Summoner Spells Back to Top

Suggested summoners

14.png Ignite

  • True damage DoT that is very useful for securing kills during all phases of the game.
  • Applies a 50% healing debuff.

4.png Flash

  • Can be used both aggressively and defensively.
  • Very useful for escaping ganks or getting to safety during teamfights.
  • Lets you catch up to people.
  • Lets you position yourself better if you're out of position.
  • 4.png + Dark Flight is a very scary long range initiate combo.

6.png Ghost

  • Better than flash during extended skirmishes and teamfights.
  • Good at long-distance chasing or escaping.
  • Ghost is even better now that it got buffed in 3.14, so it's an even more viable choice.

12.png Teleport

  • Very useful for when you're splitpushing.
  • You can splitpush and teleport to a teamfight in an instant.
  • You can also teleport to lanes to start splitpushing.

3.png Exhaust

  • Good against champions that like to all-in or excel in extended fights like 85_64.png and 24_64.png.
  • Ignite should still be preferred over exhaust in most cases. Only take it if you know you're team is going to need it for teamfights.

Aatrox_Passive.png Blood Well

Passive: Whenever Aatrox uses an ability that costs health, he stores 100% of the health cost into his Blood Well (30 + 45 x level). If Aatrox has not dealt or received damage in the last 5 seconds, his Blood Well will deplete at a rate of 2% per second.

Upon taking fatal damage, Blood Well activates and places Aatrox in stasis for 3 seconds. Over the stasis duration the Blood Well is emptied and Aatrox restores health (contents of Blood Well + 10.5 + 15.75 x level). Blood Well's activation has a static cooldown and is unaffected by cooldown reduction.

Aatrox passively increases his attack speed by 0.6% - 1.1% (Level 1 - Level 16) for every 2% in the Blood Well.

Cooldown: 225 seconds

  • Blood Well is a very core part of his kit and is one of his best strengths.
  • It's a free revive every 3,75 minutes.
  • It's a free 50% attack speed steroid when fully stacked.
  • Always make sure to spam Dark Flight, Blood Prince and Blades of Torment in order to keep your passive stacked to the maximum.
  • This got nerfed in the 3.13 patch where he no longer gains 1% attack speed starting at level 1 for filling his Blood Well. Now it scales with your level and this hurts his early game potential.

AatroxQ.png Dark Flight

Q: Aatrox takes flight and slams down at a targeted location, dealing physical damage (70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 + 0.6 x AD) in a large area. Enemies in the center of the blast are also knocked up for 1 second.

Cost: 10% of current health
Cooldown: 16 / 15 / 14 / 13 / 12
Range: 650

  • Rank this first for for invading.
  • Very useful initiate tool. Can also be used to escape from bad situations.
  • 4.png + Dark Flight is a deadly long range initiate combo that will catch people off guard.
  • I like to max this second because of reduced cooldown and higher base damage. It'll let me use it more than just once during teamfights and can potentially turn a fight around to your favour.
  • Take care of the 10% health cost and don't use it too prematurely. It might end up getting you killed if you're not careful.
  • It's like a mini-Malphite ultimate.

AatroxW.png Blood Thirst / Blood Prince

W: Toggle Off - Blood Thirst: Aatrox heals himself (20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 + 0.25 x bonus AD) on every third attack. If Aatrox is below 50% health he will heal (60 / 75 / 90 / 105 / 120 + 0.75 x bonus AD) for three times as much.

Toggle On - Blood Price: Aatrox deals bonus physical damage (60 / 95 / 130 / 165 / 200 + 1.0 x AD) on every third attack at the cost of health (15 / 23.75 / 32.5 / 41.25 / 50 + 0.25 x bonus AD).

Cooldown: 0.5 seconds

  • Use Blood Prince to maximize your Blood Well and then switch to Blood Thrist to keep yourself sustained during laning phase.
  • When in need of burst, use Blood Prince to put out as much damage as you can.
  • Aatrox is a deadly low-health duelist because of Blood Thirst keeping him alive. The three times effectiveness when below half health makes him incredibly dangerous to fight as he can heal it all back up almost instantly.
  • It is viable to max this second, first even, but I don't like it. Max this second if you're against a lane opponent you know you can't duel against, but you need to sustain against the harass. The high damage output of Blood Prince can also catch people off-guard if maxed first/second.
  • Blood Thirst / Blood Prince will always proc on your third attack. Attacking a minion twice, then engaging on your opponent for the third attack works and will in most cases help you win a trade.

