Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.pngFlash is a pretty staple summoner spell for mid lanes as it allows you to safely engage, disengage, and re-position. It is the optimal summoner spell for mid lanes in all cases.
12.pngTypically, I don't take teleport nor do I recommend it but this is only because I do not focus heavily on roaming but more on lane pressure and lane dominance. This, however, is a great summoner spell as her Laser has very long range and her utility proves to be beneficial to everyone. It is a matter of preference to match Flash with Teleport or with Ignite.
14.pngI will almost always take ignite if not requested otherwise on Lux. She has a very large burst at level 6 and this is just icing on the cake; it will allow you to burst a champion from 100% to 0% in a single combo at level 6.
21.pngI've recently taken a liking to Barrier because it's safer, more reliable, and much more fits the Lux playstyle of being a ranged sniping mage. Use it if you aren't really an aggressive laner.

QUINT%20AP.pngQuintessences

Flat Ability Power

  • Provides a sum of 15 AP to your using
  • Maximizes Lux's burst potential
  • Best choice in terms of Quintessences as it maximizes damage from afar(using laser)
  • Early-Mid game dominant rune

Flat Magic Penetration

  • Better scaling into late game than Flat Ability Power as magic resists naturally rise with items + levels
  • Allows for Lux's kit to hit much harder in general after early game
  • Late game dominant rune

MARK%20MAGIC%20PEN.pngMarks

Flat Magic Penetration

  • Only suitable set of marks for Lux as others will pale in comparison in terms of use
  • Maximizes burst potential
  • Allows Lux to efficiently scale throughout the game
  • Only viable choice for Lux as an AP mid

SEAL%20OF%20MANA%20REGEN.pngSeals

Mana Regeneration Per Level

  • These are the only Seals I would recommend because of her tendency to be spammy
  • Armor seals should not be used as she is a long-range mage for the most part
  • Allows for a more wasteful mana pool later on
  • In conjunction with Chalice of Harmony provides a reduced reliance on blue buff

GLYPH%20MAGIC%20RESIST.pngGlyphs

AP Per Level

  • These are the only glyphs I would ever run because she is a mid-long range mage
  • Maximizes burst, as all her other runes do
  • Promotes better mid-late scaling

Offense

  • 21 points in the offensive tree lets you maximize burst(again) while being able to attack from afar
  • Allows Lux to unlock the masteries that suit her best: magic penetration, scaling AP, % AP, Executioner(for stronger snipes to prevent those 15-health survivors), CDR for more lasers, Havoc for more overall burst
  • If you are not running ignite, instead move the Summoner's Wrath point into CDR(Sorcery)

Utility

  • 9 points in the utility tree allows you to hit all the important points of Lux: mana regen for more sustained laning & sieging, runic affinity for improved blue buff, reduced Flash cooldown, and finally improved Recall time which occasionally may be the difference between life and death. Overall fantastic tree for Lux

Skill Order:Final_Spark.jpg - Lucent_Singularity.jpg - Light_Binding.jpg - Prismatic_Barrier.jpg

  • R should be maxed first since it is her sniping ability, her main source of damage, and makes her who she is as a champion
  • E should be maxed immediately after due to its utility as a slow while being much easier to land than Q plus the increased slow duration + damage
  • Q should be maxed third because of its utility as a double snare and leveling it grants a lower cooldown every level. It is maxed second due to the fact it 1. inhibits effective farming and 2. hard to land
  • W should be maxed last as a single point in it should be sufficient to soak up most DoTs as it is a double shield. Maxing it as an AP Lux would not be beneficial because it is rare that a Lux should be close enough to receive heavy damage

Light_Binding.jpgLight Binding

  • Primarily used as a set-up for the whole Lux combo
  • Provides great utility in skirmishes as well as teamfights due to its double snare
  • Helps pick off targets that are astray from their team
  • Provides a good amount of damage which allows an easy double kill if landed on both targets(when followed by the combo)

Prismatic_Barrier.jpgPrismatic Barrier

  • Used solely as a life saver and as damage mitigation
  • Can counter a whole ignite within levels 4-9(can counter earlier but typically this is skilled in at level 4)
  • Has a fantastic AP Ratio of 0.35x2 which allows amazing damage mitigation in a skirmish and teamfight
  • Low cooldown at max level(10 w/o CDR) which allows for more consistent shielding

