Summoner Spells Back to Top

Ight guys we are going to start on out summoner spells now this is all going to depend on what kind of Sona your going to be.

4.png
Ight so lets start out with Flash easily the best summoner spell for Sona now this is you offensive spell your defensive spell and your utility spell. Now new players will ask "How can this such a good spell with no downside?" and  my answer to you guys is this spell is what lets Champions with no natural escape built in to be viable Sona being one of these champs that she can blink/teleport through walls so this is what lets you play her with a lot more safety. For offence you are going to want to use this to Flash into a better spot for saving a fellow champ or getting your ult to hit an entire enemy team the better you get at using your flash the better player you will be with all your champs so learn to use it well.

3.png
Exhaust is my spell of choice I feel like it has just soo many uses from securing a kill to letting someone escape or helping someone win a trade. The way i like to think of this spell is that for just a few seconds you make your enemy ADC like 5+ levels below you be careful if your target has 1.pngCleanse since he will break the slow effect Or if its a Olaf2_icon_64.png since his ult will break the effect as well  so make sure you know that his summoner spell is on cool-down before you waste yours.

7.png
Heal is a summoner spell that works very well with Sona this lets you heal people when your normal healing spell is on cool-down now and you need that clutch heal to save someone and this also helps a lot in team fights where u give your team and extra 345 HP at Level 18.
READ THIS: When you use this the people healed will get a effect on them that says that healing effects on them are cut in half this healing reduction ONLY applies to other heal summoner spells so your heals will still give them the full effect!!!

13.png
Clarity is one spell that i feel that is very niche you wont really need this once you learn how to manage your mana and the build I talk about has more than enough mana regen built in it. your going to want to take this when your in lane with someone like 15_icon_64.pngSivir where her main damage in lane comes from spamming her abilities you want to make sure that she can do that for as long as possible to keep the pressure on the enemy team to force them to recall.

14.png
Ignite is a summoner spell i normally wouldn't recommend on a support but for Sona its ok i your doing a very pokey lane with some one like 81_icon_64.pngEzreal or 51_icon_64.pngCaitlyn i would personally still take 3.pngExhaust but ignite on Sona is very viable. For new players you are going to use this only for securing kills in lane and in team fights your going to use this on people who have amazing health regen like 36_icon_64.pngDr. Mundo.
READ THIS: When in lane you don't want to take the kills from your ADC so what you need to try to do is save your ignite for when you know your ADC's ignite is on cool-down and you know he cant secure the kill its a little hard to learn when is the right time to use it and you might Kill Steal every now and then but once you get it down people will praise you for it so if your going to take ignite regularly please take my advise and learn when to use it properly.

2.png
Clairvoyance is a very good Summoner Spell but the problem is that the better communication your team has the better this spell gets you can use this to get the timers for your enemy jungle to help your jungler to counter-jungle or this can help save a teammate from a gank, coordinate a invade better scout to see if dragon or baron are being taken or are even there. As you see there are tones of uses but you team needs to be aware of you using it so they can take advantage of it so if your in a premade team diffidently take this into consideration.
READ THIS: If you are going to take this spell you need to take the enhanced version by taking the point in your mastery tree it is called Summoners' Insight it is in the Utility tree you would normally take this but make sure you always have the enhanced version it keeps vision on players hit by your Clairvoyance for a few seconds and that is huge!

Runes Back to Top

  • 9x

  • 9x

  • 3x
+1 gold / 10 sec. Greater Quintessence of Gold

Ok remember like everything else in this guide this isn't a bible for how to play Sona so if you don't agree with my build its ok you don't need to follow it.

