Summoner Spells Back to Top

11.png - Necessary when jungling, use it to clear the jungle quicker and get levels faster. Also used for Baron and Dragon control.

6.png - Ghost allows you to chase down enemies and just stick to them to hopefully secure a kill.

Other useful summoners:

3.png - Amazing for ganking but Volibear's natural CC should be enough to do the job, only take this if the enemy team is extremely mobile and slippery such as: 92_icon_64.png55_icon_64.png, and 105_icon_64.png

12.png - If you want to be a jerk about map control, you can take tele. However this leaves you at a disadvantage when getting piled on by many other champions. Useful for saving towers and split pushing if that is what you will be doing.

4.png - Replaces Ghost with Flash if you feel like you need a much quicker escape than ghost. It is also a great spell for chasing down enemies but ghost will let you keep sticking to them.

~Marks~

greater-mark-of-attack-speed.png
Greater Mark of Attack Speed

Attack speed marks are mainly for clearing the jungle faster and procing your W faster. These are usually your best bet.

greater-mark-of-attack-damage.png
Greater Mark of Attack Damage

Attack Damage marks also help you clear the jungle at a much faster rate. You won't be able to proc your W as fast but these are just as effective.

greater-mark-of-armor-penetration.png
Greater Mark of Armor Penetration

These are your last resort marks if you don't have anything else. They don't help you clear the jungle too much but they do let you do more damage to enemies. Only take as a last resort or if you are fighting Rammus.

~Seals~

greater-seal-of-armor.png
Greater Seal of Armor

Armor seals are really useful because they allow you to not take as much damage in the jungle. It is also very good for early and late game fights due to there always being an ad carry. These just help you negate damage.

~Glyphs~

greater-glyph-of-scaling-magic-resist.pn
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist

These Glyphs are simply here to scale into late game. AP Carries are generally late/mid game characters and these glyphs help you negate some of that damage.

~Quintessences~

greater-quintessence-of-attack-damage.pn
Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage

These are just for ganking and clearing a bit faster. They help you damage just like AD marks would do, these are just better.

greater-quintessence-of-attack-damage.pn
Greater Quintessence of Health

Good surviveabilty and lets you tank a lot more than normal, also scales really well with your W.

These Masteries are oriented to survive the jungle while also being able to be pretty tanky early and late game.

Summoner's Resolve - For the 10 gold per smite.

Durability, Veteran's Scars, and Juggernaut - These are for the extra health because Volibear loves health (his W damage scales off of health).

Tough Skin & Bladed Armor - This is for killing jungle creeps and surviving the jungle more.

Hardiness - The armor is amazing in the jungle and can be very useful for 1v1ing enemies.

Tenacious - This makes it so you can get cced, and get out of it to quickly help your team more. Combined with Mercury Threads you can be virtually impossible to lock down.

Legendary Armor - When you start getting some armor and MR this is going to help you get even more!

Offense tree - Simply there for late game armor pen and jungle clearing.

Chosen_of_the_Storm.jpg

Passive: Chosen of The Storm

"When Volibear's health drops below 30% of his maximum health, he will heal for 30% of his maximum health over the next 6 seconds."

Volibear's passive is amazing. It is a built in Mundo ult that can let you do ridiculous things. It is great for 1v1 fighting because having low health baits people to you, they try to fight you and boom your passive goes off, healing 30% of your health and allowing you to win the fight. This is also great for tanking down turrets or baron/dragon.

Rolling_Thunder.jpg

Rolling Thunder

"For the next 4 seconds, Volibear will gain 15% movement speed. This bonus increases to 45% movement speed when headed toward a nearby visible enemy champion. Additionally, Volibear's next autoattack during this time will deal bonus physical damage and will fling the target behind him."

This is your ganking and chasing tool. Simply pop this right before running into a lane and throw people everywhere. Make sure to set it up so you throw the enemy toward your teammate, or if they are in trouble, away. It is also a great at escaping from fights.

Frenzy.jpg

Frenzy

"PASSIVE: Volibear temporarily gains bonus attack speed after an autoattack. This bonus stacks up to 3 times and lasts for 4 seconds."

The passive of frenzy allows you to clear the jungle much faster because of the attack speed increase. It also allows you to win fights.

