Summoner Spells Back to Top

Nothing fancy, just the typical Summoner spells. 14.png can be cast while channeling your ult. Take 1.png when the enemy bot lane has strong hard CC, such as with 67_icon_64.png and 44_icon_64.png.

Runes Back to Top

  • 9x
+0.95 attack damage Greater Mark of Attack Damage
  • 9x
+1.34 magic resist Greater Glyph of Magic Resist
  • 9x
+1 armor Greater Seal of Armor
  • 3x
+2.25 attack damage Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage

This is a standard AD rune page. It gives around 15 Physical Damage with 13 Armor and 12 Magic Resist. The Damage is self-explanatory and the Armor and Magic Resist help with Malzahar's squishyness.

Alternative: Armor Penetration rune page. Blues, Yellows, and Quints will be the same, but switch six of the Reds to flat Armor pen marks. The reason for this setup is that it gives the same Armor pen as using three Armor pen Quints, while giving more Physical Damage. This is because two Armor pen Reds (1.28) are equal to one Armor pen Quint (2.56).

Benefits of each:

  1. The 15 Physical Damage page helps a lot with last hitting. This page will also provide more damage early game for you and your Voidlings (they have a 1.0 scaling with your bonus AD).
  2. The Armor pen page will provide more damage late game. Additionally, the armor pen is also added to your Voidlings.
I generally use the standard AD page because it's better for early game and AD Malzahar falls off late game.

Utility: 0

Typical ADC offensive page with some small alterations. This AD Malzahar guide focuses on flat damage and doesn't have any crit because Voidlings cannot crit. The usual two points in Lethality and one point in Frenzy were moved to the fourth point in Fury and two points in Mental Force.

Another option is to grab the Mana Regen and Mana per level points in Utility instead of Defense. However, Malzahar is pretty squishy so the defense is needed early game.

Ability Skill Order:

Level 1 Ability - Call of the Void (Q)

Max First - Malefic Visions (E)

Max Second - Call of the Void (Q)

Max Last - Null Zone (W)

Always Get - Nether Grasp (R)

TL;DR - R > E > Q > W

Ability Explanations:

Call of the Void (Q) - This ability does damage and silences all enemies in a line. It casts after 0.5 seconds. The silence is great in teamfights and also helps stop early aggression from enemies. Get this ability at level one to build up charges for your Voidling. Voidlings are summoned after every 4th spell.

Null Zone (W) - A ground AOE that does %Health damage to enemies standing in it. This ability is not particularly useful on AD Malzahar. It can add some extra damage if you manage to ult the enemy in the pool, but it is easy to avoid without an ult. Null Zone isn't completely terrible at rank one because it does %HP damage.

Malefic Visions (E) - A targeted DOT that returns mana when the target dies. It also bounces to a nearby enemy when the target dies. This ability will help significantly with mana problems in lane. Additionally, Voidlings prioritize enemies marked with Malefic Visions, so use this to get some extra harass.

Nether Grasp (R) - This skill is a single target damaging suppress, meaning the enemy cannot do ANYTHING* while it's being channeled. They can't even use summoner spells (that's right, no 1.png). This spell is what brings 90_icon_64.png ahead in a 1v1 situation. It will lock the enemy in place while your Voidlings destroy them.

*However, there are certain champs that can break the suppress (41_icon_64.png orange, 12_icon_64.png ult), and 3140_32.png will also break the suppress.

Build Order:

Start with 1001_32.png and three 2003_32.png because 90_icon_64.png is squishy. If you have a support 16_icon_64.png, then start 1055_32.png.

If you get an early kill or you're losing lane, grab one or two 1055_32.png.

Aim for 3004_32.png as your first item. This will allow you to build up the mana for it to transform into Muramana (not listed on LoLKing for some reason).

Get 3134_32.png next and build it into 3071_32.png. It is also possible to get 3134_32.png before 3004_32.png for a stronger laning phase.

3072_32.png is built late game because 90_icon_64.png doesn't attack that fast, and life steal doesn't apply to his Voidlings.

Finally, get 3139_32.png as a defensive item (buy 3140_32.png earlier if the enemy team has too much CC).

Grab 3006_32.png early on and upgrade to 3254_32.png late game.

In the event of a really long game, just buy another 3072_32.png or a 3031_32.png as your last item. This guide is meant for strong aggressive team comps that don't plan on reaching late game.

Item Explanations:

3004_32.png This item is built mainly for the mana regen while also adding a bit of damage. Once it transforms to Muramana, the toggle can add a good chunk of damage to your auto attacks.

