Generally, picking Exhaust and Flash on Leona is ideal. 

The Exhaust spell is an invaluable tool in protecting your AD carry and mitigating the amount of damage taken. It's also extremely useful in team fights in protecting your team if you can use it on the enemy AP carry right before they unleash their burst damage. This will reduce their burst by 30%! It's important NOT to exhaust the enemy support as it has little use except for reducing move speed. Almost never worth exhausting support. Whenever using exhaust, try to use it right before the enemy unleashes their burst to optimize the amount of damage decreased.

Flash allows an aggressive support like Leona to make plays and an all round useful spell. Can never go wrong pick this up.

I only use this combo if my ad carry is running cleanse. Ad has cleanse to cleanse exhaust and ignite, while still having the advantage with ignite. It's really strong during the laning phase, but in team fights it's quite lackluster.

If you're feeling especially manly, you can try this to have more power in fights. Be extra careful not to get baited into fights since you do not have flash.

This mastery set allows for Leona to be tankier whilst still being able to get points in Wealth, Biscuiteer, and Explorer. Biscuit is really important since Leona has no sustain spells. I feel like for early phases of the game, the MP regen is so much stronger than summoner spell cooldown. It allows you to do more combos which equates into roaming, aggressive early fights, etc. It's true that the summoner spell CDR is better in all other phases of the game, but the 20 sec longer cooldown on exhaust is worth it for early game aggression IMHO. 
It's wise to buy the summoner cooldown enchantment or the Captain boots when it comes to the later stages of the game. At the end of the day, it's a preference thing. If you feel like you will be roaming more and engaging in more fights, it might be in your interest to get the mana regen.

-Almost always get Q at level 1 since it has a shorter cooldown and doesn't force you into a position you might not want. 

-Maxing W on Leona first is imperative because it allows you to be much more tankier and maximizes damage.

-Only get E level 1 if your team is going to level 1 fight because it allows for more damage for your passive proc.

I would recommend to not smartcast Solar Flare (ultimate) because it dramatically reduces the accuracy for the stun especially for players that are unfamiliar to Leona.

Core

-Starting with 2041_32.png early allows Leona to have added sustain against high range poke lanes. Generally, you want to start with 1001_32.png or 1029_32.png to gain advantages in lane.

-Since Leona doesn't provide any sustain, starting with 1006_32.png will make the laning phase easier.

-Early vision wards will allow Leona to remove enemy vision and granting greater presence and overall control of brushes and areas in general (allows you to play more aggressive).

-By getting a 2049_32.png, it makes it so GP5's are less necessary because each placed ward is 75 gold saved. Over an entire game, this is equal to the amount of gold GP5 items generate.

-Getting 3069_32.png early lets Leona initiate with greater ease, and helps the team in fights/escapes  in general. Don't really want to rush this item, unless you're team is super ahead and want to continue to snowball. 

-Rushing 3105_32.png is generally a good idea, since you will be in front of the carries and soaking up alot of the damage. This in combination with Locket of the Iron Solari is strong against AOE team comps. Upgrade Aegis to 3107_32.png if that have more AP damage since the aura doubles the amount of MR given to teammates from 15 to 30 MR.

-Get defensive boots according to the enemy team's damage source. 


Situational Items

-Getting a 1054_32.png early allows Leona to be super tanky in lane and help win alot of trades. Not always necessary, mainly get it when they have an 12_icon_64.png or a 44_icon_64.png.

-With the new FOTM of 3071_32.png stacking, it can be a good idea to get even more armor with 3110_32.png and 3143_32.png. Picking up Frozen Heart if you dont have as much CDR and getting Randiuns if you have CDR and want more HP.
-3056_32.png is a good dive item on Leona if your team is ahead in gold and the other team is able to turtle and fend off tower pushes. HIGHLY SITUATIONAL.

-With the new changes to 2042_32.png, I feel like it is not very worth it unless it's almost baron dance time. It only lasts for a certain time limit and will disappear if you die with it on. Even if you don't die, it will depend on if the enemy team will  very warding alot or not. This item is very hit or miss.

-You might want to get 3023_32.png if they have alot of AP damage. The movement speed bonus will help Leona initiate and the MR will mitigate burst you will face upon initiating. The active can also help your carries kite divers or chase down running enemies.

-3222_32.png will allow you to protect your AD carry further. HIGHLY situational. Leona

Questionable

-3050_32.png is a very strong item for hypercarry AD carries, but I feel indifferent about this item, because rarely would you have to lane with a Kog, Vayne, or Draven as Leona. Even then, this item does not provide alot of tankiness that Leona needs to initiate fights and soak damage.

-3092_32.png can be a good item to allow your team to kite enemies, but it will make Leona squishy and it does not provide anything useful outside of its active.

Hard

Alistar is a support who is also very aggressive, so you should be very wary. He also has a sustain spell with an AOE heal. Try not to agress onto Alistar, since he is very tanky and it will not be an easy thing to do. Try to keep stuns on their AD carry. Force Alistar to use his spell on you and not your AD and you should be fine. May need to go for early1054_32.pngor1028_32.pngfor this lane.

