Summoner Spells Back to Top

11.pngStandard for any jungler, you need it to secure objectives, get your jungle item, and clear in general
4.pngSome other junglers can take another summoner spell, but on Amumu, the importance of flash to position your ult after your Q/get a flash+Q is too much to give up

Masteries Back to Top

Sorcery vs Fury: Attack speed is useless on you.  You use your spells for everything

Double Edged Sword vs Feast vs Expose Weakness: I'd never run Feast: 20 hp every 30 seconds is only 40 health a minute, which is nearly negligible even in lane.  Expose weakness is alright, but I prefer double edged sword since it'll speed up your clears and Amumu does a TON of damage, even if building tank.

Vampirism vs Natural Talent: Honestly, both of these have minimal effect.

Bounty Hunter vs Oppressor: Amuyumu doesn't have the most CC, but Oppressor is more reliable in general, and once you get Rylai's it'll be almost always active.  You can generally stack Bounty Hunter if you play it right, but I wouldn't count on it: it's just too unreliable and as a tank you may end up giving a lot of the kills to your laners

Unyielding vs Recovery: Similarly to Feast, Recovery only restores 24 hp a MINUTE.  That's tiny, and although Unyielding isn't huge, it'll be more useful late game.

Tough Skin vs Explorer: Both are fine here.  Tough Skin will protect you since you're taking a lot of jungle monster hits, but if you want more mobility and roaming power, you probably won't miss Tough Skin too much.

Runic Armour vs Veteran's Scars: Veteran's Scars is designed to give you an early edge in laning, and while that's all very nice and good, you're not ganking until the 45 hp becomes negligible.  In addition, Runic Armour will increase your SotA healing and Talisman healing, keeping you healthier throughout the game.  Also great if you have a Soraka/Nami/Sona on the team.

Insight vs Perseverance: Both are ok, but more smites and flashes lets you clear faster and get more effective ganks done.

Swiftness vs Legendary Guardian: Both are fine.  Amumu can get kited if his Q is down, which Swiftness helps counter.  If you want to be a really solid tank in teamfights, Legendary Guardian can make it a little easier.

Strength of the Ages vs Grasp vs Bond of Stone: SotA is the BEST keystone for any tank jungler.  It gives you 300 hp which you will definitely feel throughout mid and late game, works well with Cinderhulk and Runic Blessings, and late game will give you a ton of HP sustain just by sitting near cannons while your team pushes or by doing a jungle camp or two.  Grasp is good if you're trading in lane a lot, but you're the jungler.  Bond of Stone is ok, but you WILL feel SotA working if you take it.

Why not Thunderlords?  Thunderlords is great on AP Amumu and is easy to proc with your Q E W combo, but you won't be scaling the damage much if you're going tanky, and SotA's tankiness and healing is worth much more.

Alright, here's where the Amumu mains go "No no you need to max E first, your W is bad compared to it".  While there is a lot of merit to the E max community, the W max just gives you SO much clear speed that you end up gaining a lot more time, money, and ganking power from it.  In addition, your W is great for killing both squishies and tank and is more reliable vs non AA based champions due to the solid base damage and 3% max hp damage every second.  Your E is only good for killing squishies, and unless they hit you back, it's going to be on a high cooldown, even if you max it.  The extra tankiness that E gives is very small, and since you're clearing so much more quickly with W, you'll be saving health compared to an E max anyway.  W max triples it's base damage, while E barely doubles it compared to rank 1.  In addition, even though the E cooldown goes down with level to possibly match W damage, it'll still eat up more mana since you'll be spamming it more, while your W does not increase in cost from rank 1 to 5.  Just try it: you won't go back to the E max.

Some links showing the power of W max:

https://www.reddit.com/r/summonerschool/comments/42k18j/the_actual_skill_order_of_amumu/ (math included)

http://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/skills-orders/amumu (every patch, I've noticed that W max Amumu is unpopular but retains the highest win rate of the skill orders)

Either way, you're going to max Q second because going from a 16 to an 8 second cooldown on your only gapcloser is HUGE, and then max your other damaging ability last.