XQB94104.bmp
Gold Quintessence- These are essential for any support since you wont be hitting any minions you will be behind on gold this helps lessen the blow along with a few Materies and a 3096_32.pngPhilosopher's stone you'll be able to build exactly what you need to be a successful support.

greater-seal-of-resilience.png
Armor Seals- Now I know what some people are saying "OMG WHY ISN'T HE TAKING THE GOLD PER 10 SEALS!!!!!" fuuuface.gifso this is my reasoning. Since the major preseason 3 patch they changed a lot of things
1) They lowered the amount of gold minions give you for killing them but in exchange the gold you generate naturally has been increased.
2) The cost of a lot of items have been decreased so the things you would have normally bought are somewhat cheaper.
Now the Advantage for getting these armor seals is that you can do a lot of things that normally you wouldn't be able to do as well as you did before.
1) With Sona having a natural aura that gives her armor that stacks with these seals and a spam-able heal she can freeze lanes much better than other support and come back with taking little to no damage from it.
2) While supporting you will normally be in lane versus a enemy ADC now what this lets you do is take their poke a lot better and not always having to heal yourself you can focus on keeping your ADC nice and healthy.
3) Since now you can take 3 or 4 hits without exploding into gold for the enemy team to spend killing you team you can stay in the fight longer this means your going to be doing a lot more healing and aura buffing and getting more assists that means more gold for you!
So now that i made my case yes you can still take the Gold Per 10 seals but now you know that there is this option available for you.

gg4.png
Magic Per-Level Glyphs- I like these Glyphs for the same reason that I take the Armor Seals in team fights you'll be able to take AoE damage a lot better so they can out poke you through your team and lets be honest you the carrying the team not your Fed Ezreal so you staying alive is a good thing :)

mark4.png
Magic Penetration Marks- Sona has a lot of hurt behind her even if she is a support her passive lets her deal lots of damage to the enemy's squishy ADC and your Q spell has a bit of punch to it this just helps with the hurt so you can really back up your ADC when he decides to go in on a fight in lane phase these have a nice impact so i would take these but again there are always other options.

0-9-21 that's the split that i think works great for Sona and with the new Masteries things just got silly for Sona I'm going to break down the key points in each tree so you can see what suits you best

Offense Tree- I personally don't invest at all in this but that doesn't mean there aren't some goodies for Sona in there putting 9 points in this tree gives you great value getting 4% cool-down some AP and 8% Magic Penetration is no joke this lets you spam more and hit harder if you really want to harass and make them think twice about going in for a fight then invest 9 points here but anymore than that and think your wasting you points.

Defense Tree- This is where I like to put my points in as you see I'm keen on surviving so what you get here is +30HP right from the start so you can take a hit a bit better in the early levels where you not the all powerful Sona you want to be yet the health you get from leveling up will end up giving u 1 extra bar at level 18 you get Hp regen so you can focus healing your ADC  and more armor to freeze lanes better.

Utility Tree- Now this is the tree where we are going to want to delve right into your going want to drop 21 points to get all the goodies this tree has to offer. What your going to want to get is all 3 of the Cool-down Buffs so you can spam more Moves, Summoner Spells, and Actives on the amazing new items Riot decided to throw in for Season 3. Other things to look at in this tree is the Gold per 10 to help you build and Pickpocket since Sona loves to harass you are going to get rewarded for it with MORE GOLD!!! and the last major thing to look at is  BOTH  of the movement speed boosts you'll be getting now what this lets you do paired with your natural speed buff from your E Spell is that you can now delay on buying boots a little longer since you will be mobile enough for the early part of the lane phase you can go and buy you 3096_32.pngPhilosopher's Stone before you get you boots with less drawback than before.

Ok now for leveling up you spells you don't need to follow this exactly if you are getting harassed Level up your heal quicker and usual the movement aura normally is going to be leveled up last i cant really think of why you would want to level that up before the other 2.

