Always take W at level 1 unless you're invading and have to level E to secure a kill.
It doesn't matter if you take Q or E at level 2, i usually take Q because it seems better for early clears.

I always max E because of the extra range you get from it and the reduced Cooldown. More knockups is just better for the team.

Some people will max W on Zac for fast clearing and sustained damage in fights. But Zacs power comes from Long range initiating and hard CC. The earlier you have max range E the better.

Maxing E also offer a big nuke whereas maxing W only offers sustained damage as i have already said above.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

See "author notes" for more details on trinkets.

Core Items

The safest Zac build - See below for situational items to fit into this build. Switch out Randuins / Iron solari if another team mate has built this.
I would always pick this item for Zac. Offers CDR health and Tenacity, all of which Zac benefits from nicely. Even if im fed early game i won't get the Spirit of the Spectral wraith because i like being a brick wall on Zac

Situational Items

Rylai's Crystal Scepter -Only buy this as a last lategame item. You're only really buying this item for the AP and HP since you don't need the extra slow.
Abyssal Scepter - A super good item mainly for snowballed games. Offers great damage and Magic pen. Also gives MR for when you're against a heavy MR lineup. Buy this when the enemy has a fed AP carry.
Spirit of the Spectral Wraith - Only get this item if you and your team are really far ahead early game. Since you're spending all of your money on AP and you'll become squishy and messing up can leave you vulnerable.
Zhonya's Hourglass - Mainly a snowball item. Is good against heavy AD teams but usually bought by TheOddOne for mid air poses - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlSIkjB1nmI
Only get this item if you've vs a full AD team who stack auto attacks.
Haunting Guise is a good mid game item for Zac but builds into Liandry's which isnt very good for Zac. Only build it if you up on the enemy team and need to spend gold for full build
Kinda a wasted item on Zac because you're paying for mana but its good vs auto attack teams.

Rylai's Crystal Scepter - A late game item to pick up if you're winning and want extra damage. The passive is wasted gold because Zac doesnt need it.

Since you're spending all of your money on AP and spellvamp you become squishy and messing up can leave you vulnerable.

Zhonya's Hourglass - Mainly a snowball item. Is good against heavy AD teams but usually bought by TheOddOne for mid air poses - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlSIkjB1nmI

Haunting Guise - A safe early game snowball item. Offers AP, Magic Pen and health. Great item to buy if you've good an early advantage.

Liandry's Torment - Basicly just finishing off the Haunting Guise, usually the last item you'd buy.

Trinkets

Sweeping Trinket (Recommended)

I recommend starting this item. Since Zac can use his E to reach brushes without going through the river he can scout to see if its warded and wait for the right time to go in.

On a team i would recommend always having this trinket on at least 1/2 people in the early game. In the Mid/Late game its situational and depends on the speed of the game and how its being played.

Warding Totem

Maybe change to this item if you have a lane getting ganked a lot. Providing extra vision can potentially save a life.

Scrying Orb

In the early game this item is only useful if you're invading or gaining early information on lanes and where the enemy jungler is starting.

In the Mid and Lategame this item becomes a lot better, i recommend having one person run the Scrying Orb (usually the playmaker as he will be involved in most skirmishes)
Having this item in the Mid and Lategame gives extra security and can save you from facechecking. This allows for safely scouting things like buffs, dragons and the Baron.

Level 1 Trinket wards vs invading junglers

Buffs are really secure in this patch as long as you use trinkets effectively.

If you're against a jungler which is known for invading such as Lee sin, Shaco and udyr for example ask for mid laner to drop a trinket ward on the opposite buff that you started at, you can repay him with your own trinket ward.

Sweeper trinkets are just straight up the best to go with mid game and late game

VS

Aatrox

Medium

Zac cant really trade with Aatrox. For Zac to do damage to Aatrox he needs to get close to him. Getting close to Aatrox is a bad idea for most junglers. Aatrox will out DPS Zac and sustain far better.

Aatrox can interupt Zacs E and chase him really easily because of this.

While Zac and Aatrox have similar passives Aatrox is far superior in a 1v1 fight. Aatrox can easily solo Zacs blobs and its made even easier by the fact that Aatrox will have smite to kill one of them.

How to play against Aatrox

As i said above, try not to trade 1v1 with Aatrox.
Help the team with wards and keep vision on the enemy wraiths. This is the best ward you can place. It gives you tons of information.

Build early Ninja Tabi. When counterganking Aatrox you'll want to put all your CC onto him to make him as useless as possible. You then have to rely on your team mates to kite him.