Basic Ability Descriptions and Tips:

amumupassive.png You won't notice Amumu's passive most of the time, but it has a big effect of "hidden power".  It'll make clearing and dueling much easier, as long as you remember to autoattack them occasionally to keep it proc'd.

bandagetoss.png Your main gapcloser, it'll start with an obscenely high cooldown of 16 seconds and drop to <8 seconds (depending on CDR) as you put more points into it.  It has a LARGE range, but it is a very narrow skillshot, which can make it a little tricky to land.  However, I still consider it much easier than a rocketgrab.pngorthreshQ.pngorleonazenithblade.pngdue to it's speed and range.  It also offers a fair amount of burst damage: 280+70%AP at max rank, which will smash a squishy's health down hard.  You can also use it to peel with the 1 second stun attached to it, or to escape by Q'ing a jungle camp or baron/dragon over a wall and jumping to the camp.  BE AWARE THAT THIS SKILL HAS A VERY HIGH MANA COST.

auraofdespair.png Your main damaging ability, and personally I think this is the reason that Amumu is considered so overpowered: As a tank, your job is usually not to do damage, but this W with it's 24+3% max hp per second WILL guarantee that you are a damage threat, even if you build full tank.  There are many games as Amumu where I'll do the most damage overall and in teamfights, and it's definitely because of the W.

tantrum.png If you max W, this will provide a small amount of burst and tankiness to follow up with your Q, but it's nothing impressive.  If you max E, it'll make a LITTLE tanky, but will provide a moderate amount of burst in an area around you.  Remember fights against Auto-attacked based champs are more likely to go in your favor due to their AAs being reduced by your E passive and also lowering the cooldown of your own damage.

curseofthesadmummy.png The main reason people always want an Amumu on their team, and the reason you will almost always win late game teamfights.  This incredibly high cooldown skill can lock down entire teams with a Q R combo, and sets up teams incredibly well.  Some things to know: your ult is NOT a stun: people are immobilized, but it won't break channels like deathlotus.png   missfortunebullettime.pngor infiniteduress.png.  You'll have you use your bandagetoss.png for that.  BE AWARE THAT THIS SKILL HAS A VERY HIGH MANA COST.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Basic starting set for Amumu, there's really no reason to deviate from this.

Core Items

This is your basic 3 item set, and will give you damage, a ton more sticking power, and a large amount of tankiness.
This item set will give you more early game damage, mana, and mobility, but will heavily lower your tankiness compared to the first set.

Situational Items

Reccomended Bruiser Amumu 6 item build, you'll hit 30% CDR, have around 4500 HP, and do a ton of damage with the Rylai's Liandry's Combo.
40% CDR Full Tank Amumu: you'll get a lot of ults off with this, and be very hard to kill, but your burst will be minimal.
Grenade Amumu: you'll Q R in, ult, then hopefully blow everything up before you die due to your lack of tankiness.
1402.pngvs1401.png: Both are good, sporting a nearly identical win rate for players that buy each item.  Personally I find that I'm too squishy even with Runic + Sunfire, and like how Cinderhulk synergizes with the Rylais and Liandries to give a ton of health while still having great damage.  However, the choice is up to player preference: Runic's movement speed and mana refund are also quite nice to have.

VS

Akali

Easy

She won't have enough damage to burst you, but you definitely do enough damage to kill her.  Even if she akalismokebomb.png, your W and E can cover most of the area, still hurting her consistently.

VS

Blitzcrank

Easy

PLEASE PULL ME.  You are Blitzcrank's worst nightmare.  If he accidentally lands his rocketgrab.png on you, consider it a free teamfight won.

VS

Brand

Hard

One of the bigger threats to you due to your lack of early MR and his % max hp damage, he'll hit hard if you ignore him.  Luckily, his self-peel is negligible, and if you manage to jump on him, he should die fairly quickly.

VS

Darius

Hard

Darius is one of those champs that, if you max E, you WILL get dunked.  His dariuscleave.png healing and dariusaxegrabcone.png make it extremely hard to get away from him, and his tankiness makes him impossible to burst.  You have a chance to 1v1 him if you get enough armour, hp, and a rylais+liandries AND W MAX, but otherwise, just try to peel him off of your carries and let them wear him down.

