 3.png Exhaust is a must. Take it, always.

4.png Up for debate. I like to sometimes use it aggressively to snowball an unsuspecting enemy for a gank, and it can of course be used to save you if you're caught out of position while warding.

7.png Take this over flash if you're confident you won't be caught and you want to provide some burst heal for your carry. 

2.png With 2049_32.png in the game, 2.png is a weaker choice these days, but still somewhat viable if your jungler/mid are strong early game and you want to make the enemy jungler's life miserable.

Marks

Armor

  • Your only sustain is your Q which you won't get until later. This lets your shrug off auto attacks from their AD carry. Also, you can soak more damage from auto attacks so your carry doesn't get hit. Lastly, you can freeze the lane by tanking minions before they get to your tower.
  • You're not taking Mpen because you won't be building AP.
  • You're not taking any AD because you won't be auto attacking much. Your job isn't to do damage, but to maximize your carry's damage.

Seals

Armor

  • Same as above. Furthermore, they're simply best in class for bot lane.

Glyphs

MR/Level

  • You're not likely to be facing a lot of AP burst bot lane early on, so this will get you more tanky later in the game for teamfights. A tanky Nunu is a useful nunu!

Flat MR

If the enemy support has strong AP harass early on (Lulu, Zyra, Sona), mix and match between MR/Level and Flat MR runes. I tend to grab 5 flats and 4 MR/Levels to both take the sting off harass early on and to have a little more MR for teamfights.

Quints

GP/10

  • Standard on most supports. You're not csing, so you need the passive income.

  • The big ticket item is the gold/10 and starting gold. The rest is bonus.


Detailed Breakdown

As nunu, you have no way to heal your carry in lane. Thus you need to be able to soak some damage that would otherwise go to your carry. This is why we take armor reds and yellows, and why we spec 1/13/16 in masteries.

Offense
Summoner's Wrath: You don't do much damage, but by god when you exhaust them they'll feel it.

Defense
Durability: Free hp/level
Hardiness: More armor! Yay!
Resistance: Some MR, can't argue with that.
Unyielding: I laugh at early game auto attack harass!
Veteran's Scars: I am real man!
Block: Stand there and spam /laugh as the enemy carries feeble auto attacks tickle you.

Utility
Meditation: Extra mana regen for more snowballs in lane
Wanderer: You don't start with boots. Might as well. Otherwise drop a point into Improved Recall.
Summoner's Insight: Grab a point in here if you're running flash or Clairvoyance.
Mastermind: Good any way you cut it.
Greed: Why yes, Nunu loves more passive income. Good thing he bought this annuity!
Biscuiteer: Not great, but might as well. You want the free ward from Explorer.
Wealth: Yeah baby! This lets you start with both components of a 3096_32.png as well as 2 wards.
Explorer: Free ward to protect your jungler from an invade or to bait a pink ward from enemy support.

Spells:

Nunu is simple. He speeds things up, and he slows things down.

Visionary: Meh. You don't auto attack much.

Consume: Largely worthless. Grab a point in it before your team goes for dragon so you can help secure it faster. If you're eating minions in lane, you're not supporting your carry as well as you should be. Sometimes it can be effective if you want to be hyper aggressive and push their tower, however. You can soak more damage and heal it right back up. Try to eat bigger minions then so you don't steal the cs. The downside of course is that you'll necessarily end up pushing the lane this way. Generally you get it pretty late, however, anywhere between levels 4-8 is acceptable.

Blood Boil: Your best spell. Level it first and keep your carry permanently buffed with it.

Ice Blast: Slows down enemy attack speed by 25%, decreases their movement speed, AND does some damage? Use it on the enemy ADC in lane, and use it to peel for your carry in team fights.

Absolute Zero: If you were AP, this would be a tremendous damage dealer. As it is, for support its purpose is to further lower enemy MS and AS, and to ruin their ability to re-position. The more of the enemy you can slow with it, the better.


Remember: Get W it first and keep your carry permanently buffed.

In-lane core items

  • Try to buy a 2049_32.png as soon as you can, so you waste less gold on wards when you could be getting them for free. If you can't, grab a 3096_32.png and some 2044_32.png. Upgrade it into 2045_32.png after you have 1001_32.png and 3096_32.png.

  • Buy a 2043_32.png whenever you expect to contest a dragon, or when you want a gank from your jungler and need to clear enemy wards. This item is huge now after the nerf to 2042_32.png and the buff to other wards through 2049_32.png.
  • 3097_32.png Grab this in lane since you have no other way of giving your carry sustain power. Now that it gives armor, it helps you soak more auto attacks too.

Mid game core 

2045_32.png3105_32.png3050_32.png2043_32.png

  • 3050_32.png - Gives you health, CDR, and an aura that your ADC and bruisers lifesteal and 20 AD. Great item. Get it first when you can be more aggressive.
  • 3105_32.png - Gives you health, armor, MR, health regen, and a great defensive aura. Get this first if your team is a little behind and you need the defensive stats. 
  • 2045_32.png More health and more concurrent wards. Great upgrade, borderline OP item. You should have all the wards out all the time.
  • If you can complete your mid game core items (3105_32.pngand 3050_32.png), you'll probably win the game.

Late game luxury

3107_32.png3190_32.png2042_32.png3110_32.png

  • Continue getting buffs and debuffs for your team.
  • 3107_32.png Upgrade to this for more stats when you have the gold, especially against an AP heavy team.
  • 3190_32.png Health, armor, CDR, regen, and a Barrier for your whole team. Great item for team fights.
  •  3110_32.png is expensive, but works great with the rest of your debuffs.
  • 2042_32.png Oracles was nerfed, but once you start fighting for Baron, get it. With wards being spammable through sightstone, a pink ward just doesn't cut it at that pint.
  • 3069_32.png Speed more things up! Great item for initiating, escaping, or letting your carry reposition and kite in those late game team fights.
  • 3222_32.png Single target cleanse and heal in the same item. Great way to buff your carry in teamfights if he's getting focused by CC.

There seems to be a mistake in the utility tree masteries. 8 points are needed to access tier 3 masteries and only 7 are used here. I'm guessing the point in Awareness should go in Wanderer to make it work.

I was wondering about the gp/10 runes and masteries. I thought I worked it out that the masteries and runes combined will rake in about 900 gold after 30 minutes. Is that really worth it?

On Nunu, absolutely. You don't have any other income beyond passive income and income from assists. An extra 300g after 10min in that scenario is the difference between buying that sightstone earlier or having to waste more money on standalone wards.

I LOVE Nunu support with Ashe. I think Ashe should be included in the "best adc's" section. With Ashe's abilities and Nunu's E, two targets can be slowed indefinitely.

Very nice guide, though 1 thing to notice is. Blitz has 3 spells to cancel ur ulti. So I would increase the difficulty to medium instead of easy, but overall very nice guide :D

OH MY GOD! Im a noob and just tried this... Even if your team is a bit behind, the moment you build zeke's is like ''SURPRISE M**CKAS'' and the game turns to your teams benefit... AWESOME guide! My default playstyle for nunu from now on.. :)

Why don't you recommend consume level 1 if you get bottom side? It means exp advantage in lane as you can get golems really easy, and you can even give your jungler a smiteless red. Works really nicely, any reason why not?

So in the beggining in a team fight you can do more damage while still protecting your team. This is no time to eat minion thus waste of an ability for tht moment.

One comment I would like to add in synergy is if you're laning with an Ashe, ask for a lane swap if one of your lanes can handle a 1v2. That way you can shut down the enemy lane and avoid the nasty early weakness.
