Summoner Spells Back to Top

11.png4.png

Smite is mandatory because we're playing Alistar in the jungle, and no matter how good you think you are, you have to take smite on junglers. It allows you to secure buffs, baron, dragon, and in season 3 without smite Alistar will die in the jungle.

For my other spell I take flash. This is because a flash into pulverize is one of the single best initiations in the game, especially since you can then headbutt the enemy carry way out of position into your team.

Another possibility for your other summoner could be exhaust. I personally don't like it, but it makes your already amazing ganks even more godlike. It just means you lack the ability to flash pulverize to initiate, but if you are able to consistently do your headbutt pulverize combo then it should make up for the lack of flash.

Quintessences
I use movement speed quintessences as they improve your ganking by a lot. This is because you can get up close to pulverize faster with these, and it allows you to chase and wait for cooldowns easier.
Other possible choices could be AP quints if you want to add more damage to your burst while ganking, or attack speed if you felt you needed to clear faster.

Marks
I take attack speed marks because it increases your early clearing speed drastically. I found that when using them, my clear speed improved by ~30 seconds. Previously to this I used health marks, but I now use these because it allows you to clear your jungle faster and so get quicker early ganks.

Seals
I take armor seals as these are pretty much mandatory for any jungler in season 3. This is because the jungle hits much harder, and so you need the increased resistances to survive.

Glyphs
Magic resistance glyphs are my preferred choice, as although they don't provide any bonus to your jungling ability, it helps you when ganking people with burst so you don't get bursted. They also scale well into lategame, and allow you to have some natural resistance to mages.

Utility: 0

2eoh1jt.jpg

With this I like running 9/21/0 for the increased magic penetration in offense, as it causes your ganks to do much more damage by ignoring 8% of your opponents magic resistance. I only take the ability power per level mastery because you are required to get it for the magic penetration. The defensive tree is very good because it allows you free tankiness and tenacity, both of which are very strong on jungle Alistar.

1ext2v.jpg

This second mastery page still uses the same masteries in the defense tree, but instead of getting magic penetration in offense I go for movement speed and increased buff duration in utility. This allows you to gank better as you can move and clear faster, and will also keep your buffs for longer. With these masteries, though, you will do less damage in your ganks without the magic penetration.

Skill 1.png

This skill order gives you much stronger mid game power, as you have more damage with pulverize. If you're using this skill order, you should use the first mastery page, as it is a much more offensive setup.

Skill 2.png

This skill build is more of a defensive/support setup, and should be used with the second mastery page. It allows you more sustained and higher health clear in the midgame, but you will not do as much burst as the other skill order.

Starting Items

    If doing well/getting counterjungled

Situational Items

    More damage
    Tankiness
Early Game

You always want to start with Hunter's Machete and 5 health potions, as this item allows you to clear your jungle much easier than any other choice. Getting boots is not as good as it was in season 2 as everyone's base movement speed is increased.

Your core build that you need to build as soon as possible is boots of speed and a spirit stone. The stats spirit stone gives for its price is very strong on all junglers, and it allows you clear faster and stay on higher health beacuse of the armor and health regen. The boots are to improve your ganking ability.

Sightstone

If doing well, you should buy a sightstone at this point. The increased map control this item gives you is invaluable, and will assist you when you are looking to gank and countergank. I wouldn't upgrade it into a ruby sightstone this early, as the 600 gold cost would be better spent on building into a shurelya's reverie or  boots of mobility. If you feel your team needs the vision, i.e. lanes aren't warding, people have no map awareness etc, you could buy the ruby sightstone just so you can assist your team in watching the map, as I find people's map awareness improves if they can actually see what's going on, rather than responding to blind pings.

Another situation in which I would get a ruby sightstone is if I was getting counterjungled heavily. This is because it will allow you to ward your own buffs, so you should be able to see if any of them are getting taken. If you feel comfortable remembering the timers on your buffs, you can ward all but one entrance to your jungle, as then you will know whenever the enemy jungler is in your base. Against someone like Shaco, I still recommend warding your buffs, as he can jump walls to avoid your wards.

