Summoner Spells Back to Top

New Runes Back to Top

If you prefer a very aggressive early laning phase then i would take press the attack..otherwise lethal tempo is core on Aatrox(and more fun).

Alacrity vs Bloodline - Either works depending on your playstyle and build path.

Coup De Grace vs Last Stand - Basically if you're not going to win without your jungler..i would take last stand to ensure you finish off your opponent. Coup De Grace helps you dominate your opponent.

Sudden impact vs Taste of Blood - I would take taste of blood vs grasp users and also maybe even bloodline to counteract their damage + healing. Sudden impact helps with all ins and some early invades in your enemie's jungle.

Eyeball Collection vs Zombie Ward - All depends on your play style. Aatrox needs sudden impact and also doesn't benefit from many of the other options. Just take eyeball for more damage in lower mmr and zombie ward in higher mmr. (Diamond+)

R>E>W>Q

With Q having very minimal base ad and now scaling off of total ad you don't need to bother maxing it for anything other than CD which is not optimal.
E not having magic damage is a hit but ultimately you'll need it to trade poke then heal up and wave clear.
R>W>E>Q
Build your passive up with W level 1 and take Q level 2 if you want to try and cheese the enemy. Maxing W first almost always means you want to all in and kill them early with your passive.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Dorans blade provides overall good stats for Aatrox early.
Dorans shield for annoying poke or dangerous all ins.

Core Items

Rush Botrk since it gives you pretty much all you would want on Aatrox *SCROLL DOWN IF YOU JUST WANT TO SEE MY FULL BUILDS*
*2nd buy* Are you doing decent or good in lane? Build BC. Otherwise mallet is very good if you're behind since it will give you more sticking power for both you and your jungler and it also has more health. Remember when you're behind its very hard for you to get kills unless you can pick someone out. FM helps with that.
*3rd buy* You'll almost always want phantom dancer as it will give you amazing dueling stats for its efficiency in gold.
*4TH BUY* Pick whichever one you need first or build my way and go for DD if you're confident in your Aatrox
*Last buy* Whichever one you didn't buy last get it now. By this point you just need survivability since Aatrox doesn't really have anymore power spikes after level 14. or Bloodthirst it up my way
Rageblade is an item you should get only if you can afford it early on in the game like 15-20mins in. You'd have to be REALLY ahead to get away with this item. EDIT: 7.22 i think rageblade is much more rewarding, considering it's amazing duo with lethal tempo. Considering making this a core possibly.
    The go to build: BOTRK -> BOOTS -> BC -> PD(for splitpushing)/Titanic(for teamfighting) -> TANK/MAW -> TANK/DD
    Assassin build
Splitpush/Carry Build Zerk boots -> Tiamat -> Black Cleaver -> Ravenous Hydra -> Steraks -> PD/Tank Shoutout to CoolKippr from EUW for this build
Rush Titanic Hydra -> PD -> Trinity/BC Trinity: Get this when they aren't stacking a lot of armor because it provides a really good boost of stats + health that has good synergy with titanic BC: Obviously get it vs armor stacking opponents
My Crittrox Build Ravenous Hydra -> PD -> IE -> Stattik -> Essence reaver (for CD reduction and 100% crit) Also consider rapid fire cannon for that extra range on ult auto it's pretty crazy
VS Lethality Meta Triforce -> Titanic -> Thornmail -> Dead Mans -> Spirit Visage
    7.22 Build?

Situational Items

Good alternative to black cleaver and takes care of rivens
*Master Yi* Patch 7.14 this item is better than Randuins in every way other than the slow.
Riot really needs to change this so that it works with Aatrox's passive rightfully. It still could be good but without passive Aatrox can't really make a comeback play in almost every case scenario. Unless you're full attack speed on hit don't bother with GA. Or if they have a champ that slows attack speed.
Completely negates thornmail (except grievious wounds) + offers good stats vs ap comps.
Could be good vs full AD and you want to roam/snowball early
This item is viable on the new Aatrox because it gives him many stats that he can take advantage of especially in the mid game. HP, Attack speed, Burst. I tend to get this item in tankier/survivability builds.

