Summoner Spells Back to Top

14.png

You want to take this 80% of the time since Nidalee has a high killing potential especially after level 6. Ignite allows you to do absurd amount of damage with Nidalee's combo. Healing reduction is always nice too.

3.png

I've fiddled around with both ghost and exhaust but I prefer exhaust. In my opinion, exhaust is more useful than ghost is since you're probably already going to escape/catch with your passive and pounce. With exhaust, you can do a lot of things such as baiting escaping ganks, mitigating nukes, bursting enemies with lower MR and armour. However, I still prefer ignite since Nidalee snowballs extremely well. I might get this in situations like when it's a
76_icon_64.png vs 55_icon_64.png matchup and our jungler is someone with weak presence.

4.png

Always get this in combination of whatever. It helps you set up for a combo or escaping sticky situations easily. Although both ignite and flash got nerfed, the utility that both summoner spells provides makes it worth it.

Very well-rounded rune setup for Midalee in both human and cat form. Provides Nidalee with necessary meatiness to balance the innate early squishiness while providing necessary damage for last hitting/harassing/trading/nuking.

Marks

I like to use the expensive hybrid marks. Numberwise, the hybrid runes are the most cost-efficient runes. It's extremely effective on Nidalee since she deals fair amount of both magic and physical damage. If you don't have hybrid runes or you don't like the feel of the runes like I initially did, feel free to use flat attack damage marks.

Seals

Why am I recommending armour when I'm a mid laner? Well my dear reader, the thing is you take PLENTY of physical damage early on. In fact, you probably take more physical than magical damage if you play Nidalee the way you're supposed to.

Glyphs

Pretty standard choice of runes for any mid laner. Magic resist helps you from getting your pathetic-base-MR-kitty-ass from getting bopped.

Quints

Quints are actually very open in terms of choices. You can run runes like MS, Flat AD/AP, or Hybrid Penetration. But once again, feel free to use any other runes like Flat HP or Magic Penetration. I just prefer going Flat AP/AD since it helps you harass/cs or sustain better in lane.

Skill Distribution Explained

Invest the first point on either the trap or spear. If you expect a normal early game, take trap in level one and place them on your jungler's first big camp for additional damage. Place the rest of the traps on possible gank routes of enemy junglers. If you're planning to fight level one, take spear. Place three points in heal for maximum sustain and additional harass. From there, Max Q since that is still your main source of damage, heal, and then lastly your traps.

Passive: Prowl

Ah prowl, simple yet so broken. In my opinion, Nidalee has one of the strongest passives in the game, providing 15% bonus movement speed when in the bush. Using this passive, you can do the following things: Escape, chase, harass, and travel.

Human Form

Javelin Toss: This skill is what makes and breaks Midalee.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Faerie Charm, 4 HP pots, 2 MP pots, 1 ward.
If you're planning to go Rod of Ages.

Core Items

Rush tear ASAP into boots of speed, then finish Deathcap. Make sure to pick up 2~3 wards every time you go back. Make sure to get sorcerer's shoes AFTER deathcap.
Endgame built might look something like this.
    Example build 2.
    Example build against brusier mid.

Situational Items

Mejais if it's a stompfest Abyssal if you're getting destroyed by magic damage Guinsoo's for early game domination Rod of Ages if lane not looking too hot. DFG for additional snowball.
Best Item to rush if you're against AD brusier mid. Make sure you get both penetration in masteries.
Good endgame item if you need additional health so you don't get instagibbed.

Personal thoughts on few of the items

2049_64.png

Turns out to be a huge money sink, don't recommend anymore.

3124_64.png

Before the change, this item was beast on Nidalee. Actually given how the item worked, Nidalee was the only champion that actually made good use of it. The new passive for Guinsoo's is pretty much useless on Nidalee but the new price is what really makes me not like this item anymore. Although 365 gold increase may not seem much, the problem is that the recipe price for Guinsoo's is now quite pricy. Getting Guinsoo's on Nidalee is purely for snowballing purposes and if getting that snowballing item has been delayed, there's little purpose of going such item. It's still okay though.

3023_64.png

This item is really only good on champions that can dish out damage constantly like Brand or Cassiopeia. Active is interesting but you already have traps so it's pretty useless on Nidalee. Stats that it gives you are pretty cool I guess.

