QUINT%20AP.png Quints

Armor + Attack Damage

  • The nerfs to armor seals made armor reds and quints much better.
  • 1 Armor quints gives you 4 armor, you can take 2 for exactly as much armor you would have with old armor seals but I prefer this for higher AD.

MARK%20MAGIC%20PEN.png Marks

Armor Penetration

  • Since you'll be using your Q more than anything, for both last hits and harass.
  • Scales better into late game than completely stacking AD.
  • Since Zed's W at max passively gives 25% bonus AD at max, armor pen is better.

GLYPH%20MAGIC%20RESIST.png Glyphs

Flat/Scaling Magic Resist

  • I use scaling MR mostly since they buffed it to +27 recently.
  • Standard bruiser choice.
  • Since you'll be going balls deep in team fights sometimes, this is worth the investment.

SEAL%20OF%20MANA%20REGEN.png Seals

Health per level

  • Since the nerf to armor seals, this is currently really strong.

Offense - 21 points

The masteries are very effective on Zed, mainly spell weaving from Zed's ult combo which includes 3 or even 4 spells if you hit both shurikens and two auto attacks which in turn increase his ults "pop" damage by a minimum of 2% or 3% if the enemy did not flash. I take 1 point in percentage attack damage (2% to be exact) instead of 1.25% CDR because 2% is a decent number for 1 point, putting more into the skill only increases by 1.5% after that.

Defense - 9 points

These are really strong on AD casters with the improved damage reduction from champion basic attacks and the 3% extra hp.

Skill Order: zed r.png R - zed q.png Q - zed e.png E - zed w.png W

  • Max R first for reduced cooldown and increased damage on your ultimate.
  • Max Q next for ranged damage and last hitting.
  • Max E next for short ranged damage and a slow.
  • Max W last for reduced cooldown on your gap closer / escape.

You can max E first if you want

zed p.jpg Contempt for the weak

Whenever Zed autoattacks an enemy below 50% health, he deals an additional 6 / 8 / 10% of their maximum health as magic damage. This effect cannot occur on the same target more than once every 10 seconds.

zed%20q.png  Razor Shuriken

Zed and his shadows throw their shurikens, each dealing physical damage to the first enemy they pass through and a lesser amount to enemies thereafter.

Living Shadow: Additional shurikens striking the same enemy deal 50% damage and restore energy.

zed%20w.png Living Shadow

Passive: Zed's bonus attack damage is increased by a percentage.

Active: Zed's shadow dashes forward, remaining in place for 4 seconds. Reactivating this ability will cause Zed to switch positions with this shadow.

Zed's shadow will mimic his basic abilities. If both strike the same target Zed regains some energy. Energy can only be restored once per mimicked ability.

zed%20e.png Shadow Slash

Active: Zed and his shadows create a burst of shadow, dealing physical damage to nearby enemies.

Zed's slash reduces the cooldown of Living Shadow by 1 second for each enemy struck. His shadows' slashes slow enemies for 1.5 seconds.

Living Shadow: Overlapping Shadow Slashes striking the same enemy deal no additional damage but will incur an increased slow and restore energy.

zed%20r.png Death Mark

Active: Zed becomes untargetable and dashes to target enemy champion. Upon arrival, he marks the target for death and spawns a living shadow behind the target. This shadow lasts 4 seconds and mimics Zed's abilities. Reactivating Death Mark will cause Zed to switch positions with this shadow.

After 3 seconds, the mark will detonate, dealing physical damage equal to 100% of Zed's attack damage plus a percentage of all magic and physical damage dealt to the target by Zed and his shadows while the mark was active.

Doran's items and Longsword are the most common so they don't need much explanation.

Boots 4 Pots1001_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png

  • Boots give you the mobility needed to escape early ganks, respond to invades in the enemy jungle and to effectively zone control.
  • Four potions allow you to sustain in lane longer resulting in more farm and more experience.
  • Against champions like Karthus or Orianna the extra speed helps dodge skills.

Cloth Armor

1029_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2044_32.png   or  1029_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png

  • If you're against something like a purple side lee sin jungle, or a harder matchup like pantheon.
  • Gives you great sustain along with a ward for a safe early laning phase.
  • if you decide to buy a ward, wait in the base for the 3rd pot.

Core

1001_32.png3134_32.png3144_32.png

  • Gives you increased damage as well cooldown reduction.
  • I almost always get a  3153_32.png after.

Situational

3155_32.png - A great item against AP based matchups.