7.5 Aatrox still benefits from full AD and some lifesteal so if you get ahead feel free to build damage and snowball your team with some OP dives. *Make sure you have passive stacked*

BUT the biggest part about this change for Aatrox is that he no longer gets punished for building HP. So now most hp items are viable depending on your situation. Most likely black cleaver will always be a nice buy even in a damage build but you should decide whether when to buy it or another item depending on the stats you need. More importantly, depending on what your team needs and how you're doing in lane you should build to your situation.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

Normals when 7.5 comes out. Deny him his passive and bait him with yours in lane. All mediums are skill match ups.

VS

Ahri

Medium

Personally i find this champion annoying on the Lulu level so basically the same thing for her. Ban or make sure they have nothing up..do not frontline.

EDIT 1: Ended up going vs her top 7.8 and just max E to trade the poke and if you get poked out of lane then back and TP. You should have the advantage if you don't get greedy and manage to poke her down with E. Do not all in her until she is at least 50% or you're setting up a gank. In teamfights though don't let her distract you and only focus her if you can Q onto her.

VS

Akali

Hard

Try and win early otherwise she will tear you apart and your team

VS

Camille

Medium

All mediums are skill match ups. This is one of them, try not to trade early unless you have a minion wave. The only time she can really kill you 1 v 1 is pre 6.

EDIT 1:
Make sure to be equal in levels and when you hit 6 you'll always win the 1 v 1. Also, use your healing W while she uses her Q and then switch to damage because she has nothing after that. (KNOW WHEN TO USE YOUR BLOOD THIRST AND BLOOD PRICE. WHEN A CHAMPION ONLY HAS A LIMITED TIME OF POWER ALWAYS HEAL IT UP AND THEN SWITCH TO BLOOD PRICE. For example, Camille Q, Kled W)

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Just make sure you have passive when he has ult 6+

Patch 7.14 this match up gets a bit tricky in the later stages of the game.. be sure to abuse how easy it is to gank him and not let him scale too hard into the later stages of the game. Wits end + Spirit Visage would feel really nice vs him

VS

Darius

Medium

Out trades you early and abuses you not having a free revive plus no more triple healing. Be very careful and if you ask for a gank be sure to be healthy enough to survive.

EDIT 1: After the hotfix the lane feels a lot less punishing, and be sure to get close to him when he Q's and you'll win almost every trade. Make sure to get the wave pushed into you and zone Darius with your passive stacks. You will win every fight with your passive up so take advantage of this. (WATCH FOR GANKS) If you don't punish Darius early you'll regret it especially if he starts to snowball his team.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Take ignite and get a wits end

VS

Fiora

Medium

Reset her passive by walking away and coming back. Max E so if you get zoned from your wave you can still farm. Take exhaust for her all ins and not getting 1 v 2'd if your jungler comes to gank.

EDIT 1: If you're really confident on your ability to trade against Fiora then max W. She can still all in you and win even if you've killed her if you don't pay attention to your revive CD and exhaust CD. Keep in mind when you do have them up you do have the potential to kill her. Just be wary of her parrying your Q so don't use it unless its to run away or get a last auto attack in because it can turn the fight around depending on your HP.

Edit 2: Recent buffs are making it much easier to deal with Fiora. Another skill match up that you'll need to win trades to survive.

Edit 3: Patch 7.14 she got some nerfs and thornmail is a thing so she's so much easier to deal with in the late game PLUS Aatrox has an amazing laning phase vs her if you don't let her get every single vital on you. Just stack your passive and go for an all in because she has no escape. Always Q behind her.

VS

Fizz

Medium

Tricky Tricky...He will always slip away from an all in so get your jungler run him down. Otherwise you can usually zone him from waves pre 6 and deny him a lead.