Popping Aatrox passive makes him useless until it comes back from cooldown.
Aatrox threat in ganks comes from his great ability to dive with little risk. While his passive is down he cant contest drake very easily and cant invade your jungle without risk of dying. So keep it warded!

VS

Amumu

Easy

Amumu is a pretty easy champion to play against and is outclassed by many other champions who do the same job but much better.
Zac is an example of this. Zac has far better AOE CC and a much easier and stronger engage.

Amummu's ultimate is very predictable and is easily avoided. Good awareness will allow you and your team to spread out and make Amumus ultimate as useless as possible.

If Amumu manages to get a good ult onto your team all you have to do is simply use your combo on their back like. Zacs CC combo is far superior to Amumus as Zac can reach and distrupt the entire enemy back line whereas Amummu only has a small hitbox when compared to Zacs

Zac also does more damage than Amummu but only marginally so don't go trying to kill him in his jungle.

ZacĀ  clears his jungle way better as he never runs out of mana whereas Aummu becomes oom very quickly.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Cho'Gath is a pretty strong pick.

Zac's has a better engage and stronger CC than Cho'Gath which makes Zac a bigger threat.

Cho is pretty simple to jungle against. keep the map warded and anti gank whenever you can. Zac has stronger ganks than Cho so if a lane is even you will usually come out of the counter gank on top.

Lategame Cho will become a huge monster stacking HP, MR and Armor.

Keep Cho off your Backline and help them kite him. Protecting carries is easy for Zac with his huge CC. Zac can switch focus and CC many enemies while Cho can only Rupture and silence a small area.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Zac Pretty much outclasses Mundo in all areas.

Mundo is considered Trash tier.

Play the game well and you will be a much bigger threat than mundo at all stages of the game.

VS

Elise

Hard

Elise is a really hard matchup for Zac.

She can out damage him in all stages of the game and can avoid his CC. She can kite Zac and make him useless in 1v1 fights.

Elise will bully you in your own jungle and try to take all camps away from you. She can also do early and safe dragons because of her spiderlings.

If you can keep up with Elise and make it through the early stages of the game you'll be fine. When Zac gets his Spirit Vissage things become a little easier for him.

VS

Evelynn

Medium

In the 3.14 patch Eve is one of the champions i have started to ban.

She is a really big pain with the pink ward changes. Ward her wraiths so you know rough where she is. Deep wards are the real only way to get vision on her now.

Since you build a lot of MR Mid/Lategame you'll outscale her and be able to deal with her in fight pretty easiy and safely.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

Fiddle is a very squishy jungler and until he has Zhonya's hes not a big threat to Zac. Zac has a lot of Tenacity so fears and silences doesn't effect him very much

Once Fiddle is CC'ed hes pretty much dead.

Fiddles biggest threat comes from ganking so make sure your team ward up the map.

VS

Hecarim

Medium

Hecarim can clear really fast which means he can invade really easily. He can out damage Zac and escape really easily with him Movement speed.

Its really dangerous to do Dragon/Baron vs a Hec because he can easily steal with his ult/smite. His ult is a fear so you'll be unable to smite.

When playing against Hec just play safe, dont over extend. Help counter gank and always ward your jungle entrances.

Play safe and you'll be able to punish him in teamfights once he's used him combo.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

J4 is one of the strongest junglers, he has early game burst and amazingly easy CC.

His threats come from ganks. He'll make lanes burn their summoners then return 1 minute later.

All you can do is play safely and keep ganking lanes.

J4 won't invade your jungle because he's really slow at clearing.

VS

Olaf

Hard

Olaf has been really strong since the 3.13 patch.

He will bully you early game and wreck you in trades.

At level 6 he'll avoid all your CC and come out on top in small skirmishes.

In 1v1 trades he'll make you use your E defensively to escape and if you don't he'll chase you down and melt you.

First Clears Back to Top

3.14 (New jungle) Route

Since you don't get level 3 from 2 buffs you have to do a 3rd camp or sit in a brush and leash xp until you hit level 3.

With the changes to smite cooldown changes you can smite both buffs.
Since smite is on a 40 second Cooldown you can do a few viable jungle starts.
There are many viable first clears, below i have listen 2 which i do.

Blue Team

Red smiteless (requires decent pull from bot lane)
SMITE wraiths
Wolves
SMITE Blue
(LEVEL 3) (250/480XP till level 4)

Or

SMITE Red
SMITE Blue
Wraith
(LEVEL 3) (100/480 till level 4)

Purple Team
