Lifesteal

  • Since the changes to the top lane meta made it even harder for assassins.
  • This will help you sustain better against the all out tanks.
  • Makes the lane much safer than running more armor pen.

Armor Penetration

  • Since you'll be using your Q more than anything, for both last hits and harass.
  • Scales better into late game than completely stacking AD.
  • Since Zed's W at max passively gives 25% bonus AD at max, armor pen is better.

Flat/Scaling Magic Resist

  • I use 5 Flat MR glyphs for 7 MR against the 8 Magic pen mages start with, the rest is Scaling MR.
  • Standard bruiser choice.
  • Since you'll be going balls deep in team fights sometimes, this is worth the investment.

  • Armor for top lane should be a no-brainer.

Offense - 21 points

The masteries are very effective on Zed, mainly spell weaving and blade weaving from Zed's ult combo which includes 3 or even 4 spells if you hit both shurikens and two auto attacks which in turn increase his ults "pop" damage by a minimum of 2% or 3% if the enemy did not flash.


Defense - 9 points

These are really strong on AD casters now with the improved damage reduction from champion basic attacks and the 3% extra hp.

  • Max R first for reduced cooldown and increased damage on your ultimate.
  • Max Q next for ranged damage and last hitting.
  • Max E next for short ranged damage and a slow.
  • Max W last for reduced cooldown on your gap closer / escape.

Whenever Zed autoattacks an enemy below 50% health, he deals an additional 6 / 8 / 10% of their maximum health as magic damage. This effect cannot occur on the same target more than once every 10 seconds.

Zed and his shadows throw their shurikens, each dealing physical damage to the first enemy they pass through and a lesser amount to enemies thereafter.

Living Shadow: Additional shurikens striking the same enemy deal 50% damage and restore energy.

Passive: Zed's bonus attack damage is increased by a percentage.

Active: Zed's shadow dashes forward, remaining in place for 4 seconds. Reactivating this ability will cause Zed to switch positions with this shadow.

Zed's shadow will mimic his basic abilities. If both strike the same target Zed regains some energy. Energy can only be restored once per mimicked ability.

Active: Zed and his shadows create a burst of shadow, dealing physical damage to nearby enemies.

Zed's slash reduces the cooldown of Living Shadow by 1 second for each enemy struck. His shadows' slashes slow enemies for 1.5 seconds.

Living Shadow: Overlapping Shadow Slashes striking the same enemy deal no additional damage but will incur an increased slow and restore energy.

Active: Zed becomes untargetable and dashes to target enemy champion. Upon arrival, he marks the target for death and spawns a living shadow behind the target. This shadow lasts 4 seconds and mimics Zed's abilities. Reactivating Death Mark will cause Zed to switch positions with this shadow.

After 3 seconds, the mark will detonate, dealing physical damage equal to 100% of Zed's attack damage plus a percentage of all magic and physical damage dealt to the target by Zed and his shadows while the mark was active.

Doran's items and fort pot are the most common so they don't need much explanation.


Boots 4 Pots

  • Boots give you the mobility needed to escape early ganks, respond to invades in the enemy jungle and to effectively zone control.
  • Four potions allow you to sustain in lane longer resulting in more farm and more experience.

Cloth Armor

1029_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2044_32.png   or  1029_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png

  • If you're against something like a purple side lee sin jungle, or a harder matchup like pantheon.
  • Gives you great sustain along with a ward for a safe early laning phase.
  • if you decide to buy a ward, wait in the base for the 3rd pot.


Core

  • Gives you increased damage as well cooldown reduction.
  • I almost always get a  3153_32.png after.



Situational

3155_32.png - A great item against AP based matchups.


3269_32.png - These are the upgraded boots I prefer on Zed currently. The additional movement speed helps escaping, catching, juking, and overall positioning. An alternative is boots of mobility which allow Zed to get in ult range easily without blowing flash or w.


3026_32.png - I either get this after 3072_32.png or my 3071_32.png depending on if I'm getting focused down or not. It's a great item on Zed because after he revives he can still do tons of damage.


3072_32.png - Great item for increasing your burst damage. You can get this right after your 3134_32.png or 3071_32.png. You could also choose to get a 3026_32.png instead and delay your 3072_32.png if you feel you're getting focused in team fights and don't need damage.


3031_32.png - A great item for increasing your overall damage. I much prefer going defensive items after getting key damage items such as 3134_32.png3153_32.png and 3072_32.png. You can try to fit this item into your build if you need more damage.


3035_32.png - Great item to get whatsoever and should be your third core item in most situations after 3134_32.png and 3153_32.png.
