Summoner Spells Back to Top

This is really the only setup that works for Riven in Solo Que.

14.png- Is for the true damage burn to help finish off opponents.

4.png- is for escapes or initiation.

12.png- Can be good for Team Play in ranked 5's if your team has good coordination. Can be used with the combo below for easy double kills bot lane.

Pro Tips for using 4.png. Flash can be used as a really good initiation tool. What I like to do is R-Q-Q-4.png-W-Q-R-E then repeat as necessary. I do that to open up on a whole team for MASSIVE burst and CC as well as on 1 target for a easy kill.

Runes Back to Top

  • 9x
+0.95 attack damage Greater Mark of Attack Damage
  • 9x
-0.83% cooldowns Greater Glyph of Cooldown Reduction
  • 9x
+1 armor Greater Seal of Armor
  • 3x
+2.25 attack damage Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage

I think these runes are the best for maximizing Riven's damage potential. Since Riven scales HEAVILY off of your  max AD this allows you to get your passive up and still remain tanky through Armor and cooldown blues and yellows.

I strongly believe this is the most efficient way to setup riven's mastery page. The points in the Offensive tree give you a lot of killing power as well as farming potential.

The points in defense get you hp,  armor and mr.

This setup is the only way to use Riven's skills at the moment, you could argue that you want a second point in E before maxing W but i find maxing W second for a shorter cooldown is necessary.

Q has the highest damage overall out of all the ability's. Make sure that you are auto-attacking in between Q's to maximize your damage output.

W Short  AoE stun that gives you a lot of control over the flow of a battle.

E Really Really good dash that also gives you an AD scaling shield.

R One of the best ultimate's on a AD bruiser in this game IMO. Gives you a burst of AD that greatly increases your overall damage. Also has a second activate for a high damage nuke.

Some combo's I use.

E-Q-Q-W-Q - For when you are harassing. Make sure to auto in between.

R-E-Q-Q-W-Q-R - This will probably get you a kill in lane.

R-E-Q-Q-4.png-W-Q-R - For initiation and killing power.
E-Q-Q-Q - To run away lol.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Ok. depending on how you are doing in lane depends on what you build. If i am CRUSHING the damage I just rush a tiamat. If i am getting crushed i go double dorans. If i just need sustain i go vamp scepter.
Go this against Early Game Heavy Damage laners such as Garen, Renekton, Etc
Agressive start. Also leads into Blood Thirster or Tiamat.
Standard start for most people. Gives HP, Damage, Sustain, the works.

Core Items

These are your 2 core items. Get hydra then brut.
A core build might look something like this.

Situational Items

I don't particularly like getting this item because of the price for what it gives. But if the enemy team is going a double AP comp this item works out really really well.

Nothing really to say here. Just follow my build path and you should do fine. If you have any question let me know in the comment section.

VS

Akali

Easy

84_icon_64.png- This champion can be a problem at level 6 due to her unlocking her 3 dashes. To be honest I really haven't had a problem against her. if she goes in on you just W-Q-Q-Q-E and walk away. If she follows with ult just use your ult and blow her up.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

31_icon_64.png- Early to mid game you absolutely CRUSH this champion. Your high damage melts his hp in seconds. Late game you might not be able to kill him as fast as you would like but your goal isn't to kill him late game anyways. Dodge ruptures.

VS

Darius

Medium

122_icon_64.png- I've had some problems with this champion. Mainly because his Q + passive melts your E shield and when he hits 6 he can kill you pretty easily. I would suggest asking for jungler assistance or try to shut him down pre-6. Pre-6 should be all yours.

VS

Elise

Medium

60_icon_64.png- A common top pick recently. She is really annoying with Q spam. You can easily fight her early out IE levels 3-5. If you can kill her you can snowball the lane but she still does a pretty high amount of damage. She will also E your ult.

VS

Garen

Hard

86_icon_64.png- This is like the bane of riven in my opinion. All this guy will do is silence you and spin to win. You might be able to kill him as soon as you hit 6 but he has a LOT of armor to burn through so it might bechallenging. Try asking for your junglers assistance.