AatroxE.png Blades of Torment

E: Aatrox unleashes and sends forward the power of his blade, dealing magic damage (75 / 110 / 145 / 180 / 215 + 0.6 x AP + 0.6 x AD) to enemies in a line and slowing them by 40% for a few seconds (1.75 / 2 / 2.25 / 2.50 / 2.75 seconds).

Cost: 5% of current health
Cooldown: 12 / 11 / 10 / 9 / 8
Range: 1000

  • The reduced cooldown, increased slow duration and increased base damage on level up makes this the best choice to max first.
  • Really good for wave clearing and farming from afar if behind.
  • Can be tricky to hit from a long range because of how it narrows down the further it goes.
  • Useful tool to stick to your opponents because of the 40% slow.
  • This got nerfed in the 3.13 patch where the base damage was reduced to reduce his lane harass and poke potential with it.

AatroxR.png Massacre

R: Aatrox draws in the blood of his foes, dealing magic damage (200 / 300 / 400 + 1.0 x AP) to nearby enemy champions. For the next 12 seconds, Aatrox gains bonus attack speed (40% / 50% / 60%) and 175 bonus attack range (325 total range). His attacks are still considered melee.

Cooldown: 100 / 85 / 70 seconds

  • AoE damage, huge attack speed steroid and increased attack range for a fighter champion? It just yells overpowered.
  • Incredibly strong for pushing down towers because of the huge attack speed steroid.
  • Max rank Massacre, coupled with a fully stacked Blood Well, gives Aatrox a whooping 110% increased attack speed.
  • Do not be afraid to use Massacre in order to finish your opponents off.
  • Try to be in range of your opponent(s) so the AoE damage hits them. Since players will most likely build armour to itemize against Aatrox, the AP damage from the AoE will hurt quite a lot.
  • Use the increased attack range to your advantage to kite short-ranged melee bruisers.

Situational Items

You should be able to judge for yourself what you want to build and what you should start with. Take a look at the enemies team composition and plan ahead what you want to itemize.

Start with

Option 1

1054_32.png2003_32.png
  • Currently the standard top lane choice for most champions. Gives you reduced damage against auto attacks and a good amount of health regen to sustain yourself in lane.

Option 2

1055_32.png 2003_32.png
  • Blade can help you get an advantage early because of your having the upper hand in fights. I would only suggest going this first if you're running lifesteal quints as it'll make it so you're able to sustain using this start.
  • Do not pick this against heavy harass champions unless you're planning to duel them level 1 or 2.
  • After patch 3.14, you can now start with a 1055_32.png and a 2003_32.png. This makes this an even more viable start since you have much more sustain with the health potion.

Option 3

1001_32.png2003_32.pngx4
  • Good choice if you need to dodge skillshots or have to catch up to someone.
  • Replace two potions with a ward if you feel like you need vision.

Option 4

2037_32.png2003_32.pngx3
  • If you think you can take advantage of the fortitude potion and get really ahead early on, then go with this start.
  • It's only successful if you can get a level or kill advantage over your opponent.

Option 5

1036_32.png2003_32.pngx3
  • Now that long sword got cheaper in patch 3.14, I find this to be a viable start since you can do it with three points. You could easily upgrade this later into a 1053_32.png for more lane sustain and it's overall pretty good.

Core

Boots

  • 3006_32.png: If you're planning to build Zephyr and want the early attack speed for fights.
  • 3047_32.png: If you're against a heavy AD team and they don't have a lot of CC.
  • 3111_32.png: If you're up against heavy CC or a heavy magic damage team.

Offensive

  • 3035_32.png: If they are stacking a lot of armour.
  • 3153_32.png: Best offensive item choice for 1v1 duels. Will make you incredibly strong if you can get it during laning phase and the active will help with peeling from opponents.
  • 3072_32.png: If you don't find yourself being able to auto attack a lot, but are rather using your spells to harass or push waves, then this is a better choice. It gives a good chunk of AD and very nice sustain.
  • 3074_32.png: If you're planning to splitpush or just want stronger teamfight presence, then this item is much better suited for you. Really good at clearing waves and gives you (something that looks like) an auto attack reset.

Defensive

  • 3143_32.png: If you're facing heavy AD. The active helps a lot against auto attacking champions like 24_64.png and marksmen.
  • 3065_32.png: If you're facing heavy AP. Increases your lifesteal and Blood Thirst by 20%. The 20% cooldown reduction is also incredibly useful for Aatrox since he's resourceless and makes it so he can spam his abilities more.