VS

Diana

Easy

She's made to kill squishies, you're made to kill everyone.  She can't kill you, you have more utility, and you can 1v1 her fairly easy if she goes an assassin build.  In addition, her early pressure is laughably until she gets dianaR.png , and by then, you have your curseofthesadmummy.png , so you'll be 100x more useful.  If you're really struggling vs her or if she somehow gets really fed, just grab a 3065.png or 3102.png and you'll be A-OK.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

You two are actually fairly similar, stacking a ton of health and doing a ton of % hp damage with auraofdespair.png and infectedcleavermissilecast.png .  Ask your team to build 3165.png or 3123.png , and grab a rylai's so he can't run away with his ult while you wear him down with your auraofdespair.png.

VS

Ekko

Easy

You will outdamage Tank Ekko easily, as his stacking health makes your auraofdespair.png do more, while his ekkoW.png passive really doesn't affect you.  His other abilities will be laughably weak since Riot keeps nerfing their base values.  Be more worried about him hitting your carries than you, but in general Ekko is pretty easy to deal with.

VS

Elise

Hard

Elise is a natural tank killer, and she'll take you down with ease early one with her powerful burst and % hp abilities.  However, if you manage to survive past level 6 (especially in low elo, where few people can pull off Elise well), you'll outscale her extremely hard and should try to just teamfight your way through her.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Medium

Make sure to use your bandagetoss.png to break his drain.png or crowstorm.png.  He does a lot of damage, and his fiddlesticksdarkwind.png and terrify.png are very annoying as targeted CC that will prevent you from getting your ult off.  Just try to weather the storm so you can get your curseofthesadmummy.png off.

VS

Fiora

Hard

She's a hard one to deal with, with her fiorariposte.pngeasily blocking the CC from your bandagetoss.png, and her healing/% max hp true damage being incredibly hard to duel with.  You'll just want to group up and hope you can run her over.  She's hard to gank, hard to 1v1, and hard to get away from.

VS

Fizz

Medium

Neither of you will normally be able to kill the other, and it'll be one of the more frustrating matchups to play for Amumu (having been on both sides of it).  Make sure not to blow your bandagetoss.png or even worse, your curseofthesadmummy.png when he has his fizzjump.png, since a good Fizz will see it and completely negate your 150 second cooldown ult :/

VS

Illaoi

Hard

One of the few champs that can rival you in teamfighting, try to avoid ganking her if she's ahead: she'll turn it around with the more people that are there, heal and incredibly amount, and her illaoiR.png can give her a free triple or quadra.  She's slow and unwieldy though, so apply lots of pressure elsewhere.

VS

Jax

Easy

His jaxcounterstrike.png is pretty useless against you, since your tears burn him without much need to autoattack.  He will do a lot of damage and try to splitpush, but you should be able to just group and 5 and walk down a lane and smash him apart with brute force.

VS

Kalista

Medium

Her passive makes her a slippery character, and she is one of two characters that I'd recommend using your curseofthesadmummy.png before your bandagetoss.png, because it's simply too challenging to land a skillshot on her.  Once you manage to get your bandagetoss.png off though, your damage should be enough to take her down.  Get a 3110.png and 3143.png if you're really having trouble with her.

VS

Kayle

Easy

Her kayleR.png can be annoying, along with her kiting power, but if you manage to get a bandagetoss.png curseofthesadmummy.png on her, you can usually burst her before the CC wears off and she can ult.  She's quite strong, but the changes to rageblade and runaan's left her in an iffy place.

VS

Kha'Zix

Easy

If he doesn't kill you early in an invade, you've won.  I've seen so many Khazix's get fed (I'm talking 12/0) early, but as soon as I hit 6, the entire game turns around.  Khazix can get incredibly fed, but that doesn't mean much when he doesn't do anything when you guys group.

VS

Kindred

Medium

Kindred is great at kiting, but most players can't use her too well, and her kindredR.png can backfire super easily.  Her repeated nerfs also have softened her formerly brutal early game, and thus getting to level 6 against a Kindred is no longer as difficult as it used to be.