Power_Chord.jpg
Power Chord (Passive)- This passive gives Sona 2 things 1)Sick one hit damage when it comes to what supports deal 2) depending what song your playing at the time you attack has a added effect
(Q)~Hymn of Valor- Her next attack will do double the damage that power chord would normally do.
(W)~Aria of Perseverance- Her next attack will de-buff her target so they deal 20% less damage over all for 4 seconds.
(E)~Song of Celerity- Her next attack will slow her target by 40% for 2 seconds.
(R)~Crescendo- Your ult doesn't have a a song stance that it puts you in.
How you use these effects will determine how well you can support your team so learning what each does and how to take advantage of them is crucial. Remember that you need to build 3 stacks to get this effect each stack is built by using one of you spells so keep on spamming :)

Hymn_of_Valor.jpg
Hymn of Valor(Q)- This is you main damaging spell aside from your ult but you wont use that to just deal damage. This on the other hand is all about damage you send out 2 beams that seek two different targets and deal magic damage as well as granting a aura that raises allies' (that includes yourself) Attack Damage and Ability Power so when your teams needs a push to take a tower or finish off a team pop this Aura out to give that nice push.

post-25004-1295699237.jpg
Aria of Perseverance(W)- This is your Healing move it heals you and allies for a decent amount it has a low cool-down so mash away and keep you team at full health the aura this grants is added armor and magic resist so if your team is a little behind this aura can turn the tides and have you team out last the enemy. Also the Power cord effect that comes from this move is easily the best one you want to be careful and use this one on the enemy ADC or APC to keep there damage down and when paired with exhaust they wont be dealing enough damage for you team to even care!

SongofCelerity.jpg
Song of Celerity(E)- This is the worst of your abilities and the best part about it is that its still amazing and game changing. This move is very simple is make your team faster and when u activate it you go even faster so when going back to lane spam this move like crazy to get back in the lane faster and build stacks for you passive. A very interesting interaction with this move is that is also effects minions so this helps you minions push faster so use that to keep the enemy minions a little farther away from you tower.

spell_357.jpg
Crescendo(R)- This is your ultimate your most game breaking spell how you use this spell will determine how team-fights will go you send sound waves forward in a area and everyone in the area dances in a stun state for 1.5 Seconds this move is one of the best ultimates in the game you want to get as many people in it as possible and disrupt as many spells and buffs as possible the fate of many team-fights rests in your hands when your Sona so make sure you don't waste this ult cause the cool-down is fairly long an costs a lot of mana.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Builds in to philosophier's stone quicker
Meant to counter ward with solid sustain
Longer ward times with sustain slower build but safer
when dealing with lots of harass or a kill lane
Quickest way to get you Philosopher's Stone

Core Items

    Core Build
    Other Boot Options

Situational Items

    Defensive Items
    Offensive Items
    Utility Items

What you build is what is going to impact you the most in game so chose what you build wisely because this is where most of your stats will be coming from.

Starting items- I love starting with Faerie Charm 2x Red Pots and 2x Green Wards i think that is the best start off since 3 wards lets you play aggressive with them and ward what ever you want while the faerie charm lets you start on building your philosopher's stone and the pots for sustain in lane. There are other options now with 2041_32.pngCrystalline Flask you can get different starting items but I always recommend getting at least 1 ward and starting with cloth armor is if you know you are going to get some serious harass and you don't want to be bullied too much out of lane and the cloth armor can always get build into a 3105_32.pngAegis of the Legion later so it wont go to waste.

Core Build- This core build is going to give you everything you want when you playing Sona it has cool-down and lots of mana regen so you can spam and heal all you want. I like to go with the cool-down boots just so you have your moves up quicker and your ult cool-down gets cut down but there are other options for Sona. Shurelya's Reverie is and has been a staple for supports it has a Gold per 10 item built in the recipe gives you cool-down, health and mana regen, and a amazing active that lets you engage or disengage a fight effectively. Mikael's Crucible is a new item for supports that is great is has a similar effect that 3140_32.pngQuicksilver Sash has that it removes all debuffs but you can give it to any ally you want plus it heals them for a decent amount this is a amazing item since you can save a teammate that go focused down early in a fight or save your carry its a wonderful item and it has the mana font ability so you wont be low on mana for a long time.

Situationl items- There are a few items in question in my situational list like deathfire graspbut like the section says situational these are niche items each to fit their own role.

Defensive items-

3107_32.pngRunic Bulwark- This item really ends up being a upgraded Ageis of the Legion it makes your team and yourself move tanky if you team is squishy then I would recommend this since its a amazing item that has a nice impact on your team and paried with Sona's passive defensive aura its very nice.