3136_64.png3151_64.png

Although health is always good, spell penetration is not necessary on Nidalee early on. You get haunting guise on champions that can make the best out of midgame stage like Rumble or Katarina.

Liandry's Torment is an interesting item and an okay upgrade from HG late game but on Nidalee that much additional health and spell penetration is meaningless. The unique passive that Liandry's provides seems pretty good in the first glance, but think about it. It does 5% of their CURRENT health as additional damage. When you hit people, you're already doing around 1000 damage by the point where you get Liandry's. If you do 1000 damage onto a champion with 2000 max health, you're not even doing that much additional damage. Also Liandry's is very good on champions where these skills can be constantly hit like Anivia's E or Rumble's E. Getting Liandry's on Nidalee when your main skill to apply the passive DoT is a slow travelling skillshot, there's something wrong.

3152_64.png

You don't do enough stable amount of damage over time to make this item worth.

3128_64.png

Feels like you need to be way too close for this item to do it's job.

3165_64.png

Why get this when you can get Athene's or Archangel's?

3157_64.png

You should never be in a position where activation Zhonya's is necessary. You're also losing precious time where you can be placing a ward, nuking someone, and healing someone. This is not worth your gold on Midalee.

VS

Ahri

Medium

  • Harass w/ autos (will win trades)
  • Watch out and don't get hit by her charm
  • Although Nidalee's 6 is as strong as Ahri's 6, don't fall for baits and play safe. Ahri's burst will be higher than yours.
  • Be extremely aggressive when her ult is down.
  • You can out roam her but she will be able to perform more successful ganks.

VS

Anivia

Medium

  • Anivia is useless earlier on if she isn't able to land her stun. Try to evade her stun and punish/deny her.
  • Once Anivia lands a stun and follows up with her E, you will be below 1/2 of your health so harass with caution.
  • Anivia's 6 is a lot stronger than yours.
  • You can jump over her walls.
  • You can't clear waves against her since you will be in the radius of her ult.
  • You can easily out roam Anivias but only do so when you can make it count since she will be able to punish you extremely well due to her pushing capabilities.

VS

Brand

Medium

  • Using MS quint is good vs Brand since two of his major skills are skillshots and as long as you dodge them, he will be unable to follow up with additional damage.
  • Be careful when harassing him since he may punish you with three of his spells in a combo.
  • If you do get hit by his spells, try to heal yourself back to 3/4 of your max HP before attempting to harass him again.
  • Farm in Cat form post 6 to bait his skills! His W is extremely easy to dodge as Nidalee in cat form. Just make sure to save your pounce for the right moment.

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

  • Like Brand, considering using MS Quint against this champion.
  • Be very careful when harassing her with auto attacks. If she lands a Q on you, you will lose trades EXTREMELY hard and will spend the next while trying to heal yourself back up.
  • Her 6 is much more stronger than yours. Also be wary that you cannot change directions mid pounce therefore harassing in your cat form extremely risky.
  • Try not to fight her 1v1 unless you are sure that you will be able to kill her.

VS

Diana

Medium

  • Harass, harass, harass! She's a melee champion with easily dodgeable harass. Once she realizes that she cannot take anymore free damage when going for her farm, she will use her shield to protect herself or simply use her Q to last hit. From this, your lane will be pushed so call for an easy gank.
  • She can still easily burst you down at level 6 so don't get cocky just because you were able to deny her earlier on.
  • Her vortex(E) is capable of cancelling your jump mid-air.
  • If the opposing player is smart, she will try to roam in order to make up for the farm denied. Make SURE to call MIAs for she is an extremely strong ganker and continue pushing down her lane in order to punish her for leaving her lane.
  • NEVER attempt to trade with her when she lands a Q on you.

VS

Evelynn

Medium

  • Don't trade with her early on, she'll out trade you easily.
  • When her mana is down to 1/3, start harassing a lot.
  • If done properly, you should be able to kill her at 6.
  • Make sure you trap everywhere since Evelynn can roam and perform ganks exceptionally well.
  • Getting a pink ward for your lane isn't a bad idea.

VS

Fizz

Hard

  • You pretty much lose to him throughout the laning phase.
  • Focus on farming.
  • Try to distance yourself from Fizz even if that means you'd be losing cs if your HP is under 2/3 since he can burst you down very easily.
  • If possible, don't heal yourself when he applies the healing debuff onto you.