3269_32.png - These are the upgraded boots I prefer on Zed currently. The additional movement speed helps escaping, catching, juking, and overall positioning. An alternative is boots of mobility which allow Zed to get in ult range easily without blowing flash or w.

3026_32.png - I either get this after 3072_32.png or my 3071_32.png depending on if I'm getting focused down or not. It's a great item on Zed because after he revives he can still do tons of damage.

3072_32.png - Great item for increasing your burst damage. You can get this right after your 3134_32.png or 3071_32.png. You could also choose to get a 3026_32.png instead and delay your 3072_32.png if you feel you're getting focused in team fights and don't need damage.

3031_32.png - A great item for increasing your overall damage. I much prefer going defensive items after getting key damage items such as 3134_32.png3153_32.png and 3072_32.png. You can try to fit this item into your build if you need more damage.

3035_32.png - Great item to get whatsoever and should be your third core item in most situations after 3134_32.png and 3153_32.png.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

  • For this I would max E and not actually trade with Aatrox until level 6.
  • After that you should win all in's and his passive shouldn't be much of a problem
  • Try dodging his Q with your W

VS

Akali

Easy

  • Hexdrinker rush is a game winner here.
  • If you engage with your ultimate when her shroud is off cooldown, she can outplay you hard.
  • Grab a pink ward once you hit 6, if she tries to all in you she should die if shes visible.

VS

Annie

Hard

  • Yes Annie top has been gaining popularity recently to counter some matchups.
  • You should probably Max Q and try to avoid her stun
  • When you ult her, should probably press R again ASAP because most likely Annie will ult your face right after you ult

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

  • Try and cheese him at level 2-3
  • At 6 you have to harass him and kill him before he starts getting feast stacks.
  • This lane is hard because he can silence you right after you ult potentially nullifying your combo.

VS

Darius

Medium

  • There's no reason for you to eat his Q's as you can farm from a safe distance.
  • If he grabs you in, use your W quickly to get away and then press E so your shadow can slow him.
  • it's only a harder matchup because unless you outplay him, you'll trade kills at best with your ult.

VS

Diana

Medium

  • This matchup depends on whoevers ignite is up and if Zed has ult or not
  • I would probably Max E and buy lifesteal early

VS

Elise

Hard

  • Her Q isn't a skillshot and does more damage than yours.
  • She can E right after you ult and completely avoid your combo.
  • She has spider sustain to add to your disadvantage.

VS

Fiora

Easy

  • She has to dash to you to do damage no matter what, all you do is dash away and press E to slow with your shadow left behind.
  • If she's good she'll ult right after you use yours, but she has to spawn on top of you once its done and you still have enough time to pull off your combo.

VS

Fizz

Hard

  • The most painful matchup for Zed, A champ with a short cooldown Zhonyas, 2 dashes, ability to trade with auto attacks, and a strong damage ult.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

  • If he maxes Q, just trade with him when he uses it to farm.
  • If he maxes W, its still an easy lane as he is limited by mana.
  • If he maxes E, he has to get in melee range to trade effectively, and once again you can just dash away and slow with your shadow left behind.

VS

Garen

Hard

  • Its hard to kill him because hes so tanky and has natural sustain.
  • When he tries to run at you, walk away or if in a bad position use your dash and slow with your shadow. You should never get hit by his combo.
  • After level 6 if you try to all in him when hes above 60% hp, he'll most likely win.

VS

Irelia

Hard

  • This is one of the harder matchups if the Irelia is good.
  • She can basically dash to a creep, get free damage during her stun, and dash to you again when you use your W.
  • She has a lot of sustain.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

  • Max Q, his passive is strong if you let him use it
  • Your Q isn't limited by mana, his is
  • He can dunk you before your ult damage kicks in, be careful

VS

Jax

Medium

  • If he jumps at you without stun, he'll lose the trade unless he has his ultimate proc on his next auto, in which case he'll go equal.
  • If he goes in with stun, you can just dodge it and have your illusion damage + slow him.
  • You can also use your ult to avoid his stun, and outplay him.

VS

Jayce

Medium

  • 1 Option is to max Q and play from a safe distance.
  • What I do against Jayce that I do not recommend is to max E and try your best to cs like you would in a 2 v 1 lane. This lets you all in him and almost always kill at level 6 because after he uses E to knock you back, quickly press R to appear behind him.
  • You can also try and do the same with Q max but it can miss.

VS

Katarina

Medium

This matchup section will be assuming that the Kat is running 9-21-0 and will be building tanky.