VS

Lee Sin

Easy

Most Lee Sin players are really, really bad at him, and often times outplay themselves more than you outplay them (and thus why he has such a low win rate).  A good Lee will make your life hell, but there are so few of them you don't have to worry most of the time.

VS

Malphite

Easy

You both have great teamfighting ults with your curseofthesadmummy.png and his ufslash.png, but you do a ton of magic damage to him with your auraofdespair.png, while he struggles to do anything vs tanks.  In addition, your ult is a lot bigger,/longer duration your Q is better than his, and you can actually be picked vs any comp, unlike him.

VS

Maokai

Easy

You both have % hp damage, but your auraofdespair.png is way more consistent than his maokaiunstablegrowth.png.  Maokai just really doesn't have much damage, and you will be able to rip through his team, even with his maokaidrain3.png on.  Maokai's not a bad champ, but his kit just isn't great at dealing with yours.  The best he can do is try to interrupt your bandagetoss.png with his maokaitrunkline.png.

VS

Master Yi

Medium

AYYY IT'S MY OTHER MAIN.

3a17b0a2f4e94af3953f0a1b1fdea4e8.png

This is one of the few matchups where you might want to save your curseofthesadmummy.png, because if you don't have it, this guy will likely rampage through your whole team.  It's worth it to blow everything you have on Yi, because the alternative is too horrible to consider.  He has enough damage to actually smack through your auraofdespair.png and tantrum.png power, and if he gets some lifesteal, your DPS will be fairly negligible.  It's burst and CC him or die.

VS

Nasus

Easy

You are quite possibly one of the best people to take on a late game Nasus.

Your auraofdespair.png makes it so that you do incredible damage to a full damage Nasus, especially with his godofdeath.png giving him more health.  Your tank build makes it so that you can survive multiple siphoningstrikenew.png, and once you get Rylais, you can stick to him even if he wither.png you.  You might not always be able to 1v1 him, but you can gank him and peel him while buying whatever time your team needs to take him down late game.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

He doesn't do damage, and you do.  You'll take him down no problem, have comparable teamfight CC with rylais and curseofthesadmummy.png, and be far too tanky for him to handle.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

If you survive to 6, you'll outscale her super hard.  Nidalee has no CC, not great teamfights, lack of tankiness, and low DPS/assassination potential outside of the early game.  The only edge she has you in is early pressure, but there are SO many bad Nidalees, like Lee Sins, that this shouldn't be too much of a problem until you hit a very high level of play.

VS

Olaf

Medium

His olafragnarok.png is annoying, and you definitely should not be trying to fight him head on or blow CC when it's up, but he's not picked often nor played super well in the late game (he's one of those people that does little damage if built tank, and blows up if built damage), so you don't have to worry about Olaf most of the time.

VS

Pantheon

Easy

He can't kill you if you have 3047.png and 3110.png, but you can definitely kill him with your auraofdespair.png and bandagetoss.png.  Strong early, useless late game.

VS

Rammus

Easy

Rammus wants to stack armor and hp, like malphite, but your auraofdespair.png will force him to get MR or get burned to death, especially if you get Liandry's + Rylai's.  He also doesn't have great teamfighting, though his ganks are much stronger than yours.

VS

Rengar

Medium

If he invades you, you're in big trouble.  Rengar can snowball hard, and you're very weak early.  However, if he doesn't get anything done early, you'll be infinite more useful in teamfights with your CC and damage.

VS

Sejuani

Easy

You're basically a better version of Sejuani: you do more damage with your auraofdespair.png than her sejuaninorthernwinds.png, your curseofthesadmummy.png is harder to mess up than her sejuaniglacialprisonstart.png, and your burst higher with your tantrum.png and bandagetoss.png compared to her sejuaniwintersclaw.png and sejuaniarcticassault.png.  She is, however, more mobile with her sejuaniarcticassault.png, but that's really the only edge Sejuani has over Amumu.  You'll wreck her with your % hp damage.

