Summoner Spells Back to Top

14.png
Ignite is a must have on Riven. It gives you more lane dominance ( even though Riven is pretty lane dominant ). It also reduces the healing of Champions which is pretty nice ( f.e. Irelia, Rengar, etc )

4.png
For the 2nd summonerspell you should consider in 8 out of 10 cases flash. It gives you the opportunity to escape over walls, engage ( flash -> w ) or even dodge a skillshot ( f.e. Ashe Arrow ).

7.png
In the other cases you can take heal instead of flash. When you know, that you are able to win a 2v1 you can take heal instead of flash.

12.png
Teleport is really rare on Riven, because she mainly needs ignite to burst someone down!
Just run teleport when you know that your enemy is easy to shutdown AND your team will start to force objectives!

Marks

Here are 2 available options for you. You can take AD ( = attack damage ) runes to maximize your early game damage and it's way easier to last hit with it or you take ArP ( = armor penetration ) runes to maxzimize your mid/late game damage. I prefer in 9/10 cases the 2nd variety.
P.s. when you want to do the double golems, take flat AD marks

Seals

I just consider armor runes for a real option ( on seals ) even though you have to lane maybe against an AP carry. They can harass you with AA ( = autoattacks ) or you get ganked ( atm most junglers deal mostly physical damage ).

Glyphs

Flat MR ( = magic resist ) or MR per level runes are pretty standard for top laners. When there is no AP damage in the enemy team, take CDR ( = cooldown reduction ) runes.

Quintessences

Take AD runes for Quints. Those give you a lot of AD what you'll need because you are an AD caster. Don't take ArP Quints, they don't scale pretty good.

All in all this is a pretty balanced rune setup when you want to maximize your damage but still having a bit of defense.

Utility: 0

Normally I take a 19-11-0 mastery page.
This setup gives you a lot of AD, ArP, CDR, health and def-stats so you can trade pretty well with the enemy in lane and have a chunk of damage in lategame. When you are on purple side and want to do golems/wolves ( solo ) take 2 points in "Tough Skin" except of armor or MR.

Just go for a 21-9-0 mastery page when you know, that you will rape your enemy.

In some cases you can also run a 9-21-0 mastery page; I won't recommend this a lot.

Never go for a X-X-21 Mastery Page on Riven, it's not worth it.

How to skill?

There are technically 3 ways how you could skill Riven till level 3:

  • Q -> E -> W
A lot of utility, go for this when you want to do safe trades and fear early ganks (pretty good with a CDR build)
  • Q -> W -> E
Getting Q and W at level 2 provides you with a lot of burst
  • E -> Q -> W
Safest start, go for this when you are playing against a hard lane matchup

After those 3 levels, there are still 3 more ways to max your spells:

  • R > Q > W > E
Max Q first for a lot of damage, especially when you are dominating the lane
  • R > W > Q > E
Max W first when you just want to do short trades
  • R > E > Q > W
Max E first for "safe" laning

Why do I max Q over W?

Q at 1: 30 - 60 - 90 ( up to 3 uses )
W at 1: 50
Difference: You deal 20 damage less with 1 Q, 10 damage more with 2 Qs and 40 damage more with 3 Qs

Q at 2: 55 - 110 - 165
W at 2: 80
Difference: You deal 25 damage less with 1 Q, 30 damage more with 2 Qs and 85 damage more with 3 Qs

Q at 3: 80 - 160 - 240
W at 3: 110
Difference: You deal 30 damage less with 1 Q, 50 damage more with 2 Qs and 130 damage more with 3 Qs

Q at 4: 105 - 210 - 315
W at 4: 140
Difference: You deal 35 damage less with 1 Q, 70 damage more with 2 Qs and 175 damage more with 3 Qs

Q at 5: 130 - 260 - 390
W at 5: 170
Difference: You deal 40 damage less with 1 Q, 90 damage more with 2 Qs and 220 damage more with 3 Qs

But the cooldown of the W is decreasing by 1 for every point you put into W.

All in all you can say that maxxing Q is by far better when you are able to use at least 2 Qs, what is generally the case; but if you just want to play really safe or do short trades I would still max W first.