3071_32.png Everything AD Malzahar needs. Black Cleaver synergizes extremely well with Voidlings because they benefit from both the damage and Armor pen. The Voidlings also apply the %Armor reduction per hit!

3035_32.png A cheaper alternative for 3071_32.png. Get this if you are behind in gold, or if the other team is heavily stacking armor.

3072_32.png Pure damage for more Voidling destruction. Very easy to farm up with Malefic Visions.

3139_32.png A great defensive item that also adds some damage. The cleanse is better than an item like 3026_32.png. This is because 90_icon_64.png needs to be able to summon Voidlings to be effective. The enemy team can easily kill 90_icon_64.png again when he revives and he won't have time to do anything.

3254_32.png The flat movement speed enhancement is probably the best option. 3251_32.png can be helpful because they increase the movement speed of your Voidlings. However, it is generally better for a tank to get these because they are in the front and can initiate teamfights.

Matchups Back to Top

Click on a champion below to see the author's notes on that particular matchup.

  • Ashe
    Medium
  • Blitzcrank
    Easy
  • Caitlyn
    Hard
  • Graves
    Medium

VS

Ashe

Medium

Ashe is okay at CSing under tower. The biggest problem with Ashe is her ult. It is similar in function to Malzahar's ult and can allow her to kill you first.

VS

Blitzcrank

Easy

Ideally, Blitzcrank shouldn't be a problem at all because you can block his Rocket Grabs with your Voidlings. However, it's not possible to always have a Voidling up and Blitzcrank can still try to grab your support. Cast Malefic Visions on him when you have a Voidling to make sure that he can't grab you (the Voidling will run towards him and try to attack him, which will block any grabs).

VS

Caitlyn

Hard

Caitlyn is a pretty strong counter to AD Malzahar. She has superior range and poke and can clear waves at a decent rate. She can also kite your Voidlings and kill them for extra gold.

VS

Graves

Medium

Graves is very good at CSing under tower. This means that Malzahar's aggressive pushing won't be very effective. However, Graves also has a short attack range, allowing Malzahar to trade evenly.

Additional Information Back to Top

Voidlings

These scuttling little creatures are the bread and butter of AD Malzahar. They will do a surprising amount of damage if an enemy is foolish enough to tank the damage. Here is some information on how they think.

Priority - Voidlings choose their targets based on the following:

  1. Enemy under the effects of Nether Grasp.
  2. Enemy marked by the most recent cast of Malefic Visions.
  3. Enemy that Malzahar is attacking.
Tips and Tricks -
  • Voidlings can be used to block lethal skillshots like 53_icon_64.png Rocket Grab.
  • You can have up to three Voidlings at the same time if you have max cooldown reduction.
  • Have someone on your team get 3251_32.png to speed up your Voidlings.
  • Voidlings will "proc" the %Armor debuff from Black Cleaver.
Note: When you click on the Voidling, you will not see the bonus AD. However, just look at how much damage they do when you have a couple items, and it'll be obvious that the scaling is working.

Team Comp

AD Malzahar is most effective with an aggressive early game team comp. This is because Malzahar is not as useful late game and the lack of a true ADC will start to show. AD Malzahar is very good at split pushing and his ult almost guarantees a kill when roaming. Assassin type champions work very well with Malzahar because they are free to attack the target when Malzahar ults.

Supports

90_icon_64.png needs a support that can keep him alive and also CC the enemy so the Voidlings can do damage. Some good champions would be 44_icon_64.png, 37_icon_64.png, and 40_icon_64.png. The mana from 16_icon_64.png Infuse is amazing for 90_icon_64.png. It allows him to summon more Voidlings than usual and constantly push his lane. However, 16_icon_64.png is not the best choice for an aggressive early game team comp.

Laning

  • At the start of the game, cast Call of the Void (Q) three times to have a Voidling ready on your next spell.
  • Do not spam your spells. You will run out of mana fast.
  • Hit the minions a couple times to make sure they will die, and then use Malefic Visions (E) to regain mana.
  • To harass, use Malefic Visons on the enemy ADC when they move in to CS. Make sure you either summon a Voidling with this cast, or you already have one up.
  • Voidlings will Frenzy after 14 seconds. You can time your aggression based on this.
  • After you have some levels, you can start to push the lane aggressively and force the enemy to CS under tower. Make sure you have wards to know when you are getting ganked.

Example

Here is a bad example of AD Malzahar. Malefic Visions was still on a minion so the Voidling wasn't attacking 107_icon_64.png. With the Voidling damage, I would have killed 107_icon_64.png much faster and lived with a lot more health.