"ACTIVE: While Volibear has 3 stacks of Frenzy, he can activate this ability to bite a target enemy. The stacks won't be consumed. The bite will deal physical damage that scales with his own bonus health. This damage will in turn be increased by 1% for every 1% of the target's missing health."

This active is freaking amazing for 1v1 fighting and clearing big buffs and dragon/baron. Its damage scales off of health (and being Volibear you will be building a lot of it) it also scales off of how much health they have lost. It is basically a Garen ult on your W. Use it to quickly execute people that are low and win fights like a boss.

Majestic_Roar.jpg

Majestic Roar

"Volibear lets out a powerful roar that deals magic damage and slows nearby enemies for 3 seconds. Minions, monsters and pets are also feared for 3 seconds."

This is your main jungle clearing tool. It fears the mobs so they can't damage you. It also applies a slow that allows you to keep someone next to you when ganking or keep them away from you when running. When chasing with rolling thunder make sure to use this to slow them so you can catch up to them.

Thunder_Claws.jpg

Thunder Claws

"For the next 12 seconds, Volibear's autoattacks will blast his target with lightning that will also bounce to up to 3 nearby enemies. Each bolt of lightning will deal magic damage and will only hit each target once."

This is one of Volibear's biggest damage tools. It does a set amount of magic damage per auto attack that jumps to nearby enemies. It can be great for teamfighting to get just that extra damage on the enemies. It is also great for 1v1 situations so you can deal more damage. This ultimate is very good with attack speed but you should never build AP just for this and roar.

~Skill Sequence~

Rolling_Thunder.jpg>Majestic_Roar.jpg>Thunder_Claws.jpg>Frenzy.jpg

1v1 Fighting

When fighting with Volibear auto-attacking is your best friend. You want to start by just hitting the enemy then when you feel they are running throw them back with Rolling Thunder, slow them with Majestic Roar and pop your ultimate and just keep auto-attacking. When they get low enough (about 15% health) use your frenzy to finish them off or bring them low enough for a few auto attacks. This will usually land you a kill unless you are against a super tank (like Malphite).

Rolling_Thunder.jpg>Ghost.png>Thunder_Claws.jpg>Majestic_Roar.jpg>Frenzy.jpg

Teamfighting

Teamfighting on Volibear is very fun to do. You should always pop your rolling thunder and Ghost and either rush to the enemy carries or peel for your carries. Throw people into your team, or off of your carries to usually secure a kill. Pop Thunder Claws as soon as possible and just start auto attacking. Use your Majestic Roar to slow as many people as possible and hit a low health carry with your frenzy. Remember YOU ARE THE TANK. Tank everything and anything.

~Starting~

1039_64.png 2003_64.png

Hunter's Machete and 5 Pots

This is your classic jungle start in season 3/pre-season. You mainly buy this to clear your jungle faster and have the machete in case you get ahead, allowing you to build it into a spirit item later.

3096_64.png

Philosopher's Stone

The mana and health regen on this item makes your sustain amazing. It also provides money every ten seconds which allows you to build items. It is also great to buy because you will be getting shurelya's later on.

~Core~

3083_64.png

Warmog's Armor

Warmog's is necessary on Volibear. I repeat, necessary. It gives him massive health regen and massive health to go along with it. Warmog's also greatly amplifies your Frenzy damage.

3022_64.png

Frozen Mallet

Frozen Mallet is amazing on volibear. It give you more health, damage, and an amazing slow. When using this item no one will get away from you. It give you bulk to survive with and to do even more damage with your frenzy. It also gives you a small boost on your AD to murder people with.

3069_64.png

Shurelya's Reverie

This item along with frozen mallet allows you to stick to your targets with ease. It also provides cooldown reduc to bite people more, health to survive more, and all around great utility for your whole team to disengage/engage.

3026_64.png

Guardian Angel

Guardian Angel is amazing on Volibear. It give you defenses, a second life, and it just pisses people off. Even if the enemy team manages to kill you they have either: wasted their time killing you and not your carries, or wiped out your team. Guardian Angel will make these situations either amazing or crap depending which it is.

~Situational~

3207_64.png

Spirit of the Ancient Golem

This item is great to have... if your ahead. I believe that this item is a little too expensive for what it gives and although it is good, getting it when you are behind or on par is a bad idea. I would almost always rather buy a warmog's or frozen mallet over this item.

