other ability will allow you to keep up the passive and maximize your movement speed if you need to get somewhere quickly

-> Udyr is very mobile champion, abuse that, gank often, especially when enemy is not expecting you so quickly after earlier gank.

-> many players nowadays won't expect you to do any damage at all, suprise them, pop up phoenix right after you stunned them, and watch them burn! :D

-> remember that Bear Stance's Stun can be activated once every few seconds, but the cooldown only applies to the same target, so you can just hit everyone around you once to really annoy them and stun everyone for 1 second. Really great for any interruption.

-> Playing against Galio have thought me that you can easily interrupt his ult just by hitting bear stance right before he starts to cast it, you will naturally go towards him as you get taunted and you will simply stun him with the first hit, interrupting the ulti.

-> keep reactivating your shield as often as possible when ganking / dueling / teamfighting, to shield as much damage as possible (it's really op).

-> Phoenix Stance gives you great pushing potential, abuse that to grab quick waves / splitpush / clear large waves.

-> Always remember not to steal every kill as you gank. You are the support-tank, you wont benefit from kills at all. Although it makes you stronger and you will get your items faster, overall it's much better to give the kills to the laners, to really help them snowball, they will really appreciate it ! :)