Lucent_Singularity.jpgLucent Singularity

  • Used primarily as a farming tool and poking tool in lane
  • Provides a very useful slow of 20/24/28/32/36%(depending on level)
  • Provides a great setup for a combo if the snare is not up as the slow should keep them in place long enough to laser
  • Can be used to check Brushes and different unseen parts of the map
  • Can be exploded at will which means it triples as a zoning tool(along with farming/poking)

Final_Spark.jpgFinal Spark / Finales Funkeln

  • Used as a sniping tool to pick off enemy champions
  • Allows for extremely efficient roaming as you can Laser from a great distance
  • Activates Lux's passive and then refreshes it for a large amount of burst
  • 24-second cooldown @ max level with 40% CDR
  • Can be used to wave clear and poke, does not always have to be used for a kill
  • Can be used solely for its damage

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Core Items

Can switch with Archangel's based on preference(meaning you skip tear early on)

Situational Items

Start With

1001_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png2003_32.png
  • Typically I start with Crystalline Flask & 3x Health Potions, but in Lux's situation I prefer to have mobility for more roaming potential. If you are conservative with mana this start should be fine.

Build Towards

3028_32.png
  • Lux has a tendency to be wasteful with mana due to her kit and the unreliable aiming of her spells. She also relies on solely E to farm efficiently which costs a large amount of mana. Overall, she just needs mana, mana, and more mana and this will be the optimal item for her.

Core

3020_32.png3174_32.png3089_32.png3135_32.png3157_32.png3165_32.png
  • This is the ideal build for Lux as she requires burst, survivability, and some CDR. The items have been listed in the order in which they should be completed.

Situational

3026_32.png - Great item versus teams that rely on heavy amounts of burst to kill you or champions that you cannot avoid due to their kit(Irelia, Riven, Darius, Rengar(sometimes)).

3001_32.png - I do not recommend this item due to its range nerf at all but it is still a good investment for the AP and MR components. It usually counters poking AP champions like Ziggs or Zyra/Orianna.

3027_32.png - I personally do not recommend this item as the health and mana components will go to waste since she is usually not close enough to get hit and the mana given is pretty minuscule compared to a Tear + Grail combo. Overall, this is just not cost efficient.

3041_32.png - I only recommend this item in two scenarios: 1. You can land all your lasers 2. It is a solo queue game. In competitive play, kills are typically not plentiful so as a result assists are not either. It would be a waste of 1235g for this item in competitive play. In solo queue this would be great as people's focus and footwork are not as refined and sharp as better players. Also, land your lasers. If you can't land them this isn't worth getting.

3151_32.png - I've toyed with Liandry's Torment a bit but I feel it is only good on champions with DoTs as the damage is much more consistent. I do not recommend this item in any scenario but hey damage is damage.

3128_32.png - This is only good for Lux players that enjoy staying near their opponents. If you can quickly DFG, land the snare, and combo they are almost guaranteed to be disintegrated.

3100_32.png - I've found that Lich Bane is up to preference in comparison to Archangel's. I realize this can be the core item in most Lux builds but it's up to you on whether or not you like to be in range for auto-attacks or if you like to stay back in a safer area.

VS

Ahri

Medium

  • This will primarily be a matter of landing skillshots
  • Focus on farming pre-6 and then switch your focus to roaming
  • Try to poke her out starting at level 3 as your Lucent Singularity will be rank 2 which makes it much more mana-efficient to poke with
  • She will more than likely kill you if you miss your snare, so be VERY, VERY careful with how you use it
  • If she ultimates in to engage on you, snare her where she lands with her ultimate as there is a slight delay that prevents her from ulting again which is your window of opportunity

VS

Akali

Hard

  • She will kill you the second she hits level 6
  • A good akali will dodge all your skillshots and proceed to kill you
  • Get a gank, roam, farm, that's all you can do.
  • Avoid the lane after 6 if possible(besides to farm)
  • Hardest match-up I've experienced lanewise

VS

Anivia

Medium

  • This is pretty much a farm + poke fest
  • If she auto attacks you, E her to poke back and proc your passive on her
  • When she hits 6, focus on either trying to attack her when her ultimate is on cooldown or from far away or from brushes out of her vision
  • Your biggest priority is to out-roam her but this is very difficult due to her immense pushing power so you should try to push her out of lane when your CS is more towards her tower then proceed to roam after backing or even before backing