3005_64.png

Atma's Impaler

This item is great to have once you have built a warmog's and a frozen mallet. However, you should never buy this item over a tankier item unless your team needs help damaging. This item and Wit's end make you a threat to the enemy team, making them HAVE to focus you and taking the focus off of your carries.

3091_64.png

Wit's End

This item is amazing on Volibear. The faster you can attack with your ultimate on, the better. It also helps you proc your Frenzy more often and just bite people in the face.

3056_64.png

Ohmwrecker

Ohmwrecker is good to dive turrets really hard. Now that it builds out of Philostone it can be very useful. However, I personally do not enjoy diving very much so this item isn't that useful to me, but if you like to dive, get it.

3065_64.png

Spirit Visage

The lack of good MR items now saddens me. However, Spirit Visage is a very useful item on Volibear. It makes his passive heal 15% more of the 30% it already heals while also providing a good chunk of MR.

VS

Amumu

Medium

Amumu is really easy to bully in the jungle and although he is a great 1v1 fighter he probably won't beat you in a fight unless he burns everything, and even then you will probably win.

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

Cho'Gath is really annoying. He will almost always have more health than you in the jungle and will easily fight you with his natural high damage. His finishing move is much stronger than yours (feast) and he is just plain annoying.

VS

Darius

Medium

Pre 6 Darius will be a breeze to fight, after that he has a much stronger finishing move than you and you will probably lose at that point. Try to shut him down by catching him at red or blue.

VS

Diana

Easy

Diana is a very good 1v1 fighter but you should be able to just tank all of her damage and kill her. Be careful though, if she has Items she could probably handle a 1v1 against you.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Mundo will likely counter jungle you and you should watch out for that. Keep wards in your jungle and shut him down when you can or else he will get really annoying. You should be able to beat him in a 1v1 pretty easy however.

VS

Elise

Easy

Elise is not a very strong jungler, use that to your advantage. Murder her when you see the chance, there is almost no way she will win a 1v1 fight. She does have much (much) higher sustain than you so watch out for that, and don't allow her to poke you with Q.

VS

Evelynn

Medium

She is very squishy but mobile. She will be ganking much more often than you and you should always be looking to counter gank. you can pretty easily beat her in a 1v1 fight unless she is fed.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Medium

Fighting fiddlesticks shouldn't be too much of a problem. Right when he starts to drain throw him with your Q this will negate most of his damage. Also make sure not to fight him near jungle camps.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Fiora jungle is strong and her ultimate will most likely change a few fights to be in her favor. Try not to fight her too much but don't be scared of her either.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Gangplank will be a breeze to fight. The only time he could [maybe] beat you in a fight is late game, but at that point you should be tanky as hell.

VS

Garen

Medium

He can be annoying but shouldn't be too hard to fight. Your passive should keep you alive from his execute and you will usually end up winning, try to fight him pre 6 however.

VS

Hecarim

Medium

Early game you should be able to beat him, late game you will have more damage but he will have the tank advantage usually. If he builds tri force he can be annoying but don't worry too much about him.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

Jarvan's early game damage is ridiculous, but your passive should be able to keep you alive. Thismatch upis pretty even but Jarvan has the damage advantage while you have the tank advantage.

VS

Jax

Medium

Jax is not the strongest fighter pre 6 and pre tri force. Try to fight him then, when he uses his dodge roar to slow him and move away to avoid the stun. DO NOT auto attack him at this point or he can win fights.

VS

Kha'Zix

Easy

Kha'Zix is an assassin, but not nearly enough of one to kill you. Unless he gets really ahead you shouldn't have a problem fighting him.

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

This guy is just annoying as hell. His 1v1 fighting is ridiculous and even though you can usually beat him he is way toslipperyto actually kill. He will snowball his team hard even if you can get him a bit behind and will become a gigantic nuisance late game.

VS

Malphite

Hard

Malphite isn't that strong of a 1v1 fighter but he will be very difficult to kill. Volibear wins in damage almost always but killing him will just be impossible. Shut him down in his jungle or with the help of your team.

VS

Maokai

Medium

Bully the crap out of him. He can't do crap without his jungle farm and make sure to counter gank. Usually his ganks will lead to a kill so if you can stop this make sure you do!

VS

Master Yi

Easy

He is way too easy to kill in the jungle and his ganks suck, go ahead and invade him.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

Nautilus won't be a very big problem until late game. Just as you would do against Maokai make sure to counter gank and bully the crap out of him.