VS

Galio

Easy

Max W and all in

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Very easy to punish in lane. Make sure to go all in when he Q's a minion and make his lane miserable. When you go all in make sure you know where the enemy jungler is first. I would max W and tower dive the guy once you know you can push him in and he's low enough.

VS

Garen

Medium

Max E because your all ins won't do much with his passive and all plus it slows him down enough for him to not get to you with Q early. Just keep poking him and zoning him away from cs with E or you can decide to push him in and roam. I personally haven't had much experience vs him so i don't know if he's really killable besides level 1-2 when you have the option to cheese with W - Q + Passive. He just becomes annoying later in the game and kind of unkillable since he just runs away with Q.

VS

Gnar

Medium

Build up your passive and heal up any poke he tries to make. You can trade if you land Q and zone him from farm. Keep your space when he goes mega gnar and count the seconds on his cooldowns. Very easy to kill from my experience but he's very useful to his team for ganks and teamfights. Make sure to not go too aggressive when his ult is up, try to walk around it or keep your distance from getting stunned and it should be a won fight.

VS

Gragas

Medium

I'd say he's a lot like Nautilus except you can't dive him. Be careful when he tries to be aggressive in lane since it means you're probably getting ganked.

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

Lmao just don't be stupid and let him poke you for free. You can take ignite and get a free kill with your passive. Make sure to hit Q and not get stunned you bonobo. This lane is bread and butter. Fresh sourdough :)

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Orb walk her ult or take exhaust because she will demolish you at 6. Otherwise your laning is 10/10 vs her. Heal off those tentacles.

VS

Irelia

Hard

If you lose a trade you lose the lane. Please for the love of god do not fight her when she has ult up level 6 unless you absolutely know you can kill her.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

Should be an easy match up but don't get too overconfident because this guy still does a lot of damage early and sets up ganks amazingly. Max E and zone him away while healing his poke damage.

VS

Jax

Medium

Skill match up. This is just about who is better at dueling (1v1) and how you choose to affect your team. The better player wins....when you don't have passive. When you have passive and his E is down this lane is cheese. Later in the game he'll ramp up but by then you're already more useful to your team than Jax. Don't leave him alone in a lane for too long. Or at least make sure you can trade for much more objectives. #1 rule though don't let him open your base.

VS

Jayce

Hard

Not as annoying as Teemo. You have good kill potential so go ignite and dorans shield. In lane he'll poke you down so max W and make sure to heal up by farming those minions. Level 2 you can go in for the kill with your Q W ignite. Watch for the enemy jungler on the map before you try this though. Until you know where the jungler is, don't try this. Ask for ganks because Jayce is really easy to gank and kill. Don't solo dive if he's not low and maybe if you don't have flash. His knock back can make the dive backfire if he doesn't die with ignite. Make sure to close the game out quick because this guy will be annoying to your teammates and could snowball a lead.

Patch 7.14 you'll be seeing this guy a lot more so make sure to rush some early HP like a phage and you should be able to all in and kill him if you don't get poked down.

VS

Karthus

Medium

:/ another teemo. Don't let him zone you too much so you can Q when he ults. Get some jungle pressure so he is at least a bit scared of walking to far forward. Get an early hex drinker and when your jungle ganks its a free kill if you hit Q. You should win this lane if you can out heal his Q's early but given that you don't have that extra attack speed anymore i don't think that's possible. Until he doesn't have mana just walk around and get the cs you can. Once he doesn't have too much mana you can walk up to minions and start pushing him in since he'll try and back.

VS

Kayle

Easy

VS

Kennen

Medium

Max E and trade poke. Counters your teamfighting so try to splitpush.. Which is really hard so make sure you can get your team a lead before Kennen does.

Kennen became easier when dorans shield came out so he's not too much a problem. Get a thornmail.