VS

Annie

Easy

  • Poke her with E and continue to follow-up with autoattacks
  • Use your Prismatic Barrier to mitigate her Q and her following auto attacks to win trades
  • You can kill her from afar as most Annies typically do a Sorcerer's Shoes, 2x Doran's Ring, Rabadon's Deathcap build which makes them very, very vulnerable to burst damage

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

  • If she lands a Noxious Blast on you, she will dumbly walk in a straight line towards you in hopes of comboing with Twin Fangs
  • When she does, simply snare her, auto attack, E, auto attack, shield off the DoT, and push her out of lane
  • Should be simple to outfarm and outpush/poke/roam so this match-up is overall very easy
  • The main reason this is on "medium" is if you miss your snare you're pretty much dead unless you Flash(if she's in a fair distance from you)

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

  • Ask for ganks
  • Has heavy sustain to counteract all of your attempts to harass
  • Level 6 can 100 > 0 you in one single knock-up
  • Is dangerous close range, mid range, and long range

VS

Diana

Medium

  • After the nerf she will be much easier to deal with. When she attempts to Q you, simply dodge it.
  • If she lands a Q and goes on you, it's pretty much(in this patch) a guaranteed death for you even if you snare her as a smart diana will simply wait until the snare to expire to Q + Ulti you again for a pull/kill
  • The only reason this is medium and not hard is because of the upcoming nerfs. If not for the nerf, this would be on EXTREME HARD DIFFICULTY IMPOSSIBLE mode(not literally, but she's pretty annoying to deal with)

VS

Evelynn

Medium

  • In this lane you can only push her to her tower and roam
  • Farm, roam, gank there is not many choices here
  • Do not ever think she is actually at base or roaming; she could be sneaking up right behind you through a brush for a simple kill

VS

Fizz

Easy

  • Dangerous if let alone to farm and scale to his level 6
  • Poke him with everything you've got when he goes for a CS
  • Constantly auto attack him and he will get irritated and make an irrational move such as engaging on you which will result in him getting poked to death/blowing a flash or possibly dying
  • Poke, farm, roam, win

VS

Gragas

Medium

  • This is primarily a skill match-up since Lux is very susceptible tore-positioningabilities as well as crowd control/slows in particular
  • Avoid his barrels and try to land your Lucent Singularity. Basically it's two "barrels" trying to hit each other
  • Autoattack him anytime he's open to get hit(without putting yourself at risk) as he is melee and will have to use a gap closer to reach you
  • His gap closer has a reasonable travel time so it should be easy to dodge and/or predict

VS

Karthus

Easy

  • Poke him anytime he tries to Lay Waste a minion
  • Cast Lucent Singularity(E) on him anytime you can or if he's open/vulnerable
  • Dodge his skittles(Q) and you will be fine
  • Your Prismatic Barrier completely counteracts his ultimate
  • Try to keep Lucent Singularity up on him for as long as possible before activating because he is very susceptible to slows
  • Snare him from long distances when possible
  • He is very easy to kill at level 6 because typically he will not have purchased a catalyst yet which makes him super squishy

VS

Kassadin

Medium

  • He must be ganked before level 6 and poked anytime he attempts to CS
  • If he ever Qs you around level 5-7(which is when Kassadins usually do), simply Prismatic Barrier over it and retaliate with plentiful auto attacks and spells
  • Hard to outroam, but easy to outlane. Simply destroy him in lane so hard that he will be struggling to transition to mid-game while you are transitioning from mid game to late game(if that makes sense)
  • Farm, harass, roam, win

VS

Katarina

Hard

  • She is one of the hardest match-ups in the game versus Lux
  • You have 100% no way of stopping her ultimate
  • Her shunpo completely counters you in every single way possible(since Lux is 100% skillshot)
  • Her damage and aspect of being resourceless will destroy you in every way
  • Ask for a gank, or don't pick Lux into Katarina, or simply keep roaming/farming afar with Lucent Singularity

VS

Lulu

Medium

  • Lulu mid has been pretty prevalent(though less now) and is primarily a farmfest
  • In this matchup, all you can do is farm and roam. Lulu is practically unkillable, especially against Lux who relies on skillshots for damage
  • Dueling pre-6 is probably your best bet in trying to win lane because post-6, level 7 & 9, Lulu becomes very deadly.