Starting Items

  • Start with 2037_32.png + 3x 2003_32.png against really hard matchups ( f.e. Darius )
  • Start with 1036_32.png + 2x 2003_32.png when you want to shutdown an easy - medium matchup
  • Start with 1006_32.png + 2x 2044_32.png + 3x 2003_32.png for safe laning
  • Start with 1029_32.png + 5x 2003_32.png when you consider doing the golems and the enemy laner has a pretty strong AD damage/harass in lane ( f.e. GP )
  • Start with 1054_32.png + 1x 2003_32.png against heavy poke (f.e. against an AD Carry top)

Core Items

  • Never ever forget to ward your lane with a 2044_32.png, so you won't get ganked; you can also buy 2043_32.png to clear the vision of the enemy laner, so your jungler has the possibility to gank your lane successfully
  • Buy at least one or two 1055_32.png  because they are the only source for health ( except "Black Cleaver" ) and they give you a lot of lane dominance
  • Try to get a 3134_32.png asap ( AD, CDR, ArP is all what you want )
  • Then you should buy a 3072_32.png, you scale really good with AD
  • After that consider building a 3035_32.png or a 3071_32.png to deal a lot of damage ( consider building a "Black Cleaver" over a "Last Whisper", when your team has a ton of physical/AD damage )
  • Now you need a 3026_32.png so you can jump in to burst someone and after your downtime you still have enough damage to kill everyone

Situational Items

Which boots should I buy when, when should I upgrade them?
  • Buy 3047_32.png against heavy AD damage or AA harass ( f.e. Nidalee )
  • Buy 3111_32.png against a lot of CC or magic damage ( f.e. double AP )
  • Buy 3158_32.png when you are winning your lane pretty hard or for a CDR orientaded build
Buy a boots upgrade ( tier 3 ) when you are nearly fullbuild ( except homeguard )
  • 3260_32.png3265_32.png3275_32.png in other words Homeguard; take those when you want to go fast from your base to lane or you have to defend your base pretty fast ( f.e. 2 inhibs are down )
  • 3262_32.png3267_32.png3277_32.png in other words Furor; those are pretty standard when you are aiming for long combos
  • 3264_32.png3269_32.png3279_32.png in other words Alacrity; standard upgrade

Situational items ~
  • Buy a 3022_32.png when you need more health ( I won't recommend Frozen Mallet a lot )
  • Buy a 3035_32.png when the enemy team is building a lot of armor and you aim for more damage
  • Buy a 3074_32.png when you need more burst and more sustain
  • Buy a 3083_32.png when you need to be more tanky and need more health
  • Buy a 3139_32.png when the enemy team has a lot of CC
  • Buy a 3156_32.png when the enemy team has a lot of AP burst damage
  • Buy a 3143_32.png when the enemy team is relying mostly on AAs, f.e. double ADC or a fed ADC
  • Buy a 3153_32.png when you duel a lot, need sustain and more chase power

VS

Akali

Easy

- Try to harass when you reach level 3 with a short harass combo, but evade to push your lane

- At level 6 you are able to "onecombo" her ( sometimes you need your ignite for this! )

- Don't forget to have a pink ward with you when you want to onecombo her.

- Try to minimize the poke damage from Akalis Q with your Shield ( = E spell ).

- When she jumps on you, you have 2 options:

  • when you aren't strong enough to burst her, go for a W -> Q combo and jump away
  • when you have a potential strong burst ( normally when you get your ult ), go for a R -> W -> Q ... combo

Possible start items:1036_32.png+ 2x2003_32.pngOR1001_32.png+ 3x2003_32.png

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

- Cho'Gath has a pretty high sustain and he can easily outpush you in early with his E, so there is no reason to fight; your only aim is farming until 6 and get some items.

- When you reach level 6 start trading with Cho and when he has ~70% HP you should be able to "onecombo" him ( normally you need your ignite for this! )

- Take care in teamfights, Cho can easily interrupt your combo with his silence or rupture, find a smart way to engage in a teamfight.

Possible start items:1001_32.png+ 3x2003_32.png

VS

Darius

Hard

- Consider taking an early point into your shield ( = E spell ) so you can farm safely.

- If Darius grabs you, just jump away and don't fight, he can outdamage you easily.

- Your only aim is farming until 6 and get some items, so you can start trading with him.

- At level 6 you are able to "onecombo" him but he is also able to onecombo you, so find a smart way to engage, f.e. when Darius just missed his Q ( you really need your ignite for this! )

- Never chase Darius except you are really, really far ahead, he can easily kite and outdamage you with his Q, W and passive.

Possible start items:1029_32.png+ 5x2003_32.pngOR1001_32.png+ 3x2003_32.png

- At level 6 you are able to "onecombo" ( sometimes you need your ignite for this! )

- Try to dodge Dianas Q with your Shield ( = E spell ).

- When she jumps on you, you have 2 options:

  • when you aren't strong enough to burst her, go for a W -> Q combo and jump away

Elise

Medium

- Consider taking an early point into you shield ( = E spell )

- Try to harass when you reach level 3 with a short harass combo, but evade to push your lane.

- Elise has no real sustain so try to harass her as much as possible until you hit level 6.

- At level 6 you are able to "onecombo" her ( sometimes you need your ignite for this! )

- Try to minimize the poke damage from Elises Q with your Shield ( = E spell ).