VS

Gragas

Medium

  • He's a melee champ, take advantage of it by harassing him when he goes for cs.
  • He can kill you as soon as he body slams you if you're not full hp with ignite so be extremely careful and stay behind minions.
  • If harassed correctly, you should be able to kill him at level 6. Be careful when you're both level 6 since he can set you up for a gank very easily.
  • When you have cat form, you can bait and dodge his barrels extremely easily.
  • Gragas can farm and roam better than Nidalee can, keep up with it.

VS

Karma

Medium

  • The new Karma is okay. She has decent waveclear and decent harass but it isn't too scary.
  • Harass her whenever you have the chance to in lane and you could try to go for a kill at 6 since she doesn't get anything special at 6.
  • Very prone to poking since she doesn't have much other abilities to stop enemies from poking.

VS

Karthus

Easy

  • You pretty much destroy this champ during laning phase.
  • His Qs still hurt a lot so be careful when trading, try to move in between creeps for reduced damage even if you were to get hit.
  • If timed well, you can technically jump over his walls but it's very hard to do.
  • He can punish you very hard if you don't make a successful gank so be wary of roaming.

VS

Katarina

Medium

  • Laning phase versus Katarina is relatively easy, her spells don't really do much damage to you so harass her a lot.
  • After 6, she is way stronger than you are if her ult is up. When farming in cat form, it's a good idea to save your pounce in case of her shunpoing to you and channeling her ult. Since you don't have any way to cancel her ult, the best way is to pounce away from it. After she does that, spend the next 30 seconds or so healing and be extremely aggressive since there's no way for her to outrade you.
  • Kat's a great roamer, make sure you ward and call MIAs if you don't want a completely denied Katarina come back to your lane with 3 kills.

VS

LeBlanc

Medium

  • Just max heal EZPZ.
  • Since you're maxing heal, you can keep up with her farm very easily and when she tries to roam, go into catform and push the lane out as hard as possible to punish her.
  • After laning phase she really can't do anything to you since she needs to be in range of her skills to do her deadly 1 shot combo but you're in the fog chucking spears anyway so GG.

VS

Lulu

Hard

  • Somewhat like LeBlanc except she can push EXTREMELY well. Autoattack the creeps to keep the lane evenly pushed.
  • She can also harass you way better than you can so be careful.
  • Even at 6, you're not in a good spot since she can just kite you when you try to harass her in catform and can even die so be extremely careful.
  • Her lategame sucks though so force objectives.

VS

Lux

Medium

  • Lux can actually trade very well with you due to her passive and her shield.
  • Because you won't be able to break her shield before it comes back since your main form of harass is autoattacks, just back off as soon as she deploys her shield.
  • Her burst at level 6 is impressive but so is yours, proceed with caution.
  • Make sure you ward everywhere because if she snares you and a jungler comes for a gank, chances are you're dead.

VS

Morgana

Easy

  • You already pretty much make one of her skills obsolete since you're going to be autoattacking most of the time.
  • Her bindings are very easy to dodge but if you do get hit by one, you're going to be chunked by quite a bit since she will also follow up with her AoE DoT.
  • She can burst you down from 100% at level 6 so be careful. She will attempt to engage with her ult and snare into DoT after stunned. Throw an ignite in there, you get a dead kitten. Be careful when farming with your catform near her.

VS

Orianna

Hard

  • Due to Orianna's passive, she can trade with you very easily with her autoattacks and your heals aren't enough since unlike you, she will throw two additional nukes in between her autoattack harass and when you're slowed, she might just ignite you and keep attacking you since you're slowed. At times like these, you might not even want to bother wasting flash since even after you flash, you will still be slowed where as she will be able to chase you down with her speed buffed from that area where her W has gone off.
  • Her level 6 is extremely scary since it can cancel your pounce and stuns you for a good second. It also displaces you, setting up for an easy gank.
  • You can outroam her relatively well though.