VS

Morgana

Medium

  • You must dodge her snare and attack her with autoattacks as often as possible(since she will likely shield yourabilities)
  • This is pretty much a farmfest throughout the whole game because there is no guaranteed way to kill her
  • However, she can kill you if she lands a snare on you so be wary of that
  • As with many other match-ups, roam, farm, lane, etc

VS

Orianna

Medium

  • If you miss your snare, you will die at any levels 5+
  • If you land your snare, you will drop her to about ~30% with full combo(due to her natural tankiness + Protect)
  • It is hard to outfarm her and hard to outlane her but where you shine is roaming
  • Help the other lanes become much stronger and in the process you will become much stronger than she is with a few kills on your back
  • To kill her, snare her while standing at your side's ledge adjacent to the wraith wall and combo, ignite, etc
  • If you are running Teleport just roam there's no real kill potential in a Lux without a lot of AP running teleport in a mid lane

VS

Ryze

Hard

  • Extremely hard to burst down after a point
  • Scales much more noticeably than you do
  • Has very high combo potential(which Lux is weak to)
  • Has a skillshot-less snare which is dangerous with ganks i.e. a Ryze-Maokai combo will simply camp you and leave you gold/exp starved
  • I would simply never pick Lux versus Ryze and I never have so not much insight about this lane

VS

Swain

Medium

  • You must mitigate all of his sources of DoT damage with Prismatic Barrier and trade back with your Lucent Singularity, Light Binding, and auto attacks
  • He is extremely hard to burst down since most Swains will build tanky after level 6 while still dealing tons of damage3078_32.png
  • You must farm more than him while denying his source of farm. He cannot roam very efficiently and his farming is subpar apart from auto attacks. Abuse both factors and you should win the lane

VS

Vladimir

Medium

  • To beat this matchup, simply poke him from afar with E and trade with Q + E + W in mid-long range to trade efficiently

  • Never use your full burst on him unless you know his pool is down

VS

Yasuo

Hard

  • The Yasuo matchup primarily revolves around baiting out his wind wall so you can actually harass him
  • One good way to bait his wall is to snare him and then auto-attack him(don't use E) since he'll usually wall the E over the snare
  • Avoid upfront confrontations and focus on farming from afar because you'll be more useful late game

Early Game Back to Top

  • Focus on farming until level 6
  • Roam at level 6
  • Try to set up ganks with your jungler on the opposing mid lane
  • Stay alive throughout your laning phase
  • Wait until mid game

Middle Game Back to Top

  • Lux proves to be a force during this phase of the game
  • Roam and pick off enemy champions
  • Focus primarily on skirmishes but team fights prove to be good also
  • Avoid upfront confrontations with enemy champions and try to not facecheck. A lux caught in the midst of battle will be destroyed
  • Snipe from far away, cast spells from far away
  • Look carefully during team fights/skirmishes for any champion low on health and snipe them
  • Avoid being in the middle of fights, snipe, pay attention, win fights

Late Game Back to Top

  • Still a shining moment for Lux if she is six-items before the enemy mid lane
  • If the enemy mid lane also has six items it is more than likely he/she will have much, much higher burst than you as an AP champion since Lux's late game use isn't as great
  • Focus on poking for towers with blue buff(since you have spammable spells and a 24s CD ultimate @ 40% CDR)
  • Try to bait barons during this time and pick off any stray supports or adcs that are trying to kill the ward/ward themselves
  • Focus very carefully on snaring the right people and on using your Prismatic Barrier to mitigate large amounts of damage as it has a base 360 shield + 0.7 AP ratio which proves to be a significant shield. Prismatic Barrier is actually extremely vital to land, almost as important as all your other skillshots

About Me Back to Top

Hey I'm "NotButter" on the North American server. I was about 2230+ Season 2 with Penta Diamond (Diamond in Soloqueue, two diamonds in 3s, two diamonds in 5s) and mained AP mid for a large majority of it. I typically provide help to my friends as they ask(granted it's not excessive) and provide neat tricks here and there. I was the AP mid for UnderRated Gaming's A team(the very first LoL team they recruited) and proceeded to leave that team and become the AP mid for Rev Gam1ng which is no longer alive today. I have been in scrims versus well-known teams and played against their mid laners and was on par for the most part(after my first encounter in IEM Singapore Qualifiers which went horribly).

I stream occasionally on www.twitch.tv/notbutterz so feel free to check that out & follow due to my sporadic streaming times!