  • Max E and rush Sunfire Cape after maybe a brutalizer if you got ahead
  • When she ults, use yours to negate like half her ult's damage

VS

Kayle

Medium

  • This isn't has hard as it would appear to be because of Kayle ult, because you do still out trade her at all levels
  • I would max Q for this one

VS

Kennen

Hard

  • After consistently losing lane to one of the Challenger players in SEA that mains Kennen, I learned the hard way that this champ is going to make your life hard
  • The main reason for this being hard is that his build path almost always includes Zhonyas as a first item or Liandry's or Rylais which both give HP.
  • His laning is easier, he can do just as much damage as you early and mid game along with having more CC and if he gets Zhonyas then he will kill you 80% of the time in all in's

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

  • The new Kha'Zix top lane is to max and evolve Q, meaning you should NEVER go up close to him and eat his 2s cd Q's. Should probably max Q here.
  • If hes good he'll ult when you use yours and wait for your mark to time out before re engaging.

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

  • His natural sustain is a bitch.
  • if you do manage to engage him, he can just kick you away after you ult and dash away from your R illusion.
  • He can constantly move around keeping up with your dash and out trading you with his skills.

VS

Lissandra

Hard

  • Lissandra is considered a counter pick to Zed because of having the ability to lock you up till your ult runs out. She also has an in built Zhonyas.
  • I would max Q for this one

VS

Malphite

Easy

  • If you play from a range, hes forced to max Q or lose the lane and has only that one skill to trade with you, if you play it right.
  • You simply out trade his Q because it has a mana cost.
  • your ult has a higher potential of killing him than his ult has of killing you.

VS

Nasus

Easy

This lane is a joke

VS

Nidalee

Easy

  • She can do nothing but heal your harass before level 6, if you use all 3 skills offensively.

VS

Olaf

Easy

  • His Q is limited by mana, yours isn't

VS

Pantheon

Hard

  • Start cloth armor and 5 potions, and rush ninja tabi
  • You cant dash away from anything because he will get the damage off during his stun anyway before you dash.
  • You have to all in him at level 6 to try and win the lane.

VS

Renekton

Hard

  • His ultimate counters yours.
  • He has higher trade potential at early levels hence making lane a nightmare.
  • You gotta farm well with Q or you're done

VS

Rengar

Medium

  • The standard Rengar playstyle in the current meta is to max E then W and buy early CDR items, to spam his E. If he uses the bushes properly he can win this matchup easily
  • I have recently however seen Rengar's max Q then W and play like Riot intended him to be played, this is much harder to beat and you should just avoid being near bushes till you're level 6
  • I would max E if Rengar is maxing Q and max Q if Rengar is maxing his Bola(E).

VS

Riven

Hard

  • She will win trades if good, and her shield negates your Q harass
  • Her ult can execute you before your ult damage kicks in

VS

Rumble

Easy

  • Your Q range is longer than his Q, which is his main damage.
  • if he gets an E on you, dash away from his Q range.
  • Care for his ult at level 6

VS

Ryze

Medium

  • I would start with a fort pot and try to cheese him at level 2, even level 3 is too dangerous
  • Farm from a distance with Q and try and all in him at level 6 because he has no escapes

VS

Shen

Medium

  • This is basically a skill matchup, based on the two peoples skill in lane and item choices.
  • Dodges his taunt with W or you're going to have a bad time

VS

Shyvana

Medium

  • Now that Shyvana's E goes through minions, Its probably not a good idea to eat her E+Q combo.
  • I would max Q and play this from a distance
  • Shyvana loves to push lanes and Zed is probably the best tower farmer in game so this matchup shouldn't be too hard in laning phase

VS

Singed

Medium

  • Easy before 6, You're done after that

VS

Teemo

Medium

  • Farm with Q
  • You can go in for the kill at any point his blind is down
  • Avoid taking free harass and know when to cs

VS

Tryndamere

Hard

  • Along with having higher trade potential at all levels because of retarded crit, he also can't die
  • I would buy a fort pot for this lane and try to kill him at level 2-3

VS

Udyr

Medium

  • You do as much damage as him if played right, you have to keep fighting him or he'll sustain with turtle stance off creeps

VS

Vladimir

Hard

  • Rush Hexdrinker
  • You should start with a fort pot and try to cheese Vladimir at level 2-3
  • If he gets to level 7-9 he will start wrecking you along with being able to pool your ult

VS

Volibear

Medium

  • His passive will save him so many times from your ult that you would probably consider throwing your computer out the window.
  • I would max E in this matchup and hit him with E + 1 auto if i can everytime he gets close, getting out with W before he can give me Rabies

VS

Wukong

Medium

  • This is hard because his main damage before 6 is E and you can't dash from it.
  • You will lose trades when he uses E+Q because your dash has 2-3x times the cooldown of his E.
  • You can avoid getting hit by his ult with your dash, or atleast avoid eating all of it.
  • He can outplay your ult with his illusion and jukes.