Situational

  • 3026_32.png: If you're being focused down first or die really quickly in a teamfight, this will help you stay for longer so you can help out your team when you revive back up. Not to mention it annoys your opponents even more because it gives you double revive.
  • 3068_32.png: Useful if you're splitpushing but need armour and health.
  • 3078_32.png: The new version of Trinity Force helps you a lot with mobility, but it's not necessarily needed, not to mention that it costs a bit too much for Aatrox to get. Can be fun to build if you're ahead.
  • 3156_32.png: Get this if you're against a heavy magic burst and still need raw damage.
  • 3172_32.png: If you decide not to go for 3111_32.png and still need tenacity, then Zephyr is a really, really good item for Aatrox. All of the stats are incredibly useful for him and is very effective. The downside for the item is the amount it costs and it might take you some time to get it.

VS

Aatrox

Hard

Shouldn't happen unless you're playing blind pick. Skill matchup, all up to how good you and your opponent are.

VS

Akali

Easy

She's really weak against you early on and you can very easily sustain through her harass. If she survived pre-6, you might be a bit afraid of her potential burst, but other than that the lane should go very smoothly in your favour.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Cho'Gath is really weak early but has very good sustain, luckily for you, your sustain is stronger. Harass him with your Blade of Torment and keep harassing him when he goes for minions.

VS

Darius

Hard

Darius is one of the harder matchups for Aatrox, mainly because of his Attack Speed reduction on his W. Be careful when getting close to him as he can pull you in and easily get free harass on you.

Most suggested is to wait for your jungler to gank and farm from afar using your Blade of Torment.

VS

Diana

Easy

There aren't many top lane Diana anymore, but this matchup can actually go in both favours. If you can get ahead of Diana pre-6, you shouldn't have any problems though.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Dr. Mundo is really weak early as a champion and relies on using his cleavers to farm. You can pressure him and even kill him if he comes too close to you. Be aware that after level 6 the lane will become a lot harder because of his massive sustain from his ultimate. Make sure you have ignite up if you're going for the kill. He can easily kite you and poke so sidestepping is recommended.

VS

Elise

Hard

Elise is a very strong laner and can easily harass you. Your sustain won't mean much if she can zone you out of lane completely. Stack magic resistance as soon as you can and build towards a 3155_32.png and 3111_32.png.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

This lane shouldn't be hard for you at all, but be cautious of his level 1 as he can actually kill you with his high damage and stupid passive. If he maxes W, he will be able to sustain the lane, but with your harass he shouldn't be able to farm.

VS

Garen

Easy

He's a lane bully. Use your Blade of Torment to slow him down when he tries to run at you and harass him with it until he's at a decent enough health for you to all in him. Be cautious of his passive sustaining him as it does give a good amount of health regen.

VS

Irelia

Easy

Skill matchup. This can go both ways. It's a lot about predictions and what you both think you're going to do.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

He's really annoying to go against top lane because of his CC and high damage. He doesn't have much to offer at level 1 and after level 4, so try to trade with him then.

VS

Jax

Medium

This is a skill matchup. Farm from afar and harass him with Blades of Torment. All in him if he's low and be very careful of his counter strike as it will dodge your auto attacks.

VS

Jayce

Easy

Jayce can easily disengage from you and just poke you from afar. Force him to use his E in hammer form and use your Dark Flight to engage on him. He's really squishy and if you're able to stick on him or get him to fight you over an extended period of time, you'll be able to take the lead.

VS

Kennen

Medium

He has a lot of poke and can be very annoying as he can completely zone you out from your minions. Harass and farm using your Blades of Torment and engage on him when he's low enough for your to all in him, preferably with your passive up as it helps a lot to negate his ultimate.

VS

Kha'Zix

Easy

He has an incredibly high burst versus isolated targets and you shouldn't be trying to fight him 1v1 unless he's low enough for you to do so. A good Kha'Zix will be able to kill you.

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

A good Lee Sin will always bring hell to top lane. Be very careful of his Q and E as they can completely crush you because of their damage and attack speed reduction.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

You might face her in top lane once in a while. She's actually not that hard as long as you keep some distance away from her and your own minions and focus on farming. Engage on her using your Dark Flight and be careful of her root and escape.