Midgame

Your ideal midgame items should be, in this order, boots of mobility > spirit of the elder golem > shurelya's reverie. The tankiness and ganking ability these items together give you far outclasses any other altnernatives at this point of the game. The movement speed from your boots and shurelya's allows you to stick to any enemy while waiting for pulverize cooldown, and spirit of the elder golem increases your clear speed and tankiness drastically.

After this you need to look at your team and the enemy team and decide if you want to get tankier or if you need more damage. For more damage you should go iceborn gauntlet and sunfire cape as this will give you a lot of armour, as well as an AoE slow after hitting someone. Sunfire cape's passive will increase your AoE presence as well, meaning this setup wll make you very scary in teamfights. If you decide you need to be tankier, then you should build a sunfire cape into a runic bulwark. The tank stats these items will give you is amazing for the price, and should allow you to easily become and main tank for your team, especially if you ult.

Boot Enchantments

You should be purchasing boot enchantments sometime after your core build is finished, or possibly before you finish your spirit of the ancient golem if you have some spare gold when at base. Enchantment: Captain, Enchantment: Alacrity and Enchantment: Distortion are my three favourite, for the reasons below.

These are my three preferred enchantments for boots. First of all, Captain. This is very useful on Alistar as you will probably be initiating for your team, and so giving your whole team a movespeed boost when following you in is very helpful. This is my preferred enchantment.
Alacrity is another good enchantment to use. This is because the higher movement speed allows you to gank and initiate easier, especially if your flash is off cooldown. It also allows you to capitalize on enemies being out of position much better, as you will have more chance of being able to catch them with a pulverize.
Enchantment: Distortion is the only other enchantment I would consider taking on Alistar. The reduced cooldown on your flash allows you to initiate with it more often. Out of the three, these are my least favourite boots, as I feel the other two can offer Alistar more utility.

3026_32.png3056_32.png3143_32.png3107_32.png3110_32.png3065_32.png
Situational

These are all very strong last items for Alistar. If you have gone for the damage items, then you should look at buying a guardian angel. This will keep you alive in teamfights and allow you to keep putting out your high AoE damage and cc. If you want to get tankier, you should look at randuins omen and frozen heart to shut down the enemy AD carry, or runic bulwark/spirit visage if you feel you need more magic resistance. If you have gone for the  tankier items, then if you think you can initiate under tower you should consider ohmwrecker. This will allow you and your team to dive effectively, as you do not have to worry about tower aggro for 2.5 seconds.

VS

Amumu

Medium

  • Amumu has much more teamfight presence than you, so be careful of his ult when initiating.
  • You gank much better than amumu, so tell your team to ward and try to countergank him.
  • If he tries to dive, be there to counter it. With your cc you should save your laner and possibly get a kill or two.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

  • Cho'Gath got much weaker with the oracles nerf, as he was very strong at build oracles early and killing your wards.
  • Cho'Gath ganks are worse than yours, as his knockup is much harder to land. Like with most other junglers, you should be looking to countergank them with your large amount of cc.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Hard

  • If Mundo is good, he will make your life hell. He will counterjungle you and try to steal buffs, so make sure you ward your own jungle.
  • Tell your lanes to watch for Mundo counterjungling, as he could get caught out of position if you are warding well.
  • You ganks are much scarier than his, but he outdamages you hard with burning agony. Be careful when counterganking him.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

  • Fiddlesticks is very squishy and blue dependant, and you should, with your team, look to invade him at level 1. If you catch him as he is draining, you can interrupt it and he will pretty much be a free kill for your team.
  • If you are there to countergank Fid, it will most likelygo your way as you can stop his main source of damage in two ways.

VS

Hecarim

Hard

  • This is a scary pony. He outdamages you, outsustains you and with his ult his cc is just as good as yours at pushing someone out of position.
  • Do not countergank Hecarim, as if him and his lane are competent they will turn around and kill you instead.
  • In lategame teamfights, focus on keeping Hecarim off your carry as he is able to do very high burst damage with a trinity force/iceborn gauntlet.

VS

Kha'Zix

Easy

  • Kha'Zix relies on snowballing through ganks, so if you can get there to countergank him you will shut him down.
  • In teamfights try and peel Kha'Zix off your carry, as he can burst them very quickly.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

  • If Lee Sin is good he will be able to dodge your cc by jumping around everywhere, and he does more damage than you.
  • Your best option vs a Lee Sin is to build for tankiness and gank pushed lanes to get your team ahead.