VS

Shaco

Hard

He can make your life utter hell, does tons of damage, is super hard to catch or land anything on, and makes it so he'll be level 8 by the time you're 6.  Honestly, if it's a good Shaco, just bend over and pray you can make it to late game where his utility will be less than yours.

VS

Shen

Easy

Although both of you have % hp damage, his really isn't enough to pose a threat to you.  In addition, while his shenstandunited.png is very powerful for pressure and map control, he doesn't actually do much in actual combat, with his shenfeint.png being pretty much useless vs you.

VS

Tahm Kench

Easy

It's kind of funny, but your auraofdespair.png will still damage him and his team even if he tahmkenchW.png.  I never saw Tahm Kench as a problem: his damage is incredibly single target, his CC is delayed, and his ult is pretty garbage in teamfights.  The only redeeming factor he has is he can tahmkenchW.png a carry when they're ulted, but that's pretty much the only thing you have to worry about.

VS

Veigar

Medium

Veigar does insane damage, and his veigareventhorizon.png will interrupt your Q (ugh! How frustrating).  However, his veigareventhorizon.png is on a very long cooldown, and you can usually burst him if you manage to actually land your bandagetoss.png on him.

VS

Xin Zhao

Medium

Xin is one of those people that can 1v1 pretty much everyone, and you're no exception: he doesn't go tanky enough for you to rip through, his early dueling is incredibly powerful, and his healing makes it hard to get much done.

However, Xin also suffers from all-in syndrome, where once he gets in, he can't go out. CC him, and your team should be able to blow him up.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Yasuo is hilarious to play against: he always overpushes, he has no escapes, he's squishy, and he is all auto attack based.  Once you get 3047.png, he can't kill you, and you'll rip him to pieces.  Make sure he uses his yasuoW.png before you throw a bandagetoss.png out though, or you'll end up looking silly and he'll walk away from you.

VS

Zyra

Medium

Zyra has monstrous poke, CC, and teamfighting with her zyraR.png.  You should try to focus her whenever possible, since she's extremely squishy and has no escapes once yo uget in range.  However, her zyraE.png can interrupt your bandagetoss.png, but if you land it, the stun should be enough to get you up and close.

How do I PLAY Amumu? (Jungle) Back to Top

EARLY GAME

Early game, the first thing you need to do is look at your matchup: are you against someone likely to be aggressive and invade you early (64.png76.png77.png60.png35.png)?  If so, you need to adjust your clear: starting a buff instead of a camp, or doing the no-buff clear (the 4 jungle camps that aren't buffs, back, then all the camps).  Otherwise, you can start bot side, do a camp and 2 buffs, scuttle to get some hp back, then look around for a chance to gank.  If you see the enemy jungler ganking top or bot and you're on the other side of the map, try to take his farm before he can arrive there again.  If you can get a gank off, go for it, then keep clearing/buying as needed until you hit level 6, your first big powerspike.

Mid Game

Mid game is where Amumu starts becoming strong: you have lots of damage with a few points in your W, and your first priority whenever you have ult is to gank with it: you need to be constantly looking at your minimap and checking who's pushed/where their jungler is/who doesn't have summoners or escapes.  It's especially good if you can get plays off on Bot lane, since your ult is incredibly strong for ganking bot, and it's easy to take Dragon after a good bot lane play.

Late Game

If you went a tanky build (something like Cinderhulk, Rylais, Visage, Frozen Hearth, Tabi, Liandrys), you're a raid boss now.  You're extremely tanky, you deal tons of damage, and you have a hard engage for your team whenever you land a Q.  As long as your team is grouped, you should be able to win 95% of teamfights as Amumu, and steamroll your way through the team death match that's far too common in solo queue.  Remember not to go in unless your team is with you though, or you're going to have a lot of trouble dead and your ult on cooldown.  Try to force objectives as much as possible, and realize it's possible to dive if you guys are ahead or outnumber them.

How to gank as Amumu

If your ult is down/you're not 6 yet, here's what you do.  Walk behind them, and try to get some AAs + W + Es on the person (these add up, especially early game), hopefully applying red buff to them.  When they use their flash or escape abilities, then Q them, and E again to hopefully finish them off.