VS

Malphite

Easy

Even though Malphite has an attack speed reduction, he's actually a very easy matchup for Aatrox. Just max Blades of Torment and harass him using it, he won't be able to do anything against it. Engage on him if you notice he used his abilities on creeps.

VS

Nasus

Easy

You shit on him early. Just harass him out of lane and never let him farm.

VS

Nidalee

Medium

Nidalee can be a bitch. She's ranged harass and can zone you out of lane if you're not careful. She also has really good sustain thanks to her E. She has no escapes pre-6 so use that to your advantage.

VS

Olaf

Easy

lol olaf?

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Pantheon can be a pain in the ass. Just farm and harass using your Blades of Torment, in most cases you won't be able to do much against him because of his ranged harass and stun.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Skill matchup. Has a lot to do with predictions. If he uses his spells on minions, harass him or engage on him. Preferably not when he has his stun up. You have more sustain than him.

VS

Rengar

Medium

Both of your do well early and it can go both ways. Be very wary of his super high potential for burst damage when at max ferocity.

VS

Riven

Easy

Don't let Riven snowball, that's priority number one. As long as you play the lane safely, she'll fall behind by herself and there shouldn't be any problems for you to duel her. She can sustain herself with her shield and duel you with her stun.

VS

Rumble

Easy

Rumble is really weak pre-3 so use that to your advantage and harass him as much as possible early on. This should give you a lead in the lane and he shouldn't be able to farm.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

Popular after the new mastery changes, Shyvana has become a staple in the top lane. She has incredible damage and becomes tankier and tankier as the games goes. Be aware of her early game damage and play accordingly. She has no CC and will most likely max her E (fire breath) to poke and farm the wave.

VS

Singed

Medium

He can be a big pain, but thankfully he's weak early. Harass him and try to get an early kill on him, this will help you snowball and get ahead of him. If not, prepare yourself for a farm fest.

VS

Swain

Easy

Swain has no escapes, neither does he have any escapes pre-6. He can very easily be engaged on and he has nothing to defend himself with except for a delayed root. Just harass him early and force him out of lane. Be careful of his ranged harass and try to keep yourself sustained.

VS

Teemo

Hard

Teemo will just blind you and harass you out of lane, there's not much you can do except for farm from afar with your Blades of Torment.

VS

Tryndamere

Hard

Tryndamere is really scary as he can do a lot of damage when his rage bar is full and after level 6 he is pretty much unkillable. Just turn it into a farm fest or try to get your jungler to help and gank.

VS

Udyr

Easy

Don't duel him early, his tiger stance hits like a truck and is super dangerous. He's very easily kited with your Blades of Torment so harass him using it or when he runs at you.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

Just jump on him. He's super weak against you pre-9 and you have much better sustain than him. Abuse this to the maximum to prevent him from getting lategame status.

VS

Zac

Easy

Zac is weird. He can easily push the lane and sustain himself, but your sustain is still a lot stronger. Harass him as he doesn't do that much damage since he's a champion that likes to focus on building tanky. He shouldn't be able to out-trade you. Be careful of his passive as it's a revive just as yours.

Teamfights Back to Top

  • Dark Flight is a really good initiation tool if your team needs it for the engage.
  • Try to go for their carries if possible. Aatrox can dish out a lot of burst in a short amount of time and should be able to catch people off-guard with it.
  • Don't be afraid to stay in the fight when at low health. Aatrox's Blood Thirst will keep you alive for a good amount of time before you're forced into using Blood Well or have to back off.
  • Peel for your carries if they're having a hard time against the opposing teams bruisers. Even if you're a fighter champion yourself that can carry, it's much better for you to help peeling for your own carries so they can carry with you.
  • Be careful when jumping in the middle of a teamfight. CC can lock you down and you won't be able to do much when you're in Blood Well stasis.
  • If forced into stasis and you know they're going to go for you when you revive, quickly think out a way to escape using your Dark Flight and 4.png if they're still up.
  • Don't engage alone unless you're confident you can kill them by yourself.

About me Back to Top

Summoner name: Mayoi Hachikuji
Region: EUW

Misc.: I'm a jungle main who can play all roles mechanically well and have a great understanding of the game. I'm aiming to hit Diamond 1 by the end of this season. (Managed to hit Diamond 5 with Diamond 3 MMR in S3) Aatrox is one of my favourite champions and I've always loved playing him since his release. I consider him to be one of the strongest champions in League and his unique kit makes him really fun to play.