VS

Malphite

Medium

  • Malphite offers a bit more cc to a team as you, and is able to shut down your carries with his R+E combo.
  • Try and snowball your lanes early, as your ganks pre-6 are much stronger than his.

VS

Maokai

Medium

  • Maokai ganks are just as strong as yours, so this will become a contest of who can get the most successful ganks off.
  • Lategame, you contribute the same amount of cc and tankiness to a team as him, so try and catch an enemy carry out of position and force a fight from there.

VS

Nocturne

Hard

  • Nocturne has very high damage output, and will try to counterjungle you. Like with Mundo, ward your jungle and tell you lanes to be prepared.
  • With your cc you can keep him in your jungle and hold him there for long enough for your team to react.
  • Lategame, try and peel him off your carries as he will ult in and try to fear you carry.

VS

Olaf

Hard

  • This viking will make your life hell. He will counterjungle you, outdamage you and kill your lanes.
  • Your cc counts for nothing vs him, as he will ult and therefore ignore the reason you pick Alistar jungle.
  • If there is an Olaf on the other team, I suggest not picking Alistar.

VS

Rengar

Medium

  • Try and countergank Rengar, as he has high damage output but not much cc.
  • You should be able to provide enough cc for your laner to survive, or maybe even get a kill on him.
  • In teamfights, focus on peeling Rengar off your carry.

VS

Shaco

Hard

  • WARD YOUR JUNGLE! Shaco will counterjungle you so hard you will think you don't even have a jungle.
  • Make sure your lanes are prepared to come and help at a moment's notice, and try to use your cc to keep him there. Easier said than done, I know.

VS

Udyr

Medium

  • Udyr clears very fast, so be careful when doing an early gank as it is likely that Udyr will be in a good position to countergank.
  • Make sure your lanes ward well, as if tiger Udyr gets items he will hurt a lot.

Jungle Notes Back to Top

f56251c6b0aedde674c429f01706.jpg

As seen in this image, you start at Wolves and then take Blue Buff. Get your team to help damage these for you, as you will not be able to kill them alone. After getting blue, go to Wraiths, and then Wolves again while you wait for your smite cooldown. Once you kill Wolves for the second time, your smite should be off cooldown, so go to red buff. You should be able to kill this while staying on about half health, so with a health potion and your E you should be on decent health. Once you have killed red, go and kill wraiths again, and this will get you to level 4, leaving you in the perfect position to gank.

Buff Timing

When jungling, you should always try and remember the respawn times of your buffs, dragon, baron, and the enemy buffs if you take them. As a rule of thumb, the first buff taken respawns at 7:20, the second at 8:30 and then the rest five minutes from the previous time. If you see an enemy ganking a lane far away from one of their buffs that is about to respawn, feel free to invade and steal it. Make sure your lanes are ready to react though, as there is nothing worse than getting found in the enemy jungle by top and mid, while your lanes are obliviously farming.

Respawn Timers
Wraiths: 0:50m
Wolves: 1:00m
Double Golems: 1:00m

Blue Buff: 5:00m
Red Buff: 5:00m

Dragon: 6:00m
Baron: 7:00

When one of the major objectives dies, try and get into the habit of saying when it will respawn in chat. This will provide a point of reference that your team can refer to, to see when they will be needed at the next dragon or baron.

Extra Notes Back to Top

Try and get your heabutt>pulverize combo down, as it will make you so much better at ganking and initiating. Here is a tip that should help:

"I am in NZ and play on NA servers, get roughly 180ms ping, yet I can do the combo 80% of the time. What I've found to be the most important is to be in range when you W, then hit Q almost straight away and it works. If you are out of range of your W at the start, it becomes much more difficult to time."

About me

When you look at my ranked stats, you will see that I have only played one game as Alistar. This is because Ali is pretty much perma banned, and people dodge when I pick him :(   I have, however, played him i over 100 normal draft pick games, so I have had plenty of experience with Alistar. I am just starting to play ranked again in season 3, after dropping to below 900 in season 2 because I was playing when I shouldn't have been, but now am gradually climbing up.

Anyway, thanks for reading my guide and have fun with jungle Alistar in season 3!