VS

Kled

Medium

This champion is so much fun to beat since he really thinks Aatrox is a meaningless being. Pretty much get your passive and take him off Skarl. Do not let him fight you first early. After he gets off skarl heal up a bit, zone him, Q on him if he tries to CS, etc. The hard part is when you get jumped on first and he just pressures you out of lane. Don't get baited into a gank and don't try to kill him when he's off skarl when he has W because he could potentially outplay you with his passive. This is just early to mid game....late game he is nothing to you. You can kill him first if you want late game since you'll outscale amazingly well.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

Considered a counter but it's more of a skill match up imo. Bait out her abilities and then all in after you heal up from minions.

VS

Lulu

Hard

Ban this champion or make sure its on your team. Otherwise don't make yourself play against this. If you do just split push or make sure your team is ahead enough to win. DO NOT EVER FRONTLINE VS LULU. Make sure she has no sums or ult before diving.

VS

Malphite

Easy

VS

Maokai

Easy

Watch for ganks.

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

Win trades win lane

VS

Nasus

Easy

As long as you know what Nasus as a champion does then you should be fine in lane and be able to even kill him with an all in early. He can set up ganks somewhat well with W so watch out for that.

VS

Nautilus

Medium

Just farm up and get black cleaver/botrk. If you do decide to trade be sure that you're not going to get ganked because he can easily CC and cancel your Q. Also do not underestimate his early damage, be sure to orbwalk around your minions so he doesn't get to hit the damage from a lot of his abilities. He is a lot more punishing now since you don't have triple healing from W so don't be stupid early. Once you get your tank shredding items...especially late game you will out scale hard. If he buys thornmail just ignore him and kill his team since he won't be able to kill you.

VS

Olaf

Hard

This champion just runs you down and unless you're fed you can't do much about him. Also his early laning is cancer and can snowball if you let him kill you.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Take exhaust. Take the fearless mastery. Aaaand unless he's bad you're going to have a rough time.

VS

Poppy

Medium

One of the more annoying tanks to deal with. Also wins most trades but if you manage to outplay her and win the trades you have a chance. Most importantly watch her cooldowns and passive and she shouldn't be a problem. Fake an all in and try to get her steadfast presence or Q to the side of her (NOT AROUND A WALL) and continue to heal off of her to win a trade.

VS

Quinn

Medium

Skill match up. Manage her cooldowns and know when to take trades/all in. Her low range gives you an opening to Q and finish the job when she doesn't have Q up but bait her Vault first.

VS

Renekton

Hard

You out scale Renekton nicely if he doesn't get fed. Take exhaust if you are more of a passive laner or ignite if you can be aggressive enough to 1 v 1 him. But really teleport is the optimal spell here since you'll need to help your team against this guy early. Somehow he's always able to snowball a team even when behind. Now for laning max W and try to Q when he tries to stun you BEHIND YOUR MINIONS, and use your healing W. After you've won that trade you can all in with your passive. Don't forget this guy can dash through a whole minion wave and flash stun you for a gank set up. Do not tunnel.

VS

Riven

Medium

Take exhaust for her all ins level 6+. Could potentially kill her early with your passive as well. Max W since your E will basically just be a slow vs her shield. Late game she is still a bother but make sure to exhaust her and be tanky to survive through the damage and CC from her team as well. Don't try to fight her if she took ignite..just ask for ganks and get the wave pushing towards you by running away every time she tries to trade into your wave.

EDIT 1: Her all ins are always strong vs you since she doesn't let you get much autos in. I was ahead and i still got cheesed because i let her use a full combo on me(Exhaust and revive was down). So make sure you have those but even then you should be able to win if you're ahead. Try to Q on riven before her third Q and heal up the damage throughout the fight until she tries to run.

VS

Rumble

Easy

Really shouldn't be a problem if you know how to control the lane and properly zone him away. If he's being aggressive then he knows he has jungle support.