3110_32.pngFrozen Heart- I usually take this if people build 3085_32.pngRunnan's Hurricane to try and soften the blow of this item by taking frozen heart also the cooldown is a nice addition as well as tons of mana you'll pretty much take full advantage of this item so nothing goes to waste.

3190_32.pngLocket of the Iron Solari- This is a item im not too fond of but im going in dpeth with this guide so ill tell you about it, it gives you Hp regen and some cooldown but the big thing on this is that fact that u give you team a shield problem is that the shield isnt too amazing its just good enough to pass but it a katarina does her ult in the middle of your team then this will save their lives.

Offensive Items-
3001_32.pngAbyssal Scepter- This item is going to give you more potent heals a decent amount of magic resist but more importantly is the Debuff aura that your getting this helps your team alot if your team is a decent amount of Ap then this is a good item to help them out.

3050_32.pngZeke's Hearld- So i heard you did your job well in bot lane got you ADC fed like crazy well good lets snowball this game with a Zeke's Herald and stick to your ADC like glue while he thanks you for winning every trade for the rest of the game. That's what you get with this item its amazing for keeping your lead and growing off it.

3060_32.pngBanner of Command- One of the new support items added in the preseason this is a very interesting item since it helps your team as well as passively pushing lane now i don't recommend getting this while your still laning since you will overextend and leave you open to ganks but when your team in pushing and you have this paired with you E speed up move you will push lanes very quickly also the promote feature is great for split pushing while keeping your team together overall a great item.

3092_32.pngShard of True Ice- This item I believe to be very team specific if you have a pokey team then don't bother sinc u need someone like 12_icon_64.pngAlistar or 54_icon_64.pngMalphite in you team to make this a great buy u need someone who is going to be in there face so you can keep chasing and grab a few extra kills or force people to use their flash.

3128_32.pngDeathfire's Grasp- Ok now u must be looking at this and saying why would i ever build this item and you
usually wont but on occasion you'll look at it and see its a viable option. you are going to buy this only when you team needs to focus on one guy to win a team-fight that guy that got fed and he needs to go down fast this works better if you have a decent amount of Ap on your team since they will deal 20% more damage that's what your looking to take advantage of you hit there guy with this and your 131_icon_64.pngDiana just eats him alive this is a VERY NICHE item but always remember this is available to you.

Utility Items-
3023_32.pngTwin Shadows- I've been loving this item it gives you all the good stuff your looking for. the way i see it its generates 2 ghosts that act as wards that hunt people down and slow them this will chase them even if you don't see them from the fog of war this also gives you movement speed and a little bit of Ap its just a great thing to have in your toolbox.
3056_32.pngOhnwrecker- A very cool item you can make Safer turret dives by delaying the turret's next shot for  few seconds I like to take this if I have someone like a 2_icon_64.pngOlaf or a 120_icon_64.pngHecarim as my jungler so he can chase down people and get those kills alot safer.
3157_32.pngZhonya's Hourglass- A very Niche item but i might as well talk about it this is your safety net if you getting focus too much your auras still stay to help you team while they try to clear the people off of you and 100Ap isn't too bad either but again not a item your gonna invest in every game.
3276_32.pngBoot Enchantment: Captain- This is a nice item i helps keep you team together by speeding them up if they are going towards you so this tends to keep guys in a group and not wandering alone this is also nice if they run back to you from a team-fight they will get the boost as well.

How to Ward
1b5c5edafe6a2504f467fcff3cb0.jpg
Your goal when warding is to make the enemy jungle useless and to get the most information per ward as possible so you want to know where are the key target you want warded and remember you should not be the only person warding so make sure your team knows that.
What to remember about warding:
As support it's important that you always carry wards and ward crucial areas but encourage others to also ward.Your jungler should carry wards to ward his blue and red buffs, the enemy's if he so chooses and objectives such as Baron NashorYour mid carry can also ward their river bushes to help prevent ganksSolotop should always ward their river bush and tribush to prevent ganks