VS

Jax

Hard

24_icon_64.png- What's that? You want to auto attack? Nah. This champion will melt your face after 6. His counter strike will negate pretty much all of your damage and he will destroy you. Do not let him snowball, try to get a kill pre-6. If they pick jax don't pick riven.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

121_icon_64.png- In my opinion this is a skill matchup. Who ever is the better player is going to win this. I just won a game vs a kha'zix and can clearly see that he could be a problem for riven if played correctly. What I did to win was harass him a TON during levels 1-3 then I went in for a kill at 5. At level 6 he has a LOT of really annoying poke with a evolved W but other than that he doesn't do a lot. Stay within minions pre-6. Stay away from minion's post 6. Don't kite him into bushes.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

64_icon_64.png- I don't see a lee top lane very much anymore but it is pretty annoying to fight as riven. His E will slow you down and also slow your auto's down to make it hard to auto after a ability. You can kill him if you are smart and dodge a lot of his abilitys.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

76_icon_64.png- Tanky Nid has been a common thing now. Pre-6 she will just poke you with spears and run away. So the best thing to do is to go in and combo her down to force something out of her. At 6 you can fight her with your ult and combos. I personally have no problem fighting a nidalee.

VS

Olaf

Hard

2_icon_64.png- GG you lose. Olaf will CRUSH riven almost everytime. His E and Q both chunk your HP and he can keep you near him by spamming Q at you if you keep getting hit. I would strongly suggest you NOT pick riven when seeing the enemy picked olaf. Ask for jungler assistance if you were brave enough to pick riven vs olaf.

VS

Renekton

Medium

58_64.png- Snowbally lane. Who ever gets a kill or gets a gank first is going to win this. A easy way to win is to harass level 1 to get him to 60%, then when you hit 2 grab stun and use everything possible on him.

VS

Wukong

Hard

62_icon_64.png- Man. I don't know what it is but i usually lose against Monkey King a lot. He has a gap closer, a high damage single target nuke and a AoE CC ultimate. He also has a pretty reliable escape. You might be able to do high damage to him early but mid-late game he is going to crush you if he has any sort of lead. Ask for jungler assistance.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

157_64.png- This match-up really depends on you. What you need to do is hit him with a Q or a auto to pop his shield then back up until your cd's are back up. After that you should be able to just standard combo him to death. If he kills you, you will probably need your junglers help, because you both snowball pretty hard. Also make sure you dodge his tornado.

Early Game Back to Top

The early game for 92_icon_64.png is all about farming and applying pressure to your enemy. The reason behind getting red elixir is so that you can kill your opponent with the burst of AD and HP that it gives  you.

You should be farming and going in hard when you can.

Be wary of jungler ganks.

Mid Game Back to Top

At this point in the game you should have 1038_32.png+1053_32.png or 3134_32.png. You should be hitting pretty hard. If your lane is still failing then just farm hard until you can get back into the game.

If lane phase is over that's when you want to go HARD in team fights. Lead in with the R-E-Q-Q-4.png-W-Q-R combo if you are confident, if not just let your team engage and then go hard after.

Once you have played Riven enough you will be able to judge wether or not you can go hard.

Late Game Back to Top

Late game you should have most of your build completed and do TONS of damage.

You can probably kill the AP mid, the ADC, or the Support in about 1-2 combos.

if you are Really Really far ahead you can probably 1v5 the enemy team and kill atleast 2 people.

Not much to say here. Just focus up and play well.

Solo Queue Tips. Back to Top

I added in this section to throw in some tips for new players or players just getting into ranked. Or someone that wants tips for solo queue.

1: Always learn from every game. Even if you are mad at your team/depressed/whatever, make sure you learn something. You won't get better unless you learn.

2: Don't rage at your team, I don't care if they are raging at you or w/e. Do not rage at your teammates. Put them on ignore and move on.

3: If your team is behind and you are confident enough to take charge and call plays, then do it.

4: If someone d/c's, don't just say GG we lose. Try to boost morale by ensuring your team that you can still win 4v5. I've done it so can you.

5: If you don't get the role you want in champion select don't say, "gg we lose i can't play my best role". Try going for another role your confident in. Or if you aren't confident then ask to play support.

6: Don't blame your elo on trolls/feeders/afkers. There is a 44% chance you'll have a troll on your team because you are on it.

7: Try and have fun as well. You have to remember this is a game. If you aren't a pro you shouldn't take the game 100% seriously. Enjoy what you are playing. That's why it was made.

Hope these tips helped and I'll add in more when I think of more.