VS

Shen

Medium

Level 2 cheese. Get W first and build up that passive. Don't get level 2 counter cheesed with a gank so make sure you know where enemy jungler started.

After some of the changes this lane has become a bit more tricky with bramble vest in play and Shen's high base damage + grasp.

VS

Singed

Easy

VS

Sion

Hard

Annoying lane but if you manage to orbwalk all of his abilities and out trade him then you're doing great. Just be sure not to get surprise gank. You can usually turn a fight around 1 v 2 but in most cases Sion will bully you and make you feel as if you are an insect. Although once you get tank shredding items and maybe even a rageblade with botrk/Black Cleaver/ Titanic you will shred him. I'm also going to try some movement speed like maybe stormraiders or ghost and see if it helps just dancing around him and auto attacking.

VS

Swain

Medium

Executioners..don't focus him unless you 100% know you can kill him.

VS

Tahm Kench

Hard

Turn around and walk back to base. Only walk up if your jungler is coming and you have passive ready. He will make your life miserable early and mid game. Later in the game you have the potential to outscale since he doesn't really offer much in team fights.

VS

Talon

Medium

Beats your all in once he gets a few levels on his W so try and cheese him early. Be careful of his early level if you don't have passive and especially if he took ignite. Do not chase him unless you know you can kill him.

VS

Teemo

Hard

The lane can go either way. I would recommend maxing E because you'll need it to poke him down. BE CAREFUL do not push the wave with E.. make sure to try and hit as least minions with it as possible. If you manage to get him to AA you once in lane then your minions will attack him and get pushed into you. Make sure you do this so that you aren't zoned from farm. You can easily kill a Teemo with a gank in this situation since you'll have the lane freezed upon your tower and have a lot of time to get the perfect Q. Also i said the lane could go either way because sometimes you'll get pressure from the enemy jungle and being against a fed teemo is not fun. Make sure to get an early spectres cowl or hex drinker. If you know you'll be able to go damage then get a hex drinker. But after seeing a lot of new Aatrox i really like building more HP. But either works.

EDIT 1:
If he took ignite then ask for ganks and take advice from above^
If he didn't take ignite and he took TP you can easily trade early on with him after the blind is over and pressure him out of lane.

EDIT 2: Kys AD Teemo.

VS

Trundle

Hard

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Outscales you hard if you're not going tank stats for him. I would suggest tabi randuins and maybe a thornmail if really needed. Easy to deal with though and he doesn't offer much in a teamfight unless he's ahead.

VS

Udyr

Hard

VS

Vayne

Easy

They underestimate the new passive. Bait tumble and land Q = flash or kill. - for laning
In teamfights just like Ahri do not focus her because she will kite you to death. Make sure you're always hitting something in teamfights.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

Who can manage their blood better?

Dorans shield and make sure to trade when he uses his passive. You heal up faster early and have more kill potential especially if you take ignite. Also a bit similar to fizz but is easier to deal with.

VS

Volibear

Hard

VS

Warwick

Medium

His Ult is strong and he out heals you in most cases but it should be an easy lane.

VS

Wukong

Medium

Stack HP and he shouldn't be a problem but he is annoying and it a bit hard to deal with when he has an edge.

VS

Xin Zhao

Hard

If your team is behind and this guy is steamrolling just ff

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Take ignite or exhaust and cheese him level 3.

VS

Yorick

Medium

You're significantly weaker now in terms of sustaining and it will show vs Yorick. Easier to gank and kill than Darius. Keep healthy and survive lane because you'll outscale him hard.

EDIT 1: ALOT easier to fight after 7.5 lol 7.8 Aatrox will destroy this poor soul. Don't get cocky when he gets Trinity Force though because it does more damage than you would expect if you're going for more damage vs him.

EDIT 2: Patch 7.14 Yorick is much more annoying and takes a bit more patience to beat but should overall still be a winning match up. He's still deceptively very strong once he hits his Trinity Force power spike so care.