VS

Xin Zhao

Medium

  • This can be really hard depending on the Xin player's skill
  • If he Dashes to you, just E him and then dash away and E again before his knockup

VS

Yorick

Medium

  • Can cheese him super easy
  • Just fight him whenever possible, he can't do much to avoid your gap closer
  • Play aggressive and ward so you don't die because of it

VS

Zac

Medium

  • This doesn't have to be that hard if you max Q, its only a problem if you max E
  • If he rushes sunfire then this lane is going to be hard.

How to play Zed Back to Top

Introduction to Zed's kit and mechanics.

Q

Your main skill in laning phase, is similar to Kennen's Q but goes through all targets. You can use it twice within the duration of your shadow if you have 30-35% CDR.

W

Spawns an illusion at the targeted area, this illusion copies your Q and E with the E slow being increased if used by the illusion. You can activate W again to swap places with the illusion making this your escape spell and gap closer.

E

A melee range aoe spell similar to Akali's E that slashes everything around you, has a 4 second cooldown at lower levels. This is used as a ranged slow when combined with your illusion. You can use it twice within the duration of your shadow (W) with the 5% base CDR from masteries.

R

You become untargetable for a second while dashing to the target. You then spawn an illusion where you began casting the ultimate. After 3 seconds your target is hit by your total AD + fixed % of physical and magic damage you dealt to the target during this time.

Main Combo using W as a gap closer :

You press W and immediately press E and Q. Pressing Q first ensures your Q hits but doesn't guarantee your enemy being within E range. Pressing E first slows your target making it easier for your to land Q. I mostly use E first and then Q after but I've noticed Bjergsen uses Q first a lot of times.

You can then swap places with your illusion and auto attack the enemy, if you want to.

This is also your main harass combo and wave clear in laning phase, where you toss an illusion and use skills but don't dash to the target afterwards.

Main Combo using R as a gap closer :

As soon as your ult casts, you'll have an illusion where you began to cast the ult. You then immediately press E and auto the target at the same time since the two animations overlap. Then you Q the slowed enemy and auto attack again in a similar way. When you are experienced with Zed most of the time the Second auto during/after Q will proc your passive.

You have to make sure you cast E fast though, landing Q depends on landing E. Swap with your R illusion to escape if you need to.

Role in the game Back to Top

Zed is an AD caster.

Laning phase :

Farm, and kill enemies at 6 if you can. You can also all in players at early levels if they make a major mistake.

Grouping for towers :

Zed has a kit suitable for poking enemies from far if needed (W E Q combo).

Grouping for dragons :

You can Zone enemies with your illusion->slow followed by double shuriken.

Teamfights :

You serve the role of the assassin in the team. Your job is to find their one main carry, and somehow get your combo off on them. Since Zed can get to carries so easily he's extremely fun to play.

When to pick Zed :

Champion select is important, Zed is best when picked against carries with no built in escapes like Kog'maw and is bad against picks like Singed, that become super tanky and still do damage.

Pros and Cons Back to Top

                                       238_64.png

Pros

  • One of the best champions to serve the assassin role.
  • Has insane burst.
  • Amazing mobility and juke potential if used right.
  • Doesn't fall off late game unless behind.
  • Amazing wave clear.
  • Is extremely fun to play.

Cons

  • Hard to master and play to his full potential a lot of times.
  • Has a lot of hard matchups in top lane, hence making Zed mid a much more viable alternative.
  • Like any other AD Caster, will be useless if feeding/far behind.
  • Is easy to gank once his W is on cooldown.

About Me Back to Top

My main IGN is The Corrupt and I used to play on the NA server, I had been ranked in Diamond Division 1 since the first week of Season 3. I mained top lane till season 2 until I switched to Jungle and have peaked at rank 40 on the NA ladder doing so. Sometime in early season 3 I had two accounts in the top 100-150 ranks of the ladder.

rank 5.png

I don't live in USA anymore so my NA accounts have been decaying since May 2013.

I currently play on accounts on EUW and Garena SEA.