- When she jumps on you, you have 2 options:

  • when you aren't strong enough to burst her, go for a W -> Q combo and jump away
  • when you have a potential strong burst ( normally when you get your ult ), go for a R -> W -> Q ... combo

Possible start items:1001_32.png+ 3x2003_32.png

VS

Fiora

Medium

Pretty equal matchup.

- Try to harass when you reach level 3 with a short harass combo, but evade to push your lane
- Fiora has no real escape, ask your jungler for an early gank
- At level 6 you are able to "onecombo" her ( sometimes you need your ignite for this! ) take care that she doesn't dodge your ult damage with her ult.

- Never AA Fiora when she used her W, it can hurt a lot.
- When she jumps on you, you have 2 options:
  • when you aren't strong enough to burst her, go for a W -> Q combo and jump away
  • when you have a potential strong burst ( normally when you get your ult ), go for a R -> W -> Q ... combo

Possible start items:1001_32.png+ 3x2003_32.pngOR ( only with golems )1029_32.png+ 5x2003_32.png

VS

Easy

- Try to harass when you reach level 3 with a short harass combo, but evade to push your lane.

- At level 6 you are able to "onecombo" him ( sometimes you need your ignite for this! )

- Take care when you want to burst Fizz, he can easily dodge your ult damage or your combo with his jumps.

- When he jumps on you, you have 2 options:

  • when you aren't strong enough to burst him, go for a W -> Q combo and jump away
  • when you have a potential strong burst ( normally when you get your ult ), go for a R -> W -> Q ... combo

Possible start items:1036_32.png+ 2x2003_32.pngOR1001_32.png+ 3x2003_32.png

VS

Gangplank

Medium

- Consider taking an early point into your shield ( = E spell ) so you can farm safely

- Your only aim is farming until 6 and get some items, so you can start trading with him.

- At level 6 you are able to "onecombo" him ( sometimes you need your ignite for this! )

- Stay in the brush in early and just go out, when you want to take a CS, so Gangplank isn't able to poke you often.

- Try to minimize the poke damage from Gangplanks Q with your Shield ( = E spell ).

Possible start items:1001_32.png+ 3x2003_32.pngOR1029_32.png+ 5x2003_32.png

VS

Garen

Hard

- Consider taking an early point into your shield ( = E spell ) so you can farm safely

- Ask your jungler for early ganks, when your jungler decides to go top bait Garens Q before you both engage.

- Your only aim is farming until 6 and get some items, so you can start trading with him.

- At level 6 you should be pretty equal, take care that you don't do your full combo when Garen has his shield up, else you should win.

- Try to minimize the Garens Q damage and avoide the silence with your Shield ( = E spell ).

Possible start items:1029_32.png+ 5x2003_32.pngOR1001_32.png+ 3x2003_32.png

- After 6, when you are fighting with Heca don't go for long exchanges, because Heca has a good sustain with his W.

- When he jumps on you, you have 2 options:

  • when you aren't strong enough to burst him, go for a W -> Q combo and jump away
  • when you have a potential strong burst ( normally when you get your ult ), go for a R -> W -> Q ... combo

Possible start items:1036_32.png+ 2x2003_32.pngOR1001_32.png+ 3x2003_32.png

Medium

- Consider taking an early point into your shield ( = E spell ) so you can farm without taking any damage.
- Farm as much as possible until level 5.

- When she jumps on you, you have 2 options:
  • when you aren't strong enough to burst her, go for a W -> Q combo and jump away

- Consider taking an early point into your shield ( = E spell ) so you can farm better.
- Your only aim is farming until mid game, you should be stronger in teamfights.
- Never play agressive except you see a perfect opportunity to engage on Jayce ( only do that when you have your ult, so past leve 6 )

- Try to minimize the poke damage from Jayces E- > Q combo with your Shield ( = E spell ).
- When he jumps on you, you have 2 options:

Early Game - Lane Phase Back to Top

In my opinion the early laning phase is between level 1 and 8.

On blue side

When your jungler starts at red and is willing to let you do the wolves, do them! You get a damn fast level 2 and can start playing really agressive.

Here is a video on "How to do wolves in S3 as Riven" ( I make a difference between starting with boots or cloth armor, you have to take AD runes to do golems properly )

When you don't take the wolves; never push your lane or try to play agressive in early.

You should bear in mind that the enemy jungler starts in 9/10 cases at blue buff and level 3 ganks you top; so when the enemy laner plays agressive you know what's going on.