VS

Nocturne

Hard

This guy is very strong at 1v1 fighting and will probably win once he gets a few attack speed items. Make sure you get help from your laners if you meet him in your jungle somewhere and try not to feed him and let him snowball. Counter gank when he ganks.

VS

Nunu

Easy

Nunu will die to you almost instantly, bully him a lot.

VS

Olaf

Hard

His true damage and life steal can turn most fights around into his favor. He can also get away pretty easily because his ult stops your throw back, my advice is to not fight him.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

He shouldn't be too much of a problem but make sure to peel him off of your carries late game or he will really help his team dominate team fights.

VS

Rammus

Medium

Rammus will almost always get away from you but he isn't very difficult to fight. You will, in a sense, be killing yourself when he is in his thornmail form. When fighting rammus try to get a more AP oriented team so he is forced to build MR and not Armor, because armor will give him a ton of AD.

VS

Rengar

Medium

Even after his nerfs rengar's early damage is ridiculous and you probably shouldn't fight him. Don't let him get fed and you should be good.

VS

Riven

Hard

Riven's naturally high damage and her ult will likely get her to win fights. Her execute will usually make it so you can't use your passive to its full extent and will likely end up killing you.

VS

Sejuani

Easy

Sejuani is very easy to fight early game but she will probably get away. Late game she will probably change a lot of teamfights into her team's favor but she can be easily shut down in the jungle.

VS

Shaco

Hard

He is just annoying as hell. When going against Shaco make sure you start red and have your lanes help you out a bit more so you can save smite. Then go directly to blue and take that with your smite. This lowers the chances of him invading you and picking up first blood. Use alternate routes so you can avoid boxes. Remember, your roar will fear his clone and not him so if you are having trouble check it like that.

VS

Shen

Medium

Shen will win early damage trades but will usually not pull off a kill on you. You can however pull off a kill on him so don't be afraid to fight him.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

Shyvana will counter jungle you to hell so make sure you clear stuff and gank. Her ganks will be mediocre and you can probably countergank and win.

VS

Singed

Easy

He is way too easy to kill when you play volibear. Just keep him next to you with your slow and throw and DO NOT chase him.

VS

Skarner

Medium

Skarner will beat you in fights early game and can potentially kill you. Against Skarner I suggest not running unless you areabsolutelysure you can not win. running will just end up getting you permaslowed by his Q and killed.

VS

Trundle

Hard

His 1v1 fighting is ridiculous and fighting him is not advised at all. He will leech all of your AD and even tanky stats, letting him win.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Early game killing him will be a breeze. Late game he will be in a huge carry state and should not be fought 1v1.

VS

Udyr

Medium

Phoenixform - Udyr shouldn't be too hard to fight in this form and will likely not kill you.

Tiger form - Tiger form Udyr will be very difficult to kill because of the amazing amount of damage he does with it.

VS

Vi

Medium

~Will be placed later~

VS

Volibear

Medium

All depends on your timing and skill.

VS

Warwick

Hard

He will outsustain you in a fight and you should not fight him 1v1. Make sure to interrupt his ult with your throw when he jumps a carry of yours. If he ults you don't worry too much.

VS

Wukong

Easy

Wukong won't be too much of a problem to fight and you really shouldn't be scared of him.

VS

Xin Zhao

Medium

XIn's early game damage is ridiculous and he will likely win a fight with his third hit sustain. He also has more killing potential than you. Make sure to counter gank and shut him down early.

VS

Zed

Medium

Once he hits level 6 you shouldn't fight him. He can shred you with his passive and ridiculously high damage. Just play safe against him, remember his ganks suck so don't be too passive and make sure to gank a lot.

Jungle Route Back to Top

Simply go through a standard jungle route:

Wolves>Blue>Wraiths>Wolves>Red>Wraiths>Gank/Golems

You want to make sure you are level 4 before ganking, this will let you have two points in your W so you can secure kills while also getting your rolling thunder at four. Only grab mini golems if you need level 4 or all of your lanes are pushed.

Exceptions:

Against Shaco:
Wraiths>Red (SMITELESS)>Blue>Wolves>Wraiths>Gank/Golems

Shaco is a jerk. Deny him his first blood/red/blue buff steal by starting red, get a little more help so you can get it smiteless and then go directly to blue, use your smite to clear it. Make sure to counter gank when Shaco ganks.