VS

Ryze

Medium

  • Ryze's laning phase is a lot scarier than Nidalee's. You won't be able to trade very well against Ryze since he can pummel you when you're snared.
  • Since his snare is an instantly casted spell, he can set up for ganks from junglers very well so be wary of this.
  • Your level 6 is technically stronger than his so if you traded well, you can attempt to kill him.
  • Ryze is a poor farmer but a great roamer. Sometimes it's better to just stay in your lane pushing if you see Ryze leaving his lane to gank. Just make sure to warn your teammates ASAP.

VS

Syndra

Hard

  • If Syndra knows what she's doing, she'll wreck you throughout the laning phase.
  • You can almost never go cat form since she can just burst you down with her combo.
  • You must wait it out until the teamfight stage.
  • Running 9/0/21 isn't a bad idea against Syndra.

VS

Twisted Fate

Medium

  • You can trade with him fairly well but just watch out for ganks early on combined with his gold card.
  • Since it's pretty much impossible outroaming a TF, make sure to ward a lot, call MIAs. and punish him for leaving the lane by pushing extremely hard.
  • If you push very hard, it will discourage TF from leaving his lane as often, thus forcing TF to keep up with the pushes that you will do in order to not lose global gold and pressure.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

  • He can easily out trade you even earlier on.
  • His level 6 is a lot stronger than yours and you cannot be on the offensive since when you jump in, he'll simply counter it by using his ult and simply KOing you with his combo.
  • His waveclear is insane.
  • Unlike you, his sustain is free, and oh yeah it's also a nuke.
  • You're going to be behind in the lane almost indefinitely unless the Vlad doesn't know what he's doing. You can either just let the game shift into midgame and teamfights while being behind Vlad or attempt to make plays by roaming and ganking other lanes.

VS

Xerath

Medium

  • A hard/medium difficulty champion depending on how you play it out. He has great burst potential after 6 so it's smart not to farm in your lane in your cat form.
  • Later on, Xerath will be immobilized when he w's so use that to your advantage and try to hit him while he's rooted.
  • Going straight up health by getting Rod of Ages or some magic resist with chalice into Athene is recommended.

VS

Zed

Medium

  • Extremely scary to play against normally but not that hard if you keep your distance.
  • Getting a tear into Seeker's Armguard is recommended.
  • Don't ever start trading with him in catform, you'll die.
  • Later in the game, it's easy to play against a Zed since he is weak against poking champs.

VS

Zilean

Hard

  • He'll just kill you.
  • He'll just revive when you kill him.
  • He'll just slow you when you engage onto him and kite you while nuking you down.
  • He'll just escape from your combo.
  • He can instantly clear the whole wave.
  • He falls off quite hard but his laning phase is just a nightmare to a lot of the champions at mid.
  • Maxing your heal is not a bad idea depending on how the laning phase goes.

VS

Zyra

Hard

  • She can trade with you very well due to her plants. Although harassing her now and then is fine, making farming your priority.
  • Her level 6 is a lot stronger than yours so be careful.
  • You can dodge her skills easily after you hit 6 since there's a delay before the skill actually activates.
  • She is a very immobile champion, make use of this.

Early Game Back to Top

I define early game as the phase between level 1 to 7. During this time, your goal is to last hit, harass with your autoattacks, and do your best to not die.

I'd like to talk a little bit more about autoattack harassing. Nidalee's early game strength is that you can harass your opponents with your autoattacks and simply healing yourself back, ultimately coming ahead in terms of health left over. Because we have 3 points in mediation, Biscuiteer mastery, and 3 health potions to start with, you're highly likely to win the trade battle as long as you don't get ahead of yourself and get bursted down. For example, against champions like Brand, who has absolutely no defensive attributes such as shields or spellvamp are extremely vulnerable against my Nidalee since I might lose that trade at that point, I'm simply going to heal myself back to full. Fast forward to level 5, all his potions are gone whereas you still have one health potion and a biscuit left over. Another thing I'd like to note is that because you're only harassing them with your autoattacks, you can concentrate your mana on healing yourself whereas other champions use their skills to harass you. This is also the reason why Orianna's such a scary champion to play against. She's incredibly well balanced out.

Mid Game Back to Top

I define mid game as the phase between level 8~14. In this phase, you should be farming, roaming, and forcing teamfights through objectives.

Nidalee is a great farmer and a roamer/ganker. You might think 'How is Nidalee a great roamer aside from the fact that she can travel fast? She has absolutely 0 CC!'. Well that is absolutely true. Good roamers are defined by: Quality of Crowd Control A.K.A. CC, total travel time (Mobility), and lastly damage. From the given categories, this is how I might grade Nidalee as a roamer/ganker.