She has very little damage, and is very easily bursted down.

Easy

This lane is quite easy as long as Blitzcrank does not pull your AD in. Even if your AD gets pulled aim to stun the opponents AD carry to prevent your AD from taking more damage, and it will allow you to turn the tides and aim for their AD. If you ever get pulled, activate W to minimize damage, and turn onto their AD carry since they used a lot of their damage onto you and not your AD.

Easy

Her range is a bit longer and her traps can get a little annoying, but another than that she is verysusceptible to Leona and her stuns.

Easy

Very squishy, and easily bursted down. It's okay if CorkiValkyrie's away because the spell cost ALOT of mana and you can just try to go in again a bit later.

Draven

Hard

Dravens E spell also negates the animation on Zenith Blade. His movement speed buff also makes it difficult to lock him down. However, if Draven ever gets stunned his DPS will suffer tremendously because the bulk of his damage come from his Q and he will not be able to catch his axes if stunned. The only difficult part is stunning him.

Ezreal

Medium

Ezreal is annoying with his E spell and his Q poke. Just make sure not to get poked down before going in. It can be challenging to burst him down since he can E away if you and your AD's burst isn't coordinated correctly.

Graves

Medium

Graves isn't very mobile except for his dash, so it's pretty easy to catch him with stuns. The bad thing is his passive makes him tankier than most AD carries and he does more damage when you're standing closer to him. Regardless, you should be able to deal more damage and win trades.

Janna

Hard

The reason Janna is a harder matchup is because her tornado cancels the animation for Zenith Blade. You can try to bait the tornado out by activating Q, running up to them, and then activate Zenith Blade. After getting one kill advantage, this lane will be very easy to zone.

Lulu

Medium

This matchup is a fairly easy one up until level 6. Up until then, try to be asaggressiveas possible. Lulu has a lot of poke so be careful of that and not get poked down before going in.

Lux

Easy

You and your ad should do more than enough damage to win all trades and burst them to death. Just dodge all of Lux's abilities to the best of your abilities and you will be fine.

Miss Fortune

Easy

She's very mobile, but it shouldn't be difficult to catch her. Once you land a stun on her, she has no way of escaping the impending doom.

Nunu

Medium

Nunu matchup is tanky, so it's not easy to burst him down. It's best to aim for the AD carry and burst the AD down. Leona's stuns can interrupt the ult of Nunu's. If Nunu ever snowballs you, look to jump in with Zenith Bladeimmediately because you will win the trade.

Quinn

Hard

Hard to catch/combo her with her blind and her bounce back thingy. Best time to try to jump on her is when she doesn't have her blind or/and the jumping back thingy.

Even though Sona has sustain advantage over you, you and your ad should do more than enough damage to win all trades and burst them to death.

Even though Soraka has sustain advantage over you, you and your ad should do more than enough damage to win all trades and burst them to death.

Taric is a support who is also aggressive, so you should be very wary. He also has a sustain spell with a heal and he has an AOE buff. Similar to Corki in that her escape costs an enormous amount of mana. If she has to use her jump way that means she is not applying the damage from that spell. She is also has a very weak mid game, so shutting her down early will cripple her.

Twitch can get annoying solely because of his invisibility. Other than than he is squishier than most AD's and is very easy to burst down.

Easy

Similar to Kog Maw, except easier. When he dies he does not do damage. He has no escapes so it's like picking on a baby.

Very easy to catch and her early game is very weak.

Zyra

Medium

Zyra lane is a little tricky, but aim for their ad carry since a dead Zyra will still deal damage, and in turn may turn the trade upside down. Zyra's poke can be annoying, but try to dodge everything and you will do fine.

Tips 'n Tricks

  • When an enemy places a ward, Auto + Q + auto the ward to clear it out.
  • Sunlight passive does not stack, so keep this in mind. Space out your abilities accordingly.
  • Leona is a very aggressive support and you should look to be aggressive. This being said always be aware of where the jungler may be. Ward up and be careful of baits because Leona is a champ that has to go all in to be effective.
  • W is the bulk of Leona's burst so make sure it lands!
  • W allows grants Leona Armor and Magic Resist, so remember to use in when you are about to take a lot of damage.
  • Leona is heavily reliant on her teammates, so make sure your teammates are ready to follow up when you are.
  • When Leona hits level 3, it is the prime time to be aggressive. She has all her spells and is able to do massive burst.
  • Sometimes you can try to get level 2 before the enemy bot lane to gain a massive advantage. Try to do double golems and go all in right as you and your AD carry hits level 2. Alternatively, you and your ad can push the minions slightly, so you guys get exp faster than the lane opponents.
  • Try to stun only the enemy AD carry unless you can burst the enemy support fast enough and back off. The reason is so that it minimizes the amount of damage the enemy lane can output since the AD carry is stunned for so long.
  • As leona, you want to be a tank and soak up as much damage as possible for your team. Try to hit as many enemy champions with your abilities to maximize effectiveness.