At the moment you reach level 6, you have generally the ability to burst someone from ~75% to 0 down. ( take care if they have summoner heal or a spellbased heal )

On purple side

When you play against an AD top laner, consider taking golems at level 1, so you can get a fast level 2 and maybe first blood him. ( remember you lose 2 health pots when you want to do the golems )

Here is a Video on "How to do golems in S3 as Riven" ( here you can start with boots or cloth armor, what is not really needed, as you can see you can also consider starting with ArP runes instead of AD runes )

When you are laning against an AP top laner ( f.e. Vladmimir ), you can also consider starting at golems ( you still lose 2 health pots ), so you just have 1 health pot left. You have to go really agressive at level 2 and try to harass him as hard as possible or even first blood him.

When you don't take golems, don't push your lane in early! Anyways you should try to play agressive in early ( ca. at level 3 ), because your damage potential is very high and you still have a spell ( E ) to jump away if you fail your combo. Else just farm yourself up, you scale incredibly good with items.

At level 6 or 7 your goal is to trade with him in beginning and when your cooldowns are up, go all in because Rivens burst is strong. You should be able to burst someone from ~75% to 0.

Here is an example video on how you can do combos as Riven.

Mid Game - Lane Phase / Roam Back to Top

In my opinion the mid game phase is between level 9 and 14.

On blue side

Try to farm until late game, take the enemies tower and try to force dragons in a 5v4.
When you know that the junglers red buff is up, you can group with your jungler invade him and take it.

On purple side

There are 2 situations in which you can be:

  • You win your lane
Try to force Dragons, start roaming to help your mid laner, push the enemy laner to take your golems ( take care that he isn't able to freeze the creepwave ) and take the enemy tower when you see no opportunity to take else an adventage, else just farm up as much as possible; your AD scallings are strong

  • You are equal or lose in lane
Farm, farm and farm. Take the golems as often as possible so you can outgold the enemy laner. Try to push your lane ( you can buy f.e. an early Tiamat for that ) and try to force Dragons but don't let your tower fall, because losing the 1st tower to nothing at purple side is pretty shitty when the enemy team has a good baron team.

Late Game - Teamfighting Back to Top

In my opinion late game phase is between level 15 and 18.
At this point you should have at least the 1st core items + some of the 2nd core!

Start grouping with your team and don't go solo, your teamfighting potential should be really strong with Riven. Start forcing important objectives ( Baron and Inhibitor ), take every Dragon and outer turret you can and don't forget to ward baron, it's mostly your job! ( Except you are full equipped )

When you have something with a good engage in team ( f.e. Amumu Q or flash R, Ashe R, etc ) don't go in first, let them engage. Try to jump in with E and get to the carries with your Q, you should be able to burst them easily, else try to kill the first thing you see ( except a tank ). Don't worry about yourself in front with nearly only AD items, when you have a GA you can just go all in and burst everyone after your downtime. ( take care that your team follows you )

When you don't have a good engage, try to force something and engage with a counterengage when they want to contest the objective you force ( Baron is a really good objective which you should force ), jump in with E -> Q and try to deal as much AOE damage as possible ( normally they are grouped ).

Warding Spots Back to Top

Blue Side

SR Map Warding - top lane, blue side.jpg
1. Pretty standard and also most important warding spot, it covers the jungle entrance and it's also pretty good against junglers like 56_icon_64.png9_icon_64.png64_icon_64.png , 35_icon_64.png, etc, who are able to jump over walls
2. When you are planning to steal the red buff ( with or without the jungler )
3. Only when you are getting pushed and fear a gank from the river
4. Only when the enemy is starting to push and, even more important, you fear a lane gank
5. When your first tower is down or the enemy is able to kill Baron

Purple Side

SR Map Warding - top lane, purple side.j
1. Pretty standard and also most important warding spot, this spot covers the jungle entrance and it's also essential, when the enemy team is able to kill baron
2. When you are planning to steal the blue buff ( with or without the jungler )
3. When your first tower is down and you just want to farm
4. Only when the enemy is starting to push and, even more important, you fear a lane gank
5. + 6. This spot is pretty good against junglers like 56_icon_64.png9_icon_64.png64_icon_64.png , 35_icon_64.png, etc, who are able to jump over walls.

Riven Changelog Back to Top

17.01.2013 - Here are the changes.

  • Base health regen reduced to 6 from 10.4 AND Health regen per level reduced to 0.5 from 0.9
Generally you'll have a harder time against hard poke/harass lanes ( f.e. Pantheon, Garen ), maybe you have to buy a vamp scepter before you get a brutalizer.
  • Valor - Shield amount increased to 70/100/130/160/190 from 60/90/120/150/180
I guess this change should compensate the health regen nerf, it will allow you to trade more effectively.
  • Blade of the Exile - Cooldown increased to 110/80/50 seconds from 75/60/45
This nerf is ok, Rivens cooldown was way too low for the stats/effects it provides.

I don't think those changes affect Rivens matchups, except that you'll have a harder time against strong poke/harass lanes because you'll have a pretty weak sustain in lane until you get lifesteal items.