Mobility: 10/10
Crowd Control: 0/10
Damage: 10/10 or 4/10

Naturally, crowd control aspect of Nidalee is zero considering she has literally 0 form of crowd control.

You might be wondering why is damage either 10/10 or 4/10? Well this is what makes or breaks Nidalee's ganks. If you don't land your spear before you initiate your ganks, you lose your element of surprise, give your position away, and lose 50% of your damage. Spears also allows Nidalees to perform impressive towerdives. Because enemies near their towers tend to be a lot less mobile, it allows for an easier shot. After you land your spear, your target will try to understand the situation he is in for a good whole second (I guess you could consider the panic moment a form of unofficial CC) and that creates a window for your team to jump in and dive. After your team moves in, that's when you follow up with the catform and ignite preferably if you still have it to finish your targets off. Don't forget that towerdiving is extremely effective with Nidalee since you can pounce out of tower's aggro range easily and heal yourself or teammates in danger.

I'm going to keep forcing objective part relatively short since I will be going into detail in the End game section. During mid game, forcing objectives are such as taking dragons and outer tower most of the time. Forcing Objectives is incredibly good on Nidalee because your opposing team will be focused on contesting that objective thus somewhat tunnelvisioning and staying clumped, allowing for easy spear shots and traps procs.

End Game Back to Top

I define end game as the phase after level 15. In this phase, you should be doing around 1000 damage to enemy carries at max range and only grouping up and forcing objectives.

At this point, you should be doing the following things. Dragon, Baron, buff control and tower demolition. Like I've said in the previous chapter, forcing objectives are very important. Especially at this point, wards will be covering the map, enabling the opposing team to dodge spears with relative ease. However, when you force the enemy team to move by attempting to take objectives, it's incredibly easy to land spears onto them. My favourite is when my team forces baron and because it forces their team to be funneled in relatively narrow paths, I can land at least two or three max range spears, thus withering down my foes before the imminent fight.

Aside from forcing objectives, another thing that you MUST work on is your positioning and targeting. League is a very flashy game and during teamfights, it's very hard to register everything that's going on. Even I have trouble today. At end game, if you're not in the correct position, you're going to die 100%. However if you position yourself right, you really have no reason for you to die. This is the main reason why I discourage purchasing Zhonya's Hourglass. If you have the positioning down, the next big thing during teamfights is targeting. To be honest I think this is the hardest part aside from the mechanical skill involved in playing Midalee. You must keep calm and find a target that will be affected the greatest by your spear. Don't just spam your spears just because it's off cooldown, there's still 2 seconds left before your spear comes off cooldown and you see enemy's Caitlyn making minimal movement during the fight, your spear is off cooldown, you press your q, you see the distance the spear will travel  and predict the destination of your spear and release. All in the matter of half a second.

Several people have asked me what 'role' does Midalee play at the end game mark? To be honest, you fall more on the support side. You NEVER want to be in catform during the fight unless you're getting focused, cleaning up, or escaping because your whole team is dead.

Who Am I? Back to Top

My name is Bischu, I've been playing Nidalee religiously ever since Season 1 and I consider myself one of the top Nidalee players. I've ended Season 2 with a top rating of 2780 with my most played as Nidalee and Katarina. I'd like to thank the players who helped me gain deeper knowledge of Nidalee: L1nk115, who is currently well known as the prophet of the competitive scene and my mentor who's taught me a lot of what I know today and Scarra for being Scarra.

Regarding Manamune/Muramana

Spears DO receive bonus damage from Muramana, however you need to take into account why AP Nidalee works in the first place. Nidalee's spears scales from AP and the damage ramps up to 250%. Having around 3000 MP late game with Nidalee and landing a spear with Muramana active proc'd will give you around 150 ish additional damage at MAX mana depending on the MR and also it consumed 3% of your aman which is the main reason why Muramana is such a bad item on Nidalee. 3% on 3k mana pool is 90 which is exactly the same mana required to throw another spear. So you're spending the potential MP to do additional 150 damage when you could be chucking another spear. Anyways yeah don't get Manamune/Muramana.