If you have your ult, ult as soon as they're in range for it.  Most people expect you not to blow it so early, so they won't be able to escape it, vs later when they're preparing their flash/escape for when you Q or ult.  Then do the same thing as before: hit them, and Q when they try to get away.

Too many new Amumu's throw their Q as soon as they walk into lane, miss, then walk away, getting absolutely nothing done.  There's no need to use your Q immediately: every skill you use should have some purpose behind it.

How do I PLAY Amumu? (Top/Support) Back to Top

This section's going to be fairly short, since I don't have too much experience in either.

Top lane:  Start corrupting potion, max your E and farm with it/harass when possible.  When your jungler ganks, try to walk up and get a Q on them, then ult.  If you're not sure you can land your Q and they're in ult range, ult and then Q.  Build sunfire and frozen heart in an AD matchup.  If in an AP matchup, go 1 or 2 doran's for mana, then get Spirit Visage and/or Abyssal.  Look for teleport plays; Amumu has some of the strongest TP ganks with his Q R combo.

Support: Max your Q, and try to avoid trading pre-6 due to your lack of CC and high mana costs.  Go full tank (Relic Shield line), and hit 40% CDR so your team has your ult up whenever they need it.  You're simply an ult-bot most of the time, though late game you can hit raid boss status still.

Honestly, neither of them are fabulous, but if Amumu really appeals to you, they're both workable.

Discussion: AP vs Tank Amumu Back to Top

Pros of AP Amumu:

Amumu has very high AP ratios on all of his abilities
Your Q R E combo has almost no counterplay if you can manage to consistently land it
If you get ahead, your R + E can blow up entire teams

Cons of AP Amumu:

Your damage almost completely relies on landing Q, which, at the end of the day, is not nearly as reliable as other assassins
Your ult is on a high cooldown, and without it, your burst is average
You will die instantly if you do not kill everyone first, as you have no escapes and negligible built in tankiness

What do I think overall?

It's really fun if you can pull it off, but there are much more reliable assassins out there if you want to blow up some stuff.  Do it in normals, but it's not great in ranked.

Why is Amumu so OP in low elo? Back to Top

This is a question that I pondered at the start: why is Amumu such a raid boss and have such a high winrate when another tank (say, Sejuani) offer the CC and have better synergy with tank items than you do?  (It struck me as weird that someone with no abilities scaling with tank items unlike Sejuani/Nautilus/Sion/Skarner built tank).  There are really two reasons Amumu is so powerful:

1.He does insane damage for a tank

After you play Amumu a few times, you'll see how much damage his abilities have.  His Q, E, and ult have incredibly high base damages, while your W burns for a reliable, high amount.  This makes him unique among tanks in that he's a tank that directly counters other tanks while also being far too tanky for most squishies to kill.  His high base damages let him kill squishies, while his W damage makes it so no tank can duel with him.  That's why I think cinderhulk is so good on him: he doesn't need to build echoes to do damage, he just needs health so he can survive long enough for his W DPS to hit people.  There are lots of games where the full tank Amumu ends up doing the MOST damage of any of his teammates since he can survive and burn everyone down.

2. He thrives on solo queue team death match

If any of you are wondering, team death match is when both teams just group up and smashes into each other.  The way to counter Amumu is teamwork: spreading out so his ult doesn't hit everyone, rotating around to take advantage of his lack of mobility, holding proper sieges where he'll struggle to waveclear from lack of range.  However, without this coordination, Amumu's nearly guaranteed teamfighting makes him a monster to deal with.  Teams that try to 5v5 will get steamrolled, teams that don't work together to shut him down pre 6 will find themselves outscaled, and teams that have splitpushes at bad times will get dove and lose their inhibitiors.  Amumu heavily punishes teams that do not work together.

Who am I? Back to Top

Hi!  I'm Littie Prince, a Gold Jungle Main that plays mostly Master Yi, Amumu, Wukong, Volibear, and Maokai.  I started in Bronze 4 and learned about the game until I managed to climb to Gold today, and enjoy passing what I've learned to my fellow low elo people :)

Amumu has been by far my most successful champion, and I'm looking to hit Platinum with him if possible.
